2017-12-02 ALBUM REVIEW AND NAME YOUR PRICE DOWNLOAD - CASSIDY'S BREWERY "One Brew over the Cuckoo's Nest" (2017)

Cassidy's Brewery "One Brew over the Cuckoo's Nest"
Release date: November 18, 2017
Running time: 32:21, 10 tracks

The Serbian Celtic punk / rock scene is alive and kicking. Well-known bands have released their CDs in 2017 (Orthodox Celts, Irish Stew of Sindidun), but also a new band has delivered their debut album: Casssidy’s Brewery. Hailing from Belgrade, Cassidy’s Brewery are a beer-soaked Celtic punk band. They were established in 2008, but their current line-up dates from 2016. They are Uroš Marjanovic aka “Dain” (lead vocals, tin whistle, accordion), Nikola Zecevic  aka “Zec” (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Nemanja Jovanovic aka “Neca” (lead guitar, backing vocals), Damjan Dakic (fiddle), Stanko Zecevic aka “Pirke” (bass), and Nikola Milojkovic  aka “Japanac” (drums, lead and backing vocals).

Their debut album is titled “One Brew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. The title is based on the Ken Kesey’s book “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. A movie was shot in 1975 and Jack Nicholson got his first Academy award. Then, I daresay that Cassidy’s Brewery are taken a Jack Nicholson approach.

The final result is quite good. The five originals are top-notch and the 5 covers get the Cassidy’s Brewery treatment. Unfortunately, most of them are overexposed standards. The set of tunes “Loboscouse” is my fave. The lads have chosen “The Fermoy Lasses” (Irish Stew of Sindidun added recently this reel to one of his songs too) and “The Musical Priest”. “Raggle Taggle Gypsy” and “Ye Jacobites by Name” have been arranged in the right way while “Rolling Down to Old Maoui” sounds similar to The Dreadnoughts rendition.

The self-penned songs are the proof that Cassidy’s Brewery’s future is bright. The opening numbers “Sail Away” and “Old Man’s Bones” have a Celtic punk sound that can rival with the best German bands, thanks to the fiddle and the accordion. “Heroes” was the first track that we ever heard by Cassidy’s Brewery. They released a video clip for this excellent track some months ago. Finally, “Punkchevo” and “Mariner” are a couple of punk goes metal songs.

One Brew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” is available at Bandcamp as a Name Your Price download, and the lyrics to all of the songs can be found there too.

2017-11-27 ALBUM REVIEW - IRISH STEW OF SINDIDUN "City of Grigs" (2017)

Irish Stew of Sindidun "City of Grigs" Ammonite Records CD051
Release date: October 16, 2017
Running Time: 35:14, 10 tracks

Irish Stew of Sindidun have recently released “City of Grigs”, their fourth studio album and follow-up to their CD from 2011 “New Tomorrow”. Ana Milanovic left the band and the current fiddler is Nemanja Jovanovic. Apart from this line-up change, Irish Stew of Sindidun have released their new album with a new label, Ammonite Records.

City Of Grigs” comes in a jewel case with a 16 page booklet. Ten songs have made the album, which is an interesting Celtic pop-rock work. There are seven original numbers and three covers. Regarding  the original songs, five have been written by the band leader Bojan Petrovic, one by Bojan and fiddler Nemanja and another one by Dejan Grujic. The production is excellent and the sound is based on fiddle banjo and tin whistle.

Bojan’s songs are the tracks no. 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8. “Stranger” is a fantastic opener that sets the pace for the rest of the album. “Heavier than Sin” was the first single from the album. A video clip was released for this song that features “The Fermoy Lasses” reel at the end, a tune that The Dubliners used to play together with “Sporting Paddy”. “Awake” has a livelier beginning and the banjo-fiddle-whistle tune is spotless too. “Holiday” has a Christy Moore spin. And “Emerald Blue” is a kick-ass Celtic pop-rock number.

