Drink Hunters "Lurking Behind the Woods" Maldito Digital
Release date: 10 March 2014
Running time: 38:36, 14 tracks + 1 hidden track
What’s the meaning of SoCal Celtic punk? Look it up in the “Colleens” English Dictionary:
1) Celtic punk played by SoCal bands such as Flogging Molly, The Mighty Regis, Brick Top Blaggers, Hoist the Colors, etc.
2) A sub-genre of Celtic punk mixing SoCal punk sound with Celtic elements. Drink Hunters are the main band playing this sub-genre.
After a successful fundraising at Verkami, the Catalonian band Drink Hunters has released the follow-up to their critically acclaimed debut album “With My Crew”. The family is bigger now with the addition of Isra (tin whistle). Yes, the band’s sound has evolved too, but don’t panic: they are still the kings of SoCal Celtic punk. Drink Hunters have worked really hard on the traditional instruments (button accordion, fiddle and tin whistle) and the final result is very interesting. There are even some slightly medieval folk arrangements on “Speciecism” and a passage from Wolfe Tones “Newgrange” can be heard on “Big Fellah”. Besides, there are more lyrics about Celtic traditions/history, for instance the lyrics to “Breogan’s Descendents” and “Big Fella”. One again Victor Mañas a.k.a. Vic Weasel (Blowfuse, Violets) has played banjo on one of the tracks.
The best songs on the album would be “Second Chance”, an amazing number that goes in a different musical direction; “The Hunter Song”, a track about a sort of a drunken modern Robin Hood, probably the catchiest number on the CD; and “Paul’s House”, a fast-paced song based on a true story (a party at Pau’s home that went mad). Together with those songs, I’d also pick up the following ones: “Speak More Than a Fucking Politician” a rant against new converted HC fans, “Same Story”, another number to sing-along, and “Stupid Trends”.
Drink Hunters are victims of geography. If they were Americans or British, they would be selling worldwide a huge amount of CD copies. Fortunately, “Lurking Behind the Woods” is the album that may change this and give a boost to their career.
