REVIEW - BENJAMINGS CLAN "Století Páry" (2013)

Benjaming's Clan "Století Páry" self-released
Released date: July 2013
Running time: 48:01, 15 tracks

The bagpipes punk family band from Petrikovice has grown up. The three brothers and their father decided that their music should take a new direction. A new member jumped in (Jacek: banjo, 12 string guitar, slide guitar, tin whistle) and the band’s name was changed from Benjaming Band to Benjaming’s Clan.

The band’s new motto is clear: “Pipes Energy Folk”. “Století Páry” consists of a couple of instrumentals (Intro and Outro), new tracks such as “In Vino Veritas”, new renditions of old compositions (“Americké Popelníky”, “Karavánek” …) and well-known songs and tunes (“Can Can”, “Jesse James” …) There is a  new sound and new arrangements but the same attitude: fun, fun and more fun.

The opening track “Intro: Rowan Tree/High Road to Garloch” and the closing number “Benjaming’s Jig” are two interesting pipes and drums sets. “Cestovatel” is an “Irish Rover” cover in Czech whose main points are the banjo and fiddle arrangements.

Americké Popelníky” is given a new lease of life and the final result is quite good

Karavanek” and “Ve jeménu krále”, originally on “Zhor!”, have been re-recorded in a different way. The former is slower, featuring tin whistle, mandolin and na-na-na backing vocals; the latter is a banjo and pipes faster version with amazing drums.”Irská Hospoda”, from the same album, gets a slower treatment too.

Guest fiddler Grzegorz Dabrowski also plays on “Jesse James” and “Morský vlk”.  The other guest is Kamil Pietrowiak, who plays jews harp on “Roklinka”. This song, whose original version was on “Americké Popelníky”, features awesome drumming, pipes and banjo.

Taking into account the CD sales after the gigs, it can be said that the fans are appreciating the band’s new approach. A bagpipes punk band is gone, but a bagpipes rock band has arrived.

Tracklist:

01. Intro (Rowan Tree, High Road To Gairloch) 1:30
02. Americké Popelníky 3:05
03. Cestovatel 3:46
04. In Vino Veritas 3:57

NEWS - THE RAMSHACKLE ARMY RELEASE NEW SINGLE

Melbourne Australia’s Celtic punks The Ramshackle Army have announced the release of "Anchors Aweigh", the first single off their forthcoming album "Letters From The Road Less Travelled".

The release is the first for the band since singles "Rue The Day" and "We Are Melbourne!" (theme song written and performed for Melbourne’s ice hockey team The Melbourne Ice) both in 2012, and signals the first trip into the studio with new banjo/mandolin player Josh Aveling.

The band have been tied to the studio over the last 2 months, namely Head Gap Studios in Preston (VIC), with Loki Lockwood (who’s production credits include Brothers Grim and Graveyard Train). Since the recording of their debut EP “Life Lessons and Drunken Sessions” in 2011, the band have assembled an extensive list of tracks, a cross section of which have made it to the album. “This has been a very different process for us” says vocalist Gaz Byrne, “Loki is a lover of tape, and recording this way has given the songs a bit of that organic singalong sound that we were after, but it made damn sure we were on our game. We love a number of bands Loki has worked with and they have a totally different vibe
to us, meaning different experiences behind the desk.” On working with Lockwood, “We were warned he’ll push to get something out of you, and we’d like to think we took on the challenge. The whole process has been a massive learning experience and we think that some of the songs are a different but fun direction for the RSA”.

To kick off the promotion and spread the word of the forthcoming album, the band have chosen to release "Anchors Aweigh", an upbeat, high energy tune, and paired it with a B-Side “re-imagining” of The Pogues’ "Boys From The County Hell".

Taking a break from mixing and mastering duties, the RSA are throwing a single release party show on Cup Eve (Mon 4th Nov) at the John Curtin Hotel, Carlton. Joining the party in support of the RSA are long time Melbourne Celt Punk stalwarts The Go Set. Having themselves spent time this year touring Europe and following up with a national tour alongside Canada’s own crazy Celt punks the Real McKenzies, The Go Set are taking a breath, reloading and helping mates the RSA celebrate the event. Rounding out the line-up are up and coming blue collar punk rockers, I Am The Riot, who in the vein of the Gaslight Anthem, Against Me! and the Boss, bring an earnestness to the stage, while A Commoners Revolt open the night with a raw, unapologetic folk punk blast.

The Ramshackle Army have finished tracking, and continue to work through the sound, mood and method of delivery for "Letters From The Road Less Travelled". In the meantime "Anchors Aweigh/Boys From The County Hell" will be available online from iTunes and the Ramshackle Army BandCamp on Friday, 1 November.

