2017-10-04 EP REVIEW - SHAMROCKS "Ye Olde Chariot" (2017)

ShamRocks "Ye Olde Chariot"
Release date: September 5, 2017
Running time:17:44, 5 tracks

The Ukranian folk rock band ShamRocks has delivered a new EP titled "Ye Old Chariot". The lads from Kiev have decided to stay in their comfort zone and therefore most of the tracks are covers. The five tracks follow different directions; ShamRocks are a versatile band, but sometimes the results may differ.

I have enjoyed their rendition of KorpiklaaniViïnamen Mies / A Man with a Plan”. They have put Ukranian lyrics to the song and the new title is “Drunkard- Profligate”. The arrangements have a Fiddler’s Green attitude and they have changed the “Hey, Hey” by “Hop, Hop”. Anatoliy and Sergiy shine on fiddle and accordion.

Topor Polka” is another standout track. The band is really tight and the tune will pleased both Celtic rock fans and Scandinavian folk rock fans.

ShamRocks have put music to a W.B. Yeats poem on “Kiltartan Cross”. The final result is an excellent song with a Michael McGoldrick touch thanks to the whistles and flutes.

Those would be my fave cuts on the EP. “Roll the Old Chariot” is an interesting number too. ShamRocks follow the usual treatment: first an approach closer to the original shanty, and then a fast-paced electric approach.

The Ukrainian quintet always takes risk. I love that, but I must admit that I don’t like their industrial cover of “The Star of the Co. Down” titled “Der Stern der Grafschaft Daun” (in German and in Gothic characters)

On this EP ShamRocks have written the music for one of the songs and the lyrics for another one. I expect that next time the guys won’t be shy and include more self-penned stuff. They have proved that they are able to re-arrange songs in an innovative way. The next step would be more songwriting.

The “Ye Old Chariot” EP is available as a digital release on bandcamp

Track listing:

1 - Roll the Old Chariot 4:04
2 - Пияка-Гультяй 2:52
3 - Der Stern der Grafschaft Daun 3:43
4 - Topor Polka 3:29
5 - Kiltartan Cross 3:26

2017-02-22 ALBUM REVIEW AND FREE DOWNLOAD - O'HAMSTERS "Gde by my ni byvali" (2017)

O'Hamsters "Gde by my ni byvali"
Release date: February 21, 2017
Running time: 39:45, 14 Tracks

Plenty of new releases at the end of February-beginning of March. One of them is the brand new album by Kyiv’s finest band O’Hamsters. The Ukranian six-piece band has been delivering top-notch albums and EPs since 2010. So, their third album “Gde by my ny byvaly” is not an exception.

Istinnyy Irlandets (A True Irishman)” opens the album. This song was recently advanced by the band: kick-ass accordion, electric guitar and Anton’s rasp vocals.

The next number is titled “Winter Hill” and has a bluegrass intro, gang vocals and mandolin. Amazing song.

Madlen (Madeleine)” is track no. 3. A lively intro with a Flogging Molly twist, but O’Hamsters add the electric guitar and the growls to move away to their own accordion driven territory.

The following cut “Sluchay v Speze”  has a piano intro, but this is not a jazz club: the song bursts into a Celtic hardcore number. Accordion, whistle and electric guitar shift to a folkier end and then a little bit of ska is delivered before throwing more vocal energy by Anton and the gang.

Great mandolin and accordion intro for track no. 5, “Ugar”. Fast-paced Celtic-punk at its best.

Will You Come to the Bower”, a The Dubliners standard, gets the O‘Hamsters treatment on the title track “Gde by my ni byvali”. Amazing guitar work towards the end of the song

Khrani, Bozhe, ostrov Erin” features Vera Brenner on bagpipes. This song is in fact a Celtic punk rendition of “God Save Ireland”.

Track no. 8 is called “Batal'on Svyatogo Patrika (St. Patrick’s Battalion)”. O’Hamsters are able to deliver poignant songs too. Harmonica, electric guitar, mandolin and organ are showcased on this interesting song.

Strannyy soyuz (Strange Alliance)” is another standard, this time “The Rising of the Moon”. Apart from the accordion, the tin whistle and Anton’s vocals, O’Hamsters add some guitar work.

Cath Sulchuait” begins with tin whistle and percussion, but soon evolves into a Celtic punk number with some metal touches, gang vocals and a mandolin driven end.