The Old City Keeper” is the only instrumental on “City of Grigs”, but I’s one of the highlights on the album. It has a funky touch that reminds me of Canadian band Mad Pudding. Hats off!

Drink and Sing” is probably the most upbeat cut on the CD. This number was written by the Orthodox Celts bassist Dejan Grujic. As you probably know, Bojan joined the Orthodox Celts around 2011 and played the whistles till 2016.

Finally, Irish Stew of Sindidun deliver 3 covers too. My fave is Peadar Kearney’s song “Down by the Glenside”. Many bands insist on covering the same The Dubliners / The Clancy Brothers songs. However, Irish Stew of Sindidun have proved that there are other gems that should be re-arranged.  “Paddy’s Lamentation” is another good choice and, IMHO, “Step it out Mary” is maybe the softer cover of the three.

City of Grigs” shows a different side of Irish Stew of Sindidun. The band’s sound is easily recognizable, but they have pushed it to a calm direction. They have taken The Corrs folkier moments and added some drops of Capercaillie and Four Men and a Dog to the mix. The final result is an amazing Celtic pop-rock album.

Track listing:

01. Stranger 2:47
02. Paddy's Lamentation 3:23
03. Heavier Than Sin 4:05
04. Awake 3:28
05. Drink And Sing 1:59
06. Holiday 4:07
07. The Old City Keeper 2:50
08. Emerald Blue 3:44
09. Down By The Glenside 3:59
10. Step It Out Mary 4:27

2017-06-19 ALBUM REVIEW - THE ORTHODOX CELTS "Many Mouths Shut!" (2017)

Orthodox Celts "Many Mouths Shut" O'Celts Records OC01
Release date: January 13, 2017
Running time: 29:31, 13 tracks

Celtic rock in the former Yugoslavia has a long history. Orthodox Celts (Serbia) and Belfast Food (Croatia) became quite popular among diehard Celtic punk/rock fans at the beginning of the XXIst century. Before the MySpace heyday, the albums by these bands were available outside their area thanks to P2P software and torrent sites.

Orthodox Celts were formed in 1992 and their debut album was issued in 1994. The first CD that I heard from the band was their sophomore album “The Celts Strike Again”. That CD was released in 1997 and featured a couple of original numbers. More albums followed: “Green Roses” (1999) featured 8 original songs; “A Moment like the Longest Day” (2002) was based on their own stuff, as there was only 1 cover on the album that opened the path to a more rock oriented sound; and “One, Two .. Five!” (2007) was an excellent CD that included a “The Fields of Athenry” rendition and a Thin Lizzy’s cover, “Sarah”.

The band has been active for the last 10 years, but no new album was released during that period. In the meanwhile, fiddler Ana Dokic left the band in 2009 and Nikola Stenojavic joined in. Bojan Petrovic, member of Irish Stew of Sindidun, replaced Dejan Popin in 2010 and recorded the whistles on “Many Mouths Shout” before leaving Orthodox Celts in June 2016.

A couple of singles were advanced in March 2014, “Save Me”, and March 2015, “One / Milk Honey”. However, “Many Mouths Shut” was released in January 2017 on the band’s own label O’Celts Records. Taking into account the band’s evolution, the fans would expect an album full of originals. Nevertheless, Orthodox Celts have taken another direction and “Many Mouths Shut” consists of 7 self-penned songs and 6 covers. Curiously, they’ve taken an approach similar to that of traditional bands: song, tunes, song, tunes. Even if most of the tunes have a traditional sound more than a Celtic-rock sound, they are played alone. That is, there are not set of tunes, but only short tunes.

My fave original songs are “I Wish You the Very Worst” (a number with a strong bass and a traditional tune), “One/Milk Honey” (a lively song with an amazing tin whistle, fiddle and percussion end) and “King of the Hill” (an upbeat song showcasing fiddle).