Stayed tuned for further release and tour details!

REVIEW - JASPER COAL "Drowning the Shamrock" (2013)

Jasper Coal "Drowning the Shamrock" Self-released
Release date: September 14th, 2013
Running time: 31:41, 10 tracks

Jasper Coal is a six piece band from Birmingham, Alabama.: Jeremy Burns (bass, banjo, vocals), Ian Hoppe (guitar, vocals), Miggy Martinez (drums), Ryan Morrison (bagpipes, whistle, vocals), Kevin Nicholson (fiddle, vocals) and Matt Parrish (lead vocals, tin whistle). They have just released their third album “Drowning the Shamrock”, that features basically traditional material from Ireland, Scotland and even Brittany.

The band is proud to have developed their own sound: they have tried to blend the usual Celtic punk influences (The Pogues, Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly) with the spirit of the great Celtic bands from the 70’s. They mention Tannahill Weavers, Planxty and The Bothy Band. I agree with The Tanahill Weavers, but I find more Battlefield Band than Planxty or The Bothy Band, and even a Chieftains twist on "Ye Jacobites by Name"

The songs that I would pick up: “Jamie Raeburn”, an excellent rendition based on the pipes and fiddle with interesting backing vocals; “The Andro Set” and “The Big Jig Set”, two amazing sets of tunes;  “Gather Up The Pots”, the well-known “Hills of Connemara” lyrics with a different tune (Mari Mac?); and “Johnnie Cope”, a number closer to Scottish versions rather than Planxty’s version. Those who love straightforward Celtic punk will appreciate “Crooked Jack” and those who enjoy quieter moments will love the a capella version of “The Parting Glass”.

Tracklist:

01. Step It Out Mary 3:10
02. Jamie Raeburn 4:31
03. Crooked Jack 2:52
04. The Andro Set 3:42
05. Gather Up the Pots 1:40
06. Ye Jacobites By Name 2:47
07. Big Jig Set 3:07
08. The Foggy Dew 3:11
09. Johnnie Cope 4:06
10. The Parting Glass 2:48

SAD NEWS - DRAZZLE FROM PADDY O'PUNK PASSED AWAY YESTERDAY

Last week a great musician passed away, Phil Chevron. We were still stunned when we read the following news on facebook yesterday:

"This is Scott's (Drazzle´s) wife, Annie Rasile : To all of my husband's facebook friends that he loved so dearly, it is with a broken heart to tell you that he passed away suddenly this morning around 5am in the emergency room (aortic dissection). This is a shock to all of his family and friends. I can't believe this has happened. Please keep us all, especially our daughter, Veronica Rasile in your prayers."

Drazzle was a beloved father and husband. For the Celtic Punk community, he was the host of a kick-ass radio show/podcast: Paddy O'Punk. Drazzle did a great job and supported new bands from all over the world. These are some comments from  bands that he helped:

Craic:

"A very dear friend of ours and such a great guy has passed away this morning, Drazzle from the Paddy O'Punk show on Real Punk radio . Please keep his wife and daughter in your thoughts. Keep punk rock alive in the heavens Drazzle. We will miss you dearly! We owe a lot of our success to him."

Brett M. Burlison (Craic member):

"Keep punk rock alive in the heavens Drazzle! Craic will miss you!!!"

"We are all broken up! So very sad."

Timmy Clausing (craic member) :

"RIP BIG MAN!!! Paddy O'Punk host on Real Punk Radio and Cleveland punk legend David Scott Rasile aka Drazzle passed away.... He was a very close friend to the members of Craic. We own much of our success to him! He was a very kind and gentle guy. I will so very much miss him!! My thoughts and prayers to his wife Annie Rasile and daughter Veronica Rasile."

"Fucking broken hearted about Drazzle. I am really going to miss him. It's a damn shame, he was one of the nicest guy to ever come into my life. He let co-host his show with him from his house, he came to our shows, we drank together. We lost a friend. Really sucks. Please remember him, his daughter Veronica and wife Annie."

The Ramshackle Army:

"Sad news in the international Celt punk world as David Rasile (Drazzle) was unexpectedly taken today, far too early. Known as the the host of Paddy O'Punk Podcast on Real Punk Radio he had always been a massive supporter of the RSA and all of us in this worldwide scene. As both artists and music lover we are fortunate to have gentlemen like Drazzle to show us what the world has to offer.

Our hearts go out to his wife Annie and daughter Veronica."

Brick Top Blaggers:

"Condolences from Brick Top Blaggers. Always sad when we lose a major supporter of the movement."

Jay Stevens (Between The Wars):

"What? Oh hell."

