REVIEW - PYRATES! "Uncharted Lands" (2014)

Pyrates! "Uncharted Lands" Self-released
Release date: 29 April 2014 (digital) 28 May 2014 (physical)
Running time: 43:46, 13 tracks

Dave Gallows formed Pyrates! in England in 2006 and that incarnation of the band released a demo-EP in 2007. When he moved to The Netherlands some years ago, he re-formed Pyrates! with a bunch of local musicians.  Dressed with pirates costumes, they made a name for themselves in the pirate/festival circuit. After having released their 9 track debut album in 2011, the following crew members have recorded their sophomore CD: David Gallows (lead vocals, guitars, mandolin), Bart van den Akker aka Black Bart (drums, percussion, vocals), Martin van der Mijden aka Navigator Marty (bass, vocals) and Ralf Zegelink aka Marauder Ralf (fiddle, vocals). “Uncharted Lands” is a 13 track album where Pyrates! offer their own renditions of some classics and some unusual shanties and sea songs. Musically, Pyrates! have their roots in the British folk rock scene, but they add interesting festive elements in the Celtic Canadian vein. The fiddling is top-notch, but bass and electric guitar are also amazing on some tracks.

The opening number “The Dreadnaught” and the closing number “Bold Rubber” have the epic folk-rock twist. The well-known Morrison’s jig is played at the end of the former.  “Fire Marengo” and “Haul Away Joe” are a couple of shanties that are sung a capella. “Chicken on a Raft” is a kick-ass version of this “new” shanty. It’s reminiscent of the Oysterband’s songs  from the “Rise”/”Little Rock to Leipzig” era. In fact, David Gallows vocals sound similar to John Jones’.

Blow Ye Winds” has a party side à la Dust Rhinos;  “Excursion Around The Bay” gets a more electric treatment than the Great Big Sea’s cover; and “Ocean Waves May Roll” is an awesome version of a song previously recorded by German speed-folkers Fiddler’s Green under the name “The Mermaid”.

Pyrates! have also recorded a couple of over-exposed songs. “The Irish Rover” doesn’t disappoint and “South Australia” is improved by adding an instrumental. Finally, the guys have included a set of tunes called “New World Medley” consisting of “Scotland the Brave”, “Oh Susannah”and “Camptown Races

Uncharted Lands” is available on both digital and physical versions. The CD has a four page booklet providing all the credits, but no lyrics. I’ve added the links to the lyrics to the songs and some info about them (Click on the song titles under Tracklist)

Pyrates! second album is full of traditional songs, but these buccaneers have chosen several gems that are normally overlooked and they have given to them a new lease of life. A good addition to your pirate music collection.

REVIEW - THE McGONAGALLS "Greatest Hits Vol. 1" (2014)

The McGonagalls "Greatest Hits Vol.1" Self-released
Release date: 2 June 2014
Running time: 25:24, 8 tracks

The McGonagalls is a Scottish Celtic punk family band based in Alkmaar (The Netherlands) whose roots are in Dundee (Scotland). Father Dave McGonagall (drums, bodhrán, vocals), his son “Hacksaw” Rory McGonnagall  (guitars, bass,  banjo, vocals) and his nephew “Fiery” Tim McGonagall have shared the stage with the likes of The Mahones and The Cundeez and they have played in a lot of Dutch venues, including  the well-known Melkweg in Amsterdam.

Greatest Hits Vol.1” is a 8 track mini-album consisting of a couple of originals, a Pogues cover, an Ewan MacColl cover and four standards. The Dundee link is obvious on “Balgay Hill”, since it’s a “Spancill Hill” cover, but all the references are to Dundee places. The two “originals” are Celtic comedy punk numbers on which the band has put music to the poems of William Topaz McGonagall. This Dundee based poet is hailed as  the writer of the worst poetry in the English language. Banjo can be heard on “Young Munro The Sailor” and “A Tribute to Dr. Murison” is one of my faves, a fast-paced song with a more aggressive twist. Both “Streams of Whisky” (sic) and “The Fields of Athenry” show the pub side of the band, with totally drunken backing vocals on the chorus. The other three numbers have a punk 77 sound: “Bonny Ship the Diamond” features interesting harmonica arrangements and “Danny Boy” and “Dirty Old Town” are tight punk numbers.

The CD is delivered in a jewel case with a four page booklet with a lot of live pics inside and a drawing of the Scottish bard on the cover, the band’s line-up and the thank-you’s. No lyrics are included. However, everybody is able to sing-along to most of the tracks without them. Regarding the two McGonagall poems, their lyrics can be found at this wonderful site about the poet from Dundee.

I’m looking forward to listening to “Greatest Hits Vol. II” and I expect that the three piece will put music to more McGonagall’s poems.

Tracklist:

1 - Young Munro the Sailor 2:59
2 - Streams of Whisky 2:50
3 - A Tribute to Dr. Murison 2:42
4 - Balgay Hill 4:10
5 - Bonny Ship the Diamond 2:46
6 - Danny Boy 3:01
7 - Dirty Old Town 2:37
8 - Fields of Athenry 4:17

THE ROUGHNECK RIOT - NEW ALBUM AND TOUR

New Album ‘Out Of Anger’ Released 13th October via TNS Records

UK and European Tour Dates Announced

Watch Studio Diary Video Now

By no means a traditional folk-punk band, Roughneck Riot are pleased to announce that their new album ‘Out Of Anger’ will be released on 13th October via legendary Manchester zine-turned-record-label TNS Records.