The other self-penned tracks are also very good. “Double Cross” is an interesting Celtic pop-rock number featuring fiddle and tin whistle. “Lone Wolf” and “Save Me” blend Irish music with American sounds. And “Revolution” has a tight rhythm section and a nice fiddle backing.

The Parting Glass” is the only cover that is not a tune. I prefer The Dubliners version to the Clancy Brothers rendition. Orthodox Celts have given a fast-paced Celtic rock treatment to the song that I have really enjoyed.

Regarding the tunes, “The Banshee” (aka “McMahon’s”) is the best tune on the CD. It opens with fiddle and tin whistle, but then the full band joins. “Flowers of Red Hill” gets a Lúnasa treatment where tin whistle and percussion shine. IMHO, the remaining tracks are not as interesting from a Celtic rock album point of view. “Banish Misfortune” is given a basic or stripped treatment and features only mandola and acoustic guitar. “Morrison’s Jig” is a fiddle led tune played a little bit slowly. Bodhrán, accordion and banjo can be heard on the “Kesh Jig”. The musicianship is good on both jigs, but they don’t add anything new to these over-exposed standards.

Orthodox Celts’ sixth album comes in a 4 panel digipack. The artwork has been made by Italian comic book artist Walter Venturi. Every member of the band has been depicted by Walter on the artwork. Although there is no lyric booklet, all of the lyrics to the songs are available at the band’s website. “Many Mouths Shut” has been produced, mixed and mastered by Dejan Lalic (mandolin, octave mandola, tenor banjo, electric guitar and bck. vocals). The self-production involves that the band’s songs sound exactly as they want them to sound. And the final result is spotless.

Serbia has a dynamic Celtic rock/punk scene. Irish Stew of Sindidun will release their fourth album soon and young bands Scordisci and Cassidy’s Brewery have released some singles. But, before them, Orthodox Celts opened the track to this genre on the Balkan countries. Six albums and still growing.

Track listing:

01 - One/Milk & Honey 3:03
02 - I Wish You the Very Worst 3:07
03 - Morrison's Jig 1:17
04 - Save Me 2:53

REVIEW - THE DETONATORS "My World" Destiny Records Cat. no. Destiny-153 (2013)

The Detonators "My World" Destiny Records, Cat no. Destiny-153
Release date: 30 August 2013
Running time: 33:44, 11 tracks

My World” is the follow-up to The DetonatorsR’n’R Keeps Me Alive” EP. The guys from Vojvodina have put aside the rockabilly and/or psychobilly influences and have pushed forward the Social Distortion infused material adding more Clash drops via Rancid.

One thing is clear: The Detonators are a Rock’n’Roll band. With a folk twist, but a R’n’R band. They told it clearly, “R’n’R Keeps Me Alive”, and most of the tracks deal with classic R’n’R topics: highway, trucks, driving, girls, beer, being in a band …

The songs to check out: “Let’s Go”, an opening track in the Rancid vein, “My World”, with their Mick Jones style guitar work, “Far Away”, a R’n’R à la Social Distortion, “Away from Home”, rockabilly with some Rancid touches, “Hey Baby”, a catchy number, “Kings & Queens”, a complaint about modern society with a Pogues background and “A Word or Two”, a song about friendship moving to the Dropkick Murphys end.

Another thing that I would like to point out: the artwork and packaging. The front and back cover drawings are amazing, and the digipack packaging is a real labour of love. All the lyrics and credits are included.

If you like Rock’n’Roll backed with accordion and mandolin, the English band The Devil’s Rejects stuff or Manu Chao’s R’n’R numbers with The Hot Pants and Mano Negra, then get this album and don’t miss The Detonators shows. BTW, they will be touring Spain in March, playing at the Saint Patrick’s Day Festival at Gruta 77 in Madrid.

