2016-03-15 REVIEW - BODH'AKTAN "s/t" (2016)

Bodh'aktan "s/t" GOCD1601
Release date: February 19th, 2016
Running time: 36:08, 12 tracks

There are several bands that are stretching the boundaries of the genre and releasing essential albums. They are great musicians and little by little they are following the footsteps of the likes of Fiddler’s Green and headlining the main festivals in Europe. For instance, Paddy and The Rats, Firkin, Happy Ol’ McWeasel and Bodh’aktan.

The Quebecer band’s previous studio albums were ranked no. 4 at our Best of 2012 and no. 3 at our Best of 2013 lists. Last year they issued a full covers album titled “Mixtape (Covers)” in order to whet appetites for their third studio album in French. Or should we say the third "difficult" album?

Former Bodh’aktan’s albums have always included some traditional tunes, French traditional songs, one cover of Breton bands and/or some vocal guests. On Bodh’aktan’s self-titled third album the approach is different, since most of the tracks are originals and only a tune of “La suite de la capitale” is a traditional instrumental. Although the new CD is not a concept album, the front cover (depicting the band’s baggage at an airport) and three of the songs deal with the same subject: touring Europe.

The opening track is called “Grazie Mille”, that is, thank you very much in Italian. The chorus is then in Italian, English, German and French: “Grazie Mille / All my friends/Danke schön/À la prochaine”. The Quebecer band thanks all their European fans for the moments they shared with them. This upbeat number with a Fiddler’s Green twist thanks to the accordion is one of the hottest moments on the album.

The next track is titled “Ici” (“Here”).Once again, moments on Germany, The Netherlands, France and Italy are mentioned. Bodh’aktan have enjoyed their tours in Europe and all the friends they’ve made. But it’s always great to come back home.

Besoin d’air” (“Need to breath”) is the third track. It’s the first single off “Bodh’aktan”, an amazing punk-rock number with a Ramones vibe. Urban life vs seaside life. Love that tin whistle !!!

Come back to Europe, this time to Teuillac, near Bordeaux. Celti Teuillac is a festival that is held in July  and Bodh’aktan played there in 2015. Tin whistle, accordion and fiddle are showcased on this North American roots infused song.

Longtemps” is a toned down number featuring bagpipes that is followed by a short epic instrumental titled “Interlude (Lourde nuit)”.

Bodh’aktan “open hostilities” again with “Une autre nuit” (“Another Night”), a kick-ass song about a bartender’s life. Musically, the song is the bastard son of the early Mahones and Great Big Sea.

The sound goes harder with “André”, a fast-paced bagpipes punk number with an infectious sing-along chorus and fantastic guitar work.

Pourtant” (“However) is a ballad written by Bodh’aktan’s friend Keven Landry. Add some drops of Jacques Brel, some bagpipes, electric guitar and a Scorpions attitude and you’ll get “Pourtant”. That’s the magic of the alchemy.

Is it possible a Bodh’aktan album without a set of tunes? Of course not, they are a must have. Enjoy “La suite de la capitale”, another highlight on this CD.

The album is arriving to its end, but there are some surprises to be unveiled. Back to Europe again? Ben non. Let’s go to Lousiana !!! “Samedi soir au fait dodo” is the most festive number on the album, a badass Cajun/zydeco song. The next “Cotton Eyed Joe”? Sure

The last number is a poignant ballad reminiscent of De Dannan from the “Ballroom” era. Well balanced mix of tin whistle, fiddle and accordion, together with a brass section at the end. A true gem.

The album includes an 8 page booklet with all the lyrics to the songs, studio credits, songs credits, acknowledgments and contact info. Original bassist Rob Langlois recorded the album, but he’s left the band and the new bass player is Benoit Claveau, who also co-wrote the lyrics to a couple of songs on this CD (“Longtemps” et “Samedi soir au fait dodo”)

Bodh’aktan have done it again. Yes, the new album is not as perfect as its eldest brothers from 2011 and 2013. But Bodh’aktan have taken some risks instead of repeating a formula, and the final result is quite enjoyable. Another Top 10 album by Montreal’s finest !!!

2016-03-14 VIDEO - MENEGUINNES "Bergamo"

Meneguinnes video for "Bergamo", first single off their upcoming album "A chi non dorme".

2016-03-14 FREE DOWNLOADS - THE SWEET COLLEENS DISCOGRAPHY

The Sweet Colleens are a five-piece Celtic roots based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their style is called fiddle-fueled accordion-infused celtic-cajun folk pop.

