If Celtic punk was born in London with The Pogues, bagpipes punk was born in British Columbia (Canada) with The Real McKenzies. Amazing Canadian bagpipes punk bands released some kick-ass albums, but they are sadly defunct (The Tartan Hearts from Alberta and Farler’s Fury from Quebec). Fortunately a new band from Ladysmith, British Columbia, arrived in 2016: The Grinning Barretts. They released a fantastic four track demo that reached no. 5 at our Best EPs of 2016.

After some changes, the new line-up is Pat Westmacott (guitar, vocals), Dylan Wickham (guitar, banjo, vocals), Aaron Bergen and Kevin Dougan (bagpipes, whistles), Bern Kinnear (bass) and Jeremy Fiddy (drums). The Grinning Barretts are currently the official house band at Riot Brewing Co. in Chemainus, the best brewery on Vancouver Island, and they released a 7 track CD last St-Patrick’s Day. The title, “The St. Padraig’s EP”.

The Grinnning Barretts “The St. Padraig’s EP” is a brilliant EP (or even mini-album). The first song on the EP is “Plutocrass”, a shot at the rich bastards who own news outlets, and pay them to lie so they can get richer. This excellent number was already on the demos and has the band’s trademark: pipes, guitars and  oi! singalong chorus.

Track no. 2 is called "W&B". Bagpipes open and then the full band joins. If you like the Dropkick Murphys early stuff, this is a song for you. I’d daresay that they give DKM a run for their money if we take into account the Murphys last album.

“Kudatah” kicks off with bass, electric guitar and drums before the pipes are added. The sound is raw, with in yer face pipes, gang vocals and an electric guitar part before the end of the song.

The first traditional number on “The St. Padraig’s EP” is a Scottish song, “Wild Mountain Thyme” aka “Will Ye Go Lassie, Go”. This song was covered by The Real McKenzies on their second album “Clash of the Tartans”. Curiously, The RMCK rendition has no pipes. The Grinning Barretts deliver a badass cover full of pipes and guitars. The song finishes up a cappella.

The second traditional song on the EP is “Black Velvet Band”. The name of some places have been changed (Nelson in BC instead of Belfast) and the song reminds of the Dropkick Murphys cover with its gang vocals. However The Grinning Barretts rendition is full of pipes and they have added a traditional pipes tune too. Better? Worse? Different. I’d say better, but I admit that the Grinning Barretts cover wouldn’t exist without the Murphys previous version.

“UFS” is oi! at its best.  The chorus is so infectious that I can’t help but sing along.

The last song on the album is another celtic oi! gem, the fast-paced “To Your Name”. When one thinks that the song is over, there is a brilliant pipes solo.

“The St. Padraig’s EP” can be bought from Bandcamp, where the lyrics to all of the songs are available too. If you like bagpipes punk and oi! bands such as Harrington Saints or Bishops Green, this is the EP that you should add to your collection. A bagpipes punk must have.

2018-03-08 EP REVIEW - RAISE MY KILT "A New Tartan" (2018)

Before you get overwhelmed by all the CDs that are going to be released next St. Patrick’s Day, I’d like to draw your attention to the new offering by Raise My Kilt. The bagpipes punk band from Buenos Aires was one of the best surprises of 2017. Their first CD “Gaitas and Tanos” consisted of 4 tracks. Luckily, the lads have recorded 6 numbers for their long awaited sophomore EP “A New Tartan”.

The new EP follows a similar path to the previous one. The balance between covers and new stuff is spotless. “A New Tartan” kicks off with the title track, a kick-ass instrumental intro. The early Dropkick Murphys and Black Tartan Clan come immediately to mind.

“New Arcadia” is a banjo led punk number with an electric guitar part that features the well-known “John Ryan’s Polka” at the end of the song.

Ewan MacColl’s “Dirty Old Town” gets a Black Tartan Clan meets Ramones treatment while “1982” is a brilliant street-punk that Pipes & Pints fans will enjoy.

Great minds think alike! Galician band Bastards on Parade used to play Cock Sparrer “We’re Coming Back” at the end of their gigs. And Raise My Kilt deliver an amazing cover based on banjo and pipes.

Finally, Raise My Kilt play their own rendition of “Scotland the Brave”.

If you like Black Tartan Clan or the early Mudmen, Raise My Kilt is your new fave. At least they are my bagpipes punk band of the moment. Come on guys! Six songs are not enough. We need the debut album asap!!!

We have a strong relationship with Les Tricards. The band from Colmar (France) has been releasing a lot of singles and EPs for free and they have always sent to us their new stuff straightaway. Les Tricards have just issued their debut album “Saint Pogo”. This time, it’s not free, but this should not put a damper on the sales: only 4 Euros for 12 songs is a gift.

