Three Finger Shot are based in Calgary, but they are not from the Canadian prairies. Tony Ronalds (lead vocals) hails from Cape Breton and was the singer of Kilt, a band from Nova Scotia that released a couple of seminal albums in the late eighties, “Kilt” (1.997) and “Four in the Crib” (1.999). Trevor Bowering (rhythm guitar) is a Newfie from Kilbride and he met Tony in Ottawa after Kilt called it quits. Curiously, they met again some years later in Calgary, where both of them where living and working, and Three Finger Shot were born.

Their first work is a 6 track EP titled “Stories from a Small Town”. Three of the songs are country infused original numbers and the other three are a couple of traditional numbers and a cover of Kilt’s “Wrecker's Den”.

“We never Said” is the single, an excellent number à la Great Big Sea with a country twist. Trevor sings lead vocals, Anders Drerup guests on pedal steel guitar and Anna Ludlow on fiddle. A folk version of this song can be heard at the band’s soundcloud page.

“Small Town Stories” features the same guests and is sung by Tony. It’s slower than “We Never Said” and the country influences are more obvious.

The third country number is called “Tempting Fate”. Once again, Trevor makes a great job on lead vocals and Anders shines on pedal steel guitar.

“Wrecker’s Den” original version opened Kilt’s self-titled debut album. Three Finger Shot has given the song a new lease of life. Tony and Trevor deliver a fantastic rendition joined by Anna Ludlow on fiddle and Tyler Kealey on accordion. Tony also plays tin whistle on a song that gets a Spirit of the West treatment.

Finally, there are two traditional numbers. The first one is track no.2, the medley “Little Beggarman/Saint Anne’s”. Tony sings lead vocals and Anna and Tyler back him perfectly on the folk instruments. Saint Anne’s reel is a little bit short, but Anna Ludlow's Cape Breton style fiddling  is spotless.

The closing track is an a cappella cover of “General Taylor”, a song that Great Big Sea fans will enjoy.

Three Finger Shot is the latest addition to a great bunch of East Coast/Maritimes folk-rock bands. If you love The Stanfields, Craic the Lens, The Fourth Well or Ruckus the Luxe, then check out 3 Finger Shot.

Celtic Folk Punk and More has been looking for hidden gems for the last 7 years. And one of our fave places to find new interesting bands is Canada. During the last  years we have discovered the likes of Whiskey Wagon, Craic the Lens, The Fourth Well or River Jacks. Maybe they don’t belong to the straightforward Celtic punk /Celtic rock world, but given that we’re called Celtic Folk Punk AND MORE, there is always enough place for them at our e-zine.

The latest Canadian band that I’ve recently come across is Ruckus Deluxe. They are Cirque du Soleil lead singer Chad Oliver on acoustic guitar and Grammy® nominated violinist Ian Cameron on fiddle, electric guitar and mandolin.

As they have told me “We are based out of Whistler BC Canada, we are playing a style of music that's not really Celtic, not really country, not really folk, just a hybrid of each. We are kind of calling it "Cel-try", as much as we love bands like Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys etc...we could never seem to make it sound the same (as much as we tried) It turns out Merle Haggard and John Fogerty influenced us as well. “

“Crashing the Gate” is Ruckus de Luxe third album. What can I say? This album is a killer! You won’t find the usual pub standards among the 10 songs, but the Celtic spirit is stuck to the bone. The album kicks off with “Dragging Me Back Home”, a top-notch song with a Paperboys twist showcasing Ian’s fiddling.

Track no. 2 is titled “12 Pubs” and together with the previous number is one of my top5 songs on the album. Once again, the song features an infectious fiddle and great lead vocals by Chad. Celtic pop at its best.

On the mandolin driven “Who You Supposed to Be”, Ruckus de Luxe moves to the country territory. And they do it pretty well.

“The Line in the Sand” reminds me of The Hooters. The mandolin tune has a traditional feeling that Celtic fans will love.

“Drunk Most of the Time” is another standout and I’d file it together with The Swinish Multitude stuff. Kick-ass song.

“It’s Over” is catchy as hell, probably the best song on the album and a perfect song to sing along and dance. Just listen to the fiddle tune towards the end. Wonderful!!!

