REVIEW - THE FIGHTING JAMESONS "S/t" (2011)

The Fighting Jamesons "s/t" self-released
Release date: November 10th, 2011
Running time: 29: 25, 8 tracks

The Fighting Jamesons are a band from Norfolk, Virginia. I guess that most of the Celtic punk fans didn’t know this band whose 8 track self-titled debut album was released in November. However, the album has topped no.5 at Paddyrock’s “Best of Celtic Rock & Punk for 2011” and everybody is asking now “who the hell are these guys

Eight tracks, less than 30 minutes and three standards. The second question is “Is the album really so good?”. Fans won’t need to give several spins to the CD to have an answer. A tight band featuring a competent rhythm section and a brilliant fiddler (a guy, not a girl). Good self-penned songs and awesome arrangements. If you have read previous reviews on this e-zine, you will know that normally I’m sick and tired of standards songs. This is not the case, The Fighting Jamesons know how to arrange these songs with gusto and give them a new life.

Ghost Ship Baltimore” is a rocking song in the Flogging Molly tradition featuring banjo and fiddle. The band sounds as if they were a racing car, full of energy and speed.

The second track is “Tell Me Ma”. The energy on this track is the same that you can found on a British festival band like The Tofu love Frogs.

One More Drink” is another own song. The sound is more American and I could file it together with the Brick Top Blaggers’ stuff.

Another self-penned song is “Uncle Michael”, calm at the beginning, fast-paced later and excellent guitar and fiddle work. Some reminiscences of The Tossers too.

As I have told previously, the band has really worked hard on the standards arrangements. Drummer, bassist and fiddler shine on this rendition of “Drunken Sailor”. Maybe Mike Powers vocals are at his highest peak on this track.

One of my faves is track no. 7 “Sink”. I feel that it must be one of the hottest moments on stage

"The Irish Rover" has been covered by almost every single band in the Celtic punk scene, but fiddle, drums and vocals make this version quiet enjoyable.

The last number turns to another end, the polka-gypsy-eastern Europe sound.

Taking into account that this CD is too short, I guess that The Fighting Jamesons will be able to release another album next year. I am aware that the music market is in a hard situation, but albums by bands such as The Fighting Jamesons (one of the newcomers of 2011) should be released every year.

REVIEW - LA MARAVILLOSA ORQUESTA DEL ALCOHOL "No Easy Road" (2011)

La Maravillosa Orquesta del Alcohol "No Easy Road", Self-released
Release date: 2 December 2011
Running Time: 21:42, 6 tracks

La Maravillosa Orquesta del Alcohol (La MODA) is a 7 piece band from Burgos (Spain). It's not easy to define their music. Obviously, they are influenced by The Pogues, but their music is not Celtic. They say to be influenced by them, but they also admit some influences like Johnny Cash and Goran Bregovic. So, you should know what to expect: American folk, Balkan and Eastern Europe music played mainly with guitars, accordion, fiddle and sax together with bass and drums.

Their 6 track debut EP is the evidence that interesting music with a folk feeling can be made without being only Celtic. Production and arrangements are quite good for a self-released debut recording. And, when you listen to Dabid’s vocals, you look forward to going to one of their shows.

Masters of the World” is a good opening track featuring accordion, good drums and a catchy chorus.

The fiddle led track, “Just Sing Loud” also stands out, with an excellent percussion once again.

No Easy Road” is another fav featuring accordion and sax. I must say that normally I love the sound of the sax, but too often bands choose the wrong sax arrangements and the songs are not improved. However, La MODA knows how to write a good song featuring sax. Hats-off, boys!

Track no. 4 is “Sinking & Singing”, a duet boy-girl. Maybe I feel that the girl’s vocals should be “stronger”. No, she doesn’t sing out of tune, but I feel that perhaps Dabid’s vocals show more passion. Anyway, it’s an awesome song.

The last tracks are two songs wit a more American sound: “Baker Street” and “Underground Blues

As I have said, an enjoyable band. I don’t know how their shows are, but taking into account Dabid’s antics, I can expect a band with special clothes and a theatrical show on stage. Check them out.

PIPES AND PINTS BACK ON STAGE

Pipes and Pints back on stage and ready to get on the road with the Mighty Božkov Tour 2012

Pipes and Pints, a successful Czech punk rock band that took a break earlier this year, are getting back on stage. In celebration of their comeback, the band will play Prague’s Lucerna Music Bar on the 2nd of February. This concert will kick off the Mighty Božkov Tour, a string of concerts taking place in Czech ski resorts, the first half of which will be headlined by Pipes and Pints.

In February, Pipes and Pints will be back playing live shows after a break that lasted several months: "After much deliberation we all agreed we did not want to throw away what we have achieved together. We came to the decision to continue in the original line-up" says Vojta, the band’s vocalist and bagpiper.