Les Tricards is a solo project by Loran. Who is Loran? Loran and his brother Alain, aka the Duduche bros, were the bassist and drummer at Kromen, an Alsatian streetpunk/oi! band that was active between 1.991 and 1.996. Their mate Fred aka Randu (lead vocals) committed suicide in 1996. The Duduche bothers kept on rehearsing and writing music and then a new band was born with the help from some friends: 2’dTension. 2’dTension was active between 1997 and 2016, but Loran started a side-project in 2011: Les Tricards. Les Tricards is Loran’s solo band, but Alain adds the background vocals.

Les Tricards’ new delivery is a 12 track album. Loran has re-recorded two old songs, “Ma Révolution” from the “Ma Révolution” EP (2012) and “On est Tricard” from the “Un poing c’est tout” EP (2011). “La peste et le cholera” was previously released as a single too, but the other 9 tracks are never previously released songs.

“Saint Pogo” kicks off with “Chantez”. It’s an intro with almost no lyrics: a 1-2-3-4 shout and some “chantez, chantez, woah” and “chantez, Les Tricards, chantez, Les Tricards” (sing, sing, woah and sing, sing, Les Tricards). A good intro to sing along featuring attractive bass lines and pipes.

The next track reminds me of Bérurier Noir “Jim la jungle”. Obviously I’m not talking about the music, but about the lyrics. Excellent bagpipes (street)punk number.

“Saint Pogo” was advanced on YouTube before the album was released. Another streetpunk drinking number with Les Tricards DNA.

“Monsier Blanc Cassis” is a song about a beauf (beau frère, brother in law). In French, a beauf is a racist, a “ronchon” (grumpy) and a “réac” (reactionary, right wing). Mister Blanc Cassis feels that he’s got the blues. He doesn’t go to the pubs, he doesn’t quarrel with the muslim people and he is not going to the Front National rallies anymore. Finally, his wife tells him that he has not got the blues: he has evolved as a human being and he has the right feelings now. In other words, he’s not a stupid anymore. This song features Loran’s wife on female vocals.

The following track is a traditional number with new lyrics: “Dans les prisons de Nantes”. Maybe some fans will remember that the German band Waxie’s recorded this song on their debut album “The Prisoner” (1995). Les Tricards rendition is a kick-ass number to sing out.

“Le vent se lève” is a fast-paced number that streetpunk fans will enjoy. It’s followed by “La peste et le choléra”, a song about the French elections, and the bagpipes punk anthem “Ma révolution”. The new version of “Ma révolution” is a little bit shorter than the original, 3:00 instead of 3:39.

Track no. 9 will become soon a crowd favorite: “Ouarglo”. Amazing Celtic oi! number about drinking: we always promised that it’s the last one, but we keep on drinking.

“Les pieds dans le plat” is one of the band’s calling cards: “Les Tricards sont là, Les Tricards vous emmerdent” (Les Tricards have arrived, f*ck you)

The lyrics for the next song are a sort of tale about free will, an "unrequited love" and Jean de La Fontaine’s fable "The Fox and the Grapes”. Strange lyrics, but interesting music anyway.

The closing number is the new version of “Les Tricards”, the other calling card on the album. This time, the new version is longer than the original, 2:48 vs 2:44.

“Saint Pogo” is a digital release and can be bought from bandcamp. All of the lyrics in French are available at Bandcamp too.

Les Tricards haver their roots in the French oi! scene from the 90’s, that is, the Chaos Productions bands: Reich Orgasm, Kidnap, Les Collabos, Trotskids, Komintern Sect …. If you have downloaded Les Tricards previous releases, you know what to expect from their debut album. However, if you have never listened to Les Tricards and you love streetpunk, oi! and bagpipes, then give them a try.

“Our Storied Past”, The Scally Cap Brats second album, was released last March 31. The band from Ottawa have recorded 10 new tracks and re-recorded the 4 tracks from their previous effort, the “Don’t Look Back” EP. Regarding the music, The Scally Cap Brats remain faithful to the street punk and oi! sounds. Usually they are more Bishops Green and Harrington Saints than Booze & Glory and Gimp Fist if you know what I mean.

All the re-recorded tracks are shorter than the EP versions. My fave is “Barry Square”, which has got a new lease of life. “The Shiners War” also differs from their previous take (remember that the one on “Don’t Look Back” was an acoustic version)

There are a couple of numbers featuring bagpipes: tracks no. 6 “Take Me Away” and tracks no. 12 “Lonely Days & Drunken Night”. The former is an amazing song and the latter has a Dropkick Murphys twist. As you probably know, The Scally Cap Brats love Dropkick Murphys debut album “Do or Die”, so it’s normal to find another early Dropkick Murphys infused number: “No Matter What”.

So, which are IMHO the highlights on the album (together with “Barry Square” and “Take Me Away”)? “Going Down the Line”, an awesome North American oi! anthem, “Help Your Heroes”, a catchy street punk number à la Gimp Fist, the mandolin driven “18th to 21st” and the opening track “Our Storied Past”.

“Our Storied Past” comes in a clear jewel case with lyric booklet, artwork by mandolin player Mike Franey. A vinyl version will be available in Summer 2015.

