REVIEW - IN SEARCH OF A ROSE "Reels and Roses Live" (2012)
By Celtic Folk Punk

In 5 Reviews, 8 New Albums, Celtic Punk, Celtic Rock, Germany, In Search of a Rose
IN SEARCH OF A ROSE "Reels and Roses Live" Reedo Records (2012)
Release date: February 2012
Running time: 72:43, 21 tracks
In the 21st century Celtic punk/rock has gone global. But, in the early 90s it was not so easy to find Celtic punk/rock bands outside English speaking countries. The exception was Germany. Plenty of bands were influenced by the likes of The Pogues, The Dubliners, The Waterboys and The Whisky Priests: The Chaste, Nelsons Wedding, Paddy Whack, Famous in 9 Years, Nuthouse Flowers, The Waxies, The Mahones, Tears for Beers, Lady Godiva … and the Big Four: Across the Border, In Search of a Rose, Fiddler’s Green and Paddy Goes to Holyhead.
As far as I remember, I read that In Search of a Rose’s debut album, “Conquering” (1995), was considered to be the best German poguesish album. The album was obviously influenced by our Celtic punk heroes and featured some songs that have become classics: “Rebel Town I”, “Pirates of Folk”, “Red Rose”... Two years later (1997) ISOAR released their second album, "Fresh Lotus Surprise" . The boys were moving little by little to their own identity and the songs were quite enjoyable.

I had bought those albums together with the “Freaks” EP directly from the band and I remember to have played them regularly. However, when their third album was out (“Extravaganza”, 2000), I didn’t buy it. After having listened to some samples, I thought that they had failed.
In 2002 the band released a “Best of” to celebrate their 10th anniversary. After that, it seems that ISOAR kept a low profile. I guess that they kept on touring Germany, but no official album was released till 2008: “Kind of Green”. It was a great success and both critics and fans liked it. I loved it too.

I guess that they kept on touring Germany, but no official album was released till 2008: “Kind of Green”. It was a great success and both critics and fans liked it. I loved it too.
ISOAR decided to record a live album to celebrate their 20th anniversary. The tracks were recorded at 5 different festivals during their German tour 2011: Rathausfestival Lippstadt, European Celtic Folk Festival F60 Lichterfeld, Castellans Folkfestival Bevergern, Knust Hamburg and Folklorefest Krefeld. As a result, the sound is a little bit polished on some tracks (e.g. “Rebel Town I”). The tracklist includes songs from all their albums and some new numbers. Most of the tracks come from their debut album (5) and their last studio album (7). I miss some old number like “The Whistle Still Blows” and “The Law is on My Back”, but I must admit that the tracklist is amazing.
Regarding the sound, I have enjoyed Joanne’s fiddling. Sometimes she sounds like Jon Sevink or MadFiddler, and sometimes like Paddy Goes to Holyhead.
The best moments of the album, IMHO, are track number 7 “Weak”, (awesome song, if it had been recorded by The Levellers it would have topped the UK charts), tracks 9 to 11 (“Red Rose”, “I Danced with John Travolta”, “Shamrocknroll”) and the last part of the album, tracks no. 14 to 20, with great performances of “Melodeon Reels”, “Free Polka Jamboree” and “Star of Munster”. By the way, the lads from Lemgo lifted their band name from a Waterboys’ song. Therefore it’s normal to find on this album another song recorded by Mike Scott’s band, the trad. number “When Will We Be Married”
In Search of a Rose are not so prolific as other German acts like Fiddler’s Green. Nevertheless, they are the kind of band whose albums are always welcome by music lovers.

