2018-07-11 ALBUM REVIEW - IRISH MOUTARDE "Perdition" (2018)

Irish Moutarde released their debut album “Raise ‘em All” in 2013 and their sophomore album “Perdition” has been issued in 2018. During that five year period the band has had some line-up changes. Rhythm guitarist Mathieu Audet, piper Christian Haerinck and banjoist and acoustic guitarist Dominic Haerinck left Irish Moutarde in December 2014 and Gabor Somogyvari on pipes and Tony Vandal on banjo and acoustic guitar joined the band in December 2014 and March 2015. So the 7 piece band is now a sextet.
Even if 5 years have gone by and there are some “new” members, “Perdition” is the logical follow-up to “Raise ‘em All”. Obviously, Irish Moutarde have grown up as a band and some changes have taken place. “Raise ’em All” was an album sung in English, but “Perdition” consists of 7 numbers in French and 6 numbers in English. Moreover, a new traditional instrument can be heard, the accordion played by Andrée-Anne.
Highlights on “Perdition” would be tracks no. 1, 2, 7, 9 10 and 13. The opening cut “Prélude en La (lala)” is a catchy song with its la-la-las and a sound that sometimes reminds me of Breton folk. “The Poison Trail” is an amazing number with kick-ass bagpipes and banjo, and hey shouts. “À la santé de Lucifer” is an uptempo song with the classic Irish Moutarde sound. Andrée-Anne plays accordion on “Bientôt”, there are girl and boy vocals and a great electric guitar part. “Old Days” has an acoustic beginning but soon turns into a Celtic rock number with a Black Tartan Clan twist. Finally, “The Bitter End” is the brilliant closing number, and upbeat song featuring Pachelbel’s canon.
Regarding the other tracks on the album,“Terre Rouge” is a Rage Against the Machine meets The Real McKenzies song; “Jarrets” gets the SoCal punk treatment; “Eat, Drink and be Merry” is a Queen playing circus music cut; “N’oublions pas” moves to the Flatfoot 56 territory; “Only in Your Lies” features electric guitar; “Go Away” is a hardcore song and “Condamnés” is a lively track.
“Perdition” is available at the main digital platforms and physical copies can be purchased from Bandcamp and CDbaby.

2018-06-27 ALBUM REVIEW - BODH'AKTAN "Ride out the Storm" (2018)

“Ride out the Storm” is the second album in English released by Quebecer band Bodh’aktan. “Against Winds and Tides” was basically a bunch of songs from their debut album in French, together with some new songs and covers. But “Ride out the Storm” is an album featuring brand new songs.
As usual, there are some traditional numbers and a set of tunes. The first trad song is the anthemic “Heave Away” and is based on Newfie band The Fables’ rendition (it can be found on their debut album “Tear the House Down” from 1998). The second trad song is “Black Velvet Band” and features The Chieftains legend Paddy Moloney on uileann pipes. Bodh’aktan cover differs from The Grinning Barretts’ rendition that can be found on the EP that was reviewed here. In 1998 The Chieftains released an album together with Canadian acts, “Fire in the Kitchen”. Bodh’aktan didn’t exist yet, so you won’t find this song on that album. But if ever “Fire in the Kitchen” is re-issued, it would be wonderful that this number could be added as a bonus track. The last traditional song is “Mick MGuire”. This song shares the music with “Hot Asphalt” and Bodh’aktan have been inspired by The Irish Rovers version. The set of tunes is one of the highlights on the album. It’s titled “Reels” and there are three reels (the second one is “Julia Delaney’s” and the third one “St. Anne’s”).

"About Things to Come" is a kick-ass intro featuring excellent pipes and percussion.Bodh’aktan’s classic sound can be heard on “Nothing but a Game”, “Ride out the Storm” and “You are the Ones”. “The Bridge” is Rock’n’Reel at its best and “Get Loud”, an AC/DC infused cut, showcases the band’s hard rock edge too. On the contrary, “While I’m Away” is a quieter song with a folkier approach.
Two versions of the sing-along “We Cannot Fail” are delivered: the standard version and the bonus one, featuring German Celtic rock heroes Fiddler’s Green.
Fans of Celtic rock will enjoy “Ride out of the Storm”. The first two albums put the level too high, but Bodh’aktan have been able to keep on offering top-notch albums with different sounds and approaches.