The Scally Cap Brats keep on evolving as a band and their latest album is a well-balanced collection of self-penned songs.

REVIEW - AULD CORN BRIGADE "Rebels till the End" (2013)

Auld Corn Brigade have been around for a while, blending the Wolfe Tones and streetpunk. If their debut album “A Fighter’s Lullaby” was full of Rebel songs,  their follow-up, the 4 track EP “Our Flag, proved  that the boys and girls from Nordhausen were able to defend their own material.

“Rebels till the End” is obviously their most mature effort to date. The album lists 14 tracks and 10 of them are self-penned songs. The main songwriter is lead vocalist/guitarist/bass player Nico, but fellow member Marko has co-written one song with him, “Old Lullaby”. A small change in the line-up can be noticed. Bassist Klaus is no longer on board but there is a new member playing accordion, piano, tin whistle and fiddle: Eric.

Yes, there is a musical evolution, but the band’s  DNA has not varied. Lyrics are rebel songs; from the XXIst century, but as rebel as ever. The lyrics cover Irish topics (emigration in “Sheila and Shawn”,  fighters for freedom in “Graves of the Fallen Soldiers”), but there are also numbers about worldwide “problems” (“Financial Times”), underlying racism (“Idyllic Small Town”), rugby anthems (“Seamrog Song” and “Come Back Home”), a tribute to Sankt Pauli football club and neighbourhood (“Forza Sankt Pauli”) and even a drinking song (“Old Lullaby”).

My fave numbers, following the track order: “1605” (a song about Guy Fawkes day), ”Sheila and Shawn” (fantastic chorus to sing-along and excellent guitar work), “Seamrog Song” (one of the best songs on the album), “Come Back Home” (featuring “Auld Lang Syne” on tin whistle at the end of the song), “Old Lullaby” (an infectious number. At the beginning Nico sings a capella, then the rest of the band joins. Excellent  banjo picking and clapping at the end), “Ydillic Small Town” (another street punk anthem), “Day to Day” (the single, ACB covering Gary Bolstad), “Forza Sankt Pauli” (a live favourite), “Donny brook Fair” (ACB return to their beloved territory, Irish ballads), “Rose of No Man’s Land” (another cover about the Red Cross nurses in WW I) and their amazing rendition of “South Australia”. Maybe a couple of details could have been improved. Fiddle and tin whistle get the right treatment, but perhaps the accordion is a little bit hidden in the mix. Besides, I feel that in some songs the electric instruments sound stronger than Nicole Vocals.

Auld Corn Brigade have remained faithful to Bad Dog Records and their label has released the CD in a digipack once again. As you can see, the artwork is awesome. I guess that Auld Corn Brigade will sell a lot of t-shirts with the skeleton-fiddler.

Congrats to Auld Corn Brigade for their evolution as a Celtic streetpunk band. If they keep on growing in future releases, they’ll become an essential band.

Usually we have to wait around two years to get a new album from the band we love. Fortunately, some bands release EPs the year after having issued an album and then the wait is not too long. Canadian oi! and folk band The Scally Cap Brats have made our holidays happier than expected with their brand new EP "Don't Look Back": a couple of oi! anthems with amazing sing-along chorus ("Barry Square", "You Never Know"), a mandolin driven catchy song ("Dress Sharp, Drink Hard") and a back to basics folk-punk song ("The Shiner's War").

Otawa’s finest band The Scally Cap Brats have just released their debut album: “Let Us Drink, For We Must Die”. Twelve honest Celtic punk-rock numbers with Oi! influences on an album that it’s said to be a sort of a tribute to their heroes, Dropkick Murphys.

The Scally Cap Brats were one of the best newcomers of 2011. The “Take a Shot” EP was highly appreciated by both fans and critics because of their back to basics sound and their high voltage energy. With a small line-up change (bassist Katherine Maziec left the band and was replaced by Danny DeVille), the guys recorded their debut album between February and March 2012 at Yogi’s Metalocker Studios in Ottawa.

All of the tracks are originals and 4 out of the 5 songs from the “Take a Shot” EP have been re-recorded. Yes, they have been re-recorded and they are shorter now. New arrangements, a better studio and better production have given a new lease of life to kick-ass songs like “The Scally Cap Brats” and “Take a Shot”.  But their classics tracks are not the core of the album.  The CD is really strong and well-balanced:  an amazing DKM sounding intro, a catchy tribute to the Boston influential band (“Let Us Drink, For We Must Die”), a pirate number à la McGillicuddys ("The Pirate’s Life”), an oi! anthem (“Barfly”) ….

The most important thing is that you get exactly what you expect. The lads state that their influences are Dropkick Murphys, The Street Dogs and The Mahones. Then you can be sure that you’ll hear those bands on the SCB songs.  They also say that “Do or Die” was pivotal to their formation. Then lyrics, attitude and line-up will confirm this. No frills. No fiddle, no pipes … just an excellent mandolin by Mike Farney (a.k.a.