REVIEW - THE BUCCANEERS "Guide Me Home" (2012)
The Buccaneers "Guide Me Home" (2012)
Release date: 18 February 2012
Running time: 35:16, 13 tracks
The Buccaneers’ band members hail from Germany and Canada. Some people can be misled and think that they are the Canadian band playing an “eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary Celtic/folk music”. However, The Buccaneers from Germany are totally different from the band from Calgary. They play street punk with a Celtic twist.
“Guide Me Home” is their third CD. Their previous efforts were “Names and Numbers”(5 tracks, 2007) and “Up the Irons” (13 tracks, 2008). After some line-up changes and the addition of Canadian multi-instumentalists Lindsey O’Connell and Ayron Mortley, The Buccaneers have really become a true Celtic/folk-punk band. The attitude, lyrics and mandolin were always there, but the new traditional instruments are welcome.
This album is a musical sea voyage on which names like “Australia”, “Down Under”, “South Australia Bay” or “Wellington” are mentioned. Metaphors on these shanties and songs about bushrangers written by Philipp Hofmeister. And this is maybe the most important thing on this album, Philipp’s ability to write catchy chorus and tales about places and people that seem to be far away, but in fact are just around the corner. Twelve original songs together with a traditional intro and outro (“Heave Away Me Johnnies”)
Check out these tracks:
“Last Goodbye” , a great song, even if it’s too close to Flatfoot 56’s “Courage”; “Edward Kelly” , the song about the well-known bushranger Ned Kelly (awesome accordion and mandolin); “We Want Bail You Out”, with a slight Clash sound at the beginning; “Ship Ya Outta Town”, an old Dropkick Murphys influenced song; “New Friends”, the perfect song to know how these guys live their music; “Take in the Slack”, an excellent shanty with amazing tin whistle, guitar and mandolin and, finally, “The Nomad and The Hun”, more tin whistle and mandolin on a The Men They Couldn’t Hang sounding song.
Enjoy this journey with The Buccaneers!
Tracklist:
01 - Intro 0:40
02 - Last Goodbye 2:55
03 - Travelled So Far 2:39
04 - Edward Kelly 3:04
05 - We Won't Bail You Out 2:27
06 - Jailbird 3:11
07 - Liberty 2:44
08 - Ship Ya Outta Town 2:56
09 - The World Has Its Own Ideas 2:52
10 - New Friends 2:18
11 - Taken In The Slack 2:55
12 - The Nomad and The Hun 3:14
13 - Outro 2:58

BLEEDING HEARTS - MARCH 2012 NEWSLETTER
"Sounds like all my other rants but has new bits interjected to confuse you
NEWS
Well, we don't seem to have much news really, it's actually tuff trying to get gigs this year here and abroad as folks are keeping their money in their wallets and ain't booking the really expensive bands like us, or the really cheap bands like us. So if you are a promoter or booker reading this - we am waitin' for ya call.
We did the first gig of the year at The Wheatie, funnily enough we did the last gig of last year at The Wheatie 'n' all. We love that place and it was a great gig - one chap, a lubberly chap called Paul has kindly posted a review on our furumcumblogcumchatpage so go check it out - we have and he says really nice things about us and we didn't even have to pay him, that's the kind of review we like. I note there was a bloke in the audience who was wearing a 'Brian' t-shirt, just like my pj's, so we did the song just for him hahahah.
I continue to write new songs in little cloud bursts and we are gradually introducing them to the set and including more from Folk 'n' Glory too so that we can reflect where we are now as a band. Fear not, we will include those random oldies too that made us the non-superstars that we are.
If you ain't heard them yet, we have Blackberry Riot, Chains, Uncool, Down The Hatch, and Lost. And there are about 5 others we ain't started on yet.
I would also like to announce that Gel's tackle is working and Ellie gave birth to a boy recently. Gel wanted to call him Isambard after that engineer bloke Brunel who built all the railways - but as it was Ellie that registered the birth, common sense prevailed and she named him George. Good luck to all 3 of them and it explains why Gel has been like a zombie with a hangover of late.
Ewan would like to report the death of his chickens thanks to an errant neighbour's dog and he was right cut up about it, he clucked all the way to the Wheatie and even refused a pickled egg from the chippie before the gig.
Gaz has nowt to say just now 'cus he don't do 'smalltalk' and Lizzie needs a mobile coffee machine now she's taken to actually drinking the stuff on stage in defiance of alcohol.
FOLK N GLORY
Folk 'n' Glory is 11 tracks long. Having been done 1,2,3,4, stylee all together in a room through hot valves straight to our budget pc - and it's got a lo-fi charm all of its own. We went for that 60's/70's vibe with band in a room having fun feel and we thinks that's exactly what we've got. Folk 'n' Glory has quite a retro feel to the music and artwork, which we think you'll be pleased with, we are. Deffo folkier than Politics and on a par with fiddle-punkin' 'Propaganda' for that soundscape to the revolution Foxie is planning every day. Yay, that's getting closer too by the way...
It's received rave reviews in Rock n Reel and Froots as well as a multitude of other mags and online sources... we hear that one mag didn't like it much so we were gonna' send them a horses head through the post but it didn't fit into the jiffy bag so I didn't bother.
FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT
It seems there is no holding Georgie boy back from his relentless attack on people's income and his napalming of the public sector and public services. Of course aided and abetted by Dave and Nicky boy the 'I will do anything for a bit of power' saddo.
All in all I think things will get worse before they get better as they blame our ills on Europe, the workers, the unions or just about anybody but the bloody Bankers who caused it.
I expect more attacks on workers rights in the Social Chapter, and it seems they are now moving in for the kill on national bargaining in the public sector - so those who deliver our services can see even further declines in their income and wider regional variations in wealth to put them on a par with the 'private sector'. And just what bit of the private sector would that be? The top earners? Not on your nelly. They want to make the NHS, Civil Service and Councils riper for privatisation and smash the unions. All in YOUR name. If you voted for that, shame on you. Be careful what you wish for and let's hope you never need to go to hospital and don't have the wedge 'cus their Health reforms are coming like it or not.
It seems we are heading for a big altercation with the chariots of capitalism in the summer. Bring it on and remember to fight the good fight you gotta do it with a song just to really piss 'em off.
WE IS ON I-TUNES ETC ETC.
Yea, you know we are, go check it out or do it the old fashioned way and visit our 'DOSHSWAP' page or come to a Bleedin' gig.
FORUM.
Contact 'keeping it nice since 1972 Ewan Porter hyphen Stevens if you wanna tell him a story.
FINALLY.
We are working on 2012 gigs and have a few irons in the fire that will be posted up as soon as stuff starts getting confirmed, so until then, we hope to see some of you, all of you, new friends, old friends, lost friends at a gig soon, when they eventually happen, so don't be strangers!

