2019-02-28 FULL CONCERT - OYSTERBAND LIVE AT SHREWSBURY FOLK FESTIVAL 2017

One concert a day till next March 21. Concert of the day: Oysterband live at the Shrewsbury Folk Festival 2107: "When I'm Up I can't get Down", "Here's to You", "The Oxford Girl", "Native Son" ...

2019-02-28 FIVE HILLS OUT "THE SNUG SESSIONS" OUT SOON

5 Hills Out are a 5-piece folk-punk band of misfits from Derbyshire, determined to make their mark on the folk scene.  Inspired by the heritage and customs of folk and the aggression and energy of punk, 5 Hills Out combine traditional accordion, saxophone, guitars and mandola with a rocking rhythm section of fretless bass and drums.

The band generate a formidable sound scape set against their passionate and crafted shows. Stripped down acoustic arrangements, sit alongside driven punk anthems. This song variation and instrument swapping ability help give 5 Hills Out a great live edge.

Their sound and attitude is refreshing and shows their eclectic influences taken from the likes of The Levellers, X-Ray Spex, Richard Thompson, Stiff Little Fingers, New Model Army and Gogol Bordello.

The band have played extensive live shows around the Peak District, which enabled the self-released debut acoustic EP 'No Way In' in 2016, on all major download platforms and a limited-edition CD run. They released their second EP ‘Still Outside’ in Autumn 2017, which showed the bands diverse electric capabilities. Now the band are on the brink of releasing a double single in early 2019 called ‘The Snug Sessions’, which is their most accomplished writing and recording to date.

5 Hills Out are:

Ben Liverman: Guitar, Mandola & Vocals
Rebecca Liverman: Saxophone, Accordion & Vocals
Andy Gurney: Guitar, Mandola & Vocals
Dave Coxon: Bass Guitar & Vocals
Chris Clay: Drums & Percussion

The Snug Sessions’ will be the bands first release on their own label Culvert Collective Recordings. This builds on their debut acoustic EP ‘No Way In’ and their follow up EP ‘Still Outside’, which got the band nominated for best folk act 2018 on Radio Wigwam.

The band have never shied away from using their music to share their political and social views. In 2018 they took part in a protest march to protect a threatened local music venue and more recently shared and supported a campaign to protect the very same studio where they recorded.

The lyrics to the band’s latest offering reflect their concerns. Front man Ben explains about the two songs:

“Track one ‘Cogs’ is a rallying folk-punk belter which is aimed at a society that continues to undervalue and underpay its workers. We spent a lot of time on the arrangement which features a bass guitar solo before we all launch into a big tune section full of whistle, sax and mandolin all trading off each other”.

Track two ‘The Divide’ is all about sticking together through the current political unrest and climate of division.  Ben recently showcased ‘The Divide’ whilst on a business trip to Berlin, managing to play at a different venues on each of the six nights he was there. He reflects “Berlin was incredible, the music scene is so vibrant out there. I was a bit nervous about playing ‘The Divide’, but felt given the political past of the city, the song would resonate with listeners. It did, they absolutely loved it, each night everyone was joining in on the chorus about us all coming together”.

Preorder will be from 28th March with full release on the 12th April from all major download and streaming services.

VIDEO - LEVELLERS feat IMELDA MAY "What a Beautiful Day"

Imelda May's spine-tingling new version of Levellers' most recognisable hit; 'What A Beautiful Day', is the penultimate song in their current series of major artist collaborations.

The video features Imelda in the Levellers' Metway Studios, as well as footage from the band's own Beautiful Days Festival - please see short press release below for full info.

Veteran Folk rockers The Levellers have teamed up with the award-winning Irish Singer-songwriter Imelda May to record a fantastic new version of their iconic singalong Top 20 hit, 'What A Beautiful Day'.

The new version of this much-loved track - as popular on Football Terraces and at Wedding Discos as in venues and at festivals - is sung by Imelda and features the Levellers as her backing band. Recorded in the Levellers' Metway Studios in Brighton earlier this year, the video also features extensive live footage from their own Beautiful Days festival, which sold out this year for the twelth year in succession.

