2018-03-04 ALBUM REVIEW - KILT THE MESSENGER "Hellfire & Rescue" (2018)
By Celtic Folk Punk

In 5 Reviews, 8 New Albums, Bagpipes Rock, Celtic Punkabilly, Celtic Rock, Kilt the Messenger, Shamrockabilly, USA
Kilt the Messenger "Hellfire & Rescue"
Release date: January 26, 2018
Running time: 43:27, 12 tracks
Kilt the Messenger is Bob Youhas (vocals, guitar, bagpipes, banjo, accordion), Annie Astley Padnuk (vocals, bagpipes, viola), Jim Turner (keyboards, trumpet), David Nelson (bass, vocals) and Haley Youhas (drums). They have been recording their second album “Hellfire & Rescue” during the last three years and regularly videos for some of the songs have been posted on YouTube. As Bob says, Kilt the Messenger are not easy to pigeonhole; they aren’t the usual bagpipes rock or bagpipes punk band. So, they’ve tagged their music as Celtic Punkabilly. 11 songs have made the album. There are several rockabilly numbers, some folk-rock tracks and, above all, some poignant songs featuring bagpipes.
The highlights are “I will Not Say Goodbye”, “Joseph”, “The Ballad of Vincent McCarthy” and “Dungeons of Hell”. The first three tracks are true gems. “I will not Say Goodbye” was accepted and made it all the way to the nominating process for the 2017 Grammy Awards. Bob and Annie share vocal duties and the vocal harmonies are spot on. The structure of the song is flawless. Backing accordion, viola parts and a kick-ass bagpipes tune. “Joseph” is a brilliant number too. Incredibly well-written song, once again Bob and Annie share vocal duties. Guitar, viola and accordion are played at the beginning of the song, but later banjo takes the lead and Jim shines on trumpet. “The Ballad of Vincent McCarthy” is a special song for Bob, who is a fireman. This song is “the story of an 87 year old retired New York City fireman who joined us for dinner at the fire station every B-shift for 6 years”. Bob played the pipes at Vince’s funeral. This number is bagpipes rock at its best. Both Annie and Bob play the pipes and they’re joined by some pipe band members on drums at the end of the song, Jim Adams, Mike Naughton and Buddy Rein. “Dungeons of Hell” is a fictional tale of a battle. Keyboards and Annie back Bob at the beginning and then the electric guitar, the pipes and the rhythm section deliver a kick-ass bagpipes punk number.
“All of these Rivers” is a punk song featuring viola that sometimes reminds me of Mick Jones’ songs with The Clash. “Come Low Come High” has a guitar intro à la early Billy Bragg but soon evolves into an interesting rock song with an electric guitar part towards the end.
“They tell me that Was You” is a track about "the decline of a Super power nation over the last 50 years". The song gets a guitar based R’n’R treatment. The next cut is titled “Coming to a Theater near You”. It’s a high-octane rockabilly number that was awarded Alternative Rock song of the month by the Akademia Music Awards in Los Angeles. “No Coming Back for You/Big Brother” and “Nobody Came” are more rockabilly infused songs. Dennis Bram (sax) and Jim Correa (trombone) guest on “Nobody Came”. Finally, “Speeding Car” is an appealing folk rock cut with some Mark Knopfler sounding electric guitar.
Celtic punk can be sometimes an endogamic scene. However, some bands are trying to stretch the boundaries of the genre. Kilt the Messenger would be one of those bands. No pub standard will be found on this record, but a bunch of honest self-penned songs.