High voltage too on track no. 11 “Ryzhiy Ayrish Boy (Auburn Irish)”. Even if there’s a short ska passage, the guitar leads the accordion and the tin whistle.

After all that energy, O’Hamsters calm down a little bit on the dancing tune “YA iz Konnakhta (I'm from Connaught)”. Fiddle is played by guest Anna Vasil’chenko from Ukranian band Kings & Beggars.

The album has come to its end, but O’Hamsters have thrown a couple of numbers as bonus tracks: the fast-paced anthem “Stakan (Glass)”, whose video was released at the end of 2015, and their cover of “The Sickbed of Cuchulainn” that was originally released on the Tribute to The Pogues album last year.

O’HamstersGde by my ny byvaly” would be probably a top10 album at the end of the year. O’Hamsters’ passion, musicianship and arrangements make them an essential band. Yes, they don’t sing in English. So what? IMHO, they are one of the hottest bands in the European scene.

2016-11-27 ALBUM REVIEW - SHAMROCKS "Captain's Log"

ShamRocks "Captain's Log"
Release date: November 17, 2016
Running time: 37:29, 10 tracks + 1 bonus track

ShamRocks are Anatoliy Khomenko (mandolin, fiddle), Sergiy Khudoliy (accordion, vocals), Alexey Sletkov (drums, vocals) , Serge Vdovychenko (bass, vocals) and  Andrew Yakovenko (guitar). They are not a new band: some of their videos were featured on Celtic Folk Punk and More in September 2012    and their rendition of The PoguesWildcats of Kilkenny” was included on the recent "Tribute to The Pogues" album. In fact, ShamRocks were founded in 2009 and they would predate other well-known Ukrainians bands such as O’Hamsters and Pint of Stout.

Captain’s Log” is their debut album. ShamRocks have put together the best songs from their first demo to the latest studio recordings and they have been mixed and re-mastered through analog tape. The result is what they call Stout Rock. Not really a new definition, as Texan band Blaggards are already using the Stout Rock label from their very beginning.

All of the songs on “Captain’s Log” are covers, some of them traditional standards. Anyway, the ShamRocks approach is really interesting, as the songs have been given an unusual treatment. The most enjoyable tracks, IMHO would be the following ones:

The Blood of Cuchulainn” (from the "Boondock Saints OST"). ShamRocks have taken an Irish folk gem and have arranged it in a Celtic Rock way. Lots of hey , hey shouts and fantastic performances by accordionist, tin whistler, guitar player and rhythm section.

Kaalifornipolkka”. The tune kicks-off with an acoustic feel, the drums come in peacefully and the accordion gets in too. Then a metal sounding electric guitar sets the pace for the accordion. Taking into account the title, I thought that this number could be inspired on Californian band Tempest polkas. However, taking into account that the "Mission Impossible theme" can be heard, maybe it’s linked to Californian biggest industry too.

Lord of the Dance”. The approach is more electric than folk. Cutthroat vocals remind me of O’Hamsters singer. It’s the first song on the album featuring trumpet. Badass cover à la Beastie Boys.

The Rising of the Moon”. ShamRocks have merged this Irish rebel song with the Sex Pistols anthem “Anarchy in the UK” and the final result is bloody brilliant.

Wild Unicorns of Kilkenny”. This song can be originally found on the "Tribute to The Pogues" album and it’s an amazing rendition. Slightly different from the original, but recognizable.

Other songs on “Captain’s Log" are also worth hearing:

Leaving of Liverpool” starts with acoustic guitar and some drums. It evolves into a rockabilly number that burst into a ska song.

The Wild Rover” differs from the usual covers. ShamRocks have followed an Icewagon Flu approach in order to deliver an enjoyable rendition.

Bully in the Alley” is another ska cover version where trumpet can be heard.

Molly Malone”. Electric guitar plays a big role , but this time it’s not a metal sound. Awesome track featuring accordion too.

I’ve been asked not to reveal the bonus track. I’ll only say that it’s a song written by Jimmy McCarthy that was recorded by Christy Moore. It gets a jazzy treatment.

There is a Dropkick Murphys cover too, “I’m Shipping Up to Boston”. This is the song that new bands play, together with Flogging MollyDrunken Lullabies”, when they don’t have enough self-penned songs at their earlier stages. The ShamRocks cover is too respectful to the original. IMHO, it’s the least innovative number on the album, since the other songs have been re-arranged with gusto and this one is too close to the original.