The Sweet Colleens are Dave Bade, Rich Larson, Jeremy Greenhouse, Wolf Loescher and Pete Sandvik —accomplished multi-instrumentalists who together fuse their diverse musical backgrounds into a high-energy, infectious, and crowd-pleasing mix of “Celtic folk-rock and alt. country/Americana, with Cajun and Caribbean seasonings.” With infectious original songs, warm vocal harmonies, and fiery instrumental arrangements, the Sweet Colleens are winning a loyal local following and fans across the Midwest and beyond.

Ex-pat Canadian songwriter and fiddler Jeremy Greenhouse and Minneapolis accordionist Pete Sandvik put together a band for a Y2K New Year’s show at Kieran’s Pub in Minneapolis. The Colleens went on to establish themselves as the Twin Cities’ favorite pub band and -- since the release of the band’s debut CD "Flop" and its celebrated sophomore release "Half a Mile from Home" -- has expanded its audience through shows and festivals in the Midwest and even a 2-week jaunt to France.

The Sweet Colleens CD "Half a Mile from Home" showcases the band’s trademark musical dexterity with 16 tracks that draw on a remarkable range of roots music – feisty medleys of Irish and Canadian fiddle tunes, a raucous cover of The Pogues’ “Fall From Grace,” Cajun-tinged original songs featuring performances by Michael Doucet of BeauSoleil, a folk-rock ballad about Jesse James, a tender waltz featuring the Trinidadian steel drum, and a dozen energetic and raw alt-country original songs about love, life, death and everything in between – all pulled together into a seriously fun and uniquely Minnesotan sound.

The Sweet Colleens bring diverse musical backgrounds to bear on their truly unique folk-rock sound. Jeremy Greenhouse (vocals, guitar, fiddle, mandolin, harmonica), has recorded and performed extensively with Celtic, rock, Cajun and country acts in Canada, the U.S., and Europe. Pete Sandvik (accordion, piano, guitar, vocals), brings Cajun and rock influences, classically-trained dexterity, and a not-so-secret love for the Grateful Dead to his accordion playing with the Sweet Colleens. Dave Bade (bass, vocals) offers rock-solid bass during the Sweet Colleens live shows, and everything from bluegrass picking guitar solos to cello on their recordings. Finally, drummer Wolf Loescher’s style draws not only on the country-swing of his native Texas, but on the rich bagpipe-laced Celtic music of Scotland, where he lived for several years before founding the acclaimed Celtic-rock band Jiggernaut. Together, The Sweet Colleens offer a unique high-energy roots sound.

"The Monkey Dance: All the Kids Are Doin' It!" is the first foray into kids music by the Minneapolis-based Sweet Colleens, but the genre is clearly a natural fit for these good-natured denizens of the roots music world.

Released in January 2010 with two packed concerts to over 600 people at Minneapolis’s legendary Cedar Cultural Center, "The Monkey Dance" features more musical instruments than you could shake a banana at. The predominantly original songs range in style from funky to folky, Cajun to Caribbean, sad to sentimental to...well...just plain goofy. Special guests on the CD include The Minneapolis Youth Chorus and Michelle Campagne of the seminal French-Canadian folk-pop group Hart Rouge.

While "The Monkey Dance" is quickly winning over the under-10 crowd (not to mention minivan CD players everywhere), parents will also find themselves humming along to the Sweet Colleens’ sophisticated, rootsy arrangements—kids music that does it up right without dumbing it down. Happy listening... and don't forget your monkey-dancing shoes!

The Twin Cities’ Sweet Colleens have taken their genre-busting Celti-Cajun Folk-Pop sound to new heights with "Closer to the Sky". With their feet planted firmly in American-roots music, the Sweet Colleens bring a spirit of joy and adventure to their 4th studio release, embracing the intimate melodies of traditional folk, crafting bold musical arrangements, and harnessing the power of modern rock.

The 11 tracks on "Closer to the Sky" take listeners on a wild musical ride, bridging diverse styles with seamless integrity. And the band’s original songs and instrumentals travel a beautiful, broken world: from the Great Plains to the beaches of San Diego, from smoky Toronto nightclubs to Cajun dancehalls, from Irish pubs to a quiet street in Nordeast Minneapolis. With "Closer to the Sky", The Sweet Colleens have redefined their sound while staying true to the emotional core of their past.

