2016-07-13 ALBUM REVIEW - SIR REG "Modern Day Disgrace" (2016)

SIR REG "Modern Day Disgrace" Gain Sony Music
Release date: June 17, 2016
Running time: 35:46, 11 tracks

In August 2014 Sir Reg signed with a new label linked to Sony, Gain Music Entertainment. Every band’s album had been chosen The Best album for Celtic Rock & Punk for 2010, 2011 and 2013 by Paddy Rock Radio. They had a huge following, even if some people felt that they were the teacher’s pet. When their third album, “21st Century Loser” was out, it got more positives than negative reviews, but it was obvious that the Swedish band had chosen to push forward on their Britpop influences and their polished sound. Some people have gone (Erik Dahlqvist, the charismatic drummer) and some members have arrived (Filip Burgman on mandolin and Tommie Fagerberg on drums). So I guess that everybody was interested in listening to the new Sir Reg’s album: a step forward or a comeback to their origins?

Brendan and his bandmates have chosen a sort of compromise. There are kick-ass Celtic punk anthems like the opener “End of The Line”, “Boys of St. Pauli” (the “Drink Up Ye Sinners” of this album) and “Breaking Down All Borders” (the “Til the Dead Come Alive” on this album). There are also some fast-paced songs with some Britpop arrangements, for instance “Drinking Like a Dane” and “All Saint’s Days”, and there are some proper Britpop gems like “Johnny” and “Won’t Let You Cry”. But the new addition to the mix is an Irish ballad in The Dubliners vein, the brilliant “The Wrong Bar”.

For Sir Reg, Celtic punk/rock and Britpop are not separate worlds. The band has been able to create its own sound and, using the title of one of their songs, they break down all borders and shift softly from one genre to the other. Moreover, some of their most “punk” lyrics can be heard on the Britpop numbers.

Competition is tough and probably “Modern Day Disgrace” won’t be the best album of the genre in 2016. However, it will be at the top of all the lists at the end of the year. Highly recommendable album.

Tracklist:

01 - End of the Line 3:35
02 - Boys of St. Pauli 2:54
03 - Drinking Like a Dane 3:48
04 - Fake Hero 3:55
05 - All Saints' Day 3:24
06 - Interlude 0:15
07 - The Wrong Bar 2:19
08 - Johnny 3:21

THE BEST CELTIC PUNK/ROCK ALBUMS LIST OF 2013

This is the list of the best Celtic punk-rock albums of 2013.

Some remarks:

1) Even if this post is titled as “the best of”, this is not  a competition, but a sort of a game. I prefer to say that, IMHO,  this is the list of the most enjoyable albums of 2013.

2) Please remember that it’s a list of albums, not a list of bands.

3) I always intend to push new bands. However, I feel that the best album is The Tossers "The Emerald City" and even if they are an old (an essential) band, they deserve it.

4) I have rated only the albums that have been received for review purposes and/or that have been shared for free by the bands. Albums on streaming have not been rated.

5) Live albums have not been taken into account.

6) Albums without original songs (that is, covers albums) have not been taken into account

7) "Best of" or compilations have not been taken into account, since they are old material.

8) Unfortunately I have not been able to rate some albums that could have made the list, since a copy never arrived :-(

9) Nevertheless, I'm very happy with the list. It's been extremely difficult to rate the albums, because most of them were very good. In order to decide the final order I have had to take into account different things: original songs,  covers, production, packaging, artwork, liner notes, credits ... In fact, an album is more than a collection of songs.

10) This is really a global Celtic punk/rock albums list. There are albums sung in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Czech and Polish.

11) I intended to post a Top25, but then a lot of excellent albums wouldn't be on the list. So I have decided to extend the list to 35 albums.

This is the final list: 35 albums from all over the world:

23 from Europe (5 from the UK, 4 from Spain,  2 from the Czech Republic, 2 from Germany, 2 from Hungary, 2 from Switzerland, 1 from Belgium, 1 from France,
1 from The Netherlands, 1 from Poland, 1 from Sweden, 1 from Ukraine)
11 from North America (8 from the USA and 3 from Canada)
1 from Asia (Indonesia)

Reviews of 13Krauss "Seguir en pie" and The Tosspints "Have You Been Drinking" will be posted soon. Stay tuned!

