Penn Du (Black Heads) is a 7 piece Breton band based in Yvelines, Île de France (Parisian Region). The band was established in 2003, but the current line-up dates from 2011: Arnaud aka Nono (drums, 2003), Cédrick aka Drics (bagpipes, bombardes, whistles and bckg. vocals, 2003), Xavier aka Xav (keyboards, samples, 2005), Eric aka Gal (lead vocals and guitars, 2007), Anthony aka Anto (lead vocals, trumpet, bass and 12 string guitar, 2009), Sébastien aka Seb (guitars and djembe, 2009) and Raphaël aka Raph (fiddle, trombone, harmonica and bckg. vocals). They released their debut album “Définitivement à l’Ouest!” in 2012 and their sophomore album “Mascarade!” followed in 2016. Penn Du have labeled their music as 100% Rock Ska Celto-Bretonned.

All the tracks on “Mascarade!” are self-penned songs: upbeat Celtic rock with Breton folk influences. The boys say that they are influenced by the likes of Merzhin, Soldat Louis, Tri Bleiz Die, Tri Yann and Alan Stivell.

“Mascarade!” kicks off with “Complainte d’un Roi”, a Breton ska number. This was the first "single" off the album, as a video for this song was shot. Track no. 2 is the amazing “L’esclave”, my fave song on the album. Well-balanced blend of powerful guitars and traditional instruments. It was the second “single” off “Mascarade!” and the video for the song was out in 2018.

“Ar gwyr ar yezhou” is a song in French and Breton featuring bagpipes and fiddle about the respect for the French regions and their own languages (Breton, Basque, Corsican, Catalan and Occitan). “Merlot l’enchanteur” is another ska song featuring tin whistle, fiddle and bombarde. The beat is shifted from ska to reggae towards the end.

The other highlights on the album are, IMHO, “Everezh” and the bonus track “Chanson pour JC”. “Everezh” begins with acoustic guitar and vocals, and then the rest of the band joins in. Fiddle and tin whistle are heard at the beginning and bombarde and fiddle at the end. The song ends up again with acoustic guitar and vocals, together with a live at the pub atmosphere (claps and shouts). “Chanson pour JC” gets an acoustic folk-punk treatment based on djembé and fiddle.

Fringale is the side project of Fabien Barot (The Charmrocks). “Mise en Bouche” is the band’s third EP, as they have previously released their self-titled 5 track EP in 2015 and another 5 track EP, “Deuxième Service”, in 2016.

“Mise en bouche” was recorded in June 2107 by Fabien (lead vocals, guitars, clarinet, percussions), Ninon Langlois (fiddle, background vocals), Pia Véran (bass, background vocals) Kévin Lérou (drums, percussions, bckg. vocals) and guest musicians Timothée Alkhallaf (trumpet), Frédéric Lamarre (trombone) and Romain Lambert, Marianne Taylor, Quentin Monget, Tanguy Morvant and Anne Doyen on background vocals.

The music on “Mise en bouche” is a party folk-rock with a Celtic twist. Lyrics are very important to really appreciate the band, but anyway the songs can be enjoyed by fans that don’t speak French.

My fave numbers are the opening track “Atomic Bouga Bouga” and the closing track “Chanson pédagoqique”. The former has a ska passage and features fiddle and horns, while the latter gets a reggae treatment. “Des mots” and “Un simple courant d’air” are also a couple of interesting cuts that remind me of the Shoepolishers.

“Mise en bouche” is housed in a cardboard sleeve and is available both at Amazon and iTunes.

The Moorings first studio album and their sophomore live acoustically CD showed that the band from Alsace was able to write top-notch songs. But The Moorings got their degree with their “Nicky’s Detox” EP, a 5 track CD where all the songs were composed by the songwriting team Nicky Sickboy/D.Phil Jelly.

Three years have gone by and The Moorings have finally released a studio album based on self-penned stuff. “Unbowed” follows the same path of The Moorings’ previous EP, as there are songs in French and songs in English.

I appreciate when a band includes some sets of tunes on their albums. And there is a set of tunes on “Unbowed”. Moreover, “The Dancy Cargo Hold’s Dance/Mermaid’s Jig” is not a traditional number: new fiddler Anne has written the first tune together with front man D.Phil Jelly, while the second tune was written by former fiddler Sophie-Anne. Hats-off!