Tracklist:

01 - Let's Go 2:20
02 - My World 2:59

REVIEW - THE DETONATORS - "R'n'R Keeps Me Alive" My Heart Records (2011)

The Detonators "R'n'R Keeps Me Alive" My Heart Records MHR 001
Release date: December 11, 2011
Running time: 16:18, 6 tracks

R’n’R Keeps Me Alive” is the second recording released by the Serbian band The Detonators. The band from Novi Sad has been playing around Serbia and Europe since 2010 and they released their 16 track debut album titled “Nuthin’ to Lose” in Spring 2011. The “R’n’R Keeps Me Alive” EP was issued at the end of 2011 and recorded by the current line-up: Schmuck (vocals, guitar), Peter (accordion), Yanbo (bass , background vocals), Boris (drums, background vocals) and Mix (mandolin).

The Detonators have been described as Rockabilly with Irish Folk and Psychobilly influences. I find some “folkabilly” similarities with the likes of Jamie Clarke’s Perfect  (for instance, on track no. 2 “Down & Out”) and punk with a folk twist similarities with the likes of The Buccaneers or The Porters (just listen to the opening track “Next to You”). The accordion on “Lost in Paradise” is also an evidence that The Detonators love The Pogues too, but maybe the biggest influence of the band is Social Distortion.

The band is really tight and their sound based on accordion and mandolin is really accomplished. Some people could say that they are not really original, but this is not totally true. These Serbian guys have worked hard on their own sound and this EP is definitely a strong release if you like punk with folkie instruments. Enjoy!

1. Next To You 2:03
2. Down And Out 2:47
3. Pictures From The Other Side 3:43

REVIEW - IRISH STEW OF SINDIDUN "New Tomorrow" One Records (2011)

Irish Stew of Sindidun “New Tomorrow”
One Records ONE 186
Release date: October 2011
Running Time: 40:18, 12 tracks

New Tomorrow” is the third album recorded by the Serbian band Irish Stew of Sindidun. If the previous album was a gem, I can say that this CD is another one. The co-operation between the excellent songwriter Bojan Petrovic and the producer Marko Jovanovic has turned out to be flawless. Even the songs that I don’t like are well produced and well written (for instance “When Day is Over”)

The lads from Belgrade take the inspiration from the great Celtic (pop) rock and Celtic punk bands. Yes, influences can be found on different tracks, but all of them have the Irish Stew stamp on them. The first bands that come to my mind are the Scottish band Coinneach and the German band Paddy Goes to Holyhead. I enjoy instrumental tunes and I feel that the opening track “From the Ashes to Sky” has a Scottish touch similar to Coinneach’s tunes. As far as PGTH is concerned, both vocals and fiddle show a link to this German band on tracks such as “Lady of New Tomorrow” and the catchy song “No Surrender”. By the way, the latter is another evidence that a guy from Serbia can write songs that sound as if they where Irish traditionals.

Other great tracks are “Dream Shelf” ( a song that can rival top Canadian bands like Great Big Sea), “Home” (imaging the Oysterband covering Flogging Molly), “Take Me High” (top-notch Celtic pop-rock à la Carlos NuñezMayo Longo” era), “One Way ticket” (fast paced Celtic punk) and “One for the Road” (another catchy Celtic punk number)

Fiddle, Banjo, tin whistle, guitar, bass and drums from Serbia. Yes, far away from Ireland. But the Irish soul lays in Belgrade too.

Tracklist:

01 – From Ashes to the 7th Sky 2:23
02 – Lady of New Tomorrow 3:22
03 – Dream Shelf 2:27
04 – When Day is Over 4:14

"The WhiskeyDicks are a raving group of Celtic Gypsy Punk Rockers who have a throbbing reputation as "One Hell of a Good Time". They began in 2001 outside the liquor store in Whitehorse when a pair of brothers and one good friend set out to earn money to spend at the liquor store by playing music about liquor in front of said liquor store (for more details, listen to “chim chimney” from Get’er done, 2008).

