The Basque band The Potes hails from Arrasate ("Mondra") and started in 2012. I saw them live together with Skontra at the Elorriko Gaztetxea. In 2014, Jul Bolinaga (banjo) died after a gig in Bergara. Jul was a punk legend in the Basque Country and Spain, since he was a member of RIP, The Kagas and The Meas. Besides, he was a guest playing guitar on Kortatu's third studio album.
In September 2017 The Potes opened for Ferocious Dog in Vitoria-Gasteiz.
The Potes have just released their debut album titled "Ametsak dira egi erabat bete aurretik". Twelve tracks together with a couple of bonus tracks, "La sombra del banjo" (sung in Spanish), a tribute to the late Jul, and "Harro nago". Aitor Huizi (Huntza) plays fiddle. The tracks are sung either in Basque or in English.
The album has been recorded at the band's place and at Higain estudioa. Physical copies will be available at the beginning of December at the Durangoko Azoka (Basque Book and Record Fair).
The McOnak third album "Gure naufragioak" is out and available as a Name Your Price download. Physical copies will be available at the beginning of December.
The current line-up is Koldo Sanchez (bass), Kemen Atxurra (electric guitar), Miguel Gutierrez (banjo), Joseba Iturraspe (vocals, acoustic guitar), together with new members Martzel Navarro (drums), Beñat Zaton (accordions) and Irati Irizar (fiddle). The guests on the album are Irantzu Garamendi (Cloverwind, tin whistle), Iñaki Zabaleta (Ken Zazpi, button accordion and Hammond organ), Ager Insunza (Audience).
You can download the album for free, but it'd be nice if you could leave a tip.

Spirit of Canada - Home for a Rest
(Source: Wikipedia) "Home for a Rest" is a song by Canadian folk rock band Spirit of the West, from their 1990 album Save This House. Although never officially released as a single, it is the band's signature song and is considered a classic of Canadian music.
Background and writing
Written by John Mann and Geoffrey Kelly, the song tells of a drinking spree in London. The lyrics and the musical setting clearly revel in the fun of the experience, but also show a longing for the rest and comfort of home:
“ You'll have to excuse me, I'm not at my best I've been gone for a week, I've been drunk since I left These so-called vacations will soon be my death I'm so sick from the drink, I need home for a rest. ”
The song was written during one of the band's first tours of England, and was originally more of a poem than a full-fledged song. According to producer Danny Greenspoon, the band considered it still a work in progress, and had not brought it to the primary recording sessions for the album; rather, it was brought to Greenspoon's attention only as he was about to conclude work on the project and return home to Toronto. Recognizing the song's potential, he immediately worked with the band to resolve their uncertainties about its readiness, and finally recorded it as the last song of the sessions.
British geographical references such as Euston Station, Charing Cross Road and Yorkshire appear in the lyrics. The later choruses switch the length of time that the narrator has been gone from a week to a month, and in some live performances change from a month to a year. The song's musical arrangement incorporates the traditional reels "Castle Kelly", "Glass of Beer" and "Swallow's Tail".
Live performances
"Home for a Rest" was always the final song played at the band's concert performances, excepting encores. A live performance of the song at the band's 2015 Massey Hall concert forms the climax of the 2016 documentary film Spirit Unforgettable; due to Mann's battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease, he struggles with the lyrics at first but the entire audience begins singing along.
Popularity
The song was one of two Canadian songs (the other being "Do the Bearcat" by David Wilcox) to appear on the 1998 compilation album Frosh, alongside such party anthems as Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life", The Village People's "YMCA", Denis Leary's "Asshole" and Beastie Boys' "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party!)".
In 1999, the song was named to CFNY's Top 1002 New Rock Songs of All Time, ranking 689th behind R.E.M.'s "Shiny Happy People" and ahead of Robert Palmer's "Looking for Clues". In 2007, CFNY named it No. 8 on their Top 102 Canadian New Rock Songs of All Time.
In 2005, "Home for a Rest" was named the 22nd greatest Canadian song of all time in a listener vote on the CBC Radio One series 50 Tracks: The Canadian Version.
The song is also frequently covered by other Canadian folk rock bands, including Mudmen and Enter the Haggis. Spirit of the West's original recording has also occasionally been misattributed to Great Big Sea on YouTube and in online lyrics databases. At a November 2017 fundraising benefit concert for Mann's medical care at Vancouver's Commodore Ballroom, the participants recorded a tribute version of the song onsite prior to the concert; participants included Jim Cuddy, Sarah McLachlan, Ed Robertson, Barney Bentall, Colin James, Shari Ulrich and Jim Byrnes.