Three songs in French have made the album. “Amsterdam” is a kick-ass rendition of the Jacques Brel’s classic song. “Les Bras Piqués” is another badass number featuring Luca Crespi (Uncle Bard and The Dirty Bastards) on tin whistle. Maybe the lyrics would be OK 15 years ago, but I feel that fortunately nowadays discrimination against tattooed people is very low. “Mutins” is an amazing pirate song featuring Sweeney Lauder on tin whistle.

“Brandy Belle” is a weird number, as it’s sung both in French and in English. Not my cup of tea.

As far as the songs in English are concerned, a couple of them were previously released on “La Cigale Unplugged”. “The Mariner I used to be” is based on the tin whistle (Sweeney Lauder again) and the banjo, and it’s probably the most pogues-ish number on “Unbowed”. “Posy of Lily” has also been re-arranged with an epic end.

Three tracks showcase The Moorings drinking side. Videos were shot for the anthems “Drink up Fast” and “Ice Cold Jar of Whiskey”. I hope that a video will be shot for the opening track “Another Drinking Wound” too. This fantastic song that reminds me of The Clash is my fave track on the album, btw.

Apart from those cuts, there are two songs that show a different side of the band: “Captain Watson’s Song” and “Invictus”. Former fiddler Anne-Sophie and D.Phil Jelly have put music to the poem by William Ernest Henley and Celkilt bagpiper Loïc MacWind guests on tin whistle .

“Unbowed” is housed in a 6 panel digipack that comes with an 8 page booklet. The album is also available on vinyl.

2017-11-22 MINI ALBUM REVIEWS - THE GREEN DUCK "1er EP" (2015) and "2ème EP" (2017)

The Green Duck "1er EP"

The Green Duck is a French three piece band: Grégoire Butaeye (fiddle and background vocals, from Brittany) Laurent Réval (lead vocals, harmonica and drums, from Montepellier) and Lionel Fouchet (guitar, mandolin, background vocals, from Paris). This is the official line-up, but often they are joined by a banjoist and a bassist.

Their first CD was a mini-album released in 2015. That mini-album consists of 5 studio tracks and 3 live tracks. The studio tracks were recorded and mixed by Steph Legrand, who also played the bass on the first track. The live tracks were recorded by Bertrand Truptil.

The Green Duck set-list is based mainly on Irish standards, but there is enough place for the odd bluegrass number, some celtic style covers of rock classics and some originals. Then, the track listing on their first CD follows the same approach.

The mini-album kicks off with “Blow it away”. This amazing song was written by Laurent. It’s more bluegrass than Celtic, and guest Manu Bertrand plays dobro and banjo.

The next three numbers are Irish standards: “Drunken Sailor”, “Step it out Mary” and “Whiskey in the Jar”. These songs have been covered by a lot of bands, but the arrangements are top-notch. “Drunken Sailor” features the tune “Drowsy Maggie”. "Step it out Mary” has a beginning that reminds me of Louise Attaque, together with interesting fiddle arrangements and backing vocals. “Whiskey in the Jar” has some appealing fiddle arrangements too.

Track no. 5 ("Around the World") is the kind of number that I love: a kick-ass set of tunes. The three members do a great job.

The last three tracks are the live ones. Jean Marc Delon plays the banjo while Billy plays the bass. “Dirty Old Town” is played with gusto. “American Land” is a badass number too. “Highway to Hell” gets a country spin and the final result is awesome.

The Green Duck "2e EP"
Release date: July 12, 2017

Two years later, The Green Duck have released their second mini-album. Once again, there are 8 tracks, but all of them are studio takes. “On the Rise” is the first cut on their second CD. It has been written by Laurent Réval (lyrics) and Lionel Fouchet (music) and recorded and mixed by Steph Legrand. After listening to this gem I keep on wondering why these guys have not recorded more self-penned stuff.

The other 7 tracks on the mini-album were mixed and mastered by Lionel Fouchet. Even if they have been recorded at the studio, all of them have a “live” spirit. Regarding the standards, I’ve enjoyed their renditions of “Johnny I hardly knew Ye”, “The Foggy Dew” and “The Raggle Taggle Gypsy”, because the arrangements add something new.

Fortunately, there is a set of tunes on this new CD: “Paddy on the Turnpike and Tommy’s Tarbukas”. Maybe another set of tunes instead of a cover of a pub standards would have been better for the tracks balance.

