THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY - New EP at the beginning of May 2011

The Ramshackle Army as they shall hence forth be known have been on the march providing Celt infused Punk Rock sustenance to thirsty audiences across Melbourne and Sydney since first hitting the stage mid-2010. Armed with more 4 stringed instruments than 6, the RSA have come to deliver a service. That is, to provide an outlet for all those drunken bums who wish nothing more than to sing loud with mates even when they have no idea of the lyrics. Music designed to bring listeners out of the cold, shout “whoa whoa!” to the heavens and yell at the guy next to them that “it’s your round!”

From ol' Melbourne town, the band have been playing extensively through the pub scene building a fearsome reputation in a short time through tireless promotion, and energetic live show and a dedication to creating a brand recognition.

While still the “new kids” on the scene the RSA continue to grow their impressive resume which includes, but not limited to, venues such as:

• The Hi Fi
• The Esplanade Hotel (Gershwin and Front Bar)
• The Prince Of Wales for St Kilda Festival
• The Victoria Hotel, Brunswick for Sydney Rd Festival
• The Dan O’Connell as part of St Patrick’s Day Festivities
• The Arthouse
• The Workers Club
• The Annandale as part of Blood Sweat & Beers (Syd)
• The Harp as part of Renegades Revolution (Syd)
• Cherry Bar
• The Workers Club, Fitzroy
• The Royal Derby for a month long Residency
• The Victoria Hotel Brunswick for a month long residency

Taking pleasure in sharing the stage with many of the country’s finest proponents of punk, rock, folk punk, ska and rockabilly, the RSA seek to play to a wide and diverse audience without the restriction of “pigeonholing” or scene classifications.

The Ramshackle Army have recently added to the arsenal with their debut Independent EP "Life Lessons & Drunken Sessions" ready invade the market May 2011. Recorded at 3 Phase in Brunswick, VIC by Sam Johnson (Mindsnare, Toe to Toe, A Death in The Family, House Vs Hurricane) and mastered at Blasting Room, Fort Collins, CO. by Jason Livermore (Rise Against, A Wilhelm Scream) "Life Lessons & Drunken Sessions" is the first attempt at transferring the live energy of an RSA show to recorded format and will surely have the audience in the mood for a drunken singalong.

The future for the Ramshackle Army includes a push further into other Australian Capital Cities while growing brand and fan base through a continuation of their relentless playing and promotion, while using the dedicated online Celt punk community to begin growing the brand internationally. With so much on the horizon the noises made by the RSA are only to growing louder.

Now enough with the ranting… I’m pretty sure it’s your round.

THE MAHONES "THE BLACK IRISH", Whiskey Devil Records (2011)

The Mahones “The Black Irish”
Whiskey Devils Records
Release date: 2011
Running Time: 48:01, 12 tracks

Finally the long awaited Mahones 6th studio album is out. Yes, the wait has been too long. The previous album, “Take No Prisoners”, was released in 2006 and in the meanwhile Finny and his band only released a best-of (“Irish Punk Collection”, 2008) and a split with Catgut Mary in which no new material was included.

"The Black Irish" album was released in Europe at the beginning of January and in the USA and Canada some weeks ago. Therefore, a lot of reviews are already available on the Internet and I was wondering if I could be able to say something new and/or different. OK, I’ll do my best.

The MahonesThe Black Irish” is a strong album. The band is really tight and if you’re listening to it you will not be able to stop dancing and sing along till track no. 6, the wonderful “Girl with Galway Eyes”. Even if I always prefer their original songs than their traditional covers, I must say that this time the selection is quite good: “The Wild Rover” and “The Shamrock Shore”.

Other highlights of the album are, IMHO, “The Blood is on Your Hands” and “Give It All You Got (Or Forget About It)”, a top-notch song in which The Clash and The Rolling Stones influences can be heard.

Apart from that, a great bunch of “classic” Mahones style songs: “A Great Night on The Lash” (a tale about drinking with Shane MacGowan), “Ghost of a Whiskey Devil” and “A Pain from Yesterday”, and a song that could have been included in their “Hellfire Club Sessions” album, “Whiskey Under the Bridge” ( a Waterboys sounding song)

The top quality packaging, a digipack, shows all the credits and the pictures of all the current Mahones. Unfortunately, this time they have decided not to include a booklet with the lyrics.

