MoDERN B Beard "1st Log Book" UNCL047
Release date: June 2011
Running Time: 40:08, 13 tracks
The Japanese scene has offered a bunch of great bands: The Cherry Cokes, Junior, The Croagh Patrick, Mt. Paiots, Royal Shamrock … and it keeps on growing. MoDERN B Beard is its latest sensation.
B$ala Teach (vocals, mandolin), Worry (acoustic guitar), Marty (tin whistle), Lucky Larva (bass), daCoit D ddnpa (drums & bodhrán) and Tiger Maclover (accordion) have recorded a “classic” Celtic punk album, that is, both instrumentation and sound are clearly influenced by The Pogues, Greenland Whalefishers or The Tossers.
“1st Log Book” is a solid collection of songs blending the energy of the early Pogues and the Japanese approach to Celtic punk (listen to tracks no. 2, 6 and 7) . There is no electric guitar and therefore instruments such as the tin whistle and accordion play a major role. Particularly, I find Marty’s tin whistle very interesting.
The guys cover “Sally MacLennane” and a couple of traditional songs (“The Foggy Dew” and “The Leaving of Liverpool”). But the real strength of the band is their self-penned songs.
Track no. 3 is a top-notch cow punk number that seems an outtake from “Rum, Sodomy and the Lash”.
The tin whistle in track no. 5 recalls Greenland Whalefishers, but the song is clearly a Japanese Celtic punk number.
Track no. 9 shines too: an “I Fought the Law” style song that features “Maidrín Rua” at the end.
I like the accordion in track no.10, a song that recalls Paddy and The Rats via The Cherry Cokes.
Track 12 is a Whisky Priests meet The Tossers song.
And the last song, “Message in a Rum Bottle”, is simply an awesome ballad.
MoDERN B Beard are not as raucous as The Cherry Cokes. However, their members know all the tricks to make their music appealing. In fact, Tiger Mclover was The Croagh Patrick guitarist and is also a member of The Royal Shamrock. MoDERN B Beard, sake soaked Celtic punk or Suntory (whisky) soaked Celtic punk? Who knows, maybe both of them.
1.第一章~黒髭~
2.ヴァイキング夜明曲