Since moving to Vancouver in 2002, the band has earned themselves a handful of music degrees and a large fan-base in BC and the Yukon, where they’ve continued to perform four or five times a year since they left.

They are a strange brew of Fiddle, Cello, Guitar, Drums, Accordion and Voices spiked with enthusiasm that is infectious and eclecticism that knows no bounds. Simply put, they’re a bunch of highly trained musicians out for a good time, playing songs about friendship, drinking and drinking with friends with the spirit of the mad and the thirst of a sailor who just got kicked out of his metal band. It is quite simply impossible to have a bad time with them in the room cause they won't let you... well, come on then, let's do a shot. Last one to break the table with their glass buys the next round!"

1) TEN SECOND MARCH (Grand Rapids, MI, USA)

Ten Second March formed in 2004 by Rob (Rotten) Costley. In 2005 the "Broken Knuckle Anthems EP" was released to critical acclaim and the band hit the road for an endless amount of shows over the next few years. In early 2007, the band released the "Noble Ribbon Boys" digital single that signaled a rebirth of sorts for the band. In the fall of 2008, the band released "The Path You Chose" on it's own Media Riot Records Imprint. The songs on this record describe a journey that most, if not all of us, can relate to. Songs like "Hey Jimmy" are a tribute to a fallen friend and brother and deal with issues of loss and grief. "Heroes of the Corner Bar" is a typical night out with our friends. The "Divided you fall" is a call out to our scene. The music is still straight up street rock with a punk influence. The themes are still working class, DIY, punk fuckin rock. Ten Second March prides itself on being nearly 100% DIY. We do all our own recording, writing, artwork, fliers, bookings, T-shirt printing, and almost everything else. We don't know how to do it any other way.

3) THE BEER BARONS (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

Brewed in Ottawa, Ontario, the Beer Barons blend traditional celtic and folk music and deliver it with the speed and intensity of punk. Everyone who has experienced their live show is well aware of their unique style of drinking music that makes you drink faster!

Starting in the early months of 2009 The Beer Barons immediately started churning out feverishly alcohol fuelled covers of their favourite folk songs as well their own audience gripping original compositions. It was clear by the summer of 2009 that the Beer Barons, through their song writing and showmanship, were a force to be reckoned with!

Over the next couple years the Beer Barons would share the stage with peers at the top of their game such as The Mahones, The Dreadnoughts, and Farler’s Fury as well as other top notch acts from the local Ottawa scene.

In the winter of 2010 the Beer Barons released their first demo “Six Pack Sampler” themselves. It is the product of two years of whiskey, tears, and heart wrenching line up changes. Despite all the forces that were working against them the release is a success and contains an eclectic collection of songs containing humorously bawdy sing-along’s (Dicken’s Cider), epic historical ballads (Flibustier of Martinique), gritty pirate tunes (Man Overboard), and crowd pleasing favourites (Folsom Prison).

Now with a powerful new line-up and 2011 just getting started, the Beer Barons are preparing to take the scene by storm!

Line-up:

Davey Lawless - Vocals, tin whistle, harmonica
Eryk Chamberland - Guitar, backup vocals
Tom Birkhan - Drums
Sarah Grant - Bass, backup vocals
Dan Bader - Mandolin, backup vocals
Eve Chamberland - Accordion, Banjo

4) THE FINN MacCOOLS (Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A.)