After their masterpiece, “Here Comes Lucky”, The Mahones released “Take No Prisoners”. An album with a lot of guests and a great sound that, however, was a little bit disappointing (at least for me) because of the lack of good songs. Fortunately, Finny’s songwriting is at his best on “The Black Irish” album and guests such as Rick Barton (ex-DKM) and Ian Blurton are a good addition to the sound.

Remember that The Mahones will be touring Europe together with The Street Dogs from April 21st to May 22nd. Long life The Mahones!

Tracklist:

01. A Great Night On The Lash 3:42

02. Ghost Of A Whiskey Devil 4:25
03. The Wild Rover 3:17
04. A Pain From Yesterday 3:15
05. The Blood Is On Your Hands 4:21
06. Girl With Galway Eyes 3:21

BLEEDING HEARTS - Newsletter, March 2011

"We interrupt this transmission to bring you an important announcement"

Bleeders put aside their recording schedule to break out of their cupboard to do a gig. Although the recording is now complete and the delicate mixing and mastering phase is imminent, Bleeders still found time to blend some new songs with old in a gig at Stourbridge's Katie Fitzgeralds. It probably just means Foxie exhausts himself jumping up and down shouting in song rather than shouting at inanimate objects like audio converters and computers...so he says, err, I say.

It will probably be a couple of months before the new album is ready, with its cracking 10 or 11 new tunes (we ain't decided yet) as time must be found to fit everything in between a hectic political schedule of demonstrations, elections and yes.......work, that thing pays those ever increasing bills thanks to those Tory f**kwit amateurs running the country into the ground.

Ahh well, at least the middle east is rebelling......even if we just drink cups of tea and eat scones...

To save Bleeders at least a bit of time, here is Barbie's take on the Katie F's gig.....

She Brings Sun

Bleeding Hearts

19th March 2011
Katie Fitzgeralds, Stourbridge.

This was the first gig of the year for The Bleeding Hearts, and comes in the middle of recording their new album. As such it was a suitable occasion to air some of their new songs. The night was a good mix of new and old, and even though some live favourites were absent, it wasn't noticable until after the gig. The new songs worked well with the old, and the band sound tight again, despite not playing live since November last year.

The venue was a small cellar bar, and although it looked cramped on stage, Steve, Gel and Lizzie managed to find space enough to bounce around as per usual, with Gaz and Ewan holding the fort behind them. The recent addition of mandolin to band's overall sound is a good choice. With Gel and Gaz laying a solid foundation to the band's sound, and Steve cutting to the point, it allows both Lizzie and Ewan the freedom to add flavours to the sound the emphaise all the other parts. Steve did comment that Ewan's role in the band was to "keep it nice", Steve own role was to "keep it nasty". It does make for a great punk folk sound.

The set began with a firm live favourite, Democracy, and the fun never let up once. The first part of the set was a run through a selection from the past few albums, before introducing some of the new songs to the set. The first new song, Brian, was in honour of the Family Guy character, before continuing on with the likes of Screaming, The Damage You Do, Fear Of The Dark and She Brings Sun. As per usual, for Hardly Anything Gel traded in his bass for drumstick and tamborine, and frequently emulated and embelished the poses of Lizzie's fiddle playing on the opposite side of the stage. Not quite Duelling Banjos, but they're getting there ;)

Then came a run of three new songs, first Land Of Folk And Glory, followed by the very reggae influenced In The Name Of The People, which kept the groove of the night bouncing along nicely. Finally the last of the new songs, which poked fun at the social networking way of life. For the moment, until I can find a title, it shall be known as The Facebook Song. Finishing off with a couple of older songs, rather than head off to the back room only to come out a moment later to do an encore, the band remained on stage. Final song of the night, Caravan Song, bookended the set with another classic from Fly In The Face Of Fashion.

A great night, and if tonights airings are anything to go by, the new album is going to be cracker. A band not to be missed.

1) TEN SECOND MARCH (Grand Rapids, MI, USA)

Ten Second March formed in 2004 by Rob (Rotten) Costley. In 2005 the "Broken Knuckle Anthems EP" was released to critical acclaim and the band hit the road for an endless amount of shows over the next few years. In early 2007, the band released the "Noble Ribbon Boys" digital single that signaled a rebirth of sorts for the band. In the fall of 2008, the band released "The Path You Chose" on it's own Media Riot Records Imprint. The songs on this record describe a journey that most, if not all of us, can relate to. Songs like "Hey Jimmy" are a tribute to a fallen friend and brother and deal with issues of loss and grief. "Heroes of the Corner Bar" is a typical night out with our friends. The "Divided you fall" is a call out to our scene. The music is still straight up street rock with a punk influence. The themes are still working class, DIY, punk fuckin rock. Ten Second March prides itself on being nearly 100% DIY. We do all our own recording, writing, artwork, fliers, bookings, T-shirt printing, and almost everything else. We don't know how to do it any other way.