A special tribute tomorrow:

Kristi Webber:

"A very bittersweet show on Wednesday. My friend Drazzle (David Scott Rasile) is the Featured Listener this week and I feel like it was truly a gift that he sent his song selections a little early. He passed away unexpectedly yesterday morning. My show Wednesday will feature the songs he chose to play for this episode and I will also be playing some tracks he got me into that I have enjoyed since I met him as a listener in 2010. I will be playing some regular One Less Worry music but I also plan to mostly highlight some favorite songs I heard on Music From The Farside, Paddy O'Punk and Coffee Time With Drazzle. These were Drazzle's 3 online shows and he put so much effort and music appreciation into all of them.

Drazz was a great person to have known in this life and I wanted to do something more for this show since he was already a part of this episode! We are all so devastated at his loss as he was taken much too quickly from this life. A doting father and husband, beloved friend, awesome DJ and radio mentor and teacher and supporter of his fellow DJs, a hard-working union man... he really impacted so many folks and made a lot of friends in this world. He had the kind of disposition and laidback, natural talent for being a good person that drew so many people in and really made you want to be a better, more kind individual.

Cheers and I hope to play the songs he enjoyed to make people smile, share memories and give others an idea of the music he really loved playing for people! You can visit http://www.midwesternskirt.com/one-less-worry.html for broadcast info."

Here are the details of Drazzle's funeral arrangements.

In Memory of DAVID SCOTT RASILE, age 48, went home to heaven on October 13, 2013. Scott was born on March 5, 1965 in Cleveland. Loving husband of Annie (nee Naglic); devoted father to Veronica; beloved son of Vito and the late Jean (nee Mehnert); dear brother of Robin McHugh (Don) and Barry (Kimberley); cherished son-in-law of Dragica “Carol” Naglic; treasured brother-in-law, nephew, uncle, great uncle, cousin and friend to so many who loved him dearly. For over 25 years Scott was a Journeyman for Pipefitters Local Union 120. He also was a DJ on RealPunkRadio.com. He hosted 3 shows and was known as “Drazzle” and had many listeners from all over the world. Friends received at DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS, 28890 CHARDON RD. REVIEW - THE DEAD RABBITS "Tiocfaidh Ár Lá (Our Day Will Come)"

The Dead Rabbits "Tiocfaidh Ár Lá - Our Day Will Come" Wayward Parade
Release date: September 24, 2013
Running time: 29:37, 12 tracks

It’s not easy to be original in the Celtic punk scene. Some bands have been able to offer a different approach, using traditional instruments together with electric guitars, bass and drums, but playing folk punk music that is not really Celtic. Some of these bands would be The Wages of Sin, The Zydepunks and, above all, The Dreadnoughts.

The Dead Rabbits, the band from Houston, state that they are a Celtic punk band with a Texan twist. To tell you the truth, I don’t feel that they are the average Celtic punk band. In fact, I would place them together with the aforementioned bands.

Banjo, mandolin, fiddle and accordion can be heard on this fantastic album.  If The Skels spent some years in the South, they would write a number like “Hold Your Breath”. Listen to “Feelin’ Regret” , “The Race”, “Intermission” or “Porno Stash” and you’ll feel that The Dead Rabbits are the US answer to Smokey Bastard. “Feelin’ Regret” is a kick-ass composition. It seems that the song is over, but they come back. On the other hand, “The Race” has a Beatles sounding chorus, a folk punk attitude and a slow end. “Intermission” is a short number with a ska part at the end.

The Dreadnoughts shadow can be seen on “Fuck  No Snake”, “Jackson’s Polka” and “Hempen Jig”. “Fuck No Snake” has a bal mussette accordion beginning, “Jackson’s Polka” is a sort of a Mano Negra goes polka song featuring a brass section and “Hempen Jig” is maybe the most Eastern European number.

Finally, two awesome numbers have to be mentioned:  the bluegrass infused “Blood Runs” and the Between the Wars sounding song “Wexford Girl”.

Do you love Swaggering Growlers, Garrahan’s Ghost or The Roughneck Riot? Then go ahead and buy The Dead RabbitsTiocfaidh Ár Lá”. Maybe more polka than Celtic, but a lot of fun. And that’s what you’re looking for, aren’t you?

Tracklist:

01 - Hold Your Breath 2:38
02 - Feelin' Regret 4:10
03 - Doin' Time 1:42

REVIEW - THE SCARLET "Demo" (2013) AND FREE DOWNLOAD

The Scarlet - Demo
Release date: September 2013
Running time: 11:20, 4 tracks

The Hungarian Celtic punk scene is quiet active. Apart from the heavyweights (Firkin and Paddy and The Rats) different young bands are recording their own material: last year LochNesz and now The Scarlet.

