2018-06-27 ALBUM REVIEW - BODH'AKTAN "Ride out the Storm" (2018)

Bodh'aktan "Ride out the Storm" Go Musique GOCD1801
Release date: June 1, 2018
Running time: 49:03, 14 tracks (13 + 1)

Ride out the Storm” is the second album in English released by Quebecer band Bodh’aktan. “Against Winds and Tides” was basically a bunch of songs from their debut album in French, together with some new songs and covers. But “Ride out the Storm” is an album featuring brand new songs.

As usual, there are some traditional numbers and a set of tunes. The first trad song is the anthemic “Heave Away” and is based on Newfie band The Fables’ rendition (it can be found on their debut album “Tear the House Down” from 1998). The second trad song is “Black Velvet Band” and features The Chieftains legend Paddy Moloney on uileann pipes. Bodh’aktan cover differs from The Grinning Barretts’ rendition that can be found on the EP that was reviewed here. In 1998 The Chieftains released an album together with Canadian acts,  “Fire in the Kitchen”. Bodh’aktan didn’t exist yet, so you won’t find this song on that album. But if ever “Fire in the Kitchen” is re-issued, it would be wonderful that this number could be added as a bonus track. The last traditional song is “Mick MGuire”. This song shares the music with “Hot Asphalt” and Bodh’aktan have been inspired by The Irish Rovers version. The set of tunes is one of the highlights on the album. It’s titled “Reels” and there are three reels (the second one is “Julia Delaney’s” and the third one “St. Anne’s”).
"About Things to Come" is a kick-ass intro featuring excellent pipes and percussion.Bodh’aktan’s classic sound can be heard on “Nothing but a Game”, “Ride out the Storm” and “You are the Ones”. “The Bridge” is Rock’n’Reel at its best and “Get Loud”, an AC/DC infused cut, showcases the band’s hard rock edge too. On the contrary, “While I’m Away” is a quieter song with a folkier approach.

Two versions of the sing-along “We Cannot Fail” are delivered: the standard version and the bonus one, featuring German Celtic rock heroes Fiddler’s Green.

Fans of Celtic rock will enjoy “Ride out of the Storm”. The first two albums put the level too high, but Bodh’aktan have been able to keep on offering top-notch albums with different sounds and approaches.

2016-03-15 REVIEW - BODH'AKTAN "s/t" (2016)

Bodh'aktan "s/t" GOCD1601
Release date: February 19th, 2016
Running time: 36:08, 12 tracks

There are several bands that are stretching the boundaries of the genre and releasing essential albums. They are great musicians and little by little they are following the footsteps of the likes of Fiddler’s Green and headlining the main festivals in Europe. For instance, Paddy and The Rats, Firkin, Happy Ol’ McWeasel and Bodh’aktan.

The Quebecer band’s previous studio albums were ranked no. 4 at our Best of 2012 and no. 3 at our Best of 2013 lists. Last year they issued a full covers album titled “Mixtape (Covers)” in order to whet appetites for their third studio album in French. Or should we say the third "difficult" album?

Former Bodh’aktan’s albums have always included some traditional tunes, French traditional songs, one cover of Breton bands and/or some vocal guests. On Bodh’aktan’s self-titled third album the approach is different, since most of the tracks are originals and only a tune of “La suite de la capitale” is a traditional instrumental. Although the new CD is not a concept album, the front cover (depicting the band’s baggage at an airport) and three of the songs deal with the same subject: touring Europe.

The opening track is called “Grazie Mille”, that is, thank you very much in Italian. The chorus is then in Italian, English, German and French: “Grazie Mille / All my friends/Danke schön/À la prochaine”. The Quebecer band thanks all their European fans for the moments they shared with them. This upbeat number with a Fiddler’s Green twist thanks to the accordion is one of the hottest moments on the album.

The next track is titled “Ici” (“Here”).Once again, moments on Germany, The Netherlands, France and Italy are mentioned. Bodh’aktan have enjoyed their tours in Europe and all the friends they’ve made. But it’s always great to come back home.

Besoin d’air” (“Need to breath”) is the third track. It’s the first single off “Bodh’aktan”, an amazing punk-rock number with a Ramones vibe. Urban life vs seaside life. Love that tin whistle !!!

Come back to Europe, this time to Teuillac, near Bordeaux. Celti Teuillac is a festival that is held in July  and Bodh’aktan played there in 2015. Tin whistle, accordion and fiddle are showcased on this North American roots infused song.

Longtemps” is a toned down number featuring bagpipes that is followed by a short epic instrumental titled “Interlude (Lourde nuit)”.