Track no. 7 is called “The Long Way Round”. The boys come back to the country territory with that addictive mandolin sound. It’s followed by “Strolling Around the World” another mandolin led song where Chad shines on lead vocals.

“Stumbling Home at Dawn” also rivals with The Paperboys and “Long Lost and Gone” is a live take of a country song. In fact, the guys have told me “We road tested these songs in front of live audiences before we recorded them. If it did not make people dance, or clap along in a live situation, it did not make the record.”

Do you like The Clumsy Lovers, The Paperboys or The Elders? Then you should grab a copy of Ruckus Deluxe “Crashing the Gate” straightaway. I’m sure that sooner or later these guys will be nominated for some Juno Awards. They deserve it.

The Lucky Trolls (thank you guys) passed our details to The Muddy States and they contacted us. They sent their "Urban Legends" EP and we have really enjoyed it. So, we have decided that The Muddy States, from the Liège province in Belgium, are our Band of August 2015.

The Muddy States were born in November 2013 from the ashes of a band playing Irish sessions. Johnny (guitar), Mary (fiddle) and Davey (bass) were the original members but it was not until May 2014 when Simon (drums) joined that they were really a full band.

In March 2015 they released their first EP "Urban Legends" five self-penned songs showcasing their love for country, Celtic, americana, blues and soul music.

The EP kicks off with "When I Was in Jail", an amazing number in The Wages of Sin vein.

The next number is called "Dead Corpse Lying". It goes slowly, but from time to time they speed up the tempo.

Track number three is a r'n'r number titled "Cocaine" where the rhythm section shines.

"Muddy State" is a briliant pop number with some Celtic influences. It has a pizzicato intro and vocals are shared by boy and girl. When one thinks that the song is over at 1:54, the music comes again. 

Finally, "A Drinking Song" is pub music at its best, a Dexy's Midnight Runners sounding number.

"Urban legends" has been produced by Georges Noisy Pride. The EP comes in a gatefold sleeve. The pictures have been taken from Lou & Tofke and the design has been made by Lolo.

Fans loving pub music and the likes of Johnny Cash and Steve Earle, grab a copy of this fantastic EP.

REVIEW - ONE EYED REILLY "Barstools & Gravestones" (2015)

Following this write-up, there were no Celtic rock bands in Sacramento before 2008. Fortunately, the situation is quite different in 2015 and there is a burgeoning scene in Northern California. BlackEyed Dempseys debut album was reviewed here and The Pikeys were featured on one of our samplers. But there are other interesting bands,  for instance Whiskey and Stitches and One Eyed Reilly.

One Eyed Reilly is Rick Meagher (lead vocals and acoustic guitar), St. John Fraser (fiddle, background and harmony vocals), Adrian Baxmeyer (bass, background and harmony vocals), Aaron Hendel (electric guitar) and Nick Carvajal (drums, percussion and harmony vocals). Their 12 track debut album “Hoist Your Glass” was released in 2013 and their second album titled “Barstools & Gravestones” has been released last month.

“Barstools & Gravestones” consists of 9 tracks written by Rick and arranged by the band and 4 covers: The Keltic Cowboys classic song “Kiss My Irish Ass”, The Dreadnoughts “Victoria Square”, The Charlie Daniels Band “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and the traditional ballad “Black Velvet Band”.

The title is really good, since most of the songs can be divided into “barstools” (“Beer in My Hand/Woman on My Mind”, “Trad Music Nightly") and “gravestones" (“Building a Tombstone”, “More than Six Feet”, “He Ended His Prayers with Amen”, “Celtic Cross” and “Nothing Left”). The lyrics are really top-notch and there are a lot of Irish themed numbers. But One Eyed Reilly are not a straightforward Celtic rock band, since there are a lot of American influences on their music. In fact they blend Irish and American music with an amazing fiddling and a great drummer

The songs that I’d pick up are “Beer in my Hand/Woman on my Mind” (an American flavoured number with a r’n’r twist in The Wages of Sin vein. Guest Hunter Merritt plays on banjo on this track), “More Than Six Feet” (a country song with superb lyrics featuring Pete Grant on pedal steel ), “Higher Hands” (the fast-paced number on the album) and their kick-ass rendition of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”, on which St. John Fraser plays fiddle and sings.