The Green Duck’s second mini-album is over with “Hush Little Baby”. No, it’s not a cover of The Men They Couldn’t Hang's song, but the well-known lullaby. Weird choice, but it works.

2017-09-24 ALBUM REVIEW - LES TRICARDS "Saint Pogo" (2017)

We have a strong relationship with Les Tricards. The band from Colmar (France) has been releasing a lot of singles and EPs for free and they have always sent to us their new stuff straightaway. Les Tricards have just issued their debut album “Saint Pogo”. This time, it’s not free, but this should not put a damper on the sales: only 4 Euros for 12 songs is a gift.

Les Tricards is a solo project by Loran. Who is Loran? Loran and his brother Alain, aka the Duduche bros, were the bassist and drummer at Kromen, an Alsatian streetpunk/oi! band that was active between 1.991 and 1.996. Their mate Fred aka Randu (lead vocals) committed suicide in 1996. The Duduche bothers kept on rehearsing and writing music and then a new band was born with the help from some friends: 2’dTension. 2’dTension was active between 1997 and 2016, but Loran started a side-project in 2011: Les Tricards. Les Tricards is Loran’s solo band, but Alain adds the background vocals.

Les Tricards’ new delivery is a 12 track album. Loran has re-recorded two old songs, “Ma Révolution” from the “Ma Révolution” EP (2012) and “On est Tricard” from the “Un poing c’est tout” EP (2011). “La peste et le cholera” was previously released as a single too, but the other 9 tracks are never previously released songs.

“Saint Pogo” kicks off with “Chantez”. It’s an intro with almost no lyrics: a 1-2-3-4 shout and some “chantez, chantez, woah” and “chantez, Les Tricards, chantez, Les Tricards” (sing, sing, woah and sing, sing, Les Tricards). A good intro to sing along featuring attractive bass lines and pipes.

The next track reminds me of Bérurier Noir “Jim la jungle”. Obviously I’m not talking about the music, but about the lyrics. Excellent bagpipes (street)punk number.

“Saint Pogo” was advanced on YouTube before the album was released. Another streetpunk drinking number with Les Tricards DNA.

“Monsier Blanc Cassis” is a song about a beauf (beau frère, brother in law). In French, a beauf is a racist, a “ronchon” (grumpy) and a “réac” (reactionary, right wing). Mister Blanc Cassis feels that he’s got the blues. He doesn’t go to the pubs, he doesn’t quarrel with the muslim people and he is not going to the Front National rallies anymore. Finally, his wife tells him that he has not got the blues: he has evolved as a human being and he has the right feelings now. In other words, he’s not a stupid anymore. This song features Loran’s wife on female vocals.

The following track is a traditional number with new lyrics: “Dans les prisons de Nantes”. Maybe some fans will remember that the German band Waxie’s recorded this song on their debut album “The Prisoner” (1995). Les Tricards rendition is a kick-ass number to sing out.

“Le vent se lève” is a fast-paced number that streetpunk fans will enjoy. It’s followed by “La peste et le choléra”, a song about the French elections, and the bagpipes punk anthem “Ma révolution”. The new version of “Ma révolution” is a little bit shorter than the original, 3:00 instead of 3:39.

Track no. 9 will become soon a crowd favorite: “Ouarglo”. Amazing Celtic oi! number about drinking: we always promised that it’s the last one, but we keep on drinking.

“Les pieds dans le plat” is one of the band’s calling cards: “Les Tricards sont là, Les Tricards vous emmerdent” (Les Tricards have arrived, f*ck you)

The lyrics for the next song are a sort of tale about free will, an "unrequited love" and Jean de La Fontaine’s fable "The Fox and the Grapes”. Strange lyrics, but interesting music anyway.

The closing number is the new version of “Les Tricards”, the other calling card on the album. This time, the new version is longer than the original, 2:48 vs 2:44.

“Saint Pogo” is a digital release and can be bought from bandcamp. All of the lyrics in French are available at Bandcamp too.

Les Tricards haver their roots in the French oi! scene from the 90’s, that is, the Chaos Productions bands: Reich Orgasm, Kidnap, Les Collabos, Trotskids, Komintern Sect …. If you have downloaded Les Tricards previous releases, you know what to expect from their debut album. However, if you have never listened to Les Tricards and you love streetpunk, oi! and bagpipes, then give them a try.

