Zeptepi "Winter in the Blood" Probe One Music POM-7 (2012)
Release date: March 21st,2012
Running time: 40:02, 12 tracks
Zeptepi is a five-piece folk rock band from Melbourne, Australia. “Winter in the Blood” is their 4th album and it was intended to be an acoustic EP. However, it turned out to be a 12 track CD. The vast majority of the tracks feature vocals, guitar and/or mandolin (Phil Dean, 11 tracks), banjo (CC Thornley, 10 tracks) and fiddle (Hayley Anderson, 8 tracks). The drummer (Bernie Dodd) plays different kinds of percussion on 6 tracks and the bassist (Frank Packer) only plays on one track.
The spirit of The Dubliners can be found all over the album. Not only is there a song about Luke Kelly (the interesting opening track “King of the Balladeers”), but Zeptepi have recorded some material that The Dubliners had previously recorded: the instrumental set “Fairmoye Lassies/Sporting Paddy” and Ewan MacColl’s “School Day’s Over”.
IMHO, the self-penned songs are more calm than the covers. So, together with the original “I Stand Enthralled”, that features a great fiddling, and "The King of the Balladeers", my faves are some of the covers: “The Girls of Old Maui” (with new lyrics), Motörhead’s “Ace of Spades” (probably the gem on the album), “Fairmoye Lassies/Sporting Paddy” and track no. 12, the banjo solo “Wallaby Stew”.
Tracklist:
01. King of the Balladeers (Phil Dean) 4:00
02. Winter in my Blood (Phil Dean) 4:38
03. Girls of Old Maui (Trad./new words and arr. Phil Dean) 3:14
04. Ace of Spades (Kilmister/Taylor/Clarke)3:26
05. The Last Voyage (Phil Dean/CC Thornley) 4:11
06. Arrows (Phil Dean) 3:30
07. Fairmoye Lassies & Sporting Paddy (Trad.) 2:03
08. No Respect (Phil Dean) 2:50
09. Peat Bog Soldiers (trad./Arr. Phil Dean) 4:00
10. I Stand Enthralled (Phil Dean) 3:38
11. School Days Over (Ewan MacColl) 3:11
12. Wallaby Stew (Trad./Arr. CC Thornley) 1:14
