Scotch "Scotch the World"
Release date: March 8, 2013
Running time: 45:41, 12 tracks
There are different kinds of bands playing punk with bagpipes. In the last years, some young bands have pushed in The Real McKenzies direction and they’re doing it fine. Farler’s Fury would be the main band on the other side of the pond, and the likes of Curlies and To the Last Drop would be at the forefront of this movement in Europe. Now they are not alone, since a 5 piece band from Austria has joined their ranks with their fresh melodic bagpipes punk.
Scotch are Gerald Hochbichler (guitar, vocals), Alexander Hochbichler (pipes, tin whistle), Christian Ramsmaier (guitar), Manuel Kurz (bass, vocals) and Michael Rumetshofer (drums). They call their music Highland punk rock and their 12 track debut album “Scotch the World” was released in 2013.
My fave numbers are “Intro” and “Bloody Bastard” (they are stuck together), “Scotch Wa Hae”(a catchy number explaining why they play this kind of music), “Raise Your Glass” (a song featuring lli Gee on guest female vocals and tin whistle instead of pipes. The lyrics are about how the booze wash away our fears when we met a girl) and “The Grouch” (awesome number in the Farler’s Fury vein).
Other songs that are worth hearing: “Best Friend”, friendship between two guys is broken when one of them has a girlfriend, “Worn & Leathered”, pipes & guitars with a Smash Mouth twist and “Chainless”, another number featuring lli Gee on vocals.
“Scotch the World” is packed in a jewel case and it has a 16 track booklet with the lyrics to every song (all of them written by Scotch), line-up and credits.
Given that “Scotch the World” was issued two years ago, I guess that Scotch will be releasing their sophomore album soon. Can’t wait!