The five piece from Budapest, together with a guest on fiddle,  has recently released a four track demo. The instrumentation is closer to Firkin (the flute plays a major role), but the attitude is maybe more Paddy and The Rats, for instance on “Sail Eternally”. The sound is also in line with other young European bands such as Cheers!.

Tracks to check out: “Night on the Fairies” and the catchy song “Addicted to Beer”. By the way, have I said that all of the songs can be downloaded for free?

2 - Night of The Fairies 2:39

BAND OF THE MONTH - DARVRA'S WAVE

The band of October 2013 comes from London: Darvra's Wave.

"The name Darvra’s Wave derives from the mythological Irish fairytale ‘The Children Of Lir’ as in the story it was upon Darvra’s Wave that the King’s four children were selfishly and deliberately turned into swans by their wicked Stepmother.

The band formed in 2008 and under various names and lineups have been performing around London and developing their own music and sound. Two members of the band are the writers behind the music and both are very distinctive and different but compliment each other well leading to a diverse creative celtic sound. Though all are experienced folk musicians and half the band have Irish connections they use their ideas and concepts from other genres such as jazz, classical, rock and pop to influence their overall progressive performance. For the listener there is something for everyone and the band are certainly not a one trick pony."

"Darvra’s Wave formally known as London Irish Band perform regularly around London and the UK and are soon to release their debut album ‘The Witches Recall.’ Their celtic rock sound is both modern, rhythmic and electric as well as acoustic, soulful and ambient and the new album features both songs and instrumentals composed by two contrasting writers in the group."

REVIEW - IRISH MOUTARDE "Raise'Em All" (2013)

Irish Moutarde "Raise 'Em All" self-released
Release date: September 17, 2013
Running time: 40:00, 12 tracks

When you get an album from Canada, your life is happier. Obviously, there are some places that add something special. A band from the Maritimes? Yes, please. A band from Glengarry County? Great!. A band from Quebec? Mais bien sûr!

I guess that every Celtic punk fan in the world has been awaiting Irish Moutarde’s debut album. The single that was released last year, “The Bear and The Maiden Fair”, became soon an Internet download success story. And all of us were waiting for more. Expectations were high and the guys and girl from La belle Province have not failed. In fact, “Raise’em All” is called to be one of the albums of the year.

Which are the things that make Irish Moutarde different?

First of all, vocals are shared by a guy and a girl (Andrée-Anne McHalley). Secondly, they have 3 fantastic songwriters: Mathieu Audet (rhythm guitar, vocals), Dominic Haerinck (banjo, acoustic guitar, tin whistle, cittern, harp, vocals) and Sébastien Malenfant (drums, vocals). Thirdly, they have a brilliant piper, Christian Haerinck and an excellent guitarist, Jérôme Bélanger.

On this album most of the songs are original. “The Fields of Athenry”, "The Wearing and the Green”  and the pipes tune “Lord Lovat’s Lament” are the traditional numbers that have been covered. By the way, only one song is sung in French, “Olaf”, a tribute to their mascot, a green Irish giraffe.

So let’s talk about some of the songs. “The Black Mill” is a kick-ass song featuring pipes. Listening to this track and to track no. 3, “The Cabin”, Irish Moutarde can be linked to the band from Barcelone Drink HuntersDrink Hunters are more Bad Religion and Irish Moutarde are maybe more NOFX, but both bands have that So-Cal twist.

Farewell to Drunkenness” is a drinking song on which the guitar work is really superb. The sound, as usual, is based on banjo, guitar and pipes. The last part of the number is the well-known tune “John Ryan’s Polka” and Sébastien drumming is awesome too.

I have really enjoyed “I Heard Jesus Was”, a funny number going from metal to blues.  Maybe bigots don’t like the lyrics.

Glasses to the Sky” is a DKM style ballad with amazing guitar and woah woah chorus at the end. BTW, the album’s title has been lifted from this song.

I love “Olaf”; the influence is perhaps more RMcK than DKM and the Scottish sounding pipe tune is haunting! Besides, the following number, “LLL” is bagpipes punk at its best.

A Lad and a Hag” is a self-penned  song, but it sounds like an old traditional song. The beginning (flute and piano) is perfect. And when they speed up the tempo, the pipe theme is top-notch too

Irish Moutarde’s piper is a Black Tartan Clan fan and the band from Belgium also supports Irish Moutarde. I wouldn’t say that both bands have the same sound, but one thing it’s true: they have a strong identity, similar instrumentation, high quality musicianship and originality. So you won’t be surprised when both of them will be rated at the top of the “best of 2013” lists.