The 6 piece from Warrington, UK have been making their mark on the punk scene for nearly a decade with their heavy, melodic sound. Drawing influence from a host of folk, punk and hardcore bands, they’re intent on doing their bit to highlight the socio-political issues of the 21st Century to a brand new generation of punks.

We’re reinventing and rewriting folk music to make sense to our lives today” comment the band on their attitude “We write music for people; regardless of race, nationality, age, gender or sexuality. The past 2 years have been quite ridiculous in the UK. We’ve been mostly writing when something has made us angry."

"There’s a disgusting amount of fascism and racism in the UK and Europe and we've included some more personal tales from our own lives too - Sam (accordion) has even rewritten an old song about Fox Hunting to be a tribute to the Hunt Saboteurs of the UK. We are a voice amongst many in the scene that’s ready to be heard. We are here to play folk punk music. From nowhere and everywhere, this is our day.

Since their early inception in 2005, Roughneck Riot have evolved into one of the most unique folk punk bands on the UK circuit, praised for their energetic live shows, constant touring and hard graft in the punk scene.

The new album, recorded at Jaraf House studios in Wigan, is testament to their relentless work ethic and carries more than a fistful of influence from The Levellers, Against Me!, Bad Religion and Dick Gaughan.

ROIO - SCYTHIAN Live at the Berkeley Cafe, Raleigh, NC, 2010

Scythian recently toured Ireland on their 10th anniversary tour. Besides, they've just released a new album, "Jump at the Sun".

This recording of independent origin was taped in 2010 and is backed by the band.

"Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays kicked-up Celtic and world music with hints of Gypsy and Klezmer, all infused with a touch of punk-rock sensibility. Take classically trained dueling fiddlers, toss in a rhythm guitar, a banjo and accordion, then power it with the driving rhythm of a world percussionist, and you've got the ingredients for a show you won't soon forget. They headline US Celtic Festivals

Named after Ukrainian nomads, Scythian (sith-ee-yin) plays immigrant rock with thunderous energy, technical prowess, and storytelling songwriting, beckoning crowds into a barn-dance rock concert experience. Celebrating 10 years of getting people dancing all night, Scythian has released their new album, Jump at the Sun, August 15, with new songs debuting at shows before then."

THE SCALLY CAP BRATS NEED YOUR HELP TO RELEASE THEIR NEW ALBUM

The Scally Cap Brats are a celtic punk/Oi! band from Ottawa, Ontario made up of five friends who love to make music. The band formed nearly four years ago and since then have shared the stage with many international touring acts and have toured on their own throughout Ontario and Quebec.

Their campaign is aimed at raising funds to press and release their newest album, "Our Storied Past". They've spent the last few weeks in the studio and they think this is the best collection of songs they've ever put together. Not only is this their best work, but this will be the first time they've ever release anything on vinyl.

By contributing to their campaign you will not only be buying yourself a quality record and exclusive merch, you will be helping them achieve the dream of seeing their music pressed on vinyl. They have long talked about the feeling of seeing their very own record spin on a turntable and you can make that a reality for them.

The album has been recorded, the artwork is ready. They just need YOU to make the rest happen.

BAND OF THE MONTH - COCKSWAIN

The band of August 2014 hails from Phoenix, Arizona: Cockswain. The reverbnation widget will be at the top at the right the whole month of August.

"Cockswain cox·swain [kok-suhn, -sweyn]

noun

1. the steersman of a racing shell.

2. a person who is in charge of a ship's boat and its crew, under an officer, and who steers it.

3. Scruffy Celtic rock band from Phoenix AZ

"Distant hills look green."

Cockswain was originally conceived by lead singer/mandolin player Neil Jay Ward in late 2011 writing a few originals, mixing The Pogues, The Clash, Dubliners, Tom Waits and high energy pub rock and a few Irish pub standards.

Neil then recruited long time friend and recent Tucson transplant Clint Davis on bass, and Tempe rocker Shane Smith on drums. After a revolving door of guitar players, they nailed down Matt Cleghorn (who played guitar in infamous AZ punk rock band, The Impossible Ones a couple years before).

Soon, by the magic of the internet, they crossed paths with east coast native, Maureen Perzan, a classically trained flautist, who took to the low D whistle and tin whistle with ease! Adding ethereal vocal harmonies, she brings a softness to the roughish, drunken sound of Cockswain!

And with Saxy Tuff on the baritone sax, the band was ready to book their first show!

“It’s the first drop that destroys you, there’s no harm at all in the last”

Cockswain played their first show St. Paddy’s Day in 2012 and continued playing local punk rock bars, clubs for the next year, as well as a couple of national shows including Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Molly’s band, The Bunny Gang and Boston hard core band, Slapshot. St. Paddy’s Day 2013 came and went and it was decidedly time to grow the Cockswain sound. After a brief search, friends of the band, fiddle virtuoso Amanda Lubking, and banjo picker Wake Lubking enlisted in the Cockswain crew, solidifying the 8 piece lineup!

"The future is not set, there is no fate but what we make."

Many things in the works for 2014! Including a full length record of original songs and many, many more shows!

Slainte!"