Bodh’aktan “open hostilities” again with “Une autre nuit” (“Another Night”), a kick-ass song about a bartender’s life. Musically, the song is the bastard son of the early Mahones and Great Big Sea.

The sound goes harder with “André”, a fast-paced bagpipes punk number with an infectious sing-along chorus and fantastic guitar work.

Pourtant” (“However) is a ballad written by Bodh’aktan’s friend Keven Landry. Add some drops of Jacques Brel, some bagpipes, electric guitar and a Scorpions attitude and you’ll get “Pourtant”. That’s the magic of the alchemy.

Is it possible a Bodh’aktan album without a set of tunes? Of course not, they are a must have. Enjoy “La suite de la capitale”, another highlight on this CD.

The album is arriving to its end, but there are some surprises to be unveiled. Back to Europe again? Ben non. Let’s go to Lousiana !!! “Samedi soir au fait dodo” is the most festive number on the album, a badass Cajun/zydeco song. The next “Cotton Eyed Joe”? Sure

The last number is a poignant ballad reminiscent of De Dannan from the “Ballroom” era. Well balanced mix of tin whistle, fiddle and accordion, together with a brass section at the end. A true gem.

The album includes an 8 page booklet with all the lyrics to the songs, studio credits, songs credits, acknowledgments and contact info. Original bassist Rob Langlois recorded the album, but he’s left the band and the new bass player is Benoit Claveau, who also co-wrote the lyrics to a couple of songs on this CD (“Longtemps” et “Samedi soir au fait dodo”)

Bodh’aktan have done it again. Yes, the new album is not as perfect as its eldest brothers from 2011 and 2013. But Bodh’aktan have taken some risks instead of repeating a formula, and the final result is quite enjoyable. Another Top 10 album by Montreal’s finest !!!
Tracklist:

01 - Grazie Mille 2:53
02 - Ici 3:29
03 - Besoin d'air 2:54
04 - Zimmerman 0 3:29
05 - Longtemps 3:33
06 - Interlude (lourde nuit) 1:14
07 - Une autre nuit 2:44
08 - André 2:11
09 - Pourtant 4:15
10 - La suite de la Capitale 1:28
11 - Samedi soir au fais dodo 3:03
12 - Ça prend par surprise 4:26

REVIEW - BODH'AKTAN "Mixtape (Covers)" (2015)

Bodh'aktan "Mixtape (Covers)
Release date: July 11, 2015
Running time: 40:23, 12 tracks

Bodh’aktan are probably the most interesting Canadian band at the moment. They have released a couple of albums in French (and an English version of the second one) and both of them topped our charts. The lads are working on their new album but in the meanwhile they have released a digital album titled “Mixtape (Covers)”. Needless to say that all the songs are covers that the band have been playing at their shows since 2011.

The 12 numbers can be divided into 4 groups:

-    Celtic standards and shanties
-    Songs that little by little have become Celtic rock standards
-    Quebec rock classics
-    Rock classics in English

The first group consists of 2 Maritimes classics and two shanties. “Excursion Around the Bay” is a song that can be found on Great Big Sea’s debut album. Bodh’aktan’s cover follows a similar path, with bodhrán and backing vocals. “The Old Black Rum” can be found on Great Big Sea’s second album, “Up”. Bodh’aktan play a brilliant fast-paced version showcasing great electric guitar and fiddle arrangements. “South Australia” is based on The Pogues version. In fact, Bodh’aktan add the “Kerry Polka” as The Pogues used to do at their gigs. “Ladies of Plymouth” is the other shanty on the album. Interesting choice, as it's not an over-exposed song.

Regarding the second group, “I Fought the Law” is the song that most of my faves bands from the 80’s-90’s have recorded. The "original" cover version was recorded by Bobby Fuller Four, but later versions are always based on The Clash rendition: The Pogues, Oysterband, Mano Negra, Hertzainak …. Bodh’aktan’s take is a powerfulk song that has been improved with a well-known polka at the end.

Johnny CashRing of Fire” is another song that Celtic (punk) rock bands love to cover. Levellers released an amazing cover a long time ago and recently The Craicheads, Keily’s Folk and Meneguinness have also delivered awesome renditions. Bodh’aktan offer a rocking version with kick-ass bagpipes.

Galway Girl” is definitely the song that every single band loves to play at their shows. In the last years the Celtic punk/rock fans have listened to fantastic versions by the likes of The Craicheads, Menneguinness, Keily’s Folk, Lennon Kelly and Folkaholics. Bodh’aktan deliver a badass rendition with accordion, tin whistle, fiddle and gang vocals.

