REVIEW - ROBBING VIKES ' We are "PIRATES" ' (2014)

Robbing Vikes - 'We are "PIRATES" ' Minatomachi Records MMR-003
Release date: June 11th, 2014
Running time:16:00, 5 tracks

Japan has a vibrant Celtic/folk punk scene. Unfortunately, most of the bands break-up or, even if they are still alive, we don’t hear of them again. The only exception would be The Cherry Coke$, which are really a prolific band. We must feel happy now, since there is a new gem hailing from Japan: Robbing Vikes. These guys have just released a fecking brilliant EP whose sound is based on the mandolin, perfectly backed by the electric instruments and, sometimes, by the tin whistle. Although there are some Dropkick Murphys elements on some of their songs, Robbing Vikes are not the usual wannabe band. In fact, they are neither influenced by DKM, nor by Flogging Molly. And, to tell you the truth, this is a big compliment to them.

The Japanese pirates have recorded 5 self-penned top-notch songs.  On “Battle Field”, the opening track, the mandolin, tin whistle, guitar and gang vocals are really amazing. But the next song is even better, the fantastic “Captain Frogger”, where the guys give Flatfoot 56 a run for their money. I love the mandolin sound, similar to the songs that Asturian band The Cilvrnigans have released so far. Robbing Vikes don’t slow down in track no. 3, “Let’s Get Drunk”, which is a festive song that Paddy and The Rats fans will enjoy. The tin whistle is heard again on “Oretachi no utopia”. Finally, Robbing Vikes show us
on “Umi! Sake! Onna! Kurau!!! that they can become a sort of Japanese Bastards on Parade (without pipes, obviously) .

Robbing Vikes 'We are “PIRATES” ' EP is a great discovery. Try to grab a copy, since this will make the Top5 EPs of the year.

Tracklist:

1 - Battle Field
2 - Captain Frogger
3 - Let's Get Drunk
4 - Oretachi no utopia

VIDEO - 16 TONS WITH ALLY "Safari"

This is the official video for the song "Safari" by 16 Tons with Ally.

REVIEW - 16 TONS WITH ALLY "Safari" (2014)

16 Tons with Ally "Safari" Chaos & Anarchy CAAC-1024
Release date: 5 February 2014
Running time: 29:25, 7 tracks

Last month our colleagues from the e-zine Idioteq posted an interesting interview with Gord Taylor . Someone on Facebook  pointed out the following words from that interview: “So my advice for new bands who wanna play bagpipes in their band…don’t worry about trying to be ‘Celtic Punk Rock’. Just try to be Fucking Good!

Great minds think alike! 16 Tons with Ally released their album before that interview, but they followed the very same  approach. Tadashi Inoue (vocals, acordion, guitar),  Sei Komiyama (guitar, banjo), Go Oue (bass), Takashi Oshida (drums) and Ally (great Highland bagpipes, tin  whistle) could have tried to deliver  a fast-paced Irish infused folk punk album à la Cherry Coke$. However, they wanted to show all the different sounds  that the accordion, the banjo and the pipes are able to offer.

Safari” is an album for for open-minded music lovers, but the Celtic punk diehard fan will also find some interesting stuff. For instance, numbers such as “Piper’s Tongue”, a musical voyage from Galicia to Scotland, and “Shokuminchi no uta”, an infectious song featuring tin whistle instead of bagpipes that will make you grab a beer and sing-a-long even if you don’t speak Japanese. The opening number, “Safari”, is not too distant from bagpipes rock. However, “Rentan kikan-sha” goes to a different place, techno-pipes  in the Hamish McDoodle & The Kicking Keltic Kaos Krew vein. Neverthless, IMHO, the true gem on the mini-album is the second song, “Kujaku cho”, an accordion led Japanese pop number with a Serge Gainsbourg twist.

16 Tons with Ally "Safari" is not intended for the fans who love the Japanese rustic/Poguesish  scene, but it’s an awesome collection of songs for those who are looking for surprises and forget about the established rules of the genre.

Track listing:

01 - Safari
02 - Kujaku cho (Peacock Butterfly)
03 - Piper's Tongue
04 - Shokuminchi no uta (Song of the Colonial)
05 - Aguriasu
06 - Rentan kikan-sha - Dub Version GORIKI Mix (Briquettes Locomotive)

REVIEW - VA "May the Folk Be With You Vol. I", Uncleowen Music UNCL045

VA -May the Folk Be With You Vol. I, Uncleowen Music UNCL045
Release date: 2011
Running time: 33:32, 10 tracks

Samplers are the easiest way to show what is going on in the Celtic rock scene. “Maybe the Folk Be With You Vol. 1”, the last sampler release by the Japanese label Uncleowen presents 5 bands, four Celtic punk and Celtic rock bands (MoDERN B Beard, Ally Band, Pinch of Snuff and Royal Shamrock) and one ska band (The Autocratics).