2017-12-16 EP REVIEW - RAWLINS CROSS "Rock Steady" (2017)
By Celtic Folk Punk
On 8:52 PM
In 5 Reviews, 8 New Albums, Bagpipes Rock, Canada, Celtic Rock, Rawlins Cross
Rawlins Cross "Rock Steady" GroundSwell Music
Release date: December 1, 2017
Running time: 22:16, 6 tracks
Rawlins Cross is the name for a convergence of streets in St. John’s, Newfoundland. But Rawlins Cross is also the name for the main Celtic rock band from Atlantic Canada. The band released their debut album “A Turn of the Wheel” in 1989, a blend of traditional tunes and songs written by brothers Dave (guitar, vocals) and Geoff Panting (keyboards, vocals). Apart from them, piper and tin whistler Ian McKinnnon from Halifax, Nova Scotia, was on that first line-up. Their second album, “Crossing the Border”, was released in 1992.
Their classic line-up was established in 1993 with the release of “Reel’n’Roll”: Dave Panting (guitar, mandolin, backing vocals), Geoff Panting (accordion, keyboards, backing vocals), Ian McKinnon (pipes, tin whistle), Brian Bourne (bass, chapman stick, backing vocals, from Halifax, Nova Scotia), Howie Southwood (drums, from Elora, Ontario) and Joey Kitson (lead vocals, from Prince Edward Island). Then, they released “Living River” in 1996, “Celtic Instrumentals” in 1997 ("a composite of instrumentals from previous albums and new tunes recorded especially for this project") and “Make it on Time” in 1998. All the albums were released by Ground Swell Records in Canada and “Living River” and “Make it on Time” were licensed to Magnetic Music in Germany.
Rawlins Cross went on hiatus around 2001 and they came back in 2008 with a best of called “Anthology” , which was followed by a new album titled “Heart-Head-Hands” in 2010. “Rock Steady” is their new 6 track EP after a second hiatus.
“Rock Steady” is the first cut on the disc. This kick-ass song written by Dave is the proof that Rawlins Cross are alive and kicking. “Rock Steady” showcases catchy chorus (“Is everybody ready? Rock Steady!”), Joey’s powerful vocals, Geoff’s accordion, Ian’s pipes and Howie and Brian on the rhythm section. However, the standout track on the album is “Hold You Tonight”. This lively number is a true gem, probably one of the best Celtic rock songs of 2017. Ian plays tin whistle and guest Julien Kitson (Joey’s song) plays tenor banjo. Curiously, this is the first song written for the band by Joey Kitson.
“Can’t Get You outta my Mind” was written by Brian. The sound is maybe different, I daresay that it has a The Doors spin, and it’s about “modern mass miscommunications by many modes”. Joey’s vocals are spotless.
Rawlins Cross move to their slower side on “Long Have we travelled”, “That Last Long Mile” and “Waltzing the Time Away”. The whistle is played on the first half of “Long Have We Travelled” but later the pipes arrive together with the electric guitar. This song was written by John Landry, Ian McKinnon and Geoff Panting. “That Last Long Mile” has great keyboards and tin whistle arrangements, and perfect drums by Howie. It was written by Geoff Painting, while “Waltzing the Time Away” was written by his brother Dave. Great song to finish up the EP.
“Rock Steady” is an interesting CD that old and new fans will appreciate. I miss one or two set of tunes, since I feel that they would have improved the EP balance. Anyway, I’m really happy that Rawlins Cross are back.
Track listing:
1 - Rock Steady 3:11
2 - Hold You Tonight 2:51

