THE TOSSERS- Live at the Szene, February 23, 2008
(Taken from Wikipedia)
The Tossers are a six-piece Celtic punk band from Chicago, Illinois. They formed in the early 1990s and have a large cult following, and have recently started to move into the spotlight. They have toured with Lost City Angels, Murphy's Law, Streetlight Manifesto, Catch 22, Dropkick Murphys, The Reverend Horton Heat, Flogging Molly, and most recently Street Dogs. They opened for The Pogues in New York City on St. Patrick's Day, 2007.
The band pre-dates more well-known Celtic punk bands such as the Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly, which formed in 1996 and 1997, respectively. Their last full-length, entitled "On a Fine Spring Evening", was released on October 28, 2008."

THE MEN THEY COULDN'T HANG - Devil on the Wind (Irregular Records)
Veteran Folk Rockers, The Men They Couldn’t Hang are back with some all new material in their newest release, Devil On The Wind, their fifteenth since the band’s formation way back in 1985.
The Men They Couldn’t Hang have always created a vaguely dream-like atmosphere with their music, going from toothy and aggressive, with songs like the foreboding title track, and the scary, campfire-appropriate monster tale, The Beast of Brechfa, to melodic, sweet stories of times past, like Mrs. Avery or Heartbreak Park.
The years have not changed the band’s cleanly identifiable sound, either, and all of those elements are in full effect here. The subtly country/alt. rock, peppered with folk instrumentation and all done with crystal clear production that allows every note, word, and beat to be heard with perfect clarity.
That aforementioned instrumentation, augmenting the band’s regular line-up, consists of guests on violin, squeezebox, banjo, harmonica, trumpet, Uilleann pipes, piano, mandolin and dulcimer. And although TMTCH’s punk edges and burrs seem to have been worn into a more seasoned and polished sound over the years, this variety of instruments gives a greater depth to the assortment of sounds and moods on Devil on The Wind.
It is difficult to categorize or classify the sound of The Men They Couldn’t Hang with any accuracy, unless one has heard TMTCH. If you have, then Devil On The Wind may be something you should look into. It is (yet another!) strong addition to this long-running band’s impressive catalog!

FIRKIN - Firkinful of Beer (Universal Music Kft., 2009)
Before anything else, I think it needs to be acknowledged that “Firkin” is a great name for a band. It has a great, antiquated, British Isles pedigree. As a unit of measure, (meaning roughly nine gallons!) it has a vague “mass consumption” reference. And, of course, all that Firkin’ wordplay just Firkin’ waitin’ to be employed!
But a great name doesn’t mean a firkin’ thing if the band can’t back it up.
And Firkin? Yeah. They bring it. Intense is probably the most appropriate word to describe these rowdy Hungarians. The CD, “A Firkinful Of Beer” (Firkinful?) is a 17-track release, (Yes, I said SEVENTEEN!) comprised of almost all covers, (with two or three originals, added in for color!) But these covers are different from your phone-in album-filler, there is effort made to make these songs the band’s own. A lot of effort.
The covers vary from traditionals like “The Galway Races,” “Irish Rover,” and “The Drunken Sailor,” to a number of songs from the Flogging Molly catalog! And all of the originals, traditionals and FM covers get the same Firkin’ treatment, (see how well that works!): A ripping, King-esque vocals, traditional instrumentation such as flute, fiddle, and whistle bringing in the Celtic sound and all of that hanging on for its dear life on top of a straight-up heavy metal rhythm section that is, in my opinion, the real star of the show. This is what gives these firkers an identity that really stands out in a field like this!
As far as covers go, the Budapest-based septet does the job right. But I would really like to see a full-length release of original material from these guys! I think it would be something really unusual, in a good Firkin’ way.

This is the first sampler of the year. I'm sorry for the delay, but I feel that the quality of the bands was worth waiting.
As I wrote previously, I have changed the name of the sampler.
1) The first band was one of my best of 2009 choices. I bought both EPs from Interpunk and I must say that I loved those guys straightaway. Recently I posted the review that Chris wrote, so I guess that we are not the only ones that are waiting for more Dirty Filthy Mugs songs.

