After a long hiatus, The Dreadnoughts came back in 2017 with their most ambitious album to date. “Foreign Skies” is a concept album about the First World War. At the rear of the digipack there is no standard track listing, but three acts: Act I, tracks from 1 to 5, Act II, tracks from 6 to 8 and Act III, tracks from 9 to 12.

My fave numbers belong to Act I, which is also the longest one. “Up High” is an excellent song with a British folk rock twist. “Foreign Skies” is The Dreadnoughts at its best: Ramones echoes at the beginning, fast paced accordion, woahs’s on the backing vocals, circus music, Eastern Europe sounds … and even a dash of Queen. “Daughters of the Sun” is a song about the sufraggettes. Fiddle and accordion punk with hey shouts and more gypsy touches. The next track is the polka on the album, “Amiens Polka”, while “The Bay of Suvla” is badass anti-war song. I love that a cappella shanty. However, there is a mistake on the liner notes: Ewan MacColl didn’t write “And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda”. Scottish Australian folk singer-songwriter Eric Bogle wrote that song, together with other brilliant anti-war numbers such as “The Green Fields of France (No Man’s Land)” and “All the Fine Young Men”.

Act II is probably the most “punk” of the three, with cuts like “Anna Maria” and “Jericho”. “Black and White” gets a classic Dreadnoughts treatment and it’s one of the highlights on the album.

The last act kicks off with “Gavrilo”, an upbeat Balkan song featuring horns. It’s followed by the quieter song on “Foreign Skies”: “A Broken World”, a piano number where guest Zoey Exley recites the words. The album is over with a couple of standout songs: “Black Letters” and “Back Home in Bristol”. The former gets a folkier treatment, while the later showcases The Dreadnoughts cider-punk.

“Foreign Skies” was released last November 10, but a second album called “Foreign Skies.B-Sides” was issued last January 10. That digital only album includes "4 songs that weren't good enough to make "Foreign Skies"! But, ya know, they're still pretty good".

THE DREADNOUGHTS - BOOK AND VIDEO

"I'm not sure if you've heard yet, but recently a book and a video based around Vancouver's polka-klezmer-celtic-cider-folk-punk band The Dreadnoughts were released.

The book is called This Place Is Awesome and it's the story of survival in the face of overwhelming amounts of cider. I wrote it after spending a week with them touring Britain on their first European tour. Half of it is stories of trying to survive in that travelling booze circus, and the other half is photographic evidence. There are more details about it at

The video was shot during a week in Poland in July of this year and it's for the songs Polka Never Dies. It answers the burning question "how long do you have to wait before you see one of the band members get set on fire?" (the answer, in this case, is about two and a half minutes).

Dreadnought Hiatus

Dearest friends, fans, and assorted dirty rotten little bastards all over the world,

Since forming in 2007, this band has made 5 recordings, played close to 400 shows, toured to 22 wonderful countries and Belgium, and even got on the radio once. It has been, all things considered, one hell of a ride. But we're here to announce that as of right now we're going to seriously scale back our show schedule (from 140 shows per year to like, maybe twelve). Also, "Uncle Touchy Goes To College" will probably be our last recording.

There is, unfortunately for you gossip queens, nothing very dramatic about it. With all due respect to the "old guys" in the rock/punk world, we'd rather not end up like them.

Let us explain: we've seen older, more famous punk bands fill 2,000-person halls all over Europe then paint houses 6 months of the year just to make ends meet. We've seen A-list Epitaph-signed bands who are so sick and tired of touring that their live shows are almost a joke. But they gotta tour, or they (and their kids) don't eat. We've seen countless older guys in the industry--managers, musicians, promoters or what have you--who no longer give a shit about music and who would literally not be able to make it through each year without cocaine. "Living the dream", they call it.

So we're each off to get educations or start jobs or explore the world on our own, and trust us, there is absolutely nothing sad about that.

First, we're extremely proud of the music we've made and we think that it stands as something that is both (1) true to its roots, and (2) hopefully somewhat unique. If one band out there has been inspired to do things just a little bit differently because of us, we're fairly happy with that.

Second, music has given us a chance to see places we would never have dreamed of seeing. Eastern Poland, Western England and Chicoutimi, Quebec have become new homes for us all. We've seen the Kremlin and the Ukraine and Barcelona and Porto, been stuck in crazy latino-only American polka bars and slept at the top of colossal mountains in the Swiss alps. Not too shabby, eh.

Third, we have met the most incredible people and made lifelong friends on our various adventures. If we tried to name you all we would never be finished.

Anyway, we do have one major regret we'd like to mention. As of 2009, we started trying to do the "building" thing. We toured internationally, built our reputation and got to play for lots more people, but in order to try to get some stupid contract with some Canadian booking agent, we basically stopped playing Vancouver. The idea is that if you play one big show in your home city per year, you can fill a huge hall and the fucking big-fish booking agents get impressed.

