2016-08-21 ALBUM REVIEW - DRINK HUNTERS "Shameless" (2016)

Drink Hunters "Shameless"
Release date: August 10, 2016
Running time: 28:52, 11 tracks

Drink Hunters are back with their third album, “Shameless”. Some line-up changes have occurred, as Rosa (button accordion) and Fernando (fiddle) left the band and Biel from Lád Cúig is the new fiddler. However, Drink Hunters have not changed their style, since “Shameless” is another dose of the same SoCal punk infused stuff that they’ve been delivering from the beginning. The production is top-notch and the balance between the punk instruments (electric guitar, bass and drums) and the folk instruments (tin whistle and fiddle) is perfect.

The starting point to this new Celtic punk trip is “1234”. The first passage reminds me of Green Day from the “Dookie” era, but the song is 100% Drink Hunters: a fast paced number, excellent chorus and backing vocals and great fiddle and whistle arrangements.

The next song, “Trashy Music”, is one of my faves thanks to their infectious chorus. Drink Hunters are really tight on this number about sellout bands whose only goal is to top the charts and make money.

Do More Listening” is another highlight on “Shameless”. The lyrics are about the most common nightmare when Spanish people are learning English as a foreign language and the solution that the teachers usually provide.

Drink Hunters advanced a couple of acoustic versions for songs from “Shameless”. “I Need to Forget” was one of them, a song with a slight Nirvana feel. The brilliant rhythm section is showcased on the title track, “Shameless”.

Picnic Blanket” is probably the folkiest song on the Drink Hunters discography. The polka arrangements come straight from the Kerry area. Needless to say that I love this song.

My Car” is the other song that got the acoustic treatment on video. SoCal Celtic punk at its best with fantastic fiddle and tin whistle arrangements.

Track no. 8 is titled “34” and features guest “El Nota” on the rap part. “What Am I Waiting for” and “Someone Else” are typical Drink Hunters fast-paced numbers before reaching the album climax: “Celtic Punks”, a catchy number that will become the Spanish Celtic punk scene unofficial anthem. The words “We are Celtic Punks” can be heard on Basque, Galician Asturian, Castillan (Brutus Daughters on guests vocals) and Catalonian languages.

Legend has it that Paul McKenzie told that new fans are expecting to listen to some Dropkick Murphys infused music when they go to a Drink Hunters gig, but they are surprised when they get a great deal of Bad Religion and Pennywise influenced songs. Yes, Drink Hunters have created their own niche and probably their punk side is bigger than the Celtic one. But one thing is for sure: their sound is perfect. I’ve listened to a lot of albums where the tin whistle or the pipes are “killed” by the electric instruments in the final mix. However, Drink Hunters and the guys and the studio have done a great job and tin whistle and fiddle are showcased as they deserve it. You can contact the band via Facebook to buy a copy. Go ahead, you won’t regret it!

2016-07-10 ALBUM REVIEW AND FREE DOWNLOAD - SIGELPA "Rabant original" (2016)

Sigelpa "Rabant original"
Release date: July 8, 2016
Running time: 28:14, 14 tracks

The Catalonian folk-rock/Celtic punk scene is alive and kicking. Ebri Knight released their third album last year, Lád Cúig have recently released their second album and Sigelpa have just released “Rabant original”, their second album too. I guess that most of you are familiar with the band’s sound: electric guitar, fiddle, diatonic accordion and two vocalists (boy and girl).

Fourteen tracks are delivered in less than 30 minutes: one intro, 11 self-penned songs in their mother tongue and two traditional numbers sung in Galician and English.

The album opener is called “(pou)”. Pou is the Catalonian word for well and the short intro is a guy falling down in a well. The last number is titled “Sexual GGesus”, a kick-ass song featuring bluegrass sounding flddle about singer GG Allin, whose original name was Jesus Christ Allin.

There are a lot of interesting numbers to pick up between those tracks: the amazing “Aqui ens tens” (one of my faves), “Bronca” with its Breton twist, the punk-pop infused “Rabant Original” (another highlight), “Culvolució” with its bluegrass fiddling, and the two covers. “A Saia da Carolina” was previously released in 2015 as a single. Brilliant rendition that reminds me of Bastards on ParadeQuen tenha vinho”. “Excursion Around the Bay” is a newfie number that was recorded by Great Big Sea on their debut album. Sigelpa’s cover is simply perfect: firstly, the lead vocals sing a cappella with some backing vocals harmonies; secondly, percussion is added; thirdly, some hey shouts are added, and finally the song is given the Sigelpa’s full band Celtic punk treatment. Together with those tracks, a video for one song has been released: the catchy “Dinamita” (video HERE ).

A quick review of the rest of the tracks: “Puta Ciutat”, the typical Sigelpa’s sound, “Mojigatrix”, a hardcore number, “L’infern está pujant”, a ska-punk track, “Exorcisme vaginal”, a song with a Spanish folk metal touch, andUs tornarem a votar”, a number about our current democracy and election system in which people keep on voting the politicians who sold them down the river and that apparently are corrupt too.

Rabant original” has been funded by their fands via verkami. It’s been recorded and mixed by JM Castelló and Matias Scheinkman at Canela Hank Studio (Barcelona) and mastered at Hitmakers Mastering (Barcelona) by Marco Rostagno. The album will be available for free at Bandcamp till next July 15th, 2016. Hurry up and enjoy this festive album by Terrassa’s finest band.

REVIEW - CABO NORTE "Cuando cae el sol" (2015)

Cabo Norte "Cuando cae el sol" Espiral Records CDE-149
Release date: October 1st, 2015
Running time: 10 tracks

Edu Picatoste (bass), José Miguel Rivas (vocals, accordion), Joel Sans (flute, tin whistle, horn, backing vocals), José Alberto Sánchez (drums, acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Juan Miguel Valero (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) and Mar Orriols (fiddle, viola da gamba, backing vocals) hail from Barcelona and released a 6 track EP titled “Supervivientes” in 2010. “Cuando cae el sol” is Cabo Norte’s debut album, a 10 track CD on which the band develop their own brand of Celtic rock sung mainly in Spanish.

The musicianship is top notch and I guess that the band’s members have also played other genres such as blues, hard rock, funk or jazz. Some numbers sound like a more mature version of Celtas Cortos and others like Wolfstone last incarnation.

My fave numbers are “Senderos” (a song having the Celtas Cortos / Triquel twist), “Musgo y Escarcha” (an instrumental featuring uileann pipes, but having a Scottish feel), “Flor de asfalto” (viola da gamba and lute can be heard on this track) and “Gordon” (a tribute to the late Gordon Duncan influenced by Wolfstone’s classic line-up), together with “La Sirena” (a Sin É infused track) and the rocking song “El cuerno llama

Cuando sale el sol” packaging is a labour of love: digipack with a 12 page booklet supplying with all the info about the band and CD: band’s line-up, guests, thank yous, studio credits, social media links, picture of the band and pictures for every song lyrics. Besides, they have stated the titles of all the traditional tunes that have been added to some of the songs.

So, go to Bandcamp, listen to the full album and if you like it, buy Cabo NorteCuando cae el sol” CD.

Tracklist:

01. Cuando Cae El Sol 06:19
02. Senderos 04:20
03. La Sirena 04:08
04. El Cuerno Llama 04:03