2016-03-09 REVIEW - THE CLOVES AND THE TOBACCO "Across the Horizon" (2016)

The Cloves and the Tobacco "Across the Horizon" WLRV-006-2016
Release date: March 2nd, 2016
Running time: 40:22, 10 tracks

At last! The Cloves and The Tobacco, one of our favourite bands from Indonesia, have just released the follow-up to their debut album “The Day with No Sun”. And one thing is for sure: “Across the Horizon” is a killer album. The Cloves and The Tobacco have invested a lot of passion and musicianship on this CD and the result is outstanding: kick-ass songs, excellent arrangements, brilliant production and a top-notch digipack packaging.

Their latest offering consists of 9 original songs, together with a song written by the omnipresent David Watts aka Spider Mahone ("Too Much Trouble"). There are no covers, since “The Fields of Athenry” is used as a bridge on one of the tracks, but it’s not the main theme on the song.
From the first notes of the street punk opening track “Too Much Trouble” to the last instrumental number “Across the Horizon”, TCATT deliver a bunch of songs intended to share their lives and experiences with the Celtic punk fans from the 5 continents.

As it has been previously said, the album starts with “Too Much Trouble”. This song is an amazing Rancid infused number with catchy chorus and gang vocals. It’s followed by “You’ll Never Know”, a song with the TCATT classic sound based on hypnotic banjo picking, in yer face whistling and haunting fiddling.

Track number 3 is a personal fave: “When the War is Over” is a poignant ballad about love in the time of war with a The Pogues twist. The next song is catchy as hell: “Sally O’Riordan”, a tale about a working girl tribulations on a Monday morning. I’m sure that you’ll end up singing along when you listen to this number. The Cloves and The Tobacco don’t slow down with “The Whiskey Tales”, a song about themselves. The arrangements are fantastic on this well written song and every single member of the band shines. Nana Nofi guests on female vocals.

Pure & Innocent” shows the band’s quieter side. The lyrics are about the innocence of the children and how good it would be for the world if they could keep it when they grow up. The next track is titled “And the Rain Will Fall”, an upbeat song about a prisoner’s life.

The Town that We Love So Well” is another standout number, a badass song about a September night in their hometown, Yogyakarta. “The Old Harbor” is a song about emigration, a goodbye song. I love this kind of song. While “Far Away in Australia” has a happy end (“Now has come the time when I’m ready to welcome at last the girl I left behind”), “The Old Harbor” is an open-ended song. The album is over with the title track, “Across the Horizon”, an amazing instrumental.

The album packaging is a labour of love: the guys from WLRV Records always do a great job and this one is not an exception. Great 4 panel digipack with a 12 page booklet where all the lyrics and all the studio and song credits can be found. There are 2 thank you pages with a global band’s section and a section for every band member. The Cloves and the Tobacco thank the likes of Andries van den Broeck aka Dutch Irish Bastard, Cathy Shannon, Andrew Watts aka Spider Mahone, the people in charge of the main Celtic punk blogzines, podcasts and radio stations (Waldo Kinksmarkham from Celtic Folk Punk and More, Eddie from London Celtic Punks, Phil from Paddy Rock, Nico from MacSlon’s Irish Radio, Irish punk, Alex from Ukraine and Vladimir Kipelov from Russia), all the Celtic punk/Irish punk groups on Facebook (Indonesia, London, Brazil, Hungary, Denmark, Italia, Zaragoza), all the Celtic punk bands from Indonesia and a lot of Celtic punk / folk punk bands from all over the world.

The Cloves and The TobaccoAcross the Horizon” is a breath of fresh air for the Celtic punk scene. This album should be a Top Ten album at the end of the year, since it has all the things that fans should appreciate: hard work, modesty, a different Celtic approach, love and respect for others bands’ music and a feeling of community. Hats-off!!!

2016-03-08 FREE DOWNLOAD - THE JACK RATTS "Mothers Ruin"

The Jack Ratts second album "Mothers Ruin" can be downloaded for free from Soundcloud. Go ahead and download the tracks while the free download is available.

The band called its quits last December. Banjoist and accordionist Fabian is releasing his solo debut album "Tarheel" for tour.

Fabian Maddison is a well travelled and experienced musician, first taking to the stage at the age of 16, he has since gone to front a string of bands from straight out raucous punk to soothing folk.

Recently building his experience of festivals and gigs with The Jack Ratts and The Maddison Tarheels he is now taking to the stage as a solo artist.