As usual, the Basque band Deiedra is sharing their latest album "Ehorzlearen kantuak" for free. Anyway, it'd be nice if you could contact them and buy the physical version. Plenty of Irish/Basque ballads with a punk twist sung both in Basque and Spanish. The band consists of Hibai (lead vocals and guitar), Sergio (tin whistle) and Pablo (percussions). Among the guests, Alex and other members from Brutus' Daughters.
“Galarrena” is the long awaited McOnak’s sophomore album. Once again, the album was released at the Basque Books and Records Fair which is held every year in Durango (Biscay) at the beginning of December. Ander Marino (drums and backing vocals, from Gernika), Koldo (bass and background vocals, from Lekeitio), Kemen (electric guitar, and background vocals, from Lekeitio), Migel (banjo and background vocals, from Zumaia), Ruben (accordions, keyboards and background vocals, from Gernika) and Joseba (lead vocals and acoustic guitar, from Lekeitio) have delivered a fantastic album together with some guests, mainly Otilio Elorza on tin whistle.
Being from the coast, the title was specially chosen by the band. Galarrena in basque is a windstorm that occurs in the Cantabrian sea waters. Galarrena is also the Herriko Taberna (The People’s Tavern) in Lekeitio. And finally, “Galarrena” was also a song by a punk band from Lekeitio and Arrasate called Ume Gaiztuak that released a couple of demo tapes and a vinyl single in the 90s.
The album kicks off with “Jaso aingura”, an accordion and tin whistle led song with a Basque sound. The martial end is the first catchy moment on the album. And there are quite a few songs on “Galarrena” that are catchy as hell. For instance, “Hitz gordinak”, the first single off “Galarrena” (Remember that this song is available for free at Bandcamp )
The next track is the second single, “Bizirik” and it’s a brilliant number featuring Pogues infused accordion banjo and tin whistle arrangements and a laralala sing-along chorus at the end of the song. This song is one of the band’s hottest moments on stage as I witnessed last weekend when the band presented the album in Gernika together with Bastards. (The video for the song can be watched here )
“Gu” is a fresh number with a lively accordion and infectious chorus.
“Galarrena” is a folk song straight from the pub: the lads drinking beer and singing along. Excellent accordion work by Ruben.
McOnak move to the cow punk territory on the fast paced number “Ontzia noraezean” (featuring sax by guest Patxi Bidart) . It’s followed by the amazing bluegrass infused song “Erria txikota”, where Joseba share vocal duties with Maitane Mazmela and guest Batiz adds some guitar. Great banjo picking by Migel too.
“Ohial laranjak” is a Basque rebel song from the XXIst century. Kick ass ballad in The Pogues vein.
Another fast-paced number: “Eutsi Palestina”, a solidarity song based on the banjo, tin whistle and accordion sounds.
“Kaka zapalduta” can only be found on the sold out CD limited edition and on the digital edition. Awesome song featuring mandolin by guest Haritz “Mugar”
“Lur azpian” is a catchy pop-rock song with a Hertzainak twist where sax, keyboards and electric guitar play the major roles.
The album comes to its end with “Azken gauetan”, another badass slow number. It’s sung by Joseba and Valentina Ridolfi. The atlantic feel is obvious, I daresay there is a music link with Newfoundland. Don’t forget that Basque fishermen went to Newfounland to hunt whales in the XVIth century.
“Galarrena” has been recorded, mixed and mastered by Txortx and Pitu Etxebarrieta, who have pushed the band’s sound in the right way at the recordings sessions at MuxicOn and Altxatune studios. The album packaging is a labour of love: a digipack with a 12 page booklet with all the lyrics, line-up, guests, studio credits and thank-yous. For instance McOnak thank Shane McGowan, Gari (Iñaki Garitaonaindia from Basque seminal band Hertzainak) and Tom Waits for their music.
McOnak have already presented their album in Vigo (Galiza), Oviedo (Asturies), Vitoria-Gasteiz,and Gernika (Basque Country). Moreover, there will be playing the St.Patrick’s Day gig at Kafe Antzokia in Bilbao (March 17th 2016) and the day after they’ll be playing the VIIth St. Patrick’s Day Festival in Madrid sharing the stage with The Fatty Farmers.
I’ve been listening to this album for the last fifteen days and I can guarantee you that it’s a must have album: Basque folk, Celtic punk, Rebel songs, country…. You can find whatever you like and I’m sure that you’ll enjoy every single track. Go ahead and grab a copy!
