REVIEW - THE SCALLY CAP BRATS "Our Storied Past" (2015)

The Scally Cap Brats "Our Storied Past" Take a Shot Records
Release date: 31 March 2015
Runnning time: 37:55, 14 tracks

Our Storied Past”, The Scally Cap Brats second album, was released last March 31. The band from Ottawa have recorded 10 new tracks and re-recorded the 4 tracks from their previous effort, the “Don’t Look Back” EP. Regarding the music, The Scally Cap Brats remain faithful to the street punk and oi! sounds. Usually they are more Bishops Green and Harrington Saints than Booze & Glory and Gimp Fist if you know what I mean.

All the re-recorded tracks are shorter than the EP versions. My fave is “Barry Square”, which has got a new lease of life. “The Shiners War” also differs from their previous take (remember that the one on “Don’t Look Back” was an acoustic version)

There are a couple of numbers featuring bagpipes: tracks no. 6 “Take Me Away” and tracks no. 12 “Lonely Days & Drunken Night”. The former is an amazing song and the latter has a Dropkick Murphys twist. As you probably know, The Scally Cap Brats love Dropkick Murphys debut album “Do or Die”, so it’s normal to find another early Dropkick Murphys infused number: “No Matter What”.

So, which are IMHO the highlights on the album (together with “Barry Square” and “Take Me Away”)? “Going Down the Line”, an awesome North American oi! anthem, “Help Your Heroes”, a catchy street punk number à la Gimp Fist, the mandolin driven “18th to 21st” and the opening track “Our Storied Past”.

Our Storied Past” comes in a clear jewel case with lyric booklet, artwork by mandolin player Mike Franey. A vinyl version will be available in Summer 2015.

The Scally Cap Brats keep on evolving as a band and their latest album is a well-balanced collection of self-penned songs.

Tracklist:

VIDEO - THE SCALLY CAP BRATS "Our Storied Past"

The Scally Cap Brats second official music video, once again self-directed and completely DIY. The video is for the lead single and title track to their sophomore album "Our Storied Past" which will be released March 31st, 2015.

Song Lyrics:

Our Storied Past it makes us who we are
We have no regrets, just our memories and scars
If you sent us back again we'd it all the same
No time to second guess, no time to doubt the pain
We've lost a few friends as we've gone along the way
Made a few enemies but we're here to stay
After All this time and the roads we had to take
We're not going to quit after coming all this way

Chorus:

Our Storied Past, it makes us who we are
Our Storied Past, our memories and scars
Our Storied Past, We'd do it all the same
Our Storied Past, no time to doubt the pain
Our storied past, it makes us who we are
we have no regrets, just our memories and scars
If you sent us back again we'd do it all the same
No time to second guess, not time to doubt the pain

THE SCALLY CAP BRATS NEED YOUR HELP TO RELEASE THEIR NEW ALBUM

The Scally Cap Brats are a celtic punk/Oi! band from Ottawa, Ontario made up of five friends who love to make music. The band formed nearly four years ago and since then have shared the stage with many international touring acts and have toured on their own throughout Ontario and Quebec.

Their campaign is aimed at raising funds to press and release their newest album, "Our Storied Past". They've spent the last few weeks in the studio and they think this is the best collection of songs they've ever put together. Not only is this their best work, but this will be the first time they've ever release anything on vinyl.

By contributing to their campaign you will not only be buying yourself a quality record and exclusive merch, you will be helping them achieve the dream of seeing their music pressed on vinyl. They have long talked about the feeling of seeing their very own record spin on a turntable and you can make that a reality for them.

The album has been recorded, the artwork is ready. They just need YOU to make the rest happen.

The Scally Cap Brats "Don't Look Back"
Release date: 10 december 2013
Running time: 11:16, 4 tracks

Usually we have to wait around two years to get a new album from the band we love. Fortunately, some bands release EPs the year after having issued an album and then the wait is not too long. Canadian oi! and folk band The Scally Cap Brats have made our holidays happier than expected with their brand new EP "Don't Look Back": a couple of oi! anthems with amazing sing-along chorus ("Barry Square", "You Never Know"), a mandolin driven catchy song ("Dress Sharp, Drink Hard") and a back to basics folk-punk song ("The Shiner's War").

Remember that the physical copies are limited to 50, but digital copies can be bought from Bandcamp too. Go ahead and grab a copy!

1.Barry Square 02:30
2.You Never Know 2:14

REVIEW - THE SCALLY CAP BRATS "Let Us Drink, For We Must Die" (2012)

The Scally Cap Brats "Let Us Drink, For We Must Die" Take a Shot Records #001
Release date: September 14, 2012
Running time: 27:21, 12 tracks

Otawa’s finest band The Scally Cap Brats have just released their debut album: “Let Us Drink, For We Must Die”. Twelve honest Celtic punk-rock numbers with Oi! influences on an album that it’s said to be a sort of a tribute to their heroes, Dropkick Murphys.