The grand return of the prodigal sons of punk rock at the Lucerna Music Bar will be supported by performances from two other bands. Receiving tumultuous ovations after their last show in the Czech Republic, the UK-based combo Buster Shuffle will deliver a playful mix of ska, rocksteady, and 2-tone. The night will begin with a performance by the winner of the Bandzone Showcase 2011 competition, a band called Wild Tides. Injecting a healthy dose of unruly fury into their shows, this band is sure to surprise with a Pulp Fiction-styled surf rock.

After the opening show in Prague, The Mighty Božkov Tour spring edition will rampage through Czech ski resorts. Other Czech bands, such as Fast Food Orchestra and The Spankers among others, will take their turns playing on the tour. REVIEW - THE SWAGGERIN' GROWLERS "Outlaw Waltz" (2011)

The Swaggerin' Growlers "Outlaw Waltz" Thugly Goose Records
Release date: October 1st, 2011
Running time: 39:41, 11 tracks

What have in common The Swaggerin’ Growlers and The Dreadnoughts? Both of them feel umconfortable under the “Celtic” label and therefore their music is open to other influences. Apart from that, I guess that both of them are essentially live bands.

Outlaw Waltz” is the third album by the Boston folk-punk-riot band. Once again the album is a gumbo of punk, folk, Irish music, country music, circus music, waltz … Normally musicians and fans complain because the spirit of live performance is difficult to find on studio recordings. I have never attended to a Swaggerin’ Growlers gig, but I can say that this SG album must be close to a real live experience.

Some tracks that you should check out: “The Booze Will Flow” (a Bloody Irish Boys sounding song), “The Legendary Fred Simard” (a circus music song à la Dreadnoughts), “Six Strings and Gasoline” (if you loved “A Pint and a Fight” by Calico Street Riot, you will enjoy this too), “All I Want” (sort of ska featuring the reel “The Musical Priest”)… I would have changed the order of some tracks and I would have placed track no. 9, “Reckless”, at the end of the album. IMHO, it would work better than “Outlaw Waltz” as closing track.

Unfortunately, The Swaggerin’ Growlers live schedule is not so busy as that of other similar bands and, as far as I know, they have never toured Europe. Thus, SG keep on being an underrated band (at least on this side of the ocean) and some fans are not familiar with them. If you are a Dreadnoughts fan, you are sad because they have decided to call their quits and you have never heard The Swaggerin’ Growlers, maybe it’s time you checked the SG whole discography. You’ll love them.

"Foot Stompin' Irish Music For The Masses Formed in early 2000 by percussionist Brian Reilly and original guitarist Johnny O'Donnell, plans were laid for the unique sound for which Reilly is now known. Following the tragic death of Brian Reilly in August of 2000 and a subsequent loss of band personnel, O'Donnell sought to keep the torch burning, and enlisted guitarist/vocalist Patrick Moores and multi-instrumentalist Jim Kiley to help rebuild the group. After another parting of personnel, bassist/vocalist Chris Carter and drummer Brian Bruendl joined the fold, seeking to form the group's trademark booming rhythm section. Carter left the group in late 2002 to pursue other interests, and was aptly replaced by fellow Irishman and scene veteran Michael "Tinker" Tierney on bass and vocals. Following St. Patrick's Day 2001 Bruce Dean joined on accordion-with-attitude to complete the sound. A few hundred pub gigs later, Reilly released their Debut CD in December of 2002. Self-produced by Bruce and the band, "Beyond the Pale" is a collection of Reilly originals and traditional Celtic tunes that have been "De-ranged" by the group in their own style, which seeks to meld the tradition and history of Ireland with the energy and instrumentation of the rock music the band is influenced by. From the Celtic-Blues of "On the Dole", to the pounding version of the Luka Bloom favorite "City of Chicago", to the new Milwaukee pub favorite "Sinner's Sermon", "Beyond the Pale" has something for all music lovers, especially lovers of contemporary Irish music. Reilly strives to entertain crowds with both original tunes, and music by contemporary Irish artists, as well as traditional Celtic tunes performed in as much of an energetic, hand clapping and foot stomping manner as possible - and to have a good time doing it. The boys in the band seek to celebrate Ireland's musical heritage (and their own) with anyone who will listen, and will do so at any festival, pub, or celebration where such a lively musical feast can be savored. REILLY ROCKS IRISH - and they're looking to prove it to you soon!"

3) THE IRISH EXPERIENCE (Seattle, WA, U.S.A.)

http://www.myspace.com/irishexperience

http://www.facebook.com/irishexperience
http://www.reverbnation.com/irishexperience

"The Irish Experience was formed in 1996 to entertain pub crowds on Saint Patrick's Day, and their music quickly found a much broader appeal. Attracting fans of all ages, their upbeat music has been praised for guiding folks through the gnarly turns and tempering their road rage.