MoDERN B Beard were recently reviewed here, so I guess that you will be familiar with them. The two tracks that are featured are tracks no 2 and track no. 11 taken from their debut album “1st Log Book”. I would have chosen other tracks but these two songs are enough to know that these guys are leading the Japanese Celtic punk scene.

The next band is called Ally Band. Band members are Ally (Great Highland pipes), NKB (guitar) and Osamu. I like their approach and I have enjoyed both tracks, but I prefer the second one, "Hellbound Train". I have the impression that Ally doesn’t feel so comfortable on the first one, “Mason’s Apron”. Anyway, a very interesting band.

The third band is Pinch of Snuff and they have already released a 5 track EP (three set of tunes and two Irish songs). The band consists of Tiger (vocals and guitar, he’s MoDERN B Beard’s accordionist), Yuka (fiddle), Mattsn (tin whistle), Marinanne (bodhrán), Shark (double bass) and Ichi (5 string banjo). A different sound, but quite enjoyable. "Pinsuna Set" is an excellent selection of tunes: Tam Lin / The Cooley’s / The Mouth of Tobique.

The Autocratics are a ska band. Not a Celtic ska band, but a 2 Tone ska band. If you like The Specials, The Selecter or Bad Manners, check The Autocratics.

The last band is Royal Shamrock. They are the best known band in the sampler, as they have released a couple of albums and an EP. Besides, their music have been featured in several samplers. The two tracks come from their second album and I feel that they are moving away from the Celtic influence. By the way, the guy that plays the electric guitar is Tiger. Yes, the same guy that is a member of MoDERN B Beard and Pinch of Snuff and who was a member of The Croagh Patrick. And the drummer is a guy known as Sexy, who was also a member of The Croagh Patrick.

UncleOwen is doing a fine job releasing and distributing European, North American and Australian Celtic punk bands in the Japanese market. But, at the same time, the label is giving a boost to their local scene. Thanks, Sota.

Tracklist:

1. MoDERN B Beard - Viking Aubade 3:17
2. MoDERN B Beard - The Leaving Of Liverpool 3:11
3. ALLY BAND - Mason's Apron 2:47
4. ALLY BAND - The Hellbound Train 3:46
5. PINCH OF SNUFF - Star Of The County Down 2:00
6. PINCH OF SNUFF - Pinsuna Set 4:22
7. THE AUTOCRATICS - Suited & Booted'79 4:02

REVIEW - MoDERN B BEARD "1st Log Book" Uncleowen Music UNCL047

MoDERN B Beard "1st Log Book" UNCL047
Release date: June 2011
Running Time: 40:08, 13 tracks

The Japanese scene has offered a bunch of great bands: The Cherry Cokes, Junior, The Croagh Patrick, Mt. Paiots, Royal Shamrock … and it keeps on growing. MoDERN B Beard is its latest sensation.

B$ala Teach (vocals, mandolin), Worry (acoustic guitar), Marty (tin whistle), Lucky Larva (bass), daCoit D ddnpa (drums & bodhrán) and Tiger Maclover (accordion) have recorded a “classic” Celtic punk album, that is, both instrumentation and sound are clearly influenced by The Pogues, Greenland Whalefishers or The Tossers.

1st Log Book” is a solid collection of songs blending the energy of the early Pogues and the Japanese approach to Celtic punk (listen to tracks no. 2, 6 and 7) . There is no electric guitar and therefore instruments such as the tin whistle and accordion play a major role. Particularly, I find Marty’s tin whistle very interesting.

The guys cover “Sally MacLennane” and a couple of traditional songs (“The Foggy Dew” and “The Leaving of Liverpool”). But the real strength of the band is their self-penned songs.

Track no. 3 is a top-notch cow punk number that seems an outtake from “Rum, Sodomy and the Lash”.

The tin whistle in track no. 5 recalls Greenland Whalefishers, but the song is clearly a Japanese Celtic punk number.

Track no. 9 shines too: an “I Fought the Law” style song that features “Maidrín Rua” at the end.

I like the accordion in track no.10, a song that recalls Paddy and The Rats via The Cherry Cokes.

Track 12 is a Whisky Priests meet The Tossers song.

And the last song, “Message in a Rum Bottle”, is simply an awesome ballad.

MoDERN B Beard are not as raucous as The Cherry Cokes. However, their members know all the tricks to make their music appealing. In fact, Tiger Mclover was The Croagh Patrick guitarist and is also a member of The Royal Shamrock. MoDERN B Beard, sake soaked Celtic punk or Suntory (whisky) soaked Celtic punk? Who knows, maybe both of them.