The Scally Cap Brats were one of the best newcomers of 2011. The “Take a Shot” EP was highly appreciated by both fans and critics because of their back to basics sound and their high voltage energy. With a small line-up change (bassist Katherine Maziec left the band and was replaced by Danny DeVille), the guys recorded their debut album between February and March 2012 at Yogi’s Metalocker Studios in Ottawa.

All of the tracks are originals and 4 out of the 5 songs from the “Take a Shot” EP have been re-recorded. Yes, they have been re-recorded and they are shorter now. New arrangements, a better studio and better production have given a new lease of life to kick-ass songs like “The Scally Cap Brats” and “Take a Shot”.  But their classics tracks are not the core of the album.  The CD is really strong and well-balanced:  an amazing DKM sounding intro, a catchy tribute to the Boston influential band (“Let Us Drink, For We Must Die”), a pirate number à la McGillicuddys ("The Pirate’s Life”), an oi! anthem (“Barfly”) ….

The most important thing is that you get exactly what you expect. The lads state that their influences are Dropkick Murphys, The Street Dogs and The Mahones. Then you can be sure that you’ll hear those bands on the SCB songs.  They also say that “Do or Die” was pivotal to their formation. Then lyrics, attitude and line-up will confirm this. No frills. No fiddle, no pipes … just an excellent mandolin by Mike Farney (a.k.a. Mike Eff) and only a new addition (in fact a great addition), the tin whistle played by Mike on some tracks: “Introduction”, “Iron and Steel”.

To finish-up, some leads: “Whiskey, Beer and Cider”, a Mahones influenced chorus on an excellent song, and “Iron & Steel”, a song about the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway, acoustic guitar and tin whistle on a song musically influenced by the DKM’s “Blackout” era. Remember that both of them can be downloaded for free!!!

REVIEW - THE SCALLY CAP BRATS "Take a Shot" (2011)

The Scally Cap Brats “Take a Shot”
Self-released
Released date: December 12th, 2011
Running Time: 12:22, 5 tracks

The Scally Cap Brats are a young band from Metcalfe, Ontario, Canada. Mike Pusiak (guitar and vocals) Mike McWhiskey (mandolin and vocals) Katherine Maziec (bass and vocals) and Kevin Grace (drums and vocals) met in 2010 and they released some demo tracks in 2011. The band plays “a mix between old traditional folk songs and aggressive folk infused punk rock with an Oi! influence”

References to booze can be found on many tracks, but there are also interesting lyrics as those of track no. 3 about World War II. Regarding the music I would have avoided to record a track like “Drunken Sailor”. I feel that it’s the kind of track that is OK for a live show. However, I think that an EP by a new band should featured only self-penned songs and perhaps traditional songs that have not been covered by many Celtic punk bands (for instance, Stan RogersBarratt’s Privateers”. So, my faves are “The Scally Cap Brats”, a song influenced by The PoguesRed Roses for Me” era, and “Take a Shot”, an early Dropkick Murphys style song.

Anyway, The Scally Cap Brats have all the elements to become a band to follow: youth, attitude, Canadian heritage and a good mandolin sound like the early Mahones.

Tracklist:

01 – The Oath 2:15
02 – Drunken Sailor 2:10
03 – 1939 2:14
04 – Take a Shot 2:27
05 – The Scally Cap Brat 3:08

FREE DOWNLOAD: THE SCALLY CAP BRATS - Demos 2011

(From the band's Facebook)

"The Scally Cap Brats formed in the summer of 2010 out of a chance meeting between Mike Pusiak and Mike McWhiskey. They quickly discovered a mutual love for Punk, Oi and Celtic music which led to talk about starting a band. They got together in Mike Pusiak's basement, and quickly began writing songs and learning a few traditional tunes. Soon Kevin Grace was added on drums, and practices moved to his basement. A couple months passed before the lineup was complete with the addition of Katherine Maziec on bass.

Since their formation, The Scally Cap Brats have had one goal: To make honest music for regular people and have a fun time doing it. There are no gimmicks or theatrics, just a love for music and a desire to share that love with all who come to their shows. The influence of bands such as Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys is evident on songs such as "The Scally Cap Brat" and "Take a Shot" yet just as much appreciation is owed to the bands and artists of yesterday such as The Dubliners, Wolfe Tones, and Stan Rogers.

Mike Pusiak - Lead Vocals, Guitar, Banjo
Mike McWhiskey - Mandolin, Vocals
