REVIEW - THE STUBBY SHILLELAGHS " Celtic American" (2013)

The Stubby Shillelaghs are back with their most ambitious work to date, the 16 track album “Celtic American”. Blending Irish and Scottish influences with American culture, the lads have found their own place among the balladeers. Apart from original members Ryan, Shaughnessy and Andy, there is a new fiddler (Eric Fisher) and a girl (Megan T) has guested on vocals on several tracks: “Caledonia”, “Gotham's Finest” and a "Question of Heaven”. As The Stubby Shillilaghs are aware that they're mainly a live act, they have tried to create that live atmosphere on the album by adding some jokes/spoken tracks/commercials such as “Who Told You Could Talk”, “Civil War Bros” or “Give Me Back My Family”

My choices: “The Cash-Up”, a number blending  Johnny Cash (“Folsom Prison Blues”) and Dominic Behan (“The Auld Triangle”), the fine tune “The Stubby Shillelagh”,  Dougie Maclean’s song “Caledonia”, the Appalachian number “Corn Shuckin’ Time”, “The Blue Bollocks Blues” (obviously a Blues) and, above all, the closing number, the metal infused “A Question of Heaven” featuring female background vocals by Megan T and Kirsten Carpenter and kick-ass percussion.

REVIEW - THE STUBBY SHILLELAGHS - "Parental Advisory Live!" (2012)

I have noticed that normally when a reviewer writes  about a live album he is not happy with the final result: the listener cannot feel the atmosphere, the sound is artificial, there are too many overdubs … Usually I don’t have that problem.  And I guess that those reviewers won’t be disappointed with the 2CD live album by The Stubby Shillelaghs.

Is the sound “raw”? Sure. Can you hear the crowd? Yes, but they are not so annoying as on Great Big Sea “Road Rage” album. Is the chat between songs interesting? Of course, just have a look to the title, “Parental Advisory”.

The four guys from Colorado have recorded one of their Tuesday shows at Patrick's Irish Pub in Greeley. When you put the CDs on your player you can feel that you’re there too. The band is really tight, specially Andy on vocals and Jacie on fiddle. They have taken the spirit of the likes of The Dubliners, The Wolfe Tones and The Clancy Brothers and have added a great deal of their own ingredients to the mix. As a result, two well-balanced sets of Irish ballads, Scottish songs, drinking songs, comedy, some bluegrass and modern Celtic classics such as “The Jedi Drinking Song” (Dust Rhinos) or “The Scotman” (Mike Cross).

And that’s what makes this 2 CD set so special, the choice of the songs together with the self-penned material. Eight songs (“Unapolegitically Me”, “Club to the Pub”, “Mountain Rain”, “Corn Shucklin’ Time”, “Far Back When”, “To Those We Loved”, “The Vodka Song” an “Top o’the Morning Wood” ) written mainly by Shaugnessy McDaniel and amazing tune written by Jacquelyne McConnell ("Sgt. McConnell"). Without those numbers, the album would be one more among the only-listened-on.St Patrick’s CDs. Fortunately, this 2 CD set can be enjoyed all along the year. Well-done, Stubbies!

"The band began in 2010 when long-time friends Andrew Mithun, Ryan Knaub, and Shaughnessy McDaniel decided to start The Stubby Shillelaghs as a small side project. In October of 2010 "Patrick's Pub" owner Greg Farnsworth, looking for an act to play his Halloween show, took a chance on the as-yet unproven Stubbies. The result was a resounding success which led to the band's weekly show, "Stubby Tuesdays". After several months of these Stubby Tuesdays the band auditioned and recruited fiddle player Jacquelyn McConnell and the band was complete.

They recorded and released their first self-produced album "Stubbies Assemble!" on St. Patrick's Day of 2011. Following this there was an expansion into Denver and other parts of Colorado. The band has recently released their 2nd studio album "Whiskey Business" and their first live album "Parental Advisory Live!" and is looking forward to the many opportunities that have started to spring up around them."
