2018-05-10 ALBUM REVIEW - KRAKIN' KELLYS "Promised Land" (2018)

Krakin' Kellys "Promised Land"
Release date: March 17, 2018
Running time: 47:27, 14 tracks

Belgium, placed at the heart of Europe, is well-known because of its beers and its BDs (comic books) artists. Normally tourists prefer to visit Flanders (Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp) rather than the French speaking area (Wallonia). Even if the biggest cities Charleroi and Liège are not as interesting as the biggest Flemish cities, there are a couple of Walloon towns that are worth visiting: Namur and Mons.

Krakin’ Kellys hail from Namur and after having released several badass videos, they have finally released their long awaited debut album. Matthieu Hendrick (electric guitar), Pierre-Yves Berhin aka HAMO (button accordion), David Leroy (lead vocals), Oliver Drèze (drums), Stephane Mossiat (bass) and Rémi Decker (pipes and whistles) play Celtic skate punk. They blend traditional Irish Rock’nRoll with American punk music. Yes, they are not the first band to do it, since the likes of The Real McKenzies, Pipes and Pints, Drink Hunters or Irish Moutarde have previously followed a similar path. However, Krakin’ Kellys offer something different. And they add something new to the Celtic punk scene.

Promised Land” consists of 14 tracks that are delivered in 48 minutes. Videos for the title track “Promised Land” and for “One Way” were shot in 2017 and obviusly those cuts are some of the highlights. At the beginning of 2018 the video for the amazing “Anarchy in the Double K” was unveiled and Krakin’ Kellys showcased their folkier end.

Together with those songs, there is a bunch of standout numbers such as the streetpunk song “United” (gang vocals and brilliant pipes and accordion tune), the excellent “When I Die”, with a great balance between guitars and the diatonic accordion (BTW, the accordion reminds me of Asturian folk band Tejedor), “Hey Bro” (an upbeat number with a Bastards On Parade approach) and “Giving Up” (a Rancid touch for a festive punk song).

Besides, Krakin’ Kellys master both ends, the traditional and the punk one, on “Come and Get Some” (accordion folk meets RATM) and “Our Pride” (R’n’R, hip hop and a pipes and accordion duel with an Ar Re Yaouank feel).

Ah, if you have enjoyed the cover for “Promised Land” you should know that it has been drawn by accordionist Pierre-Yves, who is also a comic book artist under the name HAMO.

If you are planning to visit Wallonia, these are the three events that you shouldn’t miss: 1) le carnaval de Binche, 2) Les 24 heures vélo de Louvain-la-Neuve, and 3) A Krakin Kellys gig. So grab a Jupiler, or better a Leffe Radieuse, and party with Krakin Kellys.

2017-04-01 ALBUM REVIEW - NEVERMIND NESSIE "Best of Foes" (2017)

Nevermind Nessie "Best of Foes"
Release date: March 10, 2017
Running time: 39:10, 12 tracks

Flemish band Nevermind Nessie is back with their sophomore album, “Best of Foes”. The five piece band have issued a 12 track CD which comes in a digipack with an 8 page booklet. The line-up is basically that of their debut album “Story of a Lost Generation”: Hendrik (lead vocals, guitar), Tijl (bass, backing vocals), Vincent (accordion, tin whistle) and Sam (drums). The new member is Charlotte (fiddle) instead of Pavel.

Best of Foes” opens with “Intro”, where traditional instruments bagpipes, fiddle and accordion are joined by the electrical ones. The tune has a medieval twist and is stuck to the next track, the sing-along “Drink Up”: “Nessie is here, drink up! Drink up! / Nessie is here, to drink up all your beer!” Guest Jacob Donkersloot plays bagpipes on both numbers.

Last Breath” is a number written by guest mandolinist Folkert Van Kerckhove. Kick-ass fiddling together with woah chorus.

The next cut is a pirate song titled “So Drunk”. Vicent plays accordion.