The Finn MacCools brings power rock to every show, fueled by the greatest Celtic musical traditions from their hometown and around the world. The Finn MacCools combines both fresh new talent, and the fire and mastery of former members of popular Milwaukee bands Steel Bonnets and Reilly, and takes it to a whole new level. Daniel Brown has appeared with the Steel Bonnets and numerous bands up and down the Third Coast. He brings a unique organic style of hand drumming to fan the flames of The Finn MacCools explosive sound. Jim Kiley is a talented multi-instrumentalist best known as a founding member of Milwaukee's Reilly. Jim expertly drives the powerhouse sound of guitar, banjo, and mandolin way past the speed limit. Dan Smars adds his memorable voice and rich 12-string guitar, igniting blinding flashes of inspiration to the band. He is a veteran of the Milwaukee-area music scene and most recently served with distinction in the Steel Bonnets. Tom Hansen has been a staple of the Milwaukee music scene for over 20 years, appearing with acts ranging from True Heart Susie to E.W. Porter and Rockin Horse as well as Reilly. His Celtic fiddle adds a memorable spice to the rock of The Finn MacCools. Kevin Dubord brings a fresh perspective and energetic talent to his Celtic debut, infusing The Finn MacCools with his unmistakable bass guitar groove. The Finn MacCools add their fire to centuries-old traditionals, add a powerful spin to favorites by Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, the Pogues, as well as their own inspiring original songs. Come witness the birth of a new legend in Celtic music. Finally, a "reel" rock band!

Line-up:

5) CRAIC WISELY (Grand Rapids, Michigan, U.S.A.)

Craic Wisely is a six piece celtic-rock outfit based in West Michigan. With two voices, a fiddle, a cello, two guitars, a bass and a set of drums, Craic Wisely plays a combination of original music and Irish traditional favorites. Every song CW plays has an edge that separates it from every other Celtic-Rock act on the scene. Craic Wisely plays songs. Crowds sing along, and people dance, on occasion beer is spilled. In the seven years CW has been playing out, they have absorbed the character of your favorite haunt… seasoned, personal and ready to romp. Won’t you romp with us?

Line-Up:

Todd Herring - Vocals, guitar
Christopher Morse - Drums

6) THE GREAT DRUNKARDS (Novi Sad, Serbia)

The Great Drunkards were formed around the end of May in 2008. It all started when Gandy, Vlasta and Leo were drinking in the pub, 'twas Gandy who came up with an idea and said: "Let's make a music band"! Just a day later the band started working, looking for more and more members and playing more and more songs, to make them what they are today, the Great Drunkards. They play Irish indie/folk/rock music with a little bit of their own experiments, or how they like to say, they play the Irish "Hard Folk". As far as the name is concerned, 'twas in a merry month of June, when they were having a binge after a rehearsal, one of the members said something like: "How great drunkards we are...", and there it was, the band was named, Great Drunkards! What will happen with them in the future, nobody knows. But one thing is for sure. Their jolly spirits will never grow old.

Line-up:

Aleksandar Filipovic - Mandolin, octave mandolin, lead vocals
Vlasta Iker - Fiddle
Dejan Boljanovic - Accordion, vocals
Leo Bosnjak - Guitar, vocals
Jovana Milic - Bass
Vukasin Vucinic - Drums

Vol. VIII SERBIA & CROATIA

Volume 8th includes bands from Serbia and Croatia. I have decided to include Irish Stew of Sindidun, even if they are well-known after their second album, but not to put other well known bands such as Belfast Food (Croatia) and the Orthodox Celts (Serbia), with a longer discography.

http://belfastfood.com

http://orthodoxcelts.com

As it has already been said, Irish Stew of Sindidun (Serbia) has released a couple of albums and they have shown their maturity with the excellent second CD.

So Many Words (2005)
Dare to Dream (2008)

In the sampler you will find 4 tracks from the first album and 5 tracks from the second one.

www.irishstew.net

The next band, Great Drunkards, are also from Serbia. Their discography only includes a 6 tracks demo

www.myspace.com/greatdrunkards

In the sampler I have included 5 tracks from the demo

The third band is Shamrock (Croatia). They have released a demo and an EP

Demo (4 tracks) 2007
Otom Potom (5 tracks EP, 2008)

All the tracks from the EP are included in the sampler.

www.shamrocklovran.com

The 4th band, Jolly Rogers (Croatia) has not recorded any CD yet:

Two demo tracks can be found here.

Finally, another new band from Croatia, Paddy's Allstars. Only one demo track in the sampler