It’s no easy to develop your own identity in the Celtic punk scene. People often tend to think that there are some unwritten laws that force new bands to cover the usual standards and to be on the Flogging Molly’s camp or on the Dropkick Murphys’ camp. Fortunately, some bands try to find their own place and to offer something different to the scene. That’s what The McDrinkers have been doing for their earlier stages. The 5 piece band from Quebec, Canada, bets on their original songwriting and a fresh and young punk folk sound.
“Another Drunken Night” is the band’s third recording after their first EP under the name The Irish McDrinkers (“Welcome to WhiskeyTown”, 2014, 6 tracks and 20 min 49 sec) and their debut album as The McDrinkers (“Bring the Barrels”, 2015, 12 tracks and 46 min 17 sec). As you can see, their sophomore album is longer both in tracks and running time: 14 cuts and 53 min 33 sec.
Catherine Boivin (banjo, mandolin, guitar) and Jean-Benoit St.Germain (fiddle, background vocals) play the folk instruments, while new member Alex Tremblay plays electric guitar and sings backing vocals, front man Louis Deschênes plays bass and sings lead vocals and Dave Fortin plays the drums. “Another Drunken Night” has been recorded, mixed and mastered by Louis at the McDrinkers studio. The packaging is a four panel digipack with the line-up, track listing and song credits.
My fave tracks are “Zara Road” (perfect opening track), “Modern Buccaneers” (amazing pirate number showcasing mandolin and lots of hey and woah shouts that reminds me of the latest The Scarlet CD approach), “Fairytale Sip” (a catchy song with a great instrumental part at the beginning), “The Fire off” (a number with a Flatfoot56 spin), “No More Drink” (an infectious punk pop song) and “You’re a Fake” (upbeat song with a British fiddle folk punk sound). But another numbers are also very interesting: “The Ancient Malediction” (some Flatfoot56 and Fox’n’Firkin echoes), “The Promise” (a lively banjo driven song), “Mt.Forever” (amazing balance between fiddle and mandolin an electric guitar), “Field and Sorrow” and “Boardwalk”.
Hats off to McDrinkers for following their own musical path and keeping their own identity.

Several amazing albums from Canada have been reviewed here in the last three months. And this one is not an exception: Drunken Dogs’ sophomore album “Pints”. Osrich GurCoven (lead vocals, flute and whistles), Gary Carleton (guitar, vocals), Carl Racicot (bass, backing vocals), Ben LaBaguette (drums), Lucas Choi Zimbel (accordion, backing vocals) and Pat Campeau (mandolin) are back with their Pogues inspired universe.
“Dolfia” is the first anthem on the album. This brilliant song is followed by “Battleground”, another gem in the Greenlamd Whalefishers vein. “Life of Luxury” is sung by Gary: a perfect theme and a 80's-90’s infused song that The Pogues and The Whisky Priests fans will love straightaway.
Track no. 4 is called “Black Wind” and it keeps the spirit of their previous album. The next number is a top-notch instrumental, “Gunnar’s Lament”, where Frank Lacasse guests on percussion. “Hound of Ulster” is another upbeat song featuring Osrich vocal antics while “Ode to the Highlands” is sung again by Gary (BTW, this song features a part of Edvar Grieg’s “Peer Gynt”)
Drunken Dogs move to a different territory on “People of the Worm” a gypsy/East European song. After some “usual” numbers (“Everlasting” and “Drinking in TÃr na nÓg”), Drunken Dogs deliver a couple of awesome songs. “Meat Locker” kicks off with some kids voices and soon burst into a festive number. “Pints” can be filed together with The Pogues’ stuff from the "Hell’s Ditch" era.
To finish up, Gary sings “Road to Nowhere”, an excellent dancing number where Osrich sings second vocals, and, finally, Osrich sings “Fuck You, you fucking Fuck”, a sort of a tribute to The Descendents “Weinerschnitzel”.
“Pints” is housed in a jewel case with a 12 page booklet (lyrics to all of the songs, a drawing for every song, thank yous, band pic and studio credits). The album is dedicated to the memory of Arthur Gunn (March 1944-June 2013) and was recorded and mixed by Carl Racicot. Pi S.Cutler was in charge of the mastering.
I strongly recommend Drunken Dogs “Pints” to every Celtic punk fan, but particularly to The Pogues, Greenland Whalefishers and the early Mahones fans. Now, go to Bandcamp and grab a copy!