We've had a few people complain about this to us, and they were right to. Vancouver wasn't just our home city, the place we cut our musical teeth, it was where we got that first "push" to get bigger in the first place. Our friends and fans at home supported us like crazy but we basically abandoned them in order to try to get a booking contract that never materialized, probably because we didn't pretend to be Irish. (Trust me, really, if we'd pretended to be Irish I fucking guarantee you that this particular agency would have signed us.) That sucked, and we're sorry, Vancouver. Um... it won't happen again?

Anyway: One reason folk and punk go so well together is that each of them is about community. A "scene" is just a community of friends, and the whole idea of folk music (and punk music) is that performances should be friends playing for friends. There are no rock stars, no egos, no fucking "images" and no-one is better than anyone else. Even if we joked around and occasionally pretended to be rock stars, we hope all of you knew that we're just your friends who happen to know how to play polkas very fast. That's it.

We'll probably play a few more shows here and there, and no-one knows for sure what the future will hold, but this Polka-punk train is gonna sit in the station for a while. We have a few more things to say about our time in "the biz", and we'll post them in the next couple of days. "

"The Dreadnoughts are a 5-piece folk-punk band from Vancouver. The band combines a wide range of European folk music with modern street punk.

The Dreadnoughts formed in 2007 in the Downtown Eastside area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Noticeable influences in their sound include acts such as The Pogues, Gogol Bordello, Goran Bregovic, and Rancid. The band commonly record and perform Sea Shanties, polkas and klezmer songs, and are also strongly influenced by English West Country folk music. THE DREADNOUGHTS IN AMIENS (FRANCE)

At the beginning of March I got an e-mail from a French e-friend telling me about his project:

REVIEW: THE DREADNOUGHTS "POLKA'S NOT DEAD" (2010)

The Dreadnoughts, those ballsy balladeers of Vancouver City are returned for this, "Polka’s Not Dead", arriving hot on the heels of 2009’s "Victory Square".

For those unaware of The Dreadnoughts, the band emerged from the ashes of Siobhan in earnest with their 2007 release, "Legends Never Die". Leaving that band’s primarily Celtic shores and traveling seaward, The Dreadnoughts’ sound encompassed more of a sea shanties and nautical feel to it, while still maintaining an Irish/Celtic punk feel.

As the band sailed on, their styles shifted with the trade winds, until this, their third and most recent full-length release, "Polka’s Not Dead," which sees the captain’s lay of the tracks to have distinctly Eastern European leanings: gypsy fiddle tunes, and not surprisingly, Polish, (the title of the album is “Polka’s Not Dead,” after all!)

Oh, the shanties are still there, rest assured, (Randy Dandy Oh,) nestled neatly among the hyper-kinetic Gypsy-styled fiddle workouts, (Goblin Humppa,) a Celtic track reminiscent of the band’s earlier material, (Black Sea Gale,) and a blatant punk-polka track, (Polka Never Dies.) The other nine tracks are a little harder to pigeon hole, containing two or more elements of the above styles, (such as my personal fave, Turbo Island, with its great and immediately catchy chorus,) all stirred up nicely and served at a pace whirling somewhere between dervish and maelstrom.

The Dreadnoughts still come armed with their full arsenal of fiddle, tin whistle, mandolin, guitar, bass, drums, and a pervasive accordion buoying the distinctive and powerful vocals of the band’s singer, (currently listed on their MySpace page as “Uncle Touchy.”)

The Dreadnoughts are not a band whose name can be used in the same sentence as the word “predictable,” (except as in contrast, like I did just there!) as they continue to blur the lines between their ethnic influences. And “safe” seems to be the one way they don’t play it.

I do find myself wondering, though, is Polka’s Not Dead’s Eastern European-influence blended sound the band’s destination, or just another port of call? After all, the band does seem to be forcing an evolution of itself, but in the process creating a shipload of great tunes along the way!

BOOTLEG - SIÒBHAN

These tracks have been circulating at some P2P networks under the name "Unreleased", "Demos & Live", "Rarities Live", etc. It seems that the live tracks were recorded at the Horseshoe.

As you probably know, Siòbhan was a Celtic punk band from Canada fronted by Nick Smyth (a.k.a. Ol' Jimmy) who is now the frontman of The Dreadnoughts. The band released one EP, "McGravy's Iron Liver"(2001), and two albums, "The Patron Saints of Debauchery" (2002) and "Welfare State" (2004) . The last one is still available at CDbaby.

DRINK HUNTERS - New Song at MySpace

Drink Hunters is a brand new Celtic Punk Rock band from Barcelona. However, they have already played this Summer with The Dreanoughts and The Real McKenzies. The line-up is as follows:

Raja: guitar
Nando: fiddle
Pau: drums
Aaron: bass, vocals