2017-04-04 ALBUM REVIEW - BENJAMING'S CLAN "Sedm statečných" (2017)
By Celtic Folk Punk
On 6:00 PM
In 5 Reviews, 8 New Albums, Bagpipes Rock, Benjaming's Clan, Celtic Rock, Czech Republic
Benjaming's Clan "Sedm statečných"
Release date: January 28, 2017
Running time: 53:30, 14 tracks
"Sedm statečných" is the second album released by Czech band Benjaming’s Clan. The bagpipes punk family band Benjaming Band evolved into a Celtic rock band when Polish musician Jacek joined them. A new approach involved a new name. Another Polish musician came on board, fiddler Gřešek. Later, Gřešek left the band and they hired the services of female fiddler Barča. Gřešek came back and currently Benjaming’s Clan are a 7 piece band. In fact, the title of their brand new album “Sedm statečných” means “The Magnificent Seven”.
It would be simple to say that the old bagpipes punk band evolved into a bagpipes rock band. But this would not be 100% right. The bagpipes rock side of the band is showcased on the amazing song “Baby Boxy”, the interesting tribal number “Šel do baru”, “Všude kde jsi” with a Mudmen touch, the bluesy “Zeleznej Dedek”, “Pohádková” or the opening track “Andel strážný”. But there are quite a few Celtic rock numbers were no pipes are played. Yes, accordion, percussion or backing banjo play a big role on Benjaming’s Clan new album.
“Stoletá láska” has all the above mentioned elements and it’s one of the album highlights. “Vekslák” is a catchy number, thanks to its na-na-na vocals, an addictive accordion and fiddle theme, and some yee-has. I love the bluegrass-y “Obézní muz”, and “Hudebníkova Zpoved’” ans “Slepecký pes” are enjoyable songs too.
The only cover in the album is the closing number “Amazing Grace”. It gets an ethereal treatment with guest Maruska on female vocals. Most of the lyrics on the album have been written by their friend Jiri lokouta, but “Zeleznej Dedek” has been written by poet Petr Havránek.
"Sedm statečných" is more ambitious musically than their previous album and Benjaming's Clan have not failed, quite the contrary. In other words, "Sedm statečných" is the Benjaming’s Clan’s most mature effort to date.

2017-03-15 ALBUM REVIEW - CELKILT "Stand" (2017)
By Celtic Folk Punk
On 10:03 PM
In 5 Reviews, 8 New Albums, Bagpipes Rock, Celkilt, Celtic Punk, Celtic Rock, France
Celkilt "Stand"
Release date: March 11, 2017
Running time: 47:12, 13 tracks
If you have a look to my review of Celkilt “On the Table” (HERE) these were my last words: "Nevertheless, I’d appreciate very much if the next time they could jump from the 9 track/30 minute CD format to the 12 track/40 minute CD format."
The five piece band from Roanne delivered 2 EPs and 2 mini-albums between 2011 and 2014. In 2015 they issued a Christmas song mini-album (10 songs, running time: 25 minutes). Finally, they've gone out of their comfort zone in 2017 with their brand new album “Stand”. Yes, “Stand” consists of 13 tracks and its running time is around 47 minutes!!!
Celkilt know what they fans expect from them. All of their CDs have their own trademark. However, it’s also obvious that the band is evolving and every new CD offers new things that improve the band’s universe.
The “standard” Celkilt sound can be noticed on tracks no. 3, no. 11 and no. 12. “I Don’t Have a Brain” is a Celtic pop-punk number featuring fiddle and tin whistle and lots of “Hey” shouts; “Better” is another standout, with pipes and a more “American” sound; and “The Last Day of My Life” has a traditional sounding tune showcasing fiddle and tin whistle and a fantastic percussion end.
The kick-ass bagpipes rock is represented by the opening number “Sometimes I Care” (it reminds me of AC/DC “Thunderstruck”) and “Kilt up”, the “up yer kilt” song with its short rap part towards the end.
The self-penned sets of tunes are compulsory on a Celkilt CD. There are two instrumentals on “Stand”: “Gavotte Party/Whipping Reel/Motherjigger” is an infectious Celtic rock set, while “Hornjigger” gets a “pub” treatment.
But the set of tunes are not the only numbers with a traditional feel. “All the Way” is a fantastic shanty. “Fall in Place” has a Breton feel both on singing and pipes. And even if “I Gotta Run” is a fast-paced Celtic pop-punk, the fiddle has a Hungarian twist.
The three surprises would be the ethereal “Lost and Found", “Stand”, a song that gives the latest Dropkick Murphys' album a run for their money, and “Superpower”, with its drunken backing vocals and la-la-las.
Celkilt have always had a fun approach. Some people would say that their CDs should be shorter than 33 minutes then. They’re wrong. “Stand” is as enjoyable as any of the band’s previous offerings. In fact, I’d daresay that it’s even better.
Tracking list:
01 - Sometimes I Care 2:50
02 - Kilt Up 3:11
03 - I Don’t Have A Brain 3:19
04 - Fall In Place 5:14
05 - Lost And Found 3:27