There are several bands that are stretching the boundaries of the genre and releasing essential albums. They are great musicians and little by little they are following the footsteps of the likes of Fiddler’s Green and headlining the main festivals in Europe. For instance, Paddy and The Rats, Firkin, Happy Ol’ McWeasel and Bodh’aktan.
The Quebecer band’s previous studio albums were ranked no. 4 at our Best of 2012 and no. 3 at our Best of 2013 lists. Last year they issued a full covers album titled “Mixtape (Covers)” in order to whet appetites for their third studio album in French. Or should we say the third "difficult" album?
Former Bodh’aktan’s albums have always included some traditional tunes, French traditional songs, one cover of Breton bands and/or some vocal guests. On Bodh’aktan’s self-titled third album the approach is different, since most of the tracks are originals and only a tune of “La suite de la capitale” is a traditional instrumental. Although the new CD is not a concept album, the front cover (depicting the band’s baggage at an airport) and three of the songs deal with the same subject: touring Europe.
The opening track is called “Grazie Mille”, that is, thank you very much in Italian. The chorus is then in Italian, English, German and French: “Grazie Mille / All my friends/Danke schön/À la prochaine”. The Quebecer band thanks all their European fans for the moments they shared with them. This upbeat number with a Fiddler’s Green twist thanks to the accordion is one of the hottest moments on the album.
The next track is titled “Ici” (“Here”).Once again, moments on Germany, The Netherlands, France and Italy are mentioned. Bodh’aktan have enjoyed their tours in Europe and all the friends they’ve made. But it’s always great to come back home.
“Besoin d’air” (“Need to breath”) is the third track. It’s the first single off “Bodh’aktan”, an amazing punk-rock number with a Ramones vibe. Urban life vs seaside life. Love that tin whistle !!!
Come back to Europe, this time to Teuillac, near Bordeaux. Celti Teuillac is a festival that is held in July and Bodh’aktan played there in 2015. Tin whistle, accordion and fiddle are showcased on this North American roots infused song.
“Longtemps” is a toned down number featuring bagpipes that is followed by a short epic instrumental titled “Interlude (Lourde nuit)”.
Bodh’aktan “open hostilities” again with “Une autre nuit” (“Another Night”), a kick-ass song about a bartender’s life. Musically, the song is the bastard son of the early Mahones and Great Big Sea.
The sound goes harder with “André”, a fast-paced bagpipes punk number with an infectious sing-along chorus and fantastic guitar work.
“Pourtant” (“However) is a ballad written by Bodh’aktan’s friend Keven Landry. Add some drops of Jacques Brel, some bagpipes, electric guitar and a Scorpions attitude and you’ll get “Pourtant”. That’s the magic of the alchemy.
Is it possible a Bodh’aktan album without a set of tunes? Of course not, they are a must have. Enjoy “La suite de la capitale”, another highlight on this CD.
The album is arriving to its end, but there are some surprises to be unveiled. Back to Europe again? Ben non. Let’s go to Lousiana !!! “Samedi soir au fait dodo” is the most festive number on the album, a badass Cajun/zydeco song. The next “Cotton Eyed Joe”? Sure
The last number is a poignant ballad reminiscent of De Dannan from the “Ballroom” era. Well balanced mix of tin whistle, fiddle and accordion, together with a brass section at the end. A true gem.
The album includes an 8 page booklet with all the lyrics to the songs, studio credits, songs credits, acknowledgments and contact info. Original bassist Rob Langlois recorded the album, but he’s left the band and the new bass player is Benoit Claveau, who also co-wrote the lyrics to a couple of songs on this CD (“Longtemps” et “Samedi soir au fait dodo”)
Bodh’aktan have done it again. Yes, the new album is not as perfect as its eldest brothers from 2011 and 2013. But Bodh’aktan have taken some risks instead of repeating a formula, and the final result is quite enjoyable. Another Top 10 album by Montreal’s finest !!!

“Bring the Barrels” is The McDrinkers’ debut album. The Quebecer band formerly known as The Irish McDrinkers had previously released an EP titled “Welcome to Whiskeytown”. In the meanwhile, some band members have gone and new ones have joined the band. The new guitar player is François Blackburn and the new drummer is Dave Fortin.
Three tracks form the EP have made the album: “Dirty Rats”, “The Boozer Lament” (one of the top tracks on the album) and “Handful of Mess” (another highlight).
Other interesting numbers are “The Greatest Fall” (awesome song with a punk beginning and great fiddling), “Get Away” (another standout song featuring banjo with a Bay Street Bastards feel) and “Murphy Said” (a catchy song based on mandolin and fiddle).
Together with those tracks, check out “Follow the Wave” (a cow punk number), “Running Back on Gold” (the guys move to the Folk metal territory), “The Man and The Beast” (a track showcasing guitar) and “The Boat and The Ale” (a slow number).
The album comes in a jewel case with an inlay card stating the band’s line-up, the band’s facebook, thank-yous and the studio credits. The album has been produced, recorded and mastered by The McDrinkers at The McDrinkers Studio.
“Bring the Barrels” is a new step on The McDrinkers career. There are several fantastic numbers , the banjo has added a new atmosphere to some of the songs and the fiddle kicks ass. Go to Bandcamp and buy your Christmas present.