There is a couple of songs in French whose original versions were recorded by Quebecer bands.  Most of the Celtic folk punk fans will be familiar with Bodh’aktan’s cover of Vilain Pingouin’s hit “Salut salaud”, as a video for that song was posted here. Vilain Pingouin and Fred St. Gelais (Bodh’aktan’s producer) guest on this track. The second Quebecer classic is titled “Boisson d’Avril”, a song by a band called Groovy Aardvark. Apparently,  this was one of the first marriages between a rock band and traditional musicians in Quebec, as La Bottine Souriante members  Yves Lambert (vocals) and Michel Bordelau (backing vocals, foot tapping) guested on the original version. Moreover, Groovy Aardvark’s frontman was Vincent Peake, the guy who has produced Carotté’s debut album. Bodh’aktan have recorded a great rocking version of this classic song.

Finally, there are three songs that can be put together in another group: MotörheadAce of Spades”, House of PainJump Around” and AC/DC Highway to Hell”. All of them are respectful to the originals and are a proof of Bodh’aktan’s vocalist versatility. The Celtic hip hop number, featuring former Bodh’aktan member Jonathan Moorman on fiddle, gets an updated sound with foot tapping, fiddle and tin whistle. And Bodh’aktan have decided to move away from the obvious choice (“It’s a Long Way to the Top”) and cover AC/DCHighway to Hell”. Once again, Marie-Mai helps Bodh’aktan and adds some amazing female vocals. As Rob Langlois also plays bass on Marie-Mai’s backing band, one could say that she’s an “honorary member” of the band.

That's all. If you’re looking for the perfect soundtrack for your Halfway to St.Patrick’s Day, go to Bodh’aktan’s website and buy this enjoyable album.

THE BEST CELTIC PUNK/ROCK ALBUMS LIST OF 2013

This is the list of the best Celtic punk-rock albums of 2013.

Some remarks:

1) Even if this post is titled as “the best of”, this is not  a competition, but a sort of a game. I prefer to say that, IMHO,  this is the list of the most enjoyable albums of 2013.

2) Please remember that it’s a list of albums, not a list of bands.

3) I always intend to push new bands. However, I feel that the best album is The Tossers "The Emerald City" and even if they are an old (an essential) band, they deserve it.

4) I have rated only the albums that have been received for review purposes and/or that have been shared for free by the bands. Albums on streaming have not been rated.

5) Live albums have not been taken into account.

6) Albums without original songs (that is, covers albums) have not been taken into account

7) "Best of" or compilations have not been taken into account, since they are old material.

8) Unfortunately I have not been able to rate some albums that could have made the list, since a copy never arrived :-(

9) Nevertheless, I'm very happy with the list. It's been extremely difficult to rate the albums, because most of them were very good. In order to decide the final order I have had to take into account different things: original songs,  covers, production, packaging, artwork, liner notes, credits ... In fact, an album is more than a collection of songs.

10) This is really a global Celtic punk/rock albums list. There are albums sung in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Czech and Polish.

11) I intended to post a Top25, but then a lot of excellent albums wouldn't be on the list. So I have decided to extend the list to 35 albums.

This is the final list: 35 albums from all over the world:

23 from Europe (5 from the UK, 4 from Spain,  2 from the Czech Republic, 2 from Germany, 2 from Hungary, 2 from Switzerland, 1 from Belgium, 1 from France,
1 from The Netherlands, 1 from Poland, 1 from Sweden, 1 from Ukraine)
11 from North America (8 from the USA and 3 from Canada)
1 from Asia (Indonesia)

Some interesting albums have not been rated. They are also Celtic rock albums but not so raucous. Anyway, they are fantastic albums:

Dravra's Wave "The Witches Recall" Review
The Fenians  "Take Me Home" Review
The Indulgers "Whiskey Tonight" Review

As I have previously said, no best-of/compilations albums have been rated. But, if I were you, I would download The Sunday Punchers "High Tides and B Sides", since it's a kick-ass album

I would like to thank ALL the bands for sending/sharing their music, and specially The Cloves and The Tobacco and Brutus' Daughters for mentioning Celtic Folk Punk and More on their albums liner notes. And obviously all the fans that have sent their leads and heads-up! about new albums. You know who you are.

Finally, a special THANK YOU to Beau from Lexington Field, for their support to every single Celtic punk/rock E-zine and podcast and to all the scene. Thank you Beau for making things easier to the people who write/talk about this kind of bands.