Celkilt - Kilt up!
Celkilt - Fall in Place
Celkilt - I Gotta Run

2017-02-04 ALBUM REVIEW - MUDMEN "Old Plaid Shirt" (2016)

Release date: December 9, 2016
Running time: 42:41, 11 tracks
The Mudmen were founded in 1998 by piper brothers Sandy and Robby Campbell in 1998. In almost 20 years the band from Ontario (Canada) have released 9 studio albums. The band have had different line-ups, from 6 to 5 members and the current incarnation is Sandy and Robby Campbell on bagpipes, Mike Meacher on lead vocals, mandolin and banjo, Dan Westenenk on bass and Jeremy Burton on drums.
Apart from a Celtic standards based album released in 2012, “Donegal Danny”, The Mudmen discography has neither a live album, nor a best of compilation. Obviously the band’s approach has evolved from the earlier hard-rock sound with a punk twist to the mature sound of “Old Plaid Shirt”. No worries, the top-notch pipes are always there.
My personal favorites are tracks 1, 3, 4 and 6. “Been Somewhere” kicks off with bagpipes and drums and banjo behind them. “Old Plaid Shirt” is the title track, but also an infectious pipes led number to sing along and dance. “… in an old plaid shirt they’ll bury me”. Class! Acoustic guitar can be heard at the beginning of “This Old World”; then the beat speeds up and the brilliant pipes join. “Whiskey Princess” is a rocking number, probably the catchiest track on the album together with “Old Plaid Shirt”. Other numbers that will please the fans would be “Here’s to You”, “On a Tractor”, “My Best Friend” and the rousing "Captain of Men".
“On a Plaid Shirt” is a Canadian to the bone album where musicianship and quality songwriting meet. Just give the album some spins and you’ll appreciate The Mudmen’s universe: “blue collar guys from small towns.” Enjoy!

2016-10-25 ALBUM REVIEW - WENCHES & ROGUES "s/t" (2016)

Release date: September 20, 2016
Running time: 10 tracks, 35:14
Wenches and Rogues hail from Saskatoon, in the Canadian Prairies. Kristen Ratzlaff (vocals and oboe), Pierre Bazin (vocals, bagpipes and whistle), Trevor Merrigan (guitar and bodhrán), Andrew Fitch (guitar, bass and vocals), Booker Blakely (fiddle), Carmela Brockman (accordion and bass), Curtis Dammann (drums on tracks 1,2,6,8,9 and 10) and Brennan Lane (drums on tracks 4,5 and 7) were our Band of June 2015, so I’m pleased to review their debut album.
“Wenches and Rogues” is an amazing blend of Celtic rock and folk metal with a lot of pipes, electric guitar and female vocals. The album kicks off with a fantastic set of bagpipes tunes: the standard “Scotland the Brave” and Mark Saul’s “Hellbound Train”. There are more standards, for instance “The Foggy Dew” featuring male and female vocals and great fiddle and tin whistle arrangements; “Mist Covered Mountains”, a poignant rendition which is one of the album highlights; and “Paddy’s Leather Breeches”, pipes rock at its best.
The other five tracks are self-penned songs. My faves are “Mud Hardy’s", which is a different number, because fiddle and bodhrán give a traditional twist to the tune, and the closing number “Cervantes”, a folk-metal number featuring bagpipes. “Surrender” and “Twisted” are other metal influenced songs where Kristen shines on vocals. On the other side, “Dark Island” is a slower number showcasing pipes and fiddle, and “To our Dead” is an interesting song too.
Wenches and Rogues debut album can be bought from Bandcamp. Click on the songs below, give them a listen and, if you like them as much as I do, then buy the album.
