“[Nuevos]  Cantares de Chigre” is a compilation of “pub songs” from Asturias,  a Celtic region in the North West of Spain, between Galicia and Cantabria. The word chigre refers to a traditional bar in which the main drink is cider. The guys of the label Algamar Producciones thought that it would be a fantastic idea to give a new lease of life to the songs that the Asturian people used to sing at the chigres. Then, they contacted 15 bands playing different genres and  “[Nuevos]  Cantares de Chigre” was born. Nuevos (new) is put into brackets because the songs are old, but the arrangements are new.

For those who love rock’n’roll, the songs to pick up would be Crudo’s hard-rock rendition of “Baxaben cuatro ayeranos”, the Rolling Stones infused cover of “Chufa Xixon a súa playa” by Bacotexo and the punk-rock version of Laviana ‘s unofficial anthem “Chalaneru” by Fe de Ratas.

But if you like fun and fusion beats for dancing, jumping and enjoying a full bottle of cider, then you should try La Tarrancha “De Tazones a Candás”, brilliant ska number in the Mano Negra vein featuring accordion and brass section,  Skama La Rede cover of “Rebolleres. Soi de Verdiciu”, another band playing ska-punk with bagpipes and trumpet, and the party folk rock number recorded by Spanta la Xente (whistle, pipes and fiddle together with electric instruments), the well-known “Dicen que van a poner (ferrocarril en Mieres)”.

Alfredo Gonzalez  has recorded a cover of  “Nel campu nacen flores”, a song that can also be found on Dixebra’s last CD. Alfredo’s song has a British folk-rock twist that could be linked to Alan Prosser (Oysterband’s guitarist). The miner’s unofficial anthem “Santa Barbara Bendita” (aka “Nel pozu María Luisa”) has been recorded by Bueno. Even if it’s not a rocking number, the rendition is very good. Tania Pereira sings an intimate rendition of “Carretera d'Avilés” perfectly backed by guitarist Luke Bowman, who gives a Christy Moore atmosphere to the song.

And what about straight Celtic-punk numbers? OK, I admit that I should have written about this one at the beginning of the review. But surprises are always kept till the very last minute. The new Asturian Celtic punk band Cilvrnigans deliver a mandolin led fast-paced version of “La romería de San Andrés”

LA TARRANCHA - NEW ALBUM SOON

The Asturian band La Tarrancha will be issuing their second album soon. It will be released under a Creative Commons licence. In the meanwhile, you can listen to their first single, "Somos" at their MySpace site.

It's a Celtic punk number based on the traditional tune Muñeira de Bargaz. The rest of the album will have reggae, ska and funk songs together with Celtic music from Brittany and Asturies.

I had already posted this album on the Spanish blog and I feel that it's the right moment to post it on the international version.

La Tarrancha come from Asturies and play party music (ska, reggae ...) with traditional instruments (flutes, melodeon). A sort of Asturian Edward The Second And The Red Hot Polkas.