Be prepared to be inspired as this young man gives a spectacular performance of traditional American old time and bluegrass, the message of which still bares as much relevance as ever in our modern society.

2016-03-06 REVIEW - RUSTY NAIL "Bitter Ale, Bitter Heart" (2016)

Rusty Nail "Bitter Ale, Bitter Heart"
Release date: March 1, 2016
Running time: 48:06, 11 tracks

Rusty Nail, the band from St. Louis,  have just delivered their third album: “Bitter Ale, Bitter Heart” The core of the band remains the same, Alvan Caby (mandolin, guitar and vocals), Kelly LaRussa (violin), Chad Ross (guitar, banjo, dulcimer, accordion, bouzouki, ebow and organ) and Chris Otto (Irish whistle and native American flutes) while the new members are Pete McAvity on electric guitar, Mark Hochberg on bass and Dennis Frentzel on drums.

The “inspiration thanks” on “Bitter Ale, Bitter Heart” give a hint to understand the bands’ sound: Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers and Black Sabbath. There are quite a few Celtic punk numbers, mainly at the beginning of the album, a couple of solid rock tracks and several mature efforts.

The album kicks off with “The Magician”, an amazing number where fiddle, mandolin, banjo and flute are perfectly backed by an excellent rhythm section. On the next track, “Return to the Start”, The Tossers influences can be felt. The mandolin/fiddle duel is just brilliant. And then comes “Giving Up”, the best number on the album and also a The Tossers infused number

It’s a Shame I did Nothing” is a rocking number with interesting flute arrangements and great performances by guitarist and rhythm section. The next tracks are proof of the band’s songwriting evolution. “Another Story of Unreturned Love” has an infectious theme. “Hardscrabbled Road” starts quietly, but have some fast-paced passages. “Liquid Miracles” is a perfectly written song featuring organ. “Central West End” shifts to the American classic rock universe. And “Mad as Birds” is a gem of a song, the best song together with “Giving Up”.

The album ends up with "The Nightmare Will Prevail", a song with interesting mandolin arrangements.

Bitter Ale, Bitter Heart” is housed in a four panel digipack. There is plenty of information (band’s pic, line-up, song credits, studio credits and thank yous, including a Special thanks to Samuel L. Jackson), but no lyrics to the songs. All lyrics have been written by Alvan Caby, except “Hard Scrabble Road”, by Chris Otto, and “Central West End” by Chris Otto and Alvan Caby. Multi-instrumentalist Chad Ross recorded and mixed the album, while Brad Somo (Blue Jade Audio) was in charge of the mastering.

Rusty Nail have released their most mature effort to date. And no cover or Irish standard can be found on “Bitter Ale, Bitter Heart”, only self-penned songs. Congrats guys (and girl)!

2016-03-01 WE'RE COMING BACK!

Yes, we’re coming back!!!

I’ve spent the last weeks listening to other music (oi!, ska and Irish and Scottish traditional bands), watching TV series, reading crime novels and walking. I intended to come back slowly after St. Patrick’s Day: a couple of posts before Easter and then regular posts in April. In the meanwhile, I’ve got quite a few albums to be reviewed and videos to be shared and I’ve revamped the blog’s layout.

I’ve been updating the 24/7 streaming radio and finally last week I’ve begun to listen to some of the stuff that I’ve got. So, taking into account that several bands have told me that they´re releasing their new albums next St. Patrick’s Day, I’ve thought that maybe it would be better to come back some weeks before my original plans. If I wait till the second half of the month, then I’ll have a lot of albums to review. But I don’t want to work under pressure or having deadlines anymore.

I’ve already developed some routines and I feel that I can find a place for listening to the stuff that have recently arrived. Now I intend to post an average of 4 reviews/month instead of 5-6. From now on, I’ll only review physical copies. No mp3 albums will be reviewed; they’ll be added to the streaming radio and they’ll be eligible for the Best of 2016, but they won’t be reviewed. Only physical copies will be reviewed.

Apart from that, no more Bands of the Month will be posted since I’ll focus on reviews, videos and free downloads. Thanks to the rainy and windy weekend, I’ve already scheduled all the videos that I’ve got and all the free downloads that I found before the break. Then, in the following weeks I’ll be working only on the reviews that will be posted along the month. So, this month’s posts will be a sort of a bridge and I guess that the blogzine will be working at full speed in April.

Sinceres apologies if I didn’t wish you a happy birthday on facebook, but I was not active. Thanks for your support and enjoy the new Celtic Folk Punk and More!