REVIEW- THE PUNKABILLYS "The Punkabillys" (2012)
By Celtic Folk Punk
On 8:14 PM
In 5 Reviews, Celtic Punk, Folkabilly, Hillbilly, The Punkabillys, USA
The Punkabillys "The Punkabillys" TriTonix Recordings (2012)
Release date: February 2012
Running time: 28:02, 8 tracks
In our "little" Paddypunk world it’s not easy to find something really new. However, from time to time, a new band is able to offer something different or to open a new path. The Punkabillys, from Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, are one of those bands.
Jamie Sellers (mandolin, lead vocals and songwriting), Brian Reiss (guitar and vocals), Chris Kosachuk (bass and vocals), Adam Frei (banjo, harmonica, dobro and vocals), Jason Marshall (pipes, tin whistle and vocals) and Matt Stumpf (drums and percussion) defined themselves as "part punk, part billy". And that’s exactly what we can find on their self-titled album: 4 punk songs and 4 (hill)billy numbers. To tell you the truth, my favourite tracks are the hillbilly ones. I’m not saying that the other ones are not interesting; it’s only that I feel that it’s their (hill)billy part that I find really surprising.
The eight track album has been recorded at TriTonix Recording studios by Mike Garrity and Daniel McGonigal. The artwork and the digipack packaging are the main reasons for buying the CD instead of mp3s, even if the lyrics are not included.
Production is a little bit rough at the edges, but the quality of the songs is really superb: “Pennsyltucky”, and amazing opening track featuring banjo and tin whistle, “30” another great track, this one featuring pipes and excellent drums, “Montco Penn”, another highlight of the album with awesome mandolin, harmonica and tin whistle arrangements and the last number, “Comin´Home” on which the acoustic guitar, banjo and tin whistle truly shine.
But, as they say, The Punkabillys are “part punk” too. And their bagpipes punk songs are also worth hearing. Listen to “Pub Crawl” and “Punk Rock Chick” and you’ll know what I mean.
The Punkabillys were our band of the month during January 2012. If they keep on writing songs like “Pennsyltucky” and “Montco Penn”, I guess that they will be our band of the month once again.
Tracklist:
1. Pennsyltucky 3:52
2. PBR 3:43
3. .30 3:05
4. Emmy Tot 4:15
5. Montco Penn 2:57