SPECIAL MENTIONS:

Some interesting albums have not been rated. They are also Celtic rock albums but not so raucous. Anyway, they are fantastic albums:

Dravra's Wave "The Witches Recall" Review
The Fenians  "Take Me Home" Review
The Indulgers "Whiskey Tonight" Review

As I have previously said, no best-of/compilations albums have been rated. But, if I were you, I would download The Sunday Punchers "High Tides and B Sides", since it's a kick-ass album

I would like to thank ALL the bands for sending/sharing their music, and specially The Cloves and The Tobacco and Brutus' Daughters for mentioning Celtic Folk Punk and More on their albums liner notes. And obviously all the fans that have sent their leads and heads-up! about new albums. You know who you are.

Finally, a special THANK YOU to Beau from Lexington Field, for their support to every single Celtic punk/rock E-zine and podcast and to all the scene. Thank you Beau for making things easier to the people who write/talk about this kind of bands.

VIDEO - SIR REG "'Till the Dead Come Alive"

Sir Reg ´Til The Dead Come Alive

REVIEW - SIR REG "21st Century Loser" (2012)

SIR REG "21st Century Loser" Heptown Records HTR066 CD/HTR222 LP
Release date: 5 April 2013
Running time: 42:36, 12 tracks

When I got SIR REG’s single “ ‘Till the Dead Come Alive” my first impression was that the sound was a little bit harder than that of their previous albums. Then the album arrived and, even if the first song was pure anger, I felt that there were too many quiet moments on the CD. I don’t know why I drew that conclusion, since there are only 3 and a half “slow” songs.

I have been listening to this album continuously and I must admit that it has grown on me. No, “21st Century Loser” is not a direct album. One needs several hearings to appreciate it. Perhaps the best word to describe this CD would be risky. The Swedish band has evolved and maybe a part of their fan base, those who prefer basic Celtic punk to new musical directions, could be disappointed. Anyway, as far as I know, “21st Century Loser” has got rave reviews so far.

All the tracks on this album have the SIR REG DNA on it. I have said that they have evolved, but don’t expect something like Flogging MollySpeed of Darkness”.  Brendan and his band mates have followed a logical direction remaining faithful to their identity. They have chosen “ ‘Till the Dead Come Alive” as first single. Other bands would have picked up “Raise Your Hands” or “We’ll Rise Again”. Those numbers are catchy, “simple” and effective. But SIR REG know that when you want to win, you have to bet.

The arrangements and chorus, poppier than on previous releases, highlight all over the album. This is not something new, since Brit-pop elements can be listened on both “Sir Reg” and “A Sign of the Times”.  The first part of “At the End of The World” could be filed together with the LevellersHello Pig” album.  And “Walking into Doors” is a haunting song. I was missing a song like “Far Away” when I realized that in fact there was something better. I feel that the Gallagher brothers  from Oasis would love it too. “City of Tragedy” is a poignant ballad. Sometimes I link it with those metal bands from the 80’s (for instance, Scorpions). However, knowing that Brendan is a big fan of David Bowie, I guess that this, together with the closing number “21st Century Loser Part II”, could be influenced by the Chameleon.

But if you are at the Celtic punk end, don’t worry: there are plenty to choose from: “All that Remains”, “21st Century Loser”,  “Emigrate”, the single, “Raise your Hands” and “We’ll Rise Again”.

As far as the lyrics are concerned, Brendan has pushed forward on social issues. I would say that the lyrics on this album and Henning Mankell’s crime books are the two sides of a coin. The fall of the Welfare State is present on every Wallander enquiry. Brendan is not as raw as Mankell, but, in the end, they are talking about the same subjects.

21st Century Loser” is already a critically acclaimed album. Now it's time for the fans to decide if they support the evolution of the band.

Tracklist:

01. Emigrate 4:06
02. Raise Your Hand 2:28
03. ‘Til the Dead Come Alive 3.06
04. At the End of the world 3:43
05. Walking into Doors 5:00
06. Banquet for Dreamers 2:50
07. 21st Century Loser 2:56
08. Live for Today 3:45
09. City of Tragedy 5:40
10. All that Remains 3:45
11. We’ll Rise Again 3:53

SIR REG - NEW SINGLE OUT

Here’s the new single from SIR REGDublin City”, taken from last year's well nominated album “A Sign of the Times” on Heptown Records.

