2018-07-05 LATIN-AMERICAN FOLK PUNK COMPILATION 2018!!!

Jimmy Attack (La Fiesta del Diablo) and Pablo Riguetti (Aires Bastardos) have been working hard on a compilation featuring folk-punk bands from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile and Mexico: "Compilado Latinoamérica folk-punk 2018". Pablo told me about their project some months ago and I gave some leads to them.

Finally, the album is ready on YouTube and will be available for purchase and download soon. I'm glad to see this kick-ass compilation out. You'll find bands you're familiar with (Lugh, RATS, La Fiesta del Diablo, McMiners, Punching Namard, Lucky Seven or Raise My Kilt) and brand new bands (Aires Bastardos, Gypsy Vanner, Cochinillas Alcohol Club, Index Of, The Celtas Ride Again, No Pibe, Bestiariö or Seven Rats Piper).

Hats-off guys!

2016-04-06 REVIEW - LUGH "Histórias do mar" (2016)

Lugh "Histórias do mar"
Release date: March 7, 2016
Running time: 26:07, 10 tracks

In the XXI century Celtic punk went global. There are Celtic punk bands in every continent, but there are three exotic areas in which the scene has developed very fast: the old USSR countries, Indonesia and Brazil. Lugh were one of the first bands to break through and their debut album “Quando os canecos batem” is already a classic album.

Histórias do mar” has been recorded by Daniel Jardim “Makako” on guitar and mandolin, Lucas Bala on bass, George Polidoro on drums, Leo on accordion and Biaque Santos “Pincel” on vocals. Pincel was a founding member in 2009 and he recorded Lugh’s first EP “Coisas, Musica, Ceva … Vida” (2011). Due to work commitments, he left the band, but he has been in contact with his “marujos” (sailors) friends. When Rafael Miranda (lead vocals and fiddle) left Lugh last year, Pincel came back to front the band.

The new album has all the things that have shaped Lugh’s sound: punk sound, gang vocals and brilliant accordion playing by Leo, which adds the Brazilian twist to the music. Perhaps Lugh have pushed forward their So-Cal punk influences on “Histórias do Mar”, but there is no big change on the band’s identity.

The first number is called “Marujo Perdido”. It’s a Bad Religion infused catchy number with amazing guitar work and the usual lively accordion by Leo.

Garrafas do oficio” is the second track. The Brazilian feel is more obvious, and there are infectious Hey Hey chorus and mandolin and banjo parts (banjo played by Lugh’s brother Guilherme Barros)

The next song is another highlight: “Hoje à noite” (“Tonight”). This song was the first single from the album and was available for free at Bandcamp. If you have been listening to Celtic Folk Punk Radio on Radionomy, you’ll be familiar with this song, since it has been on rotation since last February 7th. What can I say? Another sing-along anthem by Lugh.

Lutando en vao” (“Fighting in Vain”) is a more electric number and features some brass by guest Thiago “Trosso” on the ska part.

Track no. 5 is titled “Estrada do Perigo” (“Road of Danger”). Lugh go folk-metal on this song with more addictive Hey Hey chorus.

Nova fase” (“New Phase”) is an interesting song which is followed by “Tantos caminhos” (“So Many Ways”). This fast-paced song with catchy woah chorus was written by Lugh and Rafael Miranda.

Lugh moves to the country punk territory on “Algo para acreditar”, maybe a Social Distortion infused song showcasing Leo’s skills on accordion. Then, Lugh come back to the straightforward So-Cal punk on “Mais um dia”, an epic Bad Religion sounding song.

The album ends up with “Todos por Um” (“All for One”), a pub sing-along that fades in the waves.

Histórias do mar” comes in a jewel case with a fantastic 12 page booklet (lyrics to all of the songs and pics of every band member). The album was produced by Ray Zimmer and engineered and mixed by Davi Pacote at No Hill Valley Studio in Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), and mastered by Justin Perkins at Mystery Room Mastering in Milwaukee (Wisconsin, USA)

Lugh have remained faithful to their roots with their blend of So-Cal punk and Brazilian music. They keep on singing in their mother tongue and recording their own stuff instead of covering the usual standards. I think that they should be given the credit that they really deserve. If Sepultura have their own place on the Metal history, I feel that, saving the distances, Lugh have their own place on the Celtic punk history too. For a “small” scene like ours, Lugh are truly an innovative band.

REVIEW - LUGH "Quando os canecos batem" (2014) + FREE DOWNLOAD

Lugh "Quando os canecos batem"
Release date: 15 March 2014
Running time: 31:43, 12 tracks

2014 is The Year of Brazil. The FIFA World Cup will take place in the land of the “futebol” and  the Celtic punk-rock scene is skyrocketing. Lugh have just released their debut album “Quando os canecos batem” and another band from Sao Paulo is releasing their second album soon.

The band from Santa Maria,Rio Grande do Sul, is following the Ketamina footsteps in order to place Brazil in the Celtic punk map. We have love their previous work (the “Coisas, músicas, ceva ... vida” EP and the video for “Sete Mares”) and therefore we were looking forward to hearing their debut album.

The quintet’s CD is an amazing album blending Celtic infused tunes with Brazilian folk influences. The accordion fronted sound is fresh and addictive and all the musicians in the band have been able to achieve a Brazilian identity while keeping their songs faithful to the Celtic genre rules. Just listen to the sing-a-long choruses and gang vocals.

There is a festive atmosphere all over the album. The lyrics for the different songs are anthems about  pirates, weekends, friends and, above all, beer. One could say that the band’s motto is “cerveja gelada” (ice cold beer).

The  beginning of the album is perfect with songs like “Grito da noite”, with a fantastic electric guitar work and infectious gang vocals, “Sete Mares”, a shanty that could rival with North American bands’ stuff, and the classic song “O que eu preciso”, a great sing-along number.

The instrumental part at the beginning of “Dias actuais”,  has a U2 twist, and the song sound is a little bit different from that of the previous numbers.

Chinaski” is one of my faves on the album. It’s a sort of a Celtic soul song to be file together with Dexy’s Midnight Runners Too-Rye-Ay” album or The PoguesLondon Girl” song.

The following song is a re-recording of another classic song, “Sexta feira”. Brilliant stuff with excellent accordion and gang vocals. After that, the band delivers “Quando os canecos batem”, a true gem featuring  a mix of fiddle, accordion and electric guitar. Then they move to the Dropkick Murphys territory with “Nosso Cla”.

Track 9, “Vida seca” is probably the softest number on the album. The band shifts to reggae, but IMHO it doesn’t work. The next number goes to the ska-punk end and then things go better:  the Rancid influenced song “Do outro lado do mar”.

Accordion and electric guitar shine again on “Tudo que há para viver”. Finally, I love the blend of Brazilian music and Southern rock from the USA on “Jack”.

The artwork has been made by Mateus de Castro  and the sketches can be watched here.

As we have noticed in the last years, Celtic punk has already gone global. We also have our own BRICS in the Celtic punk scene, and the bands from those countries are gaining ground. Download Lugh’s debut album (it’s free),  grab your favourite beer and practice your português brasileiro. Cerveja gelada !!!!!!!!!!
