2017-06-30 EP REVIEW - THE DEAD MAGGIES "Wild Dogs and Flannies" (2017)

The Dead Maggies Wild Dogs and Flannies"
Release date: April 14, 2017
Running time:17:24, 5 tracks

The Dead Maggies have released two EPs in 2017, “the black one” and “the white one”. The black one is titled “Wild Dogs and Flannies” and lyrically differs from previous albums. The Tasman folk punk kings have delivered 5 tracks about “heavy issues such as domestic violence, assisted suicide and depletion of wilderness”.

When I die” features both male and female vocals and it’s a country number with a rockabilly twist.

She” was previously released as a single and I enjoy the vocals treatment. the next cut is called “Goodbye Gondwanaland”, an amazing number with a folkie flavour.

The last two tracks on the EP, “Wild Dogs & Foxes” and “All of my Flannies Are Broken”, are musically closer to the band’s previous offerings. That is, foot-stomping folk-punk at its best.

If you’re missing the lyrics about convicts and bushrangers, don’t worry. The songs on the “white EP” aka “The Wild Folk” tell those Tasmanian tales again (release date: June 2nd, 2017)

Track listing:

1 - When I die 03:20
2 - She    03:24
3 - Goodbye Gondwanaland 04:43
4 - Wild Dogs & Foxes 03:23
5 - All Of My Flannies Are Broken 02:26

2016-12-11 THE DEAD MAGGIES - NEW SINGLE "She"

She’ is the new emotional and powerful single from Tasmania’s hard hitting folk-punk band The Dead Maggies. It will be launched on the 15th of December at Smorgasbaarg (Hobart) with 100% of sales going to support local domestic violence NGO; Support, Help, Empowerment (SHE). The song will be available to purchase from Bandcamp from Thursday9th December from 7pm AEST.

The song adapts the words of women in Tasmania who are experiencing and have experienced domestic violence into a single story with a dark and powerful message. Their stories came from a report released by SHE and The Dead Maggies hope to raise awareness and money for this invaluable NGO.

I found reading the interviews [in SHE’s report] incredibly powerful. The women’s words made understanding the reality of seeking help, and society’s reactions, stark, bleak and horribly sexist. It was very hard to take in, the only reaction I could have was to turn it into a song. I’m proud of this song, I think it’s a good one. But it’s because of the words of those women. That’s where its power comes from. It seemed obvious from the moment I wrote it that we needed to use it to support SHE and support the movement against ending gendered violence and societies’ gendered reaction to violence.” (Gareth, The Dead Maggies)

Not long returned from their second international tour, and coming off the back of HOBOFOPO (Hobart’s first folk-punk festival) this is The Dead Maggies first release since their album “Well Hanged” (2015) which received rave reviews, national and international airplay.

This summer The Dead Maggies will be appearing at festivals including; Falls Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Taste of Tasmania, National Folk Festival and Fractangular Gathering.

She (the song) will be released in March on an EP with other tracks that are still currently being recorded.

2016-08-19 HOBOFOPO, Four days of folk-punk around Hobart

Have you heard of HOBOFOPO?

Just announced for November 2016 - Tasmania is getting a new festival. It’s the first ever Tasmanian, (and as far as we can tell, the first ever Australian) Folk-Punk Festival! What’s that you ask? Well you know folk festivals, where you run from venue to venue to catch the acts you want to see? Well it’s just like that. Only all the bands are playing folk-punk, all the venues are pubs around Hobart, and nobody will tell you you’re being too loud.

Yes the irrepressible hobos responsible for Tasmanian folk-punk legends The Dead Maggies and Tassie based label Folk ‘Til Ya Punk Records are on the rampage once more. Not satisfied with bringing the best of Australian folk-punk bands down to the south island one at a time; they’ve decided they should all be thrown together in one massive four day folk-punk orgy across various venues all around Hobart Town.

With some of the biggest names in Australian folk-punk, along with some of the best you’ve never heard of, all thrown together in mass celebration alongside the explosion of excellent local Tassie talent you’ve got something damn special. Whether you’re a fan of folk music, punk music, something in between or something totally different - this is an amazing opportunity to see a whole music community coming together to see what each other have got.

The first round of the 15+ acts to be announced include globetrotting superstars The Go Set fresh back from the USA on their constant world tour. Two acts from the Folk ‘Til Ya Punk Records roster: Sydney’s bush-punk immortals the Handsome Young Strangers and Brisbane’s celtic-punk rising stars Fox ‘N’ Firkin. And two Tassie home-grown heroes: This Is A Robbery, acoustic anarcho-punk fronted by internationally revered songwriter Chris Burrows; and new kids on the block Squid Fishing – who are just 18 and still in school, but are rapidly winning respect from the folk-punk and punk-rock communities.

