2017-01-28 ALBUM REVIEW - THE MAHONES "25 Years of Irish Punk-The Very Best" (2016)

The Mahones "The Very Best - 25 Years of Irish Punk" Whiskey Devils Records WDR-CD5980 /Wolverine Records WRR 222
Release date: Augsut 26, 2016
Running time: 1h14min20sec,21 tracks

After 25 years on the road, The Mahones decided to release a definitive best of album to celebrate their anniversary. The Mahones had previously issued a couple of greatest hits compilations, “The Best of The Mahones” (2003, 17 tracks) and “Irish Punk Collection” (2007, 17 tracks). As four new studio albums have been delivered by The Mahones since 2007, quite a few amazing songs have been added to the band’s repertoire. Therefore, Finny and Katie thought that they should offer to their fans an ultimate collection. Not only would make the new album the songs recorded after “Irish Punk Collection”, but their earlier well-known songs would be given a new lease of life. Then, they re-recorded 16 songs to sound exactly like they are regularly performed live and those songs were put together with some original versions from “The Hunger & The Fight” albums. As there’s an unwritten rule that says that a best of album must include a previously unreleased song, “new” member Scruffy recorded a pipes intro.

So, “The Very Best – 25 Years of Irish Punk” consists of 9 old songs that can be found on the previous best of albums, a new unreleased song (“Scruffy’s Intro”), 1 song from “Live in Italy” (“Wild Rover”), 9 songs from their last 4 albums and a studio version of “Teenage Kicks”. No songs from “The Hellfire Club Sessions” and “Take no Prisoners” can be found on this new album.

The final result kicks ass. All the songs have been given the current Mahones treatment, with a live atmosphere and great tin whistle and/or fiddle arrangements. IMHO, the album is spotless till track 17, “The Hunger & The Fight” included. Regarding the last 4 tracks, I would have chosen other self-penned songs (some interesting numbers from “Angel & Devils” and “The Hunger & The Fight Part I” were unfortunately left behind) instead of the covers. Anyway, I understand that Finny and Katie wanted to showcase the punk edge of the band too.

Remember that The Mahones will be touring Europe from mid-February to mid-March 2017 with The Whiskey of the Damned member Gina Romantini on fiddle and with SIR REG as support on some gigs.

REVIEW - THE MAHONES The Hunger & The Fight Part 2" (2015)

The Mahones "The Hunger & The Fight (Part Two)" Wolverine Records WRR215
Release date: October 16th, 2015
Running time: 40:58, 12 tracks

The voyage is over. If “The Hunger & The Fight (Part One)" was said to be focused on The Mahones folk side and on Dublin city, “The Hunger & The Fight (Part Two)” is said to be focused on the band’s punk side and on New York City.

What can be heard on this final concept album installment? Amazing songs (“Turn This Town”, a number coming back to the “Here Comes Lucky” era), the usual anthems (“Riot Tonight”, featuring Strawberry Blondes singer Mickie Stabbs on guest vocals, “Irish Brigade” and the gimmicky “Punk Rock Saved my Life”), early U2 inspired stuff (“Skeleton Sea”), Velvet Underground/Lou Reed infused material (“JFK”) and simple but effective numbers (the hardcore song “F*** You”). “Réamhrá”, the link to the previous album, is a short but  interesting uileann pipes intro.  And “The Parting Glass” is probably the best standard cover that The Mahones have ever recorded (maybe because they have followed a different approach).

On the other side, there are a few album fillers. The mash-up “Hunger & The Fight Ouverture” was not really needed.  The “Alternative Ulster” cover is too faithful to the original. And I do understand that The Mahones wanted to dedicate a track to Cuzo, but “Dancing in the Moonlight” as a bonus track after “The Parting Glass” doesn’t work at all.

The Hunger & The Fight (Part Two)” CD is delivered in a 4 panel digipack. The liner notes provide all the info (band’s line-up, guests, studio credits, song credits, thank yous and the dedication to the late Paul “Cuzo” Mancuso). Unfortunately, there are no lyrics to the songs. All the fans that have funded the album will find their names on one of the panels (among them, some Celtic punk active fans on Facebook like Barry Burke, David Engelman, Timmy Mihalko or Rafael Ponchio, together with former Irish Moutarde piper Christian Haerinck).

Part Two” has been produced again by Finny and Dave Baksh. This time, the album has not been mixed and mastered by Gene Hugues; Paddy MCallion and Josh Gwilliam have mixed the album in Calgary and Rene de la Muerte (“Angel & Devils” co-producer) has mastered it in Montreal. The guests list is shorter than usual. Apart from Mickie Stabbs, Mark Gilligan plays sax on “Dancing in the Moonlight” and Paddy McCallion guitar on “Dancing in the Moonlight” and “Alternative Ulster”. By the way, track order is different on the iTunes digital version, since “Irish Brigade (Fighting 69th)” is track no. 3 and “Skeleton Sea” track no. 4, while on the European CD version “Skeleton Sea” runs before “Irish Brigade (Fighting 69th)

Anyway, Finny, Katie and Dom must be happy. Whatever they do, their fans and fellow reviewers will love it.

