2017-06-27 ALBUM REVIEW - CHEERS! "Daily Bread" (2017)

Cheers! "Daily Bread"
Release date: May 18, 2017
Running time: 48:23, 13 tracks

After a couple of 2 track singles and an album, the band from Pilsen are back with their best work to date. “Daily Bread”, the second CD by Cheers! Is a fantastic album. The seven Czech musicians have been able to blend the classic sound of the likes of Flogging Molly with electric guitars and a lot of attitude. There’s hardly no slow moments on this album, but amazing aggro Celtic punk songs.

Chances” is brilliant opening track in the Flatfoot 56 vein. “London Days” keeps the level up with its gang vocals. “Misery” is angry folk punk at its best. “Saint of the Scene” features gang vocals too. So Cal punk meets  Across The Border accordion/fiddle punk on “Here We Are”. “Pie of Shame” is an appealing number with fantastic accordion and electric guitar. ”Dagger”, “Standard” and “Land Where Nobody Lives” follow the path of bands such as Flogging Molly, The Tossers or Greenland Whalefishers, while “Hey Devil” moves to The Dreadnoughts polka territory. Finally, “Once We Reach the Ireland’s Bay” is a top-notch folk ballad where uileann pipes by guest
Zdeněk Bugoš can be heard.

Daily Bread” comes in a four panel digipack with a 16 page booklet. All the lyrics to the songs are included, together with a drawing for every song.

Front man Pafka suggested that I should mention the weak points on “Daily Bread”. That’s a hard work, as the album is excellent. Maybe
Káťa’s whistles are covered by the electric instruments on some tracks. And perhaps the closing track should have been “Once We Reach the Ireland’s Bay”, but the fast-paced “Only Thing” is also a good song to finish up the album.

IMHO, Cheers! have reached the summit with “Daily Bread” and probably it’s the right moment to start and European tour. If you are working for a big Celtic or punk festival and you’re looking for kick-ass band, contact Cheers! straightaway.

2017-04-04 ALBUM REVIEW - BENJAMING'S CLAN "Sedm statečných" (2017)

Benjaming's Clan "Sedm statečných"
Release date: January 28, 2017
Running time: 53:30, 14 tracks

"
Sedm statečných" is the second album released by Czech band Benjaming’s Clan. The bagpipes punk family band Benjaming Band evolved into a Celtic rock band when Polish musician Jacek joined them. A new approach involved a new name. Another Polish musician came on board, fiddler Gřešek. Later, Gřešek left the band and they hired the services of female fiddler Barča. Gřešek came back and currently Benjaming’s Clan are a 7 piece band. In fact, the title of their brand new album “Sedm statečných” means “The Magnificent Seven”.

It would be simple to say that the old bagpipes punk band evolved into a bagpipes rock band. But this would not be 100% right. The bagpipes rock side of the band is showcased on the amazing song “Baby Boxy”, the interesting tribal number “Šel do baru”, “Všude kde jsi” with a Mudmen touch, the bluesy “Zeleznej Dedek”, “Pohádková” or the opening track “Andel strážný”. But there are quite a few Celtic rock numbers were no pipes are played. Yes, accordion, percussion or backing banjo play a big role on Benjaming’s Clan new album.

Stoletá láska” has all the above mentioned elements and it’s one of the album highlights. “Vekslák” is a catchy number, thanks to its na-na-na vocals, an addictive accordion and fiddle theme, and some yee-has. I love the bluegrass-y “Obézní muz”, and “Hudebníkova Zpoved’” ans “Slepecký pes” are enjoyable songs too.

The only cover in the album is the closing number “Amazing Grace”. It gets an ethereal treatment with guest Maruska on female vocals.
Most of the lyrics on the album have been written by their friend Jiri lokouta, but “Zeleznej Dedek” has been written by poet Petr Havránek.

"
Sedm statečných" is more ambitious musically than their previous album and Benjaming's Clan have not failed, quite the contrary. In other words, "Sedm statečných" is the Benjaming’s Clan’s most mature effort to date.