A strictly limited edition 7" vinyl version is being released on 15th September, and can be pre-ordered here:

What a Beautiful Day is the third track in a series of collaborations to be released by the Levellers as part of their forthcoming Greatest Hits album, released on September 29th. The album includes every single and video ever released by the band, and includes 20 chart hits.

Released on a variety of formats both physically and digitally, there is also a unique 'collectors edition' 149-track Digital Box set comprising virtually every Levellers track ever recorded, which will be available from iTunes for just £29.99.

All versions include the recent collaborations with Imelda May, Frank Turner, Billy Bragg and Bellowhead.

REVIEW - LENNON KELLY "s/t" (2012)

Lennon Kelly "s/t" Indiebox Music IBX032
Release date: December 24, 2012
Running time: 25:32, 7 tracks

Lennon Kelly is not an Irish artist, but a seven piece band hailing from Cesena, Italy. ”Perry” (accordion), “Bartowski” (vocals, acoustic guitar), “Cisti” (guitar, banjo), “Pobre” (bass), “Roman” (guitar, banjo, vocals), “Debbede” (drums) and “Circo” (fiddle, tin whistle) released this seven track mini-abum at the end of 2012. The seven songs and one instrumental cover different fields from Celtic punk to British folk rock and even American folk, together with some drops of Italian folk music.

IMHO, the instrumental intro, “Berthennin”, is the less interesting track on the mini-album. It’s followed by “Sette nodi”, a song based on the well-known “Morrison’s Jig”. “Motivo per restare” is another song that is based on a traditional tune, the Scottish jig “The Atholl Highlanders”. Both songs are quite good and self-penned songs based on traditional tunes is an approach that I really love. I expect that the guys keep on doing it, but I would appreciate that they featured other tunes that are not overexposed.

The core of the mini-album consists of 3 fantastic songs. “A ruota libera” is a kick-ass song with a British folk rock sound à la Little Johnny England that soon evolves into a folk-punk anthem with two singers. Brilliant fiddle and accordion along the song and electric guitar and tin whistle at the end are showcased on this song. The following number, “Venti3”, makes me think of The Clash Let’s Go Crazy”. Maybe it’s not so fast, but I love the Caribbean beat on this song. After that lively track, Lennon Kelly deliver the catchiest song on their self-titled mini-album: “Voglio il nome”. It begins with an amazing accordion intro that could come from the North of England or from Italy. Then, the tin whistle and the banjo join in and the two singers start to sing. The vocals approach is similar to that of Bizardunak (or even Dropkick Murphys).

To finish up, the guys blend different folk traditions on “L’altalena”, an awesome Johnny Cash infused song featuring banjo, accordion and fiddle. I also find a British folk rock twist on this song.

Regarding the packaging, it's a jewel case with a four page booklet. All the credits are stated, but no lyrics are provided. Anyway, the lyrics to every song can be found on YouTube.

Lennon Kelly are a band that is worth hearing. They write their own songs and forget about the usual pub standards. I’m looking forward to hearing their next recordings.

Tracklist:

01 - Berthennin 1:13
02 - Sette nodi 4:21
03 - A ruota libera 3:25
04 - Venti3 4:09
05 - Voglio il nome 4:09
06 - Motivo per restare 3:04
07 - L'altalena 5:07

OYSTERBAND - NEW RECORD WITH JUNE TABOR

Hi

We're proud to announce that our new album with June Tabor, "Ragged Kingdom", will be released by Topic Records in UK and world wide, and by Westpark Music in Western Europe, on Monday September 19.

Why with June? Because she is one of the greatest singers and interpreters of songs in England; because we performed a couple of songs together at fRoots Magazine's 30th birthday party at The Roundhouse in London last year, and felt the buzz of something special all over again; and because the mad idea of doing a follow-up album to 1990's "Freedom & Rain" 21 years later just appealed to us!

You can hear a track on Folk On 2 on BBC Radio 2 starting at 7.00pm (UK time) on Wednesday 22 June, or via the BBC's iPlayer at any time in the following 7 days at

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio/bbc_radio_two