There is a video for track no. 4 here. “Best of Foes” was written by bassist Tijl and it’s a fecking brilliant number with a Flogging Molly twist. The lyrics tell the tale of a complicated relationship between a boy and a girl. The likes of The Pogues (“Fairy Tale of New York”) and Dropkick Murphys (“Dirty Glass”) wrote kick-ass songs about this subject, featuring guest female vocals. However, Nevermind Nessie have taken a different approach. Their friends tell the story, so there’s no girl vocals. Probably one of the catchiest songs of 2017.

After the single, Nevermind Nessie deliver a rocking number based on “The Road to Lisdoonvarna” tune. Vincent shifts from accordion to tin whistle. BTW, the song ends up with fast-paced tin whistle and fiddle.

Beer Dance” is another standout track on “Best of Foes”. The song has been built up around the traditional tune “The Bear Dance”. “The Bear Dance” is quite popular among Asturian bands. Apparently, a Cornish band played that tune at an Asturian festival a long time ago. Some local bands loved it and plenty of renditions of “Danza l’osu” were played/recorded. So, people in Spain tend to think that it’s an Asturian traditional tune. But the tune is from Flemish origin and it’s titled “Berendans”. Nevermind Nessie open with some reggae sounding electric guitar and fiddle. Fiddle and tin whistle are played on the main theme, perfectly backed by hey shouts. Guest Jakob Donkersloot plays bagpipes too on this song. If you’re interested in that tune, further info can be found here (in Spanish) and here (in English).

Tracks no. 8, “Walk like a Pigeon” features “The Pigeon at the Gate” and “The Gravel Walk” reels. Nevermind Nessie do a great job once again using traditional stuff.

More highlights: the lively song “Empty Promise”. Amazing accordion by Vincent and great fiddle arrangements too.

The following song keeps up the quality of the previous track. “Monday Mornings” has everything to please the fans. Vincent plays accordion at the beginning and tin whistle at the end, and Charlotte masters the fiddle all around the song. This time the traditional tune that is played is the “The Kesh” jig.

As you have already noticed, Nevermind Nessie like to play with traditional tunes and their song titles. “The Finish” is based on the “Finnish Polka” aka “Ievan Polkka”. The final result is a badass number.

Finally, Nevermind Nessie offer a new Italian number, "Il Viaggio di Saltarello”. If they chose “Tarantella” on “Story of a Lost Generation”, now they’ve picked up and Italian tune “Saltarello” and Fiorenzo Carpi’s “Viaggio in groppa al tonno”.

Nevermind Nessie have some similarities with Uncle Bard and The Dirty Bastards. Their sound is different, but both bands use traditional tunes on their songs. Moreover, the packaging of their albums is spotless and full of details. As it has previously said, “Best of Foes” comes in a 6 panel digipack together with an 8 page booklet with all the lyrics and song credits. The studio credits are stated on the digipack. Hats-off!

I do love Nevermind Nessie. They have a young and fresh approach and they take risks when they cover material from non-Celtic countries. But, above all, their sound and production is excellent. They love the traditional stuff, but they don’t cover the usual pub standards. In fact, they are writing new pub standards

02 - Drink Up 1:20
03 - Last Breath 3:22

REVIEW - THE MUDDY STATES "Urban Legends" (2015)

The Muddy States "Urban Legends" Self-released
Release date: March 2015
Running time: 18:02, 5 tracks

The Lucky Trolls (thank you guys) passed our details to The Muddy States and they contacted us. They sent their "Urban Legends" EP and we have really enjoyed it. So, we have decided that The Muddy States, from the Liège province in Belgium, are our Band of August 2015.

The Muddy States were born in November 2013 from the ashes of a band playing Irish sessions. Johnny (guitar), Mary (fiddle) and Davey (bass) were the original members but it was not until May 2014 when Simon (drums) joined that they were really a full band.

In March 2015 they released their first EP "Urban Legends" five self-penned songs showcasing their love for country, Celtic, americana, blues and soul music.

The EP kicks off with "When I Was in Jail", an amazing number in The Wages of Sin vein.

The next number is called "Dead Corpse Lying". It goes slowly, but from time to time they speed up the tempo.

Track number three is a r'n'r number titled "Cocaine" where the rhythm section shines.