Line-up:

Chris Flap - Guitar/Mandolin/Vocals
Rob Rotten - Vocals
Chubs - Bass
Rabbit - Drums
Tommy Gun - Guitar/Acoustic/Vocals

3) THE BEER BARONS (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

Brewed in Ottawa, Ontario, the Beer Barons blend traditional celtic and folk music and deliver it with the speed and intensity of punk. Everyone who has experienced their live show is well aware of their unique style of drinking music that makes you drink faster!

Starting in the early months of 2009 The Beer Barons immediately started churning out feverishly alcohol fuelled covers of their favourite folk songs as well their own audience gripping original compositions. It was clear by the summer of 2009 that the Beer Barons, through their song writing and showmanship, were a force to be reckoned with!

Over the next couple years the Beer Barons would share the stage with peers at the top of their game such as The Mahones, The Dreadnoughts, and Farler’s Fury as well as other top notch acts from the local Ottawa scene.

In the winter of 2010 the Beer Barons released their first demo “Six Pack Sampler” themselves. It is the product of two years of whiskey, tears, and heart wrenching line up changes. Despite all the forces that were working against them the release is a success and contains an eclectic collection of songs containing humorously bawdy sing-along’s (Dicken’s Cider), epic historical ballads (Flibustier of Martinique), gritty pirate tunes (Man Overboard), and crowd pleasing favourites (Folsom Prison).

Now with a powerful new line-up and 2011 just getting started, the Beer Barons are preparing to take the scene by storm!

Line-up:

Davey Lawless - Vocals, tin whistle, harmonica
Eryk Chamberland - Guitar, backup vocals
Tom Birkhan - Drums
Sarah Grant - Bass, backup vocals

4) THE FINN MacCOOLS (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.)

The Finn MacCools brings power rock to every show, fueled by the greatest Celtic musical traditions from their hometown and around the world. The Finn MacCools combines both fresh new talent, and the fire and mastery of former members of popular Milwaukee bands Steel Bonnets and Reilly, and takes it to a whole new level. Daniel Brown has appeared with the Steel Bonnets and numerous bands up and down the Third Coast. He brings a unique organic style of hand drumming to fan the flames of The Finn MacCools explosive sound. Jim Kiley is a talented multi-instrumentalist best known as a founding member of Milwaukee's Reilly. Jim expertly drives the powerhouse sound of guitar, banjo, and mandolin way past the speed limit. Dan Smars adds his memorable voice and rich 12-string guitar, igniting blinding flashes of inspiration to the band. He is a veteran of the Milwaukee-area music scene and most recently served with distinction in the Steel Bonnets. Tom Hansen has been a staple of the Milwaukee music scene for over 20 years, appearing with acts ranging from True Heart Susie to E.W. Porter and Rockin Horse as well as Reilly. His Celtic fiddle adds a memorable spice to the rock of The Finn MacCools. Kevin Dubord brings a fresh perspective and energetic talent to his Celtic debut, infusing The Finn MacCools with his unmistakable bass guitar groove. The Finn MacCools add their fire to centuries-old traditionals, add a powerful spin to favorites by Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, the Pogues, as well as their own inspiring original songs. Come witness the birth of a new legend in Celtic music. Finally, a "reel" rock band!

6) THE GREAT DRUNKARDS (Novi Sad, Serbia)

The Great Drunkards were formed around the end of May in 2008. It all started when Gandy, Vlasta and Leo were drinking in the pub, 'twas Gandy who came up with an idea and said: "Let's make a music band"! Just a day later the band started working, looking for more and more members and playing more and more songs, to make them what they are today, the Great Drunkards. They play Irish indie/folk/rock music with a little bit of their own experiments, or how they like to say, they play the Irish "Hard Folk". As far as the name is concerned, 'twas in a merry month of June, when they were having a binge after a rehearsal, one of the members said something like: "How great drunkards we are...", and there it was, the band was named, Great Drunkards! What will happen with them in the future, nobody knows. But one thing is for sure. Their jolly spirits will never grow old.