"The Gentlemen are an 8 piece Celtic Punk band from Morgantown, West Virginia who combine traditional Irish folk with American punk rock. In the 3 years they have been together they have opened for the likes of Mustard Plug, The Toasters, and The Bouncing Souls, toured up and down the East Coast with sold out shows in their own town, and in May of 2009 released their first full length album "Stick To Your Guns". The Gentlemen demand your attention with high energy performance levels needed to draw large crowds and produce a great sound. DRINK HUNTERS - 4 track demo (2009)
I was a little worried by the name of the band Drink Hunters. I was afraid it was going to be a band that perpetuates the tired, old boozehound stereotype by pumping out track after track of some drinking songs or rehashing old standards like “Whiskey in the Jar,” “All For Me Grog” or “The Drunken Sailor.” The title of the lead off number, “Drinking Song” didn’t help with this apprehension.
I gave it a spin, though, and was pleasantly surprised. Even with a chorus of “I love whiskey, I love beer,” as my first taste of the band, I had to admit it was a damned catchy little ditty. And in fairness, it is the only one of the four numbers on this demo that chases this philosophy.
Instrumentally, the Spanish quintet are made up of a pretty tight rhythm section of guitar, bass, and drums, with a frenetic fiddler sitting on top driving the thing. The whole sound is fleshed out and rounded off nicely by the accordion. The instruments work really well with one another and topped off with vocals that are very similar to those of The Real McKenzies. That comparison may have colored my initial impression, but with subsequent listenings and further scrutiny, I think that is probably the best basis of comparison for The Drink Hunters, sans bagpipes of course.
As a demo, the sound quality can be a bit, well, inconsistent, but I believe a good impression of what this band is about is captured here on these four tracks. I think my favorite track is the song, “It’s In Your Hands.” It has all the race and pace of any other punk clubbers in the genre but seamlessly saddles some nice Celtic-feeling fiddle across the top and even sneaks in a little Cajun spice with some ever-so-subtle accordion work midway through.
In the end of the all-too-short demo, I found myself enjoying every song offered here, and will be keeping an eye out for more from The Drink Hunters.
And hey, maybe the name will grow on me.

DIRTY FILTHY MUGS - "Half Pint"/"Another Round" (BRRAPP, 2009)
The Dirty Filthy Mugs may be a relatively young band, (less than a year old!) but consists of seasoned veterans of the Los Angeles punk scene. And in their short time together, the band has put out two EPs in 2009, “Half Pint” and “Another Round.”
It is difficult to chart the growth of a band who put out two EPs in so close a period of time. Half Pint was the band’s debut, yet it is a pretty finished and polished piece of work. An in-your-face collection of songs tailor-made for a frantic night out with booze and good company.
Another Round is the follow-up EP, that, although, follows the same Dirty, Filthy formula, contains six songs that really stand out! Some great material, (with a killer title track being my personal favorite!) and not a dog in the pack.
The Dirty Filthy Mugs’ music is a straightforward and aggressive street punk, with some stadium-style guitar-work amped-up to the appropriate punked-out velocity and laced with some occasional accordion, giving a vaguely Celtic feel to it. The music on both EPs clearly gives an indication of the band’s energy, and if I hear of any shows in the Boston area, I will surely be in the crowd! These Mugs are the real deal and this is some good stuff.
Also, according to their MySpace page, a new Mugs release, entitled “All Yobs In,” is due out early in 2010!

"Oooh you lovely,
Right, I've said the album is going to be hot hot hot. To prove the point I spent all night listening to rough cuts and touching myself. Yes, it is going to be that kind of album.
Gran E. Smith is tied to the mixing desk making sure that the sound is just as you like it. We're also messing around with the album design. Loads of "not sure", "what do you think", "that should be a) higher b) lower c) black" and "**ck you, you don't know what the **ck you're talking about you **ckwit", and all that. But its fun and we are getting there.
Thanks to all the bastards and travelling bastards involved, undercover bastards, and all the unsung bastards who are pitching in. You are real bastards.
Japanese and German dates are up as well as one Austrian show. Poland and Russia simmering in the background, let's see what happens there.
So, that's the story for today. Plenty of shows to come. Get some sleep my beauties, find a cure to hangovers and off we go!
See you at the bar!