"Muddy State" is a briliant pop number with some Celtic influences. It has a pizzicato intro and vocals are shared by boy and girl. When one thinks that the song is over at 1:54, the music comes again.

Finally, "A Drinking Song" is pub music at its best, a Dexy's Midnight Runners sounding number.

"Urban legends" has been produced by Georges Noisy Pride. The EP comes in a gatefold sleeve. The pictures have been taken from Lou & Tofke and the design has been made by Lolo.

Fans loving pub music and the likes of Johnny Cash and Steve Earle, grab a copy of this fantastic EP.

REVIEW - NEVERMIND NESSIE "Story of a Lost Generation" (2015)

Nevermind Nessie "Story of a Lost Generation" Self-released
Release date: 6 March 2014
Running time: 45:01, 13 tracks

Belgium. Beers, lots of beers. Moules frites. Vlaamse patat. Chocolates from Leonidas. I could follow, but those are sterotypes. Now, let’s focus on Celtic punk. Black Tartan Clan, of course. And Nevermind Nessie. Don't forget Nevermind Nessie.

Nevermind Nessie were our Band of the Month in October 2012  and their 4 track EP was reviewed here. The EP got a rave review, thanks to their fresh sound and the band’s approach. Instead of cover the usual ballads, Nevermind Nessie wrote their own songs featuring traditional tunes.

Three years later, Nevermind Nessie have delivered their long-awaited debut album. The core of the band remains the same (Hendrik on vocals and electric guitar, Vince on button accordion and tin whistle and Sam on drums), but some line-up changes have taken place (Pavel on fiddle instead of Irena and Tijl on bass instead of Reinoud).
The kids from Lokeren have grown up and their new work is better than expected. The album is titled “Story of a Lost Generation”:  Celtic punk at its best, but also some Flemish, Dutch, Breton and Italian drops are added to the mix.

The opener is called “Party in Sin City” and it’s a kick-ass song with great chorus to sing-along. The guitar work, rhythm section and fiddling are perfect. “Off with Your Head” is a festive number featuring fiddle and accordion with a chrous à la The Pokes. The following track is dedicated to St. Patrick’s Day, "Best Day of the Year". The traditional tune is “The Ten Penny Bit” and Pavel and Vincent do a great job on fiddle and tin whistle. This number will become a classic St.Patrick’s Day song soon.

Will You Come to Dance” it’s a song about weekends at an Irish pub. Nevermind Nessie have taken the music of “Cam Ye O’er Frae France” and bassist Tijl have written the lyrics to this addictive track. "Liberty" is a self-penned number featuring the tune “Burren Shores” written by Vincent. It has a catchy chorus similar to the Levellers old songs and class performances by Vincent and Pavel again on tin whistle and fiddle. That song is followed by “Raise the Flag”, the sailors’ song on the album. The tune has been written by Vincent and the lyrics by Hendrik (the main lyricist of the band).

The next number is the title track to Nervermind Nessie debut album, “Story of a Lost Generation”. This time the lads deliver a social complaint about the economic crisis that seems to have no end. They have added the “Swallowtail Jig” and the song has got a reggae treatment similar to the last Blood or Whiskey album. Track no. 8 features different reels: “The Merry Blacksmith”, “A Cup of Tea” and Vincent’s Reel. The lyrics have been written by Hendrik and Vincent and obviously it’s not the traditional song that both Planxty and Steeleye Span recorded. “Billy Ryan” is a traditional set of polkas, “Ryan’s Polka” and “Bill Sullivan’s Polka”. The former has been covered by a lot of bands, but Nevermind Nessie rendition is brilliant. The latter is the perfect choice, as normally “Ryan’s Polka” is played together with “Ballydesmond” or “Murphy’s Polka”. If you don’t know which tune  “Bill Sullivan’s Polka" is, just listen to OysterbandDon’t Slit you Wrists for Me”, since it’s the polka that is featured on that song.