Other remarkable songs would be “He Ended His Prayers with Amen” (a song with a sound reminiscent of British folk rock band Steeleye Span), “The Ballad of Thomas Alan” (a number to be filed together with Shane MacGowan and The Popes “Mexican Funeral in Paris". Brian Manchen plays accordion, Pete Grant pedal steel and Hunter Merritt banjo), “Trad Music Nightly” (a number about a pub crawl in Dingle featuring the tune “Farewell to Ireland") and the cover of “Kiss My Irish Ass” (guest Pete Grant plays Celtic banjo on this track. Some lyrics have been changed).
 

Regarding the packaging, "Barstool & Gravestones" is delivered in an eight panel digipack. The lyrics to all the self-penned songs are included, together with the line-up, the guests and the credits.

One Eyed Reilly “Barstools & Gravestones” is a solid album with a well-balanced track list and an attractive approach that usually cannot be found in the Celtic rock scene. Great CD.

REVIEW - WHISKEY WAGON "Somewhere Under the Table" (2014)

Bands that stretch the boundaries of the genre are always welcome. And whiskey soaked bands with a raucous attitude are specially the bands that I enjoy. Whiskey Wagon,  the septet from Edmonton, Alberta (Canada), are one of these bands that I miss. After having released the vinyl single “Take Me Home” in 2007, Whiskey Wagon issued their debut album “Sex, Booze, Strings and Accordions” in 2010. I have been waiting for their sophomore release and finally I have got my reward in 2014: “Somewhere Under the Table”

The latest release by this Canadian outfit is a well-balanced album rooted in their North American beloved music. Is this a Celtic punk album? Not really. Is this a Folk punk album? Sure. “Somewhere Under the Table” showcases their frontman’s songwriting about losers and booze. That’s the essence of R’n’R and country music. The band has expanded from 6 members to 7 members and the result is a bunch of 14 songs on which trumpet, accordion, mandolin, upright bass  or harmonica can be heard.

I don’t know if Landon Barrowman has ever been drinking together with Shane MacGowan, but I guess that Shane is one of his inspirations when he writes his lyrics. Besides,  the shadow of The Pogues  can be felt all over the album, particularly on the trumpet arrangements. Songs such as “Grave”, “Family Store” and “Whiskey Tuesday” are catchy numbers that  can rival with those of The Pogues or Flogging Molly (especially the third one). They are kick-ass booze numbers to sing-a-long.  “Lindsey’s Gone” , “Wail” and “Scott Frolics Harmonica” are some fast-paced songs that (Celtic) folk punk fans will love too.  Apart from those songs, there are a couple of top-notch duets, the ballads  “Said You’d Love Me True” (written by Landon and Kristy Nanise) and “Jukebox” (written by Landon and Celeigh Cardinal). BTW,  an earlier version of “Said You’d Love Me True” can be found on the “AA Runaway” 3 track vinyl single that the band released in 2011. The single, whose cover is a tribute to The Clash “London Calling”,  can be bought from Bandcamp

Finally, one of my faves on the album is track no. 6, “She Dreams”. It’s a brilliant song about a girl that can be filed together with other master works such as The Men They Couldn’t Hang “Mary’s Present”, Levellers “Julie” or Oysterband “The Oxford Girl”.

Whiskey Wagon second album is delivered in a digipack enclosing a 12 page lyrics booklet. The lyrics to all of the songs and pictures of every band member are included. The design is similar to that of their previous album. That one was “black” and this one is “white”, but the fonts are the same. I have only found a small flaw. They have forgotten to state some of the credits and the line-up on the panel with the guy drinking  from his bottle of whiskey, as they did on their debut album.

“Somewhere under the Table” is a brilliant album from a Canadian band that sometimes sounds as if they were from the South of the USA. A highly recommendable album for those people who love Shane MacGowan, Johnny Cash or Tom Waits.

ROIO - STAGGERING CARDOONS "Live at Staggerfest IV"

"The Staggering Cardoons , Irish/Appalachian Rock with influences of punk and alt country.

