CELKILT "Hey What's Under Your Kilt" (2012) Celkilt002
Release date: 2 March 2012
Running time: 24:00, 7 tracks
“Hey! What’s Under Your Kilt?”. Lots of fun. At least, that’s what you can find on the new EP released by the French Celtic Rock band Celkilt. If their previous EP was excellent, the new one is better. A brilliant recording. The four boys and the girl from Roanne have been able to improve the EP that they released last year. Changes? Yes, the right ones. They proved that nowadays they are the best Celtic rock band in France. Therefore, they didn’t need to change their direction. Pipes, whistle and fiddle are always at the front. Only small details have been added.
Fun, sing-alongs, great tunes … A couple of tracks could have been included in their first EP (“All These Times” and “I’ve Ruined My Chances”). They deliver great songs for a party, the opening track “Hey, What’s Under Your Kilt” and “Should I?”. Celkilt also show their pub band side on “The Alchemist”. The spirit of both Luke Kelly and Ronnie Drew is clear on this number.

Celkilt love the balladeers, but they love the “traditional” bands too. When Celtic Rock/punk bands are asked about their influences, the usual answers are The Pogues, The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, The Clash… Sometimes I miss more instrumental tunes on some albums or I feel that the bands play the same sets of tunes. Fortunately, Celkilt have recorded a couple of awesome instrumentals: “Smokin’ Erin” and “Gold River”. And their sound is the evidence that they also listen to fantastic Celtic bands like Capercaillie, Flook or Lúnasa.
I feel that Celkilt released one of the best EPs of 2011. I’m sure that they’ll be again at the top of my list this year. Celkilt: “Fun, Fun, Celtic Rock High School”
