REVIEW - THE CRAICHEADS "Brewed in London" (2014)

The Craicheads "Brewed in London"
Release date: 1 February 2014
Running time: 37:36, 9 tracks

We’re the Joyce Country Céili band / playing away and we’re doing grand / if we’re singing a song won’t you give us a hand / ‘cos we’re the Joyce Country Céili BandTheSawDoctorsSongs from Sun Street” (1998) track 9 “Joyce Country Céilí Band

I feel that these lines from a SawDoctors song are the best introduction to the Craicheads, a well-known live experience in the London Irish scene. The guys could have recorded a live show in a pub and the feeling would have been the same: fun, sweat, dance, happiness, fiddle, whistles, mandolin … “Brewed in London” is not a live album, but the live atmosphere is there. Most of the songs are covers. However they belong to that particular universe in which bridges are built between folk music from both sides of the pond. You know, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle but also Shane MacGowan and Pat Gallagher.

The two originals, “Take Me Back to Harrow” and “Sligo Shore” are great numbers. The former is a song about the London area in which they live and the latter is a lively instrumental about Co. Sligo.

Regarding the covers, I’ve enjoyed their rendition of Guns and Roses  (“Sweet Polka of Mine”) which has been merged with a couple of polkas. But, IMHO,  the most attractive numbers are the musical tributes to Donegal’s finest Goats Don’t Shave. A couple of songs from the band’s debut album “The Rusty Razor” (Gold Disc in Ireland) have been  covered:  “Mary Mary” and “Las Vegas (in the Hills of Donegal”). In fact, “Las Vegas (in the Hills of Donegal)” is the final part of a kick-ass medley at the end of the album together with  “Fields of Athenry” and  “Tell Me Ma”.

So, “Brewed in London” is a nice collection of songs that any busker should play, but also that any band playing at a pub next St.Patrick’s Day should play with a similar attitude. The Craicheads have shown that they are familiar with the Irish musical world. They do have an own sound and the right background; good stuff.

06 - Sligo Shore 2:14

REVIEW - FINNEGAN'S HELL "Drunk, Sick and Blue" (2014)

Finnegan's Hell "Drunk Sick and Tired" Heptown Records HTR071
Release date: 26 september 2014
Running time: 23:00, 10 tracks

Drunk, Sick and Blue”, the follow-up to Finnegan’s Hell self-titled EP was one of the most awaited albums of the year. The Swedish gang was able to deliver a kick-ass EP at the end of 2011 and their rendition of “Molly Maguires” is still considered as one of the highest Celtic punk moments at YouTube. As the guys have advanced a couple of numbers in the last 10 months (videos for “Drunken Christmas” and “Drunk, Sick and Blue”), I guess that nobody is wondering if  Finnegan’s Hell were only a one-hit wonder. After watching both videos, the answer is clear: NO, they are not a one-hit wonder, but a solid Celtic punk outfit and Finnegan’s Hell new material is brilliant.

Drunk, Sick and Blue” consists of 10 whiskey soaked songs on which booze is always present: a couple of numbers from the previous EP (“Jar of Porter” and “Molly Maguires”), a version of “Galway Races” and 7 self-penned songs. The band’s sound and punk attitude are awesome, but one feels that the album is a little bit short. Only 23 minutes! Come on guys, 12 songs is the right dose!
Anyway, the mix of electric instruments, accordion, banjo and/or tin whistle will make you jump and sing along in such a way that once the disc is over the walls will have to be painted again !!!

The songs that I’d pick up: the opening track “Drunk, Sick and Blue”, a song that will become a classic soon; “Reversed Evolution”, and amazing fast-paced Celtic punk anthem; “Drunken Christmas”, apparently the result of too much porter, some spins to Ashley HutchingsMorris on” LP and to The Clash song “Career Oportunities” (the “Sandinista!” version); the old number “Jar of Porter”; “Lullaby”, a sort of an outtake from The PoguesWaiting for Herb” sessions; “No Saint”, where the Devil’s life is more attractive than the God’s one; and, obviously, “Molly Maguires”.

The album is packed on a 3 panel digipack where all the lyrics to the original stuff and the credits can be found, together with some pics.

The new wave of Scandinavian Celtic punk bands that I mentioned on my Finnegan’s Hell EP review has  finally arrived. Rovers Ahead and Finnegan’s Hell  are here and they have come to stay. The drakkars keep on sailing, and more bands are ready to conquer the Celtic punk realm (Captain’s Jack Army, Punk Mahone …). In the meanwhile, let’s enjoy Finnegan’s Hell Drunk, Sick and Blue

Tracklist:

01 - Drunk, Sick and Blue 1:42
02 - Jar of Porter 2:22
03 - Lullaby 2:29
04 - Galway Races 1:54
05 - Whiskey Darling 2:39
06 - The Molly Maguires 2:22
07 - Promises and Lies 2:53
08 - Reversed Revolution 1:56
09 - No Saint 2:19

VIDEO - LEVELLERS (feat. FRAK TURNER) "Julie"

Frank Turner's spellbinding collaboration with the Levellers on their 1993 single 'Julie' has today been released on YouTube.

Whilst more than 20 years old, the song's gritty message about dispossession in society feels more relevant today than ever.

One of the Levellers' best loved songs, 'Julie' has been re-worked by Frank Turner in his own style, with the Levellers performing as his backing band. Frank is a huge Levellers fan and Julie was one of his favorite songs to play whilst growing up.

Julie is the latest video in the series which also include collaborations with Imelda May, Billy Bragg and Bellowhead. All four tracks appear on all versions of Levellers' Greatest Hits album released on Monday 29th September.