The Staggering Cardoons got their beginning in the late months of summer and early fall of 2008 while several of the members were just hangin out and playing music on various decks throughout Morgantown, West Virginia. Erik Rieder, Mike Brown, Nathan Justice(former member) and Mike Crawford(former member) formed the band originally started the group when they looked to their friend Chris Herrington to step in and tryout his vocals and ended up being exactly what they needed. Not long after Brown missed several practices due to work and Chris's room mate John asked to sit in on bass and immediatly meshed with the group. Mike who was playing bass at the time moved to guitar and mandolin which eventually would become full time mandolin. After several years and multitudes of lineup changes including Sara Rieder-Bennett (Erik's sister/accordion) Nick Sickles(fiddle) and several drummers they found the guys that would complete their sound in Drummer Greg Lowley and accordion player Matt Godwin. The two have been with the band  since their first show which just happened to be the 2011 Staggerfest. The band recorded their first album late 2008 and released it in April of 2009 named "ThunderMug" and as mentioned before throw a local music festival called Staggerfest since 2010."

REVIEW - THE BROTHERS OF MOTHERSHOVEL "Lay Back and Think of Croydon" (2014)

The Brothers of Mothershovel hail from Croydon, South London. Their debut album, produced by Gavin at Rocket Studio, is titled “Lie Back and Think of Croydon”. Yes, they have put Croydon instead of England. The band that has recorded the album consisted of Brother Ad on harmonica and vocals, Brother Ja on bass, Brother Dan on guitar and vocals, Brother Yohann on fiddle, drums and heater and Cousin Gav  on organ on 'King Gooseberry' and drums on 'Cent Vingt'. Even if the title of the album is 100% British, the music comes from the other side of the pond: their stuff is a gumbo of blues, cajun and country influences. The Brothers of Mothershovel live in England, but their self-penned songs come directly from Louisiana and Tennessee.




 The highlights on the album would be “The Ballad of Dirk Van den Berg”, an instrumental on which fiddle plays the lead role; “Cent Vingt”, another instrumental based on harmonica and fiddle; “Can’t Catch Me”, a lively song; “Hovel Bop” an infectious number were the harmonica truly shines, and “Midnight Sunshine”.





 If you like the live music atmosphere (smoke, sweat, darkness, booze) with the swampy influence from the Southern states, try this.

REVIEW THE DEVIL'S REJECTS "13" (2013)

The Devil’s Rejects were featured on  our sampler from October 2010. Matt  Williams (lead vocals, guitar), Briony Ireland (accordion, keyboards) and Rick Hardy (bass) together with new members  Olie Rance (drums) and Chris Read (guitar) have evolved their sound to a “Bastardized country punk from the deepest, darkest reaches of south west England”. The Devil’s Rejects say that they are influenced by the likes of Social Distortion, Rancid, Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues, Flogging Molly and Gogol Bordello. And it’s clear that their music is an interesting blend of country, first wave of punk and Pogues. But I can hear influences or similarities to artists such as Wedding Parties Anything, The Whisky Priests or Billy Bragg too.

“13” has been released in 2013 and consists of 13 original compositions, one instrumental intro and 12 songs. There are no covers and that’s one of the strengths of this band, their confidence in their own identity. The songs are a little bit “rough at the edges”, but guitar work and accordion playing are really amazing. Matt’s lyrics are appealing and sometimes they  are a  darker version of Gary Miller (for instance, “The Man that I’ve Become” or “Rained So Hard”).

My fave numbers are the opening numbers, “Intro” and “Bunker Hill” (the instrumental is stuck to the song about the American Revolutionary War), “The Last Gang in Town” (this is not a Clash cover), “Ain’t It Lucky” (the most American number on the CD) and the closing track, “Sinful Maggie” (a song about an unrequited love). Other interesting tracks would be “When I’m Gone” with those keyboards à la The Stranglers and “The Churches”, with a “Hell’s Dirch” twist.

“13” is a labour of love by both The Devil's Rejects and their label Fuelled by Cider Records. The jewel  case includes an 8 page booklet featuring all the lyrics, credits and 8 pics that where shot during the recording sessions. The Devil’s Rejects  have created their own universe, a music world that Roughneck Riot and Smokey Bastard fans could appreciate.

Paddy McHugh is a young, talented and original singer songwriter from East Coast Australia.