Tracklist:

01 - Réamhrá 0:25
02 - Punk Rock Saved My Life 4:06
03 - Skeleton Sea 4:44
04 - Irish Brigade (The Fighting 69th) 3:34
05 - Turn This Town (New York City) 4:27
06 - JFK 3:42
07 - Hunger & the Fight Overture 5:21
08 - Riot Tonight 3:56
09 - F*** You 1:55
10 - Alternative Ulster 2:55
11 - The Parting Glass 2:12
12 - BONUS TRACK: Dancing in the Moonlight 3:42

ROIO - THE MAHONES Live at the Shamrock-n-Roll Festival, Providence, RI (2011)

This show was taped in Providence in 2011 when The Mahones were playing with Dropkick Murphys, Street Dogs and Stiff Little Fingers.

It's a short show that was shared yesterday by Finny on The Mahones Facebook group.

The tracklist is incomplete on Archive org and I've tried to fill the gaps. Track no. 4 is apparently a tin whistle intro to the following number, that sounds like an instrumental version of "Star of the County Down"

Enjoy!

REVIEW - THE MAHONES "The Hunger & The Fight Part 1" (2014)

The Mahones "The Hunger & The Fight Part 1" Whiskey Devil Records/Wolverine Records
Release date: 7 October 2014
Running time: 49:33, 12 tracks

I guess that most of you have already bought a hard copy or downloaded a digital copy of The Mahones 8th studio album “The Hunger & The Fight Part 1”. The album was officially released last October 7th on iTunes and Amazon and the CD copies were available last October 14th (East Grand Records, USA) and last October 31st (Wolverine Records, Europe and ROW). But long before those official dates,  reviews of The Mahones first chapter of their double concept album were posted on a lot of Celtic punk or punk e-zines. The vast majority of these reviews  have listed the album as a 5 stars, 10/10 or the best album in their career. Given that all of you have already read those reviews, I feel that I should play the devil’s advocate role and write about the lights on the album, but also about its shadows. Some people will feel that this is a sacrilege.

I have given quite a few spins to “The Hunger & The Fight Part 1” and my concern was if I could find a different approach to write about it.  On the press release it was stated “The Mahones are thrilled to present the first part of their epic double album, The Hunger & The Fight. A concept double album,  (…) Part One is in keeping with Irish folk acoustic style (with a little punk thrown in for good measure), with songs based around Ireland, and more specifically, the city of Dublin. Part Two will be more of an electric Irish Punk album, with songs based on the United States, and mainly New York City. The Hunger & The Fight narrates the struggle and perseverance of the Irish people, and the evolution of Irish music from Irish Folk to Irish Punk. “ But when I take into account that “The Hunger& The Fight Part 1 ” is a concept album, I can’t avoid thinking that the last two tracks break the continuity of the concept album. OK, they are bonus tracks and then they are value for your money. But I feel that they don’t fit in the concept. So I’ll focus mainly on the other 10 tracks.

The Mahones have been a prolific band in the last 5 years. They have got the recognition that they deserved and all of us (me too) think that Finny is a brilliant songwriter. But, apart from being a kick-ass songwriter, Finny is a sort of magician, a sort of architect that is able to put together different things and make them fit almost perfect. Listening to “The Hunger & The Fight Part 1”, I felt that The Mahones have gone mellower. But after some plays, it was clear that elements from the different albums from The Mahones discography where present all along the album. One of the best features of their previous work “Angels & Devils” was the addition of a couple of instrumentals. Fortunately Finny has decided to open the new album with another one, “Brian Boru’s March”. “Prisoner 1082” is a number on which The Clash influences can be heard. “Someone Saved Me”, a song that I have particularly loved, has that mandolin sound of their early albums. “Blood on the Streets Of Dublin” would have that “Rise Again” album twist too. And, obviously, there are a couple of raucous Celtic punk anthems
to sing-a-long, jump, dance or punch the walls, “A Pint of Plain (A Drop of the Pure)” and "St. Patrick’s Day Irish Punk Song". The real “new” thing on this album would be track no. 2, the amazing “The Hunger & The Fight” featuring Tara Slone. Normally I don’t find Finny duets the best songs on The Mahones albums. But this time I must admit that it’s the highlight on the album.

OK, those were the lights. From now on, let’s focus on the shadows. Guests Miranda Mulholland (fiddle), Dave Gossage (Irish flute) and Jonathan Moorman (fiddle) have guested on previous Mahones albums. In fact, I pointed out on my “Angels & Devils” review that Finny should think over adding a fiddler and a flutist/tin whistle player on a permanent basis. Those musicians create an atmosphere on their songs that unfortunately cannot be found on the live gigs. At least I miss them. The official line-up on the album lists Micheal O’Grady as tin whistle player. I hope that he’ll be playing on the European tour as he did some years ago. This would be  a great news. Some of you will respond that I should talk about the studio album, not about the live gigs. However, I feel that they are related issues.

