REVIEW: KILMAINE SAINTS - THE GOOD, THE PLAID, AND THE UGLY (2010) KSCD001

Kilmaine Saints – The Good, The Plaid, and the Ugly – KSCD001
Self-produced and self-financed
Release Date: July 20th, 2010
Running Time: 41:57 – 12 tracks

Kilmaine Saints is an 8 piece band from Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania fronted by a County Mayo born lead vocalist. They define themselves as “Superior.Celtic.Rock”. The band has three members that play the pipes, but definitely they are not a “bagpipes rock” band. And, even if they say that their influences are bands such as Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and The Pogues, I feel that their definition is better than Celtic punk.

The Good, The Plaid, and the Ugly” is an excellent debut album in which 8 out of 12 tracks are self-penned songs. The band has four songwriters: Brendan “Duke” Power (Lead vocals, bodhrán), Frank “Rev Fluffy” Aponte (Multi-instrumentalist: tenor banjo, bass, mandolin…), “Lovely” Liz Mallin (Fiddle) and Mike “McKnuckles” McNaughton (drums). The quality of their songwriting work is increased by the musicianship of all the band members, especially Barry “Black-Eye” Mills guitars, Liz fiddle and Mike drums.

As far as the covers are concerned, they have chosen 4 numbers that have been played by a lot of bands. However, their versions are really fresh and different from the ones we are used to hear. For instance, the opening track, “Amazing Grace” is a pipes and drums band version. “Whiskey in the Jar” is closer to Thin Lizzy than to The Dubliners + The Pogues. “The Wearing of the Green” (a song that shares the music with “The Rising of the Moon”) begins as if it was a pipes and drums tune, but immediately it turns into a Dropckick Murphys style song. And “The Leaving of Liverpool”, with a slight Flogging Molly touch at the beginning, shows that the band rocks.

The second track, “The Saints are Up!” is obviously about them: “Raise a shot, raise a pint, put your arms around your mate ‘cuz we’re the noisy drunken bastards called the Kilmaine Saints”. Great pipes work and great vocals with a DKM edge.

My Island” has a Great Big Sea feeling and good guitar and fiddle contributions.

The next song, “Farewell, Self Esteem”, makes you think that you are going to listen to a Paperboys song, but it becomes a Celtic punk number in which all the band sounds really tight: fiddle, tin whistle, accordion…

Gold and Guns (Will Get the Job Done)” is another Celtic rock track: excellent guitars and superb fiddle and tin whistle.

The shadow of bands such as The Dreadnoughts can be heard in “Ten Fathoms Deep”, a true pirate song.

Painting Paradise Square” tells the story of the Irishmen in Amerikay. A song in the Dropkick Murphys/Flogging Molly vein. Hat off to Frank Aponte, both songwriting and his playing are awesome in this song.

One of my favourite tracks is “Casey’s Swagger”, a Seven Little Sisters meet The Real McKenzies song. Brendan vocals are aggressive enough and the band, lead by Liz, is really topnotch.

The last track is “Póg Mo Thóin”. It is not the kind of song that I would have chosen to close the album, but the final “kitchen party” tunes improve it.

Kilmaine SaintsThe Good, The Plaid, and the Ugly”. Or should I say “The Good, the Excellent and the Best”?

"Her Pillow is a project that mixes two very different cultures and musical styles. On one hand the ballads and the folk-songs of Ireland with progressions and sounds peculiar to celtic music On the other hand the violent, even if sometime thoughtful, impact of 80's rock, based on electric guitar, bass and drums. The outcome is an overwhelming cascade of sounds that finds its higher expression in live performances, when restless reels alternate with dissonant and pining love-songs and when the public becomes necessarily part of the show. Her Pillow always try to evolve their music: the first references to the Pogues, Tom Waits or to the Clash are now fading in a new sound and style that brings folk-music into the groove of a punk-rock band. The desire to express and create different emotions will never end because if it were so Her Pillow would sing their last song.

BOOTLEG - STEELEYE SPAN

Steeleye Span is/was one of the main British Folk Rock bands. This bootleg from 1973 features mainly the songs from their 4th and 5th albums.

(Taken from Wikipedia)

"Below the Salt is a 1972 album by Steeleye Span, and considered by many fans to be one of their best. The album has a slightly medieval theme, most notably in the artwork and title. The album cover shows the band in period costume at a feast, while the title refers to practice in the Middle Ages of having salt (something of a rarity) placed in the center of the table separating the family from the servants, who were situated "below the salt". Some of the music on the album has a medieval motif, but only a few of the songs arguably date back quite so far. The ballad "King Henry" (Child Ballad 32), and the a cappella "Gaudete" are certainly very old, and the lyrics to "Royal Forester" date from 1293. However, while "Gaudete" is performed in an authentic style, electric guitars abound in the performance of "King Henry".

Gaudete became the band's first hit, reaching number 14 on the UK charts. To give the impression of the choristers approaching and moving away, as if on a pilgrimage, the song was given a long fade in and out (the single did not fade in/fade out).

By this point, Ashley Hutchings had left the band, leaving Maddy Prior and Tim Hart as the only remaining founding members. The album reached number 43 in the UK album charts.

All songs on the album are traditional, adapted by Steeleye Span.

The lineup of the band for this album was:

Maddy Prior - vocals
Tim Hart - vocals, appalachian dulcimer, guitar
Peter Knight - violin, viola, mandolin, banjo, piano, vocals
Rick Kemp - bass, drum, vocals
Bob Johnson - guitar, vocals

Parcel of Rogues is a 1973 album by the Electric folk band Steeleye Span. It was their most successful album thus far, breaking into the Top 30.