ShamRocks have shown with “Captain’s Log” that they are able to offer something fresh and different on the Celtic punk territory. Their next step should be a sophomore album based on self-penned songs.

Track list:

01. The Blood Of Cuchulainn 02:16
02. Leaving Of Liverpool 03:40
03. I’m Shipping Up To Boston 03:11
04. Kaalifornipolkka 03:59
05. The Wild Rover 04:56
06. Lord Of The Dance 03:11
07. Bully In The Alley 03:09
08. Molly Malone 02:31
09. The Rising Of The Moon 04:24
10. Wild Unicorns Of Kilkenny 02:27
11. Bonus track 3:40

VIDEOS - SHAMROCKS

The Ukranian band ShamRocks established in June 2009 in Kiev. The guys wanted to play Irish folk music, but not in a traditional way. ShamRocks are influenced by the likes of Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly or The Real McKenzies and their arrangements often turn to funk, rock 'n' roll, and even classic heavy metal.

Their first gig took place on 10 October 2009 at the Irish Bastard Festival in Kiev.

ShamRocks' music is fervent Irish stout rock from Kiev, which pumps the crowd at both big rock festivals and at small pubs (space for dancing and fun required!)

The band has played many gigs in Moscow, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa, etc. and has shared the stage with bands such as The Dreadnoughts, Mr.Irish Bastard, or Drunken Fairy Tales.

BOOTLEG - GOGOL BORDELLO Live in Germany 2008

Another band that many Celtic punk fans love.
(From Wikipedia)

Gogol Bordello is a Gypsy punk band from the Lower East Side of Manhattan, formed in 1999 and known for theatrical stage shows and persistent touring.

Much of the band's sound is inspired by Gypsy music. The band incorporates minor-key accordion and violin (and on some albums, saxophone) mixed with punk and dub.

The band has appeared in a number of independent films, most notably in 2005's Everything Is Illuminated in which the lead singer, Eugene Hütz, co-starred with Elijah Wood in a dramady and adventure story about the Nazi purges in Ukraine. The entire group was present for one shot in which they played a brass band. Gogol Bordello contributed the song "Start Wearing Purple" to the film's score.

"Gogol" comes from the name Nikolai Gogol. As one of the most influential writers in Ukrainian and Russian literature, Gogol paved the way for the likes of Kafka and Dostoevsky. He also serves as an ideological influence for the band because he "smuggled" Ukrainian culture into Russian society, which Gogol Bordello intends to do with Gypsy/ East-European music in the English-speaking world. "Bordello", in Italian, refers to a brothel or a "gentleman's club". The band was originally titled Hütz and the Béla Bartóks, but Eugene Hütz says that they decided to change the name because "nobody knows who the hell Béla Bartók is in the United States". The band played their first show as the unofficial band at an after-hours club called Pizdetz where they became the house band and DJ Hütz became the house DJ.

Gogol Bordello's first single was released in 1999, and since then they have released five full-length albums, and one EP. In 2005 the band signed to punk label SideOneDummy Records. On 27 April 2010 Gogol Bordello made its major record label debut with Transcontinental Hustle on Rick Rubin's American Recordings, a subsidiary of Columbia Records/Sony Music Entertainment. Many of the songs on Transcontinental Hustle were inspired by Hütz's move to Brazil.

The band has toured tirelessly throughout Europe and America. They have made appearances at numerous international festivals and toured with such diverse bands as Primus, Flogging Molly, and Cake. In an interview with NPR, frontman Eugene Hütz cites Jimi Hendrix and Parliament-Funkadelic as among the band's main musical influences. They have mentioned Manu Chao, Fugazi, Zvuki Mu, Karamelo Santo, Sasha Kolpakov and The Clash as influences as well.

In August 2010 the band was rumored to participate in the Ukrainian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011, but the band soon denied this.[5] Gogol Bordello performed seven shows with System of a Down throughout May of 2011.

Most recently, they performed live at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts festival 2011, located in Manchester, TN for Bonnaroo's 10 year anniversary. At Bonnaroo they played a 1.5 hour set in the middle of the night and performed with Devotchka.

Gogol Bordello has appeared in a multitude of American and international music festivals. A significant step towards greater publicity was made when Eugene Hütz and violinist Sergey Ryabtsev joined Madonna on stage. Hütz and Ryabtsev performed "La Isla Bonita / Lela Pala Tute" with Madonna at the London Live Earth concert on July 7, 2007.