Line-up:

Aleksandar Filipovic - Mandolin, octave mandolin, lead vocals
Vlasta Iker - Fiddle
Dejan Boljanovic - Accordion, vocals
Leo Bosnjak - Guitar, vocals

REVIEW : THE DUNN BOYS "Volume I" Self released (2011)

The Dunn Boys "Volume 1"
Release Date: 2011
Running time: 30:07, 11 tracks

Volume I” is the debut album by The Dunn Boys. The band is fronted by Jason Dunn (songwriting, vocals, mandolin, guitar, piano) backed by his brothers Josiah (drums) and Jacob (bass) and his father Paul (vocals, guitar, banjo ) and they play their own brand of Celtic rock with a Canadian twist.

The 11 track album has been produced by the band and the sound is really fresh. Neither bagpipes, nor whiskey soaked vocals, but a bunch of great catchy songs and ballads.

Mullac Abu” opens the album, a short intro that is followed by the sing-along “Nova Scotia” and “Brian Moore”, my fave and a song that will become a classic.

Track no. 4 “Ballad of Danny Fitzgerald” features piano and is a good slow number. Track no. 6, “McCreary’s Battle” is another slow number featuring accordion. Just between them, another great Celtic rock anthem, “Sydney Harbour”: mix a drop of McGillicuddys, a drop of The Peelers and some drops of Great Big Sea and you got that.

"St. Jerome" (track no. 7) also features piano. I love it because the sound is similar to Uisce Beatha, another Canadian band that released a couple of albums in the 90’s before changing their name to Red.

The next number, “Norland” is another excellent Celtic rock number with a party side. Maybe it is the most Flogging Molly sounding track of "Volume I".

Between tracks no. 9 and track no. 11 there is a good rendition of “Black Velvet Band” that follows DKM steps.

I have decided to put together “Rosaline” and “Lullaby” because these love songs featuring piano (the former) and strings arrangements (the latter) have a similar style that remembers Billy Bragg’s love songs at his “Worker’s Playtime” era.

The Dunn Boys are not from Nova Scotia, even if they mention that province in several of their songs, but from Peterborough, Ontario. They are proud of their Canadian origin and therefore they put that special stamp on all the songs they write. Perhaps the Celtic punk diehard fans may feel that some of the tracks are mellow. However I have enjoyed both sides of the band and hope to hear more from them in the near future.

Tracklist:

01. Mullac Abu 0:22
02. Nova Scotia 1:44
03. Brian Moore 1:58
04. Ballad of Danny Fitzgerald 3:20
05. Sydney Harbour 1:45
06. McCreary's Battle 3:34
07. St. Jerome 3:12
08. Norland 2.29
09. Rosaline 4:55
10. Black Velvet Band 3:20
11. Lullaby 3.25

Early one November me Uncle Tommy joined the army,
Kitted him out for danger & ferried him o'er the sea,
He threw me o'er his shoulder, sang to me a dirty ditty,
Telling me when I were older "you'll be just like me",
A half a bottle o' whisky, tattoo of a pretty lady,
Half a dozen Havana's & his Aunties rosary,
A-thunderin' oe'r the border, guns a-blazin', hells a-raisin',
"Here I am ya bastards, ye'll no be havin' me!"

[CHORUS]
Tommy was a rifle, Tommy was a razor,
Tommy was a ramblin' man,
A silver blade in the dyin' shade,
Oor Tommy was a fightin' man!

The following December he sent a card to Auntie Annie,
Tellin' her he were frozen half to death upon a hill,
Sick o' the sound o' trash cans, kickin' in doors on dear old ladies,
Sick o' the screamin' babies, he had lost the bottle tae kill.

[CHORUS] x2

He earn't his scars in German bars,
And breakin' the hearts o' the maids o' Norway,
Trained his guns upon the Huns,
And boxed the sons o' proud old Galway,
Tommy was a rifle, Tommy was a razor,
Tommy was a Ramblin' man,
Quick with a pound when yer luck was down,
Oor Tommy was a Jerry can.

Early one November me Uncle Tommy left the army,
Stripped him o' his regalia & ferried him o'er the main,
He took me by the shoulder, sang to me a dirty ditty,
"bastard's only love ye when ye're shootin' at yer ain!"