KOALAFORNIA CONVICTS TOUR 2012
By Celtic Folk Punk
On 7:34 PM
In 6 Live Reviews, 9 Tour, Hoist the Colors, Lexington Field, The Ramshackle Army
One of the main events of 2012 took place at the beginning of March: the Koalafornia Convicts Tour. Some of the best Celtic punk bands played together a couple of shows in Southern California: The Ramshackle Army, Lexington Field and Hoist the Colors.
Video and pics are courtesy of Beau Gray (Lexington Field)
Write-up is courtesy of Josh Linden (Hoist the Colors)
A mini-documentary about the Koalafornia Convicts Tour which took place March 1 to 3, 2012 in Southern California and featured The Ramshackle Army from Melbourne, Australia, Hoist the Colors from Los Angeles, CA, and Lexington Field from San Diego, CA. Also joining the fun were Green Ashes (Los Angeles) & The Fooks (San Diego). Beers were consumed, Celtic music was rocked out, tattoos were inked, and great friendships were made! Cheers mate!
DAY 1
DAY 2:
Tattoos at 3rd Street Tattoo in Hermosa Beach, CA
Friday March 2nd, 2012 Slidebar Cafe in Fullerton, CA.
We had been waiting a while for this night to arrive. Four bands, three spread throughout Southern California, one from the other side of the planet, set to converge for one brilliant night of music! Between Green Ashes, Lexington Field, The Ramshackle Army and Hoist the Colors, there was no way this show would be anything less than awesome!
The night started off with Green Ashes, playing some really good covers. Lots of Pogues and some traditional stuff as well. After losing their singer recently, it was good to see them back up on their feet and stronger than ever! Lexington Field followed up and as always did not disappoint. From their own songs, "Selfish Bastard" to "Tracy Boys", the energy never left once. Beau is really belting em out these days and the band is super tight. I am glad we have become good friends with these guys, and always look forward to playing with them. As soon as Lexington Field powered through a blistering set, The Ramshackle Army was ready to go. These guys had been staying at my place for the previous couple days and were really itching to let loose on an American audience. I was floored.
There is a reason why this band is going on tour with the Dropkick Murphys. This is one of the tightest, well put together bands I have ever seen. On top of that, some of the most genuine kids in the scene. Their songs were crisp and packed with passion and energy, making me realize that I was watching something special. "Bays End Guns" as well as "Fire is Burning" were played during their set and are quickly becoming some of my favorite tracks to listen to right now. All in all, I was stoked to share the stage with this band, and hope to do so again one day.
It was then our turn (Hoist the Colors) to get up and go. With a great turn out to the show, we had a blast! Minus a few technical difficulties, (Our acoustic guitar players battery fell out of his guitar from jumping around like a crazed school girl) the show went smoothly. We were happy with the show went well, being that it was in our area and wanted to show the rest of the bands a great time. Next stop, San Diego!
DAY 3:
Saturday March 3rd, 2012 Gallaghers Pub, Ocean Beach, CA
I love playing in San Diego. The people are great, the venues are fun and everyone loves to drink! This night was no exception. The lineup went as follows: Hoist the Colors, the Ramshackle Army, Lexington Field and the Fooks. Kirk from the Fooks was kind enough to open his house to all the bands for a pre show BBQ, which was great times! We hit the stage first, which was a relief, considering we didnt have to follow any of these guys! Although, we started rather early for a show at a bar, we still had a great time playing to those who were interested in seeing us.
The Ramshackle Army followed and immediately got the crowds attention. Gaz is a great front man, really putting everything he has into it while keeping really good pitch. Kat is incredible on the fiddle, Loc seems like he can play anything with strings on it, especially banjo and mandolin! Nathan shreds on guitar while also lending his vocal talents to the band, and Chris aka Jig, keeps a great rhythm on bass. The band is held together by the superior drumming of Adrian. The kid plays super clean. Put that together, and you get an amazing show like the one they put on in San Diego.
Lexington Field came on after, and really whipped the crowd into a manic state. The energy these guys have when they play is constant, and I have seen these guys a few times now. Beau knows how to reach the crowd, while Brian really wales on guitar. Cami plays at lightning speeds on fiddle, while Casey and Vince keep an absolutely clean rhythm section. Their set ended with their song "Tracy Boys", and Beau made the mistake of inviting the Hoist and Ramshackle crews to come up on stage to help them out which pretty much turned into a free for all! It was awesome!
The Fooks ended the night with some great cover tunes ranging from Flogging Molly to Rage Against the Machine! This weekend was great for all bands involved and its one that I will never forget. Not only did we get to hang with our good buddies, in Lexington Field, we also became great friends with The Ramshackle Army. I will always follow these guys because I know that they including Lexington Field, are destined for some great things.