The album grew out of a theatrical project the band undertook, a version of Robert Louis Stephenson's Kidnapped, staged in Edinburgh. The book and play were set against the backdrop of the Scottish Jacobite movement, and in the course of developing the play, the band came across a considerable amount of 18th century Scottish poetry that they mined for the album.

If the album has a theme, it is change and the tension between old and new. "The Weaver and the Factory Maid" is about the tension of early industrialization, with a young man celebrating the factory because there are a lot of women for him to pursue, while an old man denounces the factory because of its economic effects. The song illustrates this tension nicely by contrasting a more traditional fiddle with a more rock-style guitar. There is a very sharp contrast between the sweet acoustically-driven "The Ups and Downs" followed immediately by the funky distorted loud guitar in "Robbery with Violins". "Cam Ye O'er Frae France" explores this tension in a different way, both in its lyric denouncement of political changes and the contrast between the poem's traditional Scots dialect and its sharp electronic guitars. And "Alison Gross" is about a literal change, as an evil witch transforms a man who rejects her into a worm.

"Robbery with Violins" is better known as "The Bank of Ireland" (in O'Neill's book). A version of this tune was played in the film Titanic. "The Ups and Downs" is also known as "The Maid of Tottenham". The satirical "Cam Ye O'er Frae France" has suffered the same fate as Shakespeare's work: the biting references to King George and his mistresses ("riding on a Goosie") that everyone understood at the time can now sound nonsensical to anyone who doesn't know the history. Maddy sings the rolled "r"s for all they are worth. Two of the songs on this album originate in Hogg's Jacobite Reliques, while "Rogues in a Nation" is a Robert Burns poem denouncing the Act of Union in 1707 that united England and Scotland. The title of the album derives from a line in the song "Rogues in a Nation", here sung a cappella. The sleeve shows a milkmaid on decorated tiles. This might be related to the fact that it was recorded in "Sound Techniques" studio, a former dairy, which still has a statue of a cow on the wall.

The album uses more overdubbing than any previous album by Steeleye Span. On "Hares on the Mountain" there are two channels for Peter Knight's mandolins, two for recorders and one for him playing harmonium. On "The Weaver and the Factory Maid" Maddy Prior is heard on three channels, counterpointing herself at the top of her voice.

The album saw the band re-introduce the use of drums, driven in part by Rick Kemp's background in rock. After the album was released, the band undertook a US tour, opening for Jethro Tull. Because of this, the band decided to add a full-time drummer in the person of Nigel Pegrum. The drums took the band further in the direction of rock, as demonstrated by "The Wee Wee Man" and "Cam Ye O'er Frae France".

BOOTLEGS - TEJEDOR

(Taken from the band's MySpace)

"Tejedor is composed of three siblings from Avilés , a town in the northernmost Spanish region of Asturias. The group members, although still in their twenties, have devoted their lives to Asturian traditional music and now are writing their own, personal sounding compositions. They are José Manuel (Asturian bagpipes, low whistle and flutes), his brother Javier (button accordion, bagpipe, percussion and flutes) and their sister Eva Tejedor (traditional percussion and vocals).

Both brothers won MacCallan bagpipe awards at the Inter Celtic Festival in Lorient. José Manuel, who won this award three times, played pipes with Spanish rock band Revólver in their unplugged 1998 tour. The brothers have also won all Asturian prices as a bagpipe and drum partnership. Eva, for her part, is an exceptional singer and percussionist. José Manuel is the most elegant and virtuosistic piper in the Spanish folk scene.

This is a rich mix of Asturian traditional music and new ideas. The music produced by Tejedor demonstrates the strong ties between Asturian and Celtic traditions, but Spain is never sublimated in the mix for the pure sake of making the sound more approachably "Celtic." Strong playing by all three musicians support some wonderful original and traditional songs.

Tejedor have performed all over the world in festivals as Celtic Connections (Scotland), Piping Live (Scotland), William Kennedy Piping Festival (Ireland), Festival Interceltique de Lorient (France) or Montreal Celtic Festival (Canada). Musicians like Michael McGoldrick, Duncan Chisholm, Phil Cunningham, James Mackintosh, Faltriqueira, or Kepa Junkera have guested on their three CDs to date."

FREE DOWNLOADS - THE RACOONS

The Racoons is a Russian band playing Celtic folk-rock. Arranging traditional Irish and Breton music (not only!) the band makes a strange brew of folk, reggae, jazz-rock and a bit of the Swinging Sixties. In the beginning of its career the band covered The Beatles, the Stones and The Who. Following the example of folk-stars of the 70-s, such as Tri Yann, Fairport Convention etc., the band combines rock instruments - electric guitars, drums, bass, - with mandolin, fiddle and Irish tin whistle. The Racoons sing in different languages (English, Russian, French, German) believing meanwhile, that music and the mood produced by it mean more than words. The Racoons appreciate good sense of humor and - being true Russians - good booze. In their opinion, alcohol and music - these are the two things, which lie at the heart of European folk culture.

The Racoons live in Nizhny Novgorod, the big city on the bank of the Volga, 400 km to the East of Moscow. Founded in 1997, since 2002 the group has been presenting itself at the folk stage of Russia. The band is popular with Celtic folk lovers in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Racoons take part in folk festivals and popularize folk music in their native town.

The Racoons believe that music has no borders either in time, or in space. This explains the existence of a Russian band playing Celtic music with guitars from the Beatles era.
