The Dullahans are a five piece band from Viernheim (Hesse, Germany). The band was founded in 2012 and their debut album “Paddy Go Bragh” was released on St. Patrick’s Day 2015. Kai Schneider (vocals and whistles), Christian Flöser (accordion and background vocals), Hannes Diemer (guitar and banjo), Roman Fischer (drums and percussion) and James S. Auxborough (bass and background vocals) are clearly influenced by The Pogues and The Dubliners and rooted in the German Celtic punk scene from the 90’s (Lady Godiva, In Search of a Rose, and Waxie’s).

For this first work, the lads decided to focus on pub standards. The twelve songs that were chosen have been recorded by a lot of bands and it’s really difficult to catch the fans’ attention if the renditions don’t add something new.

Fortunately, The Dullahans have included three amazing tunes that are some of the best moments on the album: “Adam Bell’s March”, “Bill Sullivan’s Polka” and “John Ryan’s Polka”. Regarding the songs, I feel that “Poor Paddy” is the best song on the album. The Dullahans have followed a different approach, similar to Fiddler’s Green, and the result is top-notch. Anyway, there are good full band’s arrangements on “Nancy Whiskey” and interesting accordion arrangements on “Finnegan’s Wake”, “Let the Grasses Grow” (aka “The Rare Ould Mountain Dew”) and “The Irish Rover”, while “Molly Malone” and “Come Out Ye Black and Tans” get a banjo led balladeer treatment.

“Paddy Go Bragh” comes in a 4 panel digipack with studio credits, band pic, line-up and band’s website. The artwork was made by Torsten Redler and the background texture by Caleb Kimbrough.