The single, up to now has just been available in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia but is now available Worldwide.

With the song sung by an Irishman and backed by fantastic Swedish musicians,
Dubliner Brendan Sheehy and his companions certainly know how to challenge the listener's ear.

SIR REG will be releasing their third studio album "21st Century Loser" in February 2013 on Heptown Records.

This album continues on from where the previous releases left off and observantly addresses the important and relevant issues in today's unpredictable society.

"Dublin City" is a song inspired by the most magical, friendly, tragic and proud City there is.

SIR REG singer Brendan tells of what it's like to wake up one morning and reminisce about the most important time in his life, his childhood and teenage years and how it shaped him into the man he sees in the mirror every day.

From the fields of Blanchardstown to Hill 16 in Croke Park, from Bruxelles of Harry Street to the ringing of the church bells and the bustling Sunday markets in Finglas, all fond memories stored away and opened when he needs reminding of who he is.

REVIEW - SIR REG "A Sign of the Times" Heptown Records HTR057 (2011)

SIR REG "A Sign of the Times" Heptown Records HTR057 (2011)
Release date. November 25th, 2011
Running time: 42:07, 11 tracks

We have had to wait till the end of the year to get the new album by SIR REG. The Swedish band fronted by an Irishman was the great surprise of 2011. So I guess that every single Celtic punk fan was awaiting “A Sign of the Times” .

In fact, I was talking with a friend last week end and he asked me ”Is the new SIR REG CD really so good? Come on, I know you’re a fan, but try to find a weak point. “ I must admit that it has been impossible to find any. Maybe the two catchy songs that I love,“Living on the Moon” and “Frustration” , are close to “Drink Up Ya Sinners”, but not so good.

Apart from that, the album is perfect. The boys have been able to meet all the expectations and the guest musicians have made a fantastic contribution to the sound of the band. All the songs are excellent: between the opening track (an energetic song) to the last song ( a nice ballad) one can listen to Celtic punk numbers (“Dying to Rebel”, “Bolloxology”, “Living on the Moon”, “Frustation”) metal influenced songs ("This Country’s For Sale”, “I’ll Leave for New York”), Celtic pop-rock (“How the Hell Can You Sleep”, “Ah Just Leave Me Alone”) and an awesome ballad that I feel that Christy Moore is going to sing soon ("Far Away").

Which should be the next stop? A USA tour. This band deserves to be heard worldwide.

Several years of playing the music they love, travelling around every possible corner of the world, both by themselves and with bigger acts such as The Misfits ( European Invasion Tour 2010 ) have made them into one of the popular Celtic/Folk/Punk bandsnof today. Here are two announcements;

BEST OF CELTIC ROCK & PUNK FOR 2010
#1 – SIR REG – s/t CD

The band's sound is not so far from popular bands such as Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly and The Pogues.

SIR REG's latest tour of Denmark, Germany & France in May, was a great success and spread the word further through Europe ...

After that tour it was time for SIR REG to make a brand new release. A handful of restless souls stepped into the studio for the recording of their second album.

On the 14th of October 2011 the album will, through Heptown Records, have a world wide release and the never ending hunger of
travelling the world is about to begin...

Now is the time to take it all to a whole new level,

SIR REG - NEWS JUNE 2011

"After many sleepless nights I, Palle, have decided to leave SIR REG. There are other priorities in my life atm such as family (2nd baby in July), personal economy, work and other music projects.

The timing is a bit weird, as we are in the middle of recording a superb album, planning int. tours, etc. I wish there were more time to do all of this and I will certainly regret my decision (already have).

As I've said to the other members, I can play the only show we have booked as of now at Ingbofestivalen, August 13th. After that I will stand in the crowd as a fan.

SIR REG is an awesome band and I wish them all success. It's sad to leave such a kick-ass band. Thank you guys/girl for all the good times!

To everyone who have been to our shows, supported us and liked our songs - Sláinte!

Palle, guitar and backing vocals"