Levellers also embark on an extensive UK tour this Autumn; The Selecter and She Makes War will support on all dates.

REVIEW - THE SUNDAY PUNCHERS Self-titled debut (2014)

The Sunday Punchers "Self-titled", self-released (2014)
Release date: 9 August 2014
Running time: 45:14, 13 tracks

Which are South African main icons apart from Nelson Mandela? Maybe the Big Five at Kruger National Park (the buffalo, the elephant, the leopard, the lion and the rhino) and the Springboks (South African national rugby team). And what do The Sunday Punchers have in common with them (apart from being South African, of course)? Perhaps the wild attitude on their sound and the fact that they can compete with their Aussie, English, French, Irish, Scottish and Welsh counterparts.

After having released in 2013 a two track single with new material and a compilation putting together their previous material, the band from Gauteng has finally released their proper debut album. The CD includes 6 classic songs from their repertoire, 6 new self-penned songs and a cover of Dropkick MurphysI’m Shipping Up to Boston”. The classics are new recordings of “Whalefishers” (Salt Lake Whalefishers cover), “Guinness”, “Whiskey” and “Exile of a Broken Man” and the single “Golden Sun”/”Sea Monsters”. The new songs are titled “Graveyard Swagger”, “March of the Drunkards”, “Ol’ Dear Laddy”, “Away from Myself”, “Hoist Thy Colours” and “Dragon’s Lair”.

The album has all the elements that define the band’s sound: sea songs and booze numbers,  lion roaring vocals by Mostert, addictive banjo picking by Shaun and kick-ass accordion by Hewie. But the main difference with old recordings is the guitar work by Mike on the production and final mix. The song where this is clearer is “Hoist thy Colours”.

From the very beginning The Sunday Punchers get the listener’s attention with the catchy “Graveyard Swagger”. “Guinness” keeps on being a highlight on the band’s catalogue. “Whiskey” will make you sing-along together with the drunken gang. “Dear Ol’ Laddy” is a dancing pisstake with more drunken vocals. And “Shipping Up to Boston” is faithful to the original.

However,  the new numbers showcase a different end of the band that was already present on “Sea Monsters” and “Golden Sun”  (love this song and the female vocals by Bianca Henning ). For instance, the aforementioned “Hoist thy Colours”, but also the mid-tempo “Away from Myself”, and the bagpipes punk tune “Dragon’s Lair

Unexpectedly, The Sunday Punchers have recently decided to call it a day due to musical differences. Anyway, I’m borrowing  Mensi’s words from 1983 when Angelic Upstarts broke-up:  don’t think that you’ve seen the last of The Sunday Punchers, they shall return. In what shape or form they haven’t decided yet. In the meanwhile, grab a copy of the band’s testament before it becomes a sought-after item at e-bay, since it’s an essential album to understand the globalization of the Celtic punk scene.

REVIEW - DEN RAW FOLK "Urban Romance" (2014)

Den Raw Folk is a “family” band from Dunkirk, in the North of France. Nowadays they are a five piece band, but their debut album was recorded by the Rocher brothers (Den and Fred) and their niece/daughter Marine. Den played acoustic and electric guitars and sang lead vocals; Fred played mandolin, guitars, banjo, keyboards, percussions, accordion and sang backing vocals; and Marine played bass, drums, percussions and sang backing vocals too. The guest list on the album includes Brenda Rocher on backing vocals, Rodrigue Babdor on lead vocals (“La Zoukinite”), Simone André on trombone, Sébastien Curveiller  on tenor and alto saxes and Bruce Caulier on trumpet.

French fans should be familiar with the Rocher bros., since they were members of the seminal punk rock outfit Sub Kids. Sub Kids released some singles in the eighties and made it to some important compilations, mainly “Chaos in France Volume 1”, the bible of the French punk/oi French regional scenes. Their new band, Den Raw Folk, blends pub rock, Celtic punk, Caribbean beats (from Jamaica and French Antilles) and punk rock. The sound and attitude is that of a band from the XXI century, but I feel that they draw inspiration from the eighties. Most of the bands pull their influences from the likes of Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys and Rancid. However, Den Raw Folk go to the original source: The Clash, Stiff Little Finger, The Pogues and The Men They Couldn’t Hang.

The album is really tight and well-balanced. There are 9 self-penned songs and 4 covers. Although the Sub Kids used to sing in English, “Urban Romance” lists songs in French and songs in English. The band’s roots are obvious on the first numbers, “Belfast Song”, a composition in French with a The Men They Couldn’t Hang sound, and “Kerry Polka”, a standard tune on The Pogues live sets as a part of “South Australia”.

The next song, “Les Filles du Quai” is also sung in French. It’s another song with an American twist. Track four is and amazing instrumental, a sort of a Pogues outtake from the “Rum Sodomy and the Lash” sessions. “Maritime Bar” is a reggae whose dub version can be found at the end of the disc , “Maritime Dub”. Jonathan Richman’s  Egyptian Reggae” gets a Black Market Clash treatment. “Fishermen” is an old Sub Kids punk-rock number. And “Purple Turtle” is a song with reggae vibes about the brothers first contacts with the music world.

Den Raw Folk pay a further tribute to their heroes, The Pogues, covering the band’s classic “If I Should Fall from Grace with God”. The following number , "La Débrouille" is another awesome cow punk instrumental. “La Zoukinite” is an addictive  zouk number  And, finally, “Hopak” is a mandolin driven rendition of one of The Ukranians greatest hits.

As it has been mentioned, Den Raw Folk are now a five piece band with the addition of a fiddler and a drummer.  Urban Romance” is an interesting starting point for a long career. Roots, Rock, Reggae. We want more!

02 - Kerry Polka 1:47