Track listing:

01 - Andel strážný 4:00
02 - Stoletá láska 3:11
03 - Hudebníkova zpoved' 3:32
04 - Babyboxy 3:03
05 - Slepecký pes 4:45
06 - Zeleznej dedek 4:08
07 - Vekslák 3:12
08 - Krize 4:56
09 - 1305 2:49
10 - Všude kde jsi 4:43
11 - Obézní muz 3:18
12 - Šel do baru 4:35

2016-07-31 ALBUM REVIEW - HAKKA MUGGIES "MDCCXLVI" (2016)

Hakka Muggies "MDCCXLVI"
Release date: March 15, 2016
Running time: 45:06, 10 tracks

Hakka muggies -

1 - Shetland; seasoned cod liver and oatmeal boiled in the stomach (muggie) of a fish.
2 - an innovative folk metal band from the Czech Republic established in 2002.

Hakka Muggies should be familiar to some of you. They have been blending folk music from Ireland, Scotland and Brittany with punk and metal influences and they were featured in our Czech sampler in 2012   . After their excellent album “Feed the Fairies”, Hakka Muggies released an EP, and “MDCCXLVI (1746)” is their brand new studio album. And I daresay it’s their most ambitious project to date, a concept album that takes place during the last Jacobite rebellion ("the Forty-five") which was defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

The first track is titled “Ro-ràdh”. It’s an intro featuring “Ye Jacobites by Name”. Hamish wants to join the Jacobite movement. Maggie, his love, doesn’t want him to go to war. Angus remains at home in order to court Maggie. Malcolm is an Englishman whose girlfriend has recently died, so he decides to join the British troops. Great balance between the flute and the metal guitars.

Hamish” is the next number. The first part is reminiscent of Wolfstone, maybe more metal infused, with kick-ass fiddle. The last part moves to the Celtas Cortos territory, because of the flute. Hamish wants to fight, and Maggie wants him to remain at home, but Angus pushes Hamish to join the Jacobite ranks. One of my favorite numbers on the CD.

On “Maggie”, Hamish and Maggie discuss about the situation and finally Maggie is sad because she was not able to keep Hamish by her side. The song features a badass guitar led rendition of “Star of Munster”.

Tracks no. 4 is called “Troll”, Hamish meets a troll and tells him that he won’t kill him if he tells him three reasons. The trolls tells Hamish that he’ll meet Maggie again only if he leaves him alone. Interesting fiddle intro on this bridge number.

Malcolm” is another standout song featuring fiddle and whistle, maybe more British folk rock than folk metal. Malcolm’s girlfriend has died and he decides to join the British Army. He meets the press-gang on the next song, “British Army”, a song based on “Join the British Army” featuring fiddle, whistle, accordion, kick-ass percussion and metal guitars.

The following song is called “Angus”. Angus wants Maggie to marry him, but she is waiting for Hamish. A folky beginning with fiddle and whistle and some jazzy arrangements before shifting to the metal end.

Bitva” means battle. The Jacobites are butchered and Hamish decides not to kill Malcolm. Then, the British soldiers bring him to jail. Punk goes metal.

Track no. 9 is titled “Vězení (Prison)”. Both Malcolm and Hamish are sad. They discuss and Malcolm tells Hamish to swap clothes and to meet his beloved Maggie. Fiddle, guitar and rhythm section fit perfectly well.

The album is over with “Bheir mí ó”, a number featuring a passage of “Johnnie Cope”. Fantastic whistle with a folky feel. Hamish comes back to his village and Angus and Maggie are leaving the church where they have got married. Moreover, Maggie is pregnant. No happy end as you can imagine.

MDCCXLVI” is housed in a gatefold sleeve with a 24 page booklet. The album was recorded between 2014 and 2016 at Stereo Mysterio studio by Jirka “Gappeq” Tomášek, mixed by Dan Šatra and mastered by Kakaxa, 3 bees. The album artwork (cover and drawings for every song) was made by Eva Stříbrská. The line-up that recorded the album: Markéta Janatová (Maggie, fiddle, low whistle), Martin Pobuda (Hamish, bodhrán, tambourine), Albrecht K. Smuten (Troll, Malcolm), Erik Onoda (Angus, guitar), Petr Jejkal (bass, Sergenat) Jiří Skála (drums, accordion, vocals) and Martin Vítězník (vocals).