Finny is a master of the studio and this time he has produced the album himself together with Dave Baksh (Sum 41) and the mix and master have been made by his fellow Gene Hughes again. There is a sort of dichotomy between the mellower songs and the upbeat numbers. The solution to balance them is a little bit weird: the rocking numbers have got a live treatment. There are a lot of shouts (hey hey!) and a song like “St. Patrick’s Day Irish Punk” is extremely long. This track length would be OK when you are in the mosh pit, but I find a little bit long for a studio take.

Finally, The Mahones make a recurrent error: they keep on recording the Irish standards that The Pogues and many other bands have already covered. I feel that Tonny Duggins does a great job on “Paddy on The Railway” but does the scene really need that one of its heavyweights covers those over-exposed standards? The balance of twelve tracks and only seven original songs is a little bit poor. IMHO, a couple of self-penned songs would have improved the album.

It’s obvious that The Mahones have invested a lot of energy and passion on “The Hunger & The Fight Part 1”. The stakes were high, but I get a slight feeling of déjà vu. Anyway, it’s a very good album that will please The Mahones diehard fan base and the followers that have jumped in in the last years. In other words, it’s not the best Celtic punk album of 2014, but definitely a Top 10 album of the year.

Tracklist:

01 - Brian Boru's March 3:37
02 - The Hunger & The Fight (feat. Tara Slone) 4:40
03 - Paddy on the Railway (feat. Tony Duggins) 2:59

08 - The Auld Triangle 3:54
09 - Blood on the Streets of Dublin 4:03
10 - St. Patrick's Day Irish Punk Song 6:12

VIDEO - THE MAHONES "Angel without Wings/Merry Christmas Baby"

The Mahones' Christmas song featuring very special guest Felicity Hamer (Filly and the Flops/United Steelworkers of Montreal) on vocals.

Finny McConnell, singer of The Mahones, wrote this song about his wife, Katie Kaboom (coincidentally also of The Mahones). A love song, the video is made up of a bunch of McConnell home Christmas movies. Enjoy, barf, drink more whiskey, whatever.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday season, from our families to yours.

THE MAHONES FUNDRAISER

Having just announced the launch of their own record label this past Friday, The Mahones have launched a fundraising campaign to help cover the recording costs of their forthcoming album, The Hunger & The Fight. The fundraiser is online at www.themahones.co, and a note from the band is below:

The Mahones are heading back into the studio in 2014 to record our forthcoming double album, The Hunger & The Fight. We'll be putting this album out on our very own label, Whiskey Devil Records, because we know that doing things ourselves (DIY) is the best way to get as much music as we can to our friends and fans.

You, our beloved fans, have proven time and again that you're the very best, and we're asking for your help and support with this new project. In order to cover the huge costs of recording a double album, we're holding a fundraiser in exchange for some awesome thank you gifts and rare opportunities. THE FUNDRAISER PAGE WILL BE UP WITHIN THE HOUR! Please have a look, buy/donate what you can (in exchange for something fun!), and help us make Irish punk history!

Thanks, and all our love,
The Mahones

REVIEW - THE MAHONES "Angels & Devils" SECOND OPINION

The Mahones "Angels & Devils"
Release Date: November 13, 2012
Running Time:46:24 12 tracks + 1 bonus track

Well what can one say, old Spider Mahone was lucky enough to be sent a copy of The Mahones new release "Angels and Devils" to have a wee listen to, and after a long night at work listening to the latest offering from Canada's finest, decided to put pen to paper.

After the excellent album "The Black Irish" released in 2011, I really did not think that Finny and Co could get any better, but I have to say I was wrong, from the opening bars of "Shakespeare Road" to the closing bars of "Tin Soldiers" this album grabs you by the throat and leads you on a musical journey thru events that have shaped this bands history.

From songs about living in London drinking whisky in squats to nights out in Hamburg on a rare night off from touring, ( Something that I have had the honour and fun of sharing in ) this album is about life and the joys of it,

One thing I particulary like about the album is the use of fiddle on certain tracks, the highlight for me being "Whiskey Train" which has a real Levellers feel to it and am sure is going to be a crowd pleaser for many a year to come as it is up there with such classics as "Paint the Town Red", "Drunken Lazy Bastard" and "Queen of Tequila".

This album has something to please everyone, the cover of "Tin Soldiers" I have to admit sounds better than the original in my humble opinion, while "Medley in E Minor" had me wishing I was at a gig hearing it live and leaping about with a large Jamesons in my hand. The track "Angel Without Wings / Merry Christmas Baby" is a modern day "Fairytale of New York" and highlights Finny's unique style of song writing to the full.

All that is left for me to say is best grab yourself a copy of this excellent release as it is a must have for all Paddy Punk rock fans and I for one can't wait to hear these new songs played live.

Hell feckin Yeah