2017-08-27 ALBUM REVIEW - SONS OF O'FLAHERTY "The Road Not Taken" (2017)

When I reviewed Sons of O’Flaherty’s demo in 2012, I wrote “As the band say that their influences are Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, Social Distortion or Bad Religion, I guess that they could soon evolve into a real Celtic Punk band and move from the pubs circuit to the rock venues circuit. They are young, they write their own material and a strong competitor to The Booze would help to establish a Celtic punk scene in France.” After listening to the songs that were put together on the “Misc Songs” EP from 2016, it was clear that they have really evolved in that direction.

Some members have gone and new ones have jumped in. Then, the personnel who recorded "The Road not Taken" was Tibo on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, Maël on mandolin, banjo and background vocals, Théo on bass and background vocals, Lawrynn on tin whistle, harmonica and veuze, Tom on drums and Théo on electric guitar and background vocals. They launched a successful crowdfunding campaign and have released the debut album that their fans were expecting.

“The Road not Taken” takes its inspiration from writings by Robert Frost and Jack Kerouac. It’s packed in a four panel digipack together with a 12 page booklet including all of the lyrics to the songs, all of the credits and the thank-yous. If the packaging is flawless, the music itself is brilliant. Only a couple of standards have made the album, and 9 out of 11 tracks are self-penned songs.

The fans having followed the band from their beginning will notice that 3 songs were previously recorded by Sons of O’Flaherty. In fact, an earlier rendition of “Sam Hall” can be found on the band’s first demo. Obviously the song has been re-arranged: it keeps the original spirit, but it has got a bigger Celtic punk treatment with electric guitar and tin whistle. Fellows from the Folk’n’Punk brigade sing guest vocals too:  Seb (The Mullins), Greg (Jack Raven’s Whores) and Denis (The Moorings). “Once upon a Binge” and “Fields of Athenry” were released on the “Misc Songs” EP. The former differs from the original version. The intro and the spoken part in the middle have been removed. Moreover, the previous version featured fiddle by old member Mak, while the new one features Lawrynn on tin whistle. Apart from that, “Once upon a Binge” is a kick-ass drinking song and I’m sure that you’ll grab a pint straightaway when you listen to this song. “Fields of Atheny” is close to the Dropkick Murphys’ version. However, it has some influences from Neck’s version: the tin whistle and the “hey hey the small free birds fly” gang vocals.

Other amazing songs from “The Road not Taken” are Dropkick Murphys infused numbers. The opening track ”Dead and Gone” features veuze (the old bagpipes from Brittany), gang vocals and mandolin. The song can be filed together with “The Night Pat Murphy Died” and Soldat Louis “Sur Ma Tombe”:  “Cause when I’m dead and gone I want my party to be restless / And everybody smiling to the trumpet of Louis Armstrong / Wanna get my kicks one last time with the sweet hoarse voice of Mike Ness / I want a kick ass funeral and all my friends to sing along / I want a kick ass funeral and all my friends to sing along”. “The Better Claim” is an awesome boy/girl song à la DKM’s “Dirty Glass” or The Pogues “Fairytale of New York”. Guest Sophie (Burning Lady) sings the girl’s parts.

“Love me” is So-Cal punk at its best. Maël on mandolin and Lawrynn on veuze do a great job. “The Lucky Ones” is a fantastic number. It reminds me slightly of The Men They Couldn’t Hang. It’s based on acoustic guitar, mandolin and harmonica, but the end of the song featuring electric guitar has a The Real McKenzies sound. Matty (Roughneck Riot) guests on “Saint or Sinner”, a badass song blending Flogging Molly influences, the mandolin driven punk folk by Matty’s band and some Celtic soul on the chorus.

“Red Wine Teeth” was the song chosen for the first video off “The Road not Taken”. “Glory Days” and “The Townspeople” showcase a different side of Sons of O’Flaherty. Lawrynn plays harmonica on both songs. “Glory Days” is a ballad where banjo can be heard. “The Townspeople” has an American folk song touch. Kevin (The Decline) guests on vocals.

German writer Jean-Luc Bannalec / Jörg Bong’s Comissaire Dupin crime novels take place in Brittany. They have been a huge success in Germany and in other European countries. Sons of O’Flaherty are currently on tour and they’ll be playing a couple of gigs in Germany and Switzerland at the beginning of September.  I’m pretty sure that sooner or later Sons of O’Flaherty will be able to break through the German Celtic festivals circuit too.