THE RUMJACKS "An Irish Pub Song"

An Irish Pub Song is the 2nd "single" of The Rumjacks debut album 'Gangs Of New Holland'. It is a piss take at the explosion of Irish Pubs in Australia and the bastardisation of a culture.

The video was filmed and directed by Nathan Macdonald for Fat Boy Films Australia.

LYRICS:

Theres a county map to go on the wall,
A hurling stick & a shinty ball,
The bric, the brac, the craic & all,
Lets call it an Irish pub,
Caffreys, Harp, Kilkenny on tap,
The Guinness pie & that cabbage crap,
The ideal wannabee Paddy trap,
We'll call it an Irish pub,

Whale, oil, beef, hooked! I swear upon the holy book,
The only 'craic' you'll get is a slap in the ear,
Whale, oil, beef, hooked! I'll up & burst yer filthy mug,
If you draw one more shamrock in me beer!

We'll raise the price o' beer a dollar,
We'll make em wear a shirt & collar,
We'll fly a bloody tri-colour,
And call it an Irish pub,
Jager bombs & double shots,
The underagers think its tops,
We'll spike the drinks & pay the cops,
We got us an Irish pub.

The quick one in the filthy bog,
The partin' glass across the lug,
O' the lady-O, the dirty dog,
We got us an Irish pub,
It's over to me and over to you,
We'll skip along the Avenue,
And who t'hell is Ronnie Drew?
We got us an Irish pub.

Plasma screens & neon lights,
Kara-farkin-oke nights,
The bouncers they can pick the fights,
We'll call it an Irish pub,
Plastic cups, a polished floor,
We'll hose the blood right out the door,
And let the knucklers back for more,
We got us an Irish pub,

Oh top o' the mornin', Garryowen,
Kiss me I'm Irish, Molly Malone,
Failte, Slainte, Pog ma thon,
We got us an Irish pub,
Spike the punch & strip the willow,
Strike me up the rakes o' Mallow,
The Liffey never ran so shallow,
We got us an Irish pub.

THE RUMJACKS "Green Ginger Wine" (Live)

Green Ginger Wine is a duet with Sim Shame from our debut album 'Gangs Of New Holland' and when performed live in Sydney we are sometimes graced with her amazing presence and voice.

This clip was cut together by Nathan McDonald from Fatboy Films Australia.

Filmed at the Sando pub on King Street, Newtown for the The Rumjacks album launch "Gangs of New Holland".

Filmed with 3 Sony Z1, 4 HD Lipstick cameras and 1 Canon HD camera.

Edited and colour graded in Final Cut Pro.

PIPES AND PINTS - ST. Patrick's Gigs

This is the info from London Celtic Punks about the London Gig:

"SAINT PATRICKS WEEKEND GIG!

Another Guinness and (Irish) whiskey fuelled night of celtic-punk on the Saturday after St Patricks Day. March 19th, with debut London show from Pipes and Pints from Prague in the Czech Republic...

"Pipes And Pints continue to combine Punk Rock and Rock 'n' Roll with dirty folk and are always looking for new ways to keep their music fresh. Brisk guitars, supported by the sometimes dreamy, sometimes raw ...sound of Highland Bagpipes, are complemented by the expressive performance of singer Syco Mike from San Diego"

And from the deep sarf of London its Drunken Balordi...

"Imagine if Joe Strummer and Shane McGowan were having a drink when they were joined by a band of Gypsy Folk musicians from the Balkans and in their inebriated state started jamming. Well imagine no more, the incarnation lives on in Drunken Balordi"

and opening the night, half from longford and half from london, with some noisy hardcore punk rock its Poisoned Legacy
think thats it...

The gig's at Mannions Prince Arthur and is Tottenhams premier Irish boozer and is only 5 minutes walk from Seven Sisters tube station on the Victoria line.(when you arrive at Seven Sisters tube follow the signs on the platform for the buses. When you leave the barriers check the signs again for Broad Lane and when you leave the station that's the road that runs alongside the Tesco. Mannions is just a wee walk and is painted green and cannot be missed)

Doors open at 8.bands at 9.open till 2 at least or maybe later, depends on the landlord!

Celtic-punk disco after the bands, playing anything Irish we can think of!

It's also guaranteed to be the cheapest pint you'll drink at a gig in ages!

Need to publicise this gig far and wide as we need a decent crowd to pay the bands a fair whack. Remember this all DIY so we make no money. All money goes to pay the PA and the bands.

So please forward it to anyone you think may be interested.
cheers.