Yes 2016 will go down as the year the first ever Folk ‘Til Ya Punk Festival was held; Hobarts very own folk-punk orgy, 10 -13th November. They're calling it HOBOFOPO, you can find it at www.folktilyapunk.com/fest, www.facebook.com/hobofopo or by following the hashtag #HOBOFOPO.

Hobart's Original Folk Punk Orgy HOBOFOPO has just announced the second round of acts, for their folk-punk festival in November. Joining The Go Set, Handsome Young Strangers, Fox 'N' Firkin, This Is A robbery and Squid Fishing are

Celtic Punk band The Ramshackle Army, who have been back and forth between the US from touring with Dropkick Murphys, The Tossers and Frank Turner.

No surprise that local band The Dead Maggies are on the bill, but they're bringing all the musos that they know to form The Dead Maggies' Dark Orchestra to perform a special piece titled "200 years of oppression, a history of van diemens' land".

Potty-mouthed, middle-aged Newcastle yobs The Australian Beefweek Show, are in for a fun and raucous time. They used to have some cow-punk and folk-punk songs, but they've aged disgracefully and now just get drunk and swear a lot.

The alternative darlings of beer-soaked country folk The Stragglers make their first trip to Tasmania, featuring members of The Little Sisters and Cherrywood, expect some sweet tunes and sweet melodies to swig a few bottles of whiskey too.

And, local enigma Hairyman will be venturing out from the forests of the far south of Tasmania to deliver his a'cappella bush-ballads.

And where and when will this folk-punk orgy be I hear you ask???
the dates and venues follow.

Tickets will be available soon, so keep your eyes on www.folktilyapunk.com and follow #HOBOFOPO

200 years since invading Tasmania, The Empire is in its death throes. But while Maggie’s dead, her ideas don’t rest. We can’t change the past, and we should probably talk about it... but instead, go and catch The Dead Maggies.

Tasmanian story-telling, flannie-clad, folk-punks The Dead Maggies are on tour again, this time for two months of folk festivals, doof festivals and pub gigs across NSW, QLD, and South-East Asia.

The tour starts in Queensland, and throughout August they trek south to end up at Psyfari Festival to share the Friday night stage with The Bennies and The Porkers. Then they head off to Asia for gigs in Indonesia and Vietnam, and return in time for Folk by The Sea Festival at the end of September. 2016-04-18 VIDEO - THE DEAD MAGGIES "Tommy Pieman"

The Dead Maggies release new single 'Tommy Pieman' with a new film clip which can be best described as pie-porn.

"There are so many graphic scenes of band members stuffing their faces with pies that I think I was in a mild state of disbelief whilst shooting. Only now that I've seen it edited can I fully appreciate the flesh in mouth, beard and nose beauty of it" says cinematographer Josh Troy.

'Tommy Pieman' is the third single to be released from The Dead Maggies' recent album 'Well Hanged'.

'Tommy Pieman' follows the story of Thomas Kent, a convict that escaped from Sarah Island and had the Pieman River named after him, that being the place of his recapture. Thomas Kent was sentenced to transportation to Tasmania after using human flesh in his bakery in Southampton. The Dead Maggies have brought this story, and many other stories of Tasmania's oppressive past to life through 'Well Hanged'.

Check out the film clip below.

The Dead Maggies are currently touring around Australia, with gigs in QLD, VIC and TAS this April:

2016-04-08 FREE DOWNLOAD - THE DEAD MAGGIES "Sing About Dead People" (2014 Reissue)

IT'S THE DEAD MAGGIES BIRTHDAY HERE HAVE A PRESENT!!!

Yep, The Dead Maggies are giving you free stuff as a celebration of three years since the iron lady bit the dust. You have to read to the end to get the free stuff...

First, you probably know they are busy touring, QLD next week, then VIC the following week and TAS the week after. NSW is an obvious omission... Well don't worry NSW The Dead Maggies will be in you for a long time. They are packing themselves, their tents, their partners, their dogs, their babies and their instruments into some cars and making a pilgrimage to escape the Tasmanian winter. The Dead Maggies  are booked for Psyfari festival on the Friday 26th August with The Bennies and The Porkers there (3h west of Sydney?), and their plan is to hang around NSW gigging for the 3 or 4 weeks leading up to that, effectively most of August they will be gigging around NSW.

Cool.

So lots of NSW gigs to book, lots of NSW gigs to play, lots of NSW fun to have, and a great festival to cap it off.

So the free stuff...

Their first CD, the mini-album 'Sing About Dead People' sold out a few months ago, and they're not going to bother repressing it again. So that's it, you can't buy a physical CD of it anymore.

But, instead The Dead Maggies are putting it up for free download on bandcamp. Yep, it's free, so go and download some of their older material, for free! 7 songs, 8 locations and 140 deaths, all for free. It was album of the week on Edge Radio and ABC936 back in 2013, and had two tracks played on Triple J.