DAY FOUR:

REVIEW - THE MAGGOTY BRATS "Danse Macabre" (2010)
The Maggoty Brats "Danse Macabre" Plague Records
Release date: December 30th 2010
Running time: 29:24, 10 tracks
The Maggoty Brats are a 6 guys band from Quebec (Canada) that sing in English. They define themselves as a folkabilly band. What does folkabilly mean? Let’s say a blend of rockabilly, country, bluegrass, punk and Irish folk music. Maybe it will be clearer if I mention English bands such as The Cropdusters and Macavity’s Cat.
Most of you should be familiar with “Rodeo”, the debut album by The Maggoty Brats, since it was posted here as a free download last January 8th. So, if you’re expecting something similar, then you’ll be surprised. “Rodeo” was more "punk" than “Danse Macabre”. No more Sham 69 sounding songs like “The Ballad of St. John’s Gate”, no more Blood or Whiskey sounding numbers like “The Tempest”, no more accordion and no more Irish standards. But, before you stop reading and think that “Danse Macabre” is not worth hearing, let me say that “Danse Macabre” is a better album than “Rodeo”.
I feel that the Rick’s vocals are far better on their second album, maybe because the production is better too. I find that sometimes he sounds like The Whisky Priests’ frontman Gary Miller and sometimes he sounds like Jello Biafra. I really love the way he sings. For instance, on the opening track “Renegade Shanty”, a catchy song featuring mandolin and whistle or on “Fire in Her Eyes” another song on which Rick plays tin whistle too.
I have also enjoyed “The Great Northern Class Safari” a Los Carayos meet Louise Attaque song on which Rick plays the kazoo at the end.
Other songs that stand out are “The Ghost of Bardy” and “Misbehavin’”. The former is a catchy song and the latter has great vocals, banjo and tin whistle.
The last track on the album is a re-recording of “Rodeo”. An excellent song that I imagine it could be found on any Enrique Bunbury’s solo album (ex-Heroes del Silencio)
It's obvious that The Maggoty Brats have evolved in the right way. If you like “live” bands, then try this Canadian outfit.

VIDEO - BELTAINE'S FIRE "Quit My Job"
The last video from the Californian folk-rap band Beltaine's Fire.
Song: Quit My Job
Album: Anarchitecture (http://beltainesfire.bandcamp.com/album/anarchitecture)
Band: Beltaine's Fire (http://www.beltainesfire.com and http://facebook.com/beltainesfire)
This one goes out to everyone who's ever had a job they hated and to all the shitty bosses who treat their employees like peons. Everyone has had a job like this at least once, the kind of job where no matter what you do, how hard you work, or how much you contribute your work goes completely unrecognized while the boss takes all the credit. And for the millions of working class folks who would be fired just for saying the word "Union" too loudly, sometimes the only option is to stand up, walk out that door, and keep walking until you find a better way to make a living.
Special thanks to Kerie, Annie, Al, Camile, and Cory for appearing in the video and to Charles and Stacy for shooting and producing it.
Lyrics:
i'm gonna quit my job, i'm gonna walk right out
and when the boss ask why i'm gonna let it all out
so there ain't no doubt i'm bout to put him in check
gonna quit my job, after the next paycheck
i spend my life at a desk tryna earn these checks
cash is king and it demands respect
need money to live, money to eat
money for a house or get out on the streetI repeat this mantra, memorize it
cant defeat this trap tho i despise it
a rat in a maze, chasin cheez
searchin for scraps, beggin please
i could do everything my boss does better
but he cant do half the things that i do
but he's in charge so he gets paid better
and i just scrape by and try to make do
forget that, i'm sick of this, i'm puttin in notice
they dont notice when i'm here
but when i'm gone? You bet they'll notice!
gon work on my art, blossom like a lotus
cuz i can do anything if i just focus
now, e'erybody's talking bout this recession
and unemployment's at an all-time high
and i know that I'll never find a job in my field
forget it, i'm done, not even gonna try
but I ain't gonna cry, that's just a waste o' time
instead I'm gon' wrap it all up in a rhyme
spit through the mic, call it thought-crime
make the music a movement so I can feel fine
I ain't lookin to a job to keep me fulfilled,
I am much more then a title and a check
so when people ask me "what do you do?"
I won't answer with a job the way they expect
I do the things that feel natural
so let me give an answer that's more factual:
I do what I gotta to keep my head up
and ---- the boss, cuz I'm totally fed up
my job sucks and I hate it
if you're job sucks, I bet you hate it too!
So if you're job sucks and you hate it
you got to tell me
come on and tell me
just tell me
what you're gonna do!
Gonna quit my job (walk right right out)
quit my job (and walk right out)
gonna quit my job! (walk right out)
quit my job and walk right out!