"The Irish Experience play Celtic and Appalachian music on traditional electric instruments."

Their self-titled first CD is a top seller on iTunes and Rhapsody. On "Green Energy", their second release, The Irish Experience return with more electrifying fiddle, rock guitar, downright doghouse bass, and masterful drums.

"The Irish Experience is a festive force, an insatiable jig. The Irish Experience is renewed vigor. It's high-impact, Celtic music at its finest." "

"Chainsaw-folk vigilantes The Crooked Fiddle Band deliver a no-holds-barred celebration of dark, ecstatic energy. Holding nothing sacred (or is it everything?) tCFB intertwine folk traditions with modern evolutions, spurring the dance floor into a post-apocalyptic hoedown.

The Sydney based four piece are equally at home in the late-night revelry of The Famous Speigeltent, underground warehouse parties and in the concert hall, playing for Brian Eno's Luminous Festival at the Sydney Opera House."

6) LIME AND STEEL (Central West Region, NSW, Australia)

Ian MorrisonLinkSkye Mustafa
Ben Scott - Low whistle, guitar & mandolin.

Discography:

"Tales of Love, Murder ... and Trains"

"Sink your teeth into a rich vein of Irish trad, bluegrass and modern Australian folk from the Blue Mountains. Vocal harmonies and Irish low whistle move into driving bluegrass banjo and stomping jigs on the uillean pipes, all held together by the rich pulse of double bass and tasty brushed up percussion on an old rosewood snare and a hatbox. Recent gigs: Blue Mountains Folk Festival; Winter Magic Festival; St Albans Folk Festival.

Lime and Steel play original folk songs with an eye to their history. Stories sung with an authentic Australian voice: ranging from everyday beauty and terror on public transport, to bluegrass-inspired goldfields murder ballads and songs of unlikely love in precarious colony.

Hailing from the misty Blue Mountains, Lime and Steel have two singer-songwriters, Ben Scott and Paddy Connor. Ben is also to be found in bearded bonding sessions with the Spooky Men's Chorale. He plays low whistle and does some tasty finger-picking guitar & mandolin.

Paddy plays Irish whistles, Uillean pipes and 3-finger banjo, while bashing away at guitar and any other instrument that will distract him from his day job. Ben and Paddy have more recently been joined by the sweet brushes and hat-box thumping of Ian Morrison."

HAVE YOU SENT YOUR LIST?

Only two weeks and we'll know the TOP 10 (albums) and TOP 5 (EPs).

If you have not send your votes, do it a.s.a.p.

1) Three CDs can be won. A draw will decide the 3 winners.

2) I have decided to include some albums that were released at the end of 2010. Even if they were released in 2010, I think that we can consider them as 2011 releases. Besides, they were not voted in any top ten list last year.

3) There are two categories: albums and EPs. The second category covers mini-albums, EPs and/or demos.

4) For the full albums, the list will be a Top Ten

5) For the EPs, the list will be a Top Five

6) You should send a full Top Ten list and a full Top Five list.
Please be honest and fair. You should vote the best albums and EPs, not the best bands.
For instance, if you like a well-known band from L.A. but you agree with me that the last album is not good, you should not vote them (even if they are one of the best live bands in the world) Give your votes to them only if you have really enjoyed their last album.
If you don't know a band, but the name it's funny, you should not give your votes to that band.
I prefer that you vote only 6 albums and 3 EPs( if that's really what you have enjoyed) than to get full lists on which there are albums/EPs by bands that you have never heard (of).

7) E-MAILS VOTING ONLY ONE ALBUM OR LISTS THAT INCLUDE THE SAME ALBUM TEN TIMES WILL NOT BE VALID

8) Regarding the EPs/demos/Mini albums, many tracks or full recordings can be found on this blog as free downloads or as a part of the Samplers. Moreover, many tracks can be listened to at Reverbnation or MySpace (just check the links on the reviews)

9) Please send your list by e-mail

10) Every person can send only one e-mail.

11) The deadline is 31 December 2011. The list will be posted at the beginning of January 2012.

You can pick your list from the following albums and EPs. I have added some albums and EPs/demos that were not listed on the original post.

BTW, The Stanfields album was released last year. It was no. 21 on the final 2010 list. The Lagan "Work Away" is on the guideline list from the very beginning, just check the EP list.

REMEMBER THAT YOU CAN INCLUDE ANY OTHER CELTIC PUNK, CELTIC ROCK OR FOLK PUNK ALBUM THAT HAS BEEN RELEASED IN 2011 EVEN IF IT IS NOT LISTED BELOW. THOSE LISTS ARE ONLY FOR YOUR HELP, THEY ARE NOT A CUT.

Please send your list of the best recordings of 2011 to the following e-mail:

celticfolkpunk@yahoo.es