REVIEW - THE DEAD MAGGIES "Well Hanged" (2015)

The Dead Maggies "Well Hanged" Folk til Ya Punk
Release date: November 13th, 2015
Running time: 44:35, 12 tracks

The Dead Maggies play their own brand of folk punk christened as Tasmanian Convict Punk. “Well Hanged” is their debut album after a 7 track mini-album released in 2014. The band has got rave reviews thanks to their fresh approach and their lyrics based on the hidden Tasmanian history. The current incarnation of the band is Hannah Morrell (fiddle, backing vocals), Gareth Davis aka GT Mongrel (guitar, clarinet, vocals), Matthew Bicket (drums, backing vocals), Mark Downie aka MD (double bass, vocals) and Alex Carey (banjo, backing vocals).

Well Hanged” first track is titled “Black Mary” and it was chosen as second single from the album (video here). Following the band’s info, “The Mary in question is Mary Cockerill, who along with her partner Michael Howe controlled an army of one hundred bushrangers in the wilds of 1810s Tasmania. When The Dead Maggies found her story, they knew it needed telling. “It’s a tale of oppression, torture, escape, rebellion, revolution and loss,” says bassist Mark Downie. “We wanted to portray the oppression and demons that haunted Mary in her final moments.” “ Brilliant song  based on fiddle, banjo and double bass sounds and angry vocals.

The following number, "Tommy Pieman” tells the tale of a guy "accused of baking human flesh into pastry". Musically there is a slight Flogging Molly twist, but the clarinet and the double bass push the song on a different direction. Another highlight.

Track no. 3 is called “Matthew Brady” (“Bushranger, ladies-man & revolutionary”): haunting fiddle and banjo and epic vocals.

On “Mary McLauchlan” the clarinet takes the lead and accordion can be heard.

The Dead Maggies keep on digging on their Aussie-billy with the American influenced number “Billy Hunt”.

Jorgen Jorgenson” was the first single off the album: “Viking, pirate, king, drunkard” (video here). Upbeat song and one of the album’s best tracks.

The following number is “Ghost on the Hellfire Bluff” and the approach  reminds me of The MahonesShake Hands with the Devil”, but wilder.

Tim Miner” runs in a quieter mood, but before the end The Dead Maggies speed up the tempo. Great balance of banjo, fiddle and accordion.

Snakebite” is a sort of an instrumental (there are some vocals at the end), a short number in a jazzy vein.

The Truckdriver’s Last Waltz” begins slowly, but it has its faster moments. A song that The South Shore Ramblers fans will love.

The Dead Maggies musically re-visit the USA with “Savage River Mine”. The album is closed by “Bound in Chains”, excellent number on which uileann pipes are played.

As you can see on the pic, “Well Hanged” comes in a digipack. The album has been released through Folk ‘Til Ya Punk Records, a new label formed by The Dead Maggies and their friends. A lot of members of The Dead Maggies family are listed as guests: former member Burnie played accordion / keyboards, Ryan Garth added some uilleann pipes, low whistle and harmonica and Lucy de Vreeze , Dominic Francis and The Tarkine Commotion Choir sang on "Well Hanged" too.

It’s true. The Dead Maggies have created their own folk-punk genre: no covers, own songs about their local “heroes”, own instrumentation .... I was not used to the clarinet sound on folk-punk, but little by little the album is growing on me. So, first go to London Celtic Punks e-zine to read their album review  and then go to the Folk ‘Til Ya Punk Records store and grab a copy.

Tracklist:

VIDEO - THE DEAD MAGGIES "Jørgen Jørgenson"

The Dead Maggies' new single matches their raucous folk-punk with a tale of the improbable yet true Jørgen Jørgenson. A pirate, a convict, a king and a drunkard, the title character is the perfect foil for The Dead Maggies' mix of foot-stomping folk and hollering punk antics.

A little-known legend, Danish-born Jørgenson once ruled Iceland for 50 days, and spent his final 14 years in Tasmania. When it came time to shoot the video for the single, the venue was clear: the Yukon, a fully restored Danish tall ship. “He was an adventurer who wrote his own legends while drinking, gambling, spying and pirating,” says vocalist/guitarist GT Mongrel. “He took on armies. He took on whole countries. He faced the executioners block and survived. He lived life as hard as life can be lived. He was a punk.”

The single is the first taste from The Dead Maggies’ forthcoming debut album Well Hanged, due for release on November on Folk ’Til Ya Punk Records. The album will feature Jørgen Jørgenson alongside 11 other tales culled from the dark and oppressive past of Australia’s southern penal colony, all set to music that finds the common energy, melody and attitude of folk and punk.

Formed in 2013 shortly after Margaret Thatcher’s death, The Dead Maggies are a new take on the melding of folk and punk, finding the common threads of story, energy and attitude between the two that ABC Radio Hobart has called “their own genre: Tasmanian convict punk.”