Hendrik has put lyrics in English to a traditional Flemish song titled “Jan Mijne Man” on “I Know a Man”. They have also adde a breton “An dro” to the song. Hendrik has also written the lyrics to “Night of the Falling Stars”, a fast-paced celtic punk number featuring “The Blarney Pilgrim”. “Luiaards met Baarden” is a medley of two Flemish/Dutch songs, “Het Luiaardsgild” and “Al Die Willen Te Kaap’ren Varen”. To finish up, Nevermind Nessie play an Italian tune, “Tarantella” and obviously accordion (Vincent) and mandolin (guest Folkert Van Kerkhove) are played.

The album has been recorded by Hendrik and the final result is amazing. “Story of a Lost Generation” is packed in a six panel digipack enclosing an eight page booklet. Every single piece of information is provided: band’s links, credits and guest, lyrics, the titles of all of the tunes that are played and full band and single members ‘pics. I strongly recommend to buy the CD instead of the digital version of the album.

Story of a Lost Generation” is a top-notch album that you should add to your collection. The five guys from East Flanders have been able to improve all the attractive things from their previous EP and they deserve a bigger exposure. Nevermind Nessie, together with the Italian band The Clan, have probably offered something fresh and new to the scene. Both of them are young, but they are excellent musicians that are able to write infectious numbers. If you are working for a Celtic festival in Central Europe, maybe you should think over hiring these guys for your bill.

REVIEW - THE BLACK TARTAN CLAN "Scotland in Our Hearts" (2014)

The Black Tartan Clan "Scotland in Our Hearts"
Release date: 30 April 2014
Running time: 38:16, 12 tracks

Scotland in our Hearts” is the latest Black Tartan Clan album. This bunch of Belgians have become alchemists and every CD they've previously released has  turned into gold straight away. And “Scotland in our Hearts” is no exception.

The six piece band found the perfect line-up when they release their “Standing Strong” EP and they have not failed since then. The pipes and the banjo are perfectly mixed with the electric guitar, rhythm section and Mac Touche lead vocals. As far as the lyrics are concerned, the songs are about Scotland, booze and friendship, but new topics are dealt: Bill Millin, the piper during the D-Day landing in Normandy, Scottish food, working in a factory, a musician’s life... Some buddies have also written some lyrics for them (“Piper Bill”, “We Are the Clan” and “Maggots in my Haggis”. By the way,  there is a number sung in French too, “We Are the Clan. The Clan is really standing strong and growing.

Regarding the original stuff, “Piper Bill” is a fantastic number. BTC know that a brilliant album needs the perfect 1st song, and “Piper Bill” is BTC at its best: pipes, banjo and street punk chorus. “Scotland in Our Heart” follows the same path, with a powerful chorus too. “Belgian and Drunk” will soon become a classic that every ULB, UCL and KUL student will proudly sing. And “Maggots in my Haggis” is THE SINGLE from “Scotland in Our Hearts”. But BTC also moves to different territories. There are two slower numbers that I really love, the booze song “Until I’m Drunk Enough” and the top-notch closing number “The Artist”, featuring a brass band at the end. Together with those songs, “The Factory”, with its second vocals,  is amazing too.

Obviously, there are some traditional Scottish songs. The numbers that have got the BTC treatment on “Scotland in Our Hearts” are the well-known songs “Ye Jacobites” and “Go Lassie Go” (“Wild Mountain Thyme”) together with the tune “(Hector) The Hero”. I enjoy BTC covers of traditional Scottish songs, but I prefer when they cover Scottish tunes, so I’ll pick “The Hero”. Please guys, some Gordon Duncan's tunes on the next album!!!

The album packaging is a jewel case with a 16 page booklet. The cover drawing has been made by Jordi Sansa Linares (Pa de Ral drummer). BTC loved Pa de Ral Triforce” cover and they contacted Jordi, who got some guidelines to draw the cover. After some sketches and some feedback, he was able to deliver what the guys were looking for.

Black Tartan Clan are the King Midas of Celtic punk. They have the ability to turn into gold everything they touch. I feel that they have already achieved their goals and therefore new goals would be highly appreciated. Maybe working with producer Phil Cunningham on the next album? I'd love it.