REVIEW - BODH'AKTAN "Tant qu'il restera du rhum" (2013)

Bodh'aktan "Tant qu'il restera du rhum" Go Musique Cat no. GOCD1305
Release date: 19 November 2013
Running time: 52:54, 13 tracks + 2 bonus tracks

Do you remember Bodh’aktan? Their debut album was no. 4 at our list last year. It was a kick-ass album whose English version has been recently released. But this is not their sole release in 2013, since they have just  issued their second album in French, “Tant qu’il restera du rhum”.

The best words to describe the album are happy and fun. Happy, because happiness is what the fans will feel when they listen to this album. And fun, because that’s what these Quebecer guys offer. They do really enjoy life and music.

Bodh’aktan’s musical approach, that merges La Bottine Souriante and Dropkick Murphys,  is stronger than ever. The line-up has been increased from six to seven musicians with the addition of Luc Bourgeois (guitars, bagpipes, mandolin, whistle, bouzouki and vocals) and lyrics and/or music are written by almost all of the band members.

Regarding the songs, there is one French drinking/shanty song (“Le 31 du mois d’Août”), one Matmatah cover ("Lambé An Dro”), a set of tunes ( “Down the Brooms a.ka.  Le Set de Balais”, traditional + Jonathan Moorman’s) and a lot of self-penned songs. The list of guests is quite interesting too: Alan Doyle (Great Big Sea) on “Dansez/ Dance Hey!”,Tristan Nihouarn (Matmatah) on “Lambé An Dro”, Yves Lambert (La Bottine Souriante former frontman) on “Trash Tombola” and Choeur Marine on “Le 31 du mois d’Août”.

The opening track is titled “La bouteille est agréable”. It’s a drinking song featuring pipes and fiddle. The perfect example of their blend of traditional Quebecer music and standard Celtic punk/rock.

The next number, “Dancez/Dance Hey!” is a celebration of their Quebecer and Canadian identity. Lyrics are half in English, half in French. A catchy song with amazing fiddle and tin whistle.

Les fantômes de l’écoutille” it’s a song about a tavern in a harbor where the punters are the  ghosts of old sailors. The song has a French twist thanks to the accordion.

Track no. 4 is titled “La Démone”. It’s a Soldat Louis infused number about an unrequited love.

The following track is one of the standouts. A passage is inspired by  the “Keel Row” strathspey, a tune that every punk rock fan will recognize, as it can be heard on Toy DollsThe Ashbrooke Launderette” song. The lyrics are modern folk. I mean, the topic seems to be traditional, but I cannot imagine the same end in the XVIIIth century.

No rest for the damned. Track no. 5 is Breton (folk) rock at its best: Bodh’aktan’s rendition of Matmatah’s classic song “Lambé An Dro”. Awesome!

The lads keep on sailing on French waters, since “Salut les disparus” has a French rock flavour too.

Le 31 du mois d’Août” is another brilliant number. It’s a shanty/drinking song about a French corsair that captured an English frigate. The arrangements are top-notch. If you loved the instrumental sets on the last Mahones album, you’ll love the fiddle and whistle part near the end of the song (in fact, Jonathan Moorman played fiddle on “Angels & Devils”)

And the biggest punk number on the album is reached: “La Racaille”. Great backing vocals, accordion, bass and a fiddle that makes me think of Johnny Cunningham on DKMThe Gang’s All Here”. Lyrics deal with the real power in the world: the banking families, and the sound blends SoCal punk and keupon bands such as Parabellum.

And after a serious topic, the guys deliver a party song: “Hoompa Hoompa Yeah”, a polka song which is fun, fun and more fun.

Their next move is “Trash Tombola”, a song with a gypsy sound about a haunting fiddler. Beware of fiddlers!!!!

The last numbers are “Le Set de Balais” and “La Finale”. The former is a top-notch set of tunes in the Ashley MacIsaac Devil in the Kitchen” vein and the latter is a slow song. There is a hidden track, a sort of a joke titled “ Le Craw’s”.

Fortunately, the album is not over, since there are a couple of bonus tracks. “La valse d’hier” is the perfect Christmas song and “Au pays des géants” gets a traditional Quebecer treatment.

La Belle Province (Quebec) has a burgeoning Celtic punk/rock scene: Farler’s Fury, Irish Moutarde, Drunken Dogs, The Maggoty Brats … All of them are fantastic bands. However, if you want to enjoy the real Quebecer roots, then your choice should be Bodh’aktan. Bodh’aktanTant qu’il restera du rhum” is the best Christmas present for any Celtic punk/rock fan. My advice: buy it now. If you cannot speak French, you can always buy the English version of their debut album.  But if I were you, I would pick up this one too.