Hats-off to Hakka Muggies for this brilliant project. An interesting album for folk-rock/folk-metal fans.

2016-04-24 ALBUM REVIEW - PIRATES OF THE PUBS "Drunken Forever"

Pirates of the Pubs "Drunken Forever" Self-released
Release date: March 17, 2016
Running time: 33:04, 13 tracks

The Czech Republic has a burgeoning Celtic punk scene. Most of the Celtic punk fans will name immediately bands such as Pipes and Pints, Benjaming’s Clan or Cheers!. Apart from them, we have come across a bunch of amazing bands in the last years: Curlies, Vintage Wine, Five Leaf Clover and Pirates of the Pubs.

Pirates of the Pubs hail from České Budějovice in the Czech region of Bohemia, a city famous for their local beer Budweiser Budvar. They are Baruška aka Barča (lead vocals, fiddle, tin whistle), Skippy (lead vocals, mandolin), knuP (electric guitar, ukulele), Rimmsie (bass, background vocals), Adam L’Kroh (acoustic guitar, background vocals), Matěj aka Doktor Zicherheitz (accordion, background vocals) and Jirka (drums).

Drunken Forever” starts with “(Pirates) …. Are coming” a Celtic punk intro sung in English showcasing mandolin, fiddle and yohoho screams.

The next track is sung in their mother tongue: “Vítejte na palubě”,  a fast-paced song featuring fiddle and accordion with a chorus that reminds me of Skontra.

Jolly Roger” is a pirate number sung by Skippy too. The rhythm section and the electric guitar back perfectly the accordion and the fiddle on this song with an infectious chorus to sing along.

Track no. 4 is titled “Irish Music Heart” and it’s the first song on the album that is sung by fiddler Barča. As usual, a lively song with a well balanced mix between electric and acoustic instruments.

Skippy sings again on “Stupid Drinking Song”. Barča plays tin whistle on this number showcasing la la la chorus.

Another song about the band, “Pirates of the Pubs”. The song begins acoustically but soon burst into a fast-paced Celtic punk number. Barča sings lead vocals.

Tell Me Ma” is a song that has been over-exposed. Anyway, Pirates of the Pubs deliver an interesting rendition sung by Barča. At the beginning, they use the lyric “She’s the belle of Dublin city” instead of the usual “She’s the belle of Belfast city”. As the Orthodox Celts and The Rumjacks did on their covers, Pirates of the Pubs finally mention their home town at the end of the song: “She’s the belle of Budweis city”.

The following track, “Bohemian”,  is a proud a cappella song about their region, where Barča sings lead vocals and the boys sing the backing vocals.

Track no. 9 is called “Na vlnách naděje” and obviously is sung in Czech by Skippy. It’s a kick-ass fast-paced Celtic punk anthemwhich is followed by another song in Czech based on the “Star of the County Down” tune: "Vlci". The arrangements are top-notch and all the band members do a great job.

More songs about the band: “Budweis Pirates Clan”. Gang vocals and brilliant accordion by Doktor Zicherheitz.

Pirates of the Pubs move to the rebel songs territory with “The Wind that Shakes the Barley”, a self-penned song that fits perfectly well to  the 100 anniversary of the Easter rising. The first part has an Irish Stew of Sindidun twist and
Barča plays tin whistle instead of fiddle on this number.

To finish up, Barča sings a quieter song called “The Boy from Copenhaguen” backed by the acoustic guitar.

Drunken Forever” is packed in a digipack that comes with a 16 page booklet where all the lyrics to the songs and a lot of pics are included. The album was recorded, mixed and mastered at Hellsound studio and the artwork was made by knuP. Several bands are thanked too, among them Vintage Wine, Hakka Muggies and Cheers!.

Pirates of the PubsDrunken Forever” is an impressive debut album with a great production and a fantastic sound. “The Legendary Irish Punk Band”, as they called themselves on the CD tray, has recorded 13 different songs and only two standards. And the packaging is a labour of love too. I’m looking forward to listening to their sophomore album. Hats-off !