Videos - WOLFSTONE
(Taken from http://www.faqs.org/faqs/music/wolfstone-faq/)
"In 1989 Duncan Chisholm found himself recording a solo album in his native Scottish Highlands. Until this point, although having interests in most styles of music, Duncan had been a first-class exponent of the traditional Scottish Highland fiddle style, studying under the expert tutelage of the late Donald Riddle, buthere surrounded by an array of studio toys, he began to see the means to scratch the itch which had begun to bother him for some time. Duncan had met Stuart Eaglesham at a session in a local pub and a short time later and ask him to join in forming a band.
Stuart`s brother Struan, working on the west coast at the time and playing keyboards was given a similar offer. Piper Alan Wilson blew in from Bonar Bridge to back Duncan up on the tunes and Roger Niven from Avoch on the Black Isle provided lead guitar, soon to be replaced by Andy Murray.
A couple of years later the songwriting talents of Orcadian Ivan Drever completed the embryonic Wolfstone line-up who, with sequenced drums and bass, performed their launchpad gig at the first Highland Traditional Music Festival held in nearby Dingwall in 1989. Playing tunes and songs the way they wanted to hear them, the band were offered further gigs as a result of their H.T.M.F. appearance and embarked on what was to become several interesting years of playing the village halls up and down the length and breadth of the Highlands and Islands. Their teeth well and truly cut, the band were offered their first recording contract with the Lismore/Iona record label in Glasgow, and an opportunity to work with the legendary Silly Wizard accordion virtuoso Phil Cunningham as producer resulted in their first album Unleashed in 1991 The Unleashed album saw both a musical step forward and a chance to cast aside the drum and bass sequencer and work with a real drummer and bassist in the shape of John Henderson and Neil Hay. Both John and Neil, very experienced and respected session players, helped the band surge forward not only in the studio but also in a number of live gigs promoting Unleashed.
During the recording of Unleashed the band were offered a support slot on the Runrig stage at Loch Lomond near Glasgow. The exposure to and experience of playing in front of the huge audience saw the band catapulted onto a new level of touring and playing larger gigs and festivals, not only in the UK but increasingly now in Europe, North America and Canada.
The following CDs should be available at most well-stocked stores:
1991: Unleashed (Green Linnet - US; Iona elsewhere)
1992: The Chase (Green Linnet - US; Iona elsewhere)
1994: Year of the Dog (Green Linnet)
1996: Half Tail (Green Linnet)
1997: Pick of the Litter: The Best of Wolfstone 1991-1996 (Green Linnet)
1998: This Strange Place (Green Linnet)
1999: Seven (Green Linnet)
2001: Not Enough Shouting - Live (Once Bitten)
2002: Almost an Island, May 2002 (Once Bitten)
2007: Terra Firma, January 2007 (Once Bitten)
In addition to these albums, the following items were once available, have long been out of print, but may be re-released in the not-to-distant future:
"Captured Alive" -- This concert video was recorded at the Music Hall in Aberdeen during 'The Chase' Tour, 1992
"Burning Horizons" -- a three-song EP. Features the only version of "Battle" currently recorded.
"Unleashed - The Preview" -- Four track sampler of the Unleashed CD, featuring different versions of "Erin," "Song For Yesterday," "Ready for the Storm" & "A Stoir Moi Chroi." "

PIPES AND PINTS - Until We Die (Wolverine Records, 2009)
By Celtic Folk Punk
On 3:05 PM
In 5 Reviews, Bagpipes Punk, Celtic Punk, Czech Republic, Pipes and Pints
I have been listening to “Until We Die”, the first full-length release from the Czech quintet, Pipes and Pints all week. Since I first got it, in fact, and nothing else. You see, instead of just hearing a CD before reviewing it, I like to be REALLY familiar with it.
Yeah, I say that, but the fact of the matter is, I just can’t enough of this CD! There isn’t a dog on it! Every track is a full-tilt barn-burner that had me singing along, drumming on the dash, and really wishing I could catch a live show from these guys.
This was all the more welcomed considering when I first got it, I thought I would hear, well, something less. “A standard rock outfit,” I thought, “with a token trad. instrument. Been there.” Well, yeah, it is a standard rock outfit, (drums, bass, guitar, and vocals,) and a single trad. instrument, (bagpipes,) but there is a whole lot more going on here. Something harder to put a finger on.
“Until We Die” contains thirteen honest, and cliché-free tracks. There are no punked-up versions of old traditional Celtic tunes, (No “Scotland the Brave,” or “Danny Boy,”) or slow, mournful piping. In fact, aside from the band’s name, the bagpipes share no more of the spotlight than do the lead vocals, or the guitar, (the latter of which stretches out on occasion and runs some honest-to-goodness guitar solos, an increasingly uncommon thing in this genre!)
The pipes, themselves, seem to serve as a standard punk rock instrument on “Until We Die,” possessing only an incidental Celtability, and seem to be a completely natural element here. This has a great deal to do with the songs, of course. All of the tracks have a very natural, and organic feel to them, written simply for the instruments at hand and without any forced identity.
Pipes and Pints may well be deeply entrenched in the ‘Gangs All Here/Do Or Die’-era Dropkick Murphys-end of the Celtic Punk genre, but this is not just another copycat band. There is something very real about them and it is in full-dress here on “Until We Die.”
And, having totally immersed myself in this CD for a week now, I feel quite justified in highly recommending Pipes and Pints’ “Until We Die.”

NEWS 2010
These are the changes on the blog for 2010
1) Samplers
I will be posting the samplers, since they are the most important thing on this blog. However, there will be some changes:
1) Samplers
I will be posting the samplers, since they are the most important thing on this blog. However, there will be some changes:
1-1) The new name of the sampler will be "Fire in the Pub". Firstly, the name of the blog is "Celtic Folk Punk and More" and some bands are not "comfortable" under the old name (The Celtic Punk Sampler), since they play Celtic Rock, British Folk Punk etc., but not really Celtic Punk.
Secondly, "Fire in the Pub" is the name of the show at Celtic-Rock.de Internet Station. Given that the bands featured on the sampler got airplay there, I feel that it would be better that both have the same name.
1-2) Till now I have been posting 2 samplers/month. Unfortunately, to keep this frequency is difficult. So I will be posting at least 1 sampler/month.
1-3) The majority of the 2009 samplers were geographic, they tried to show the scene in a particular country. This year the bands featured on the sampler could be from different countries.
2) Free downloads

2) Free downloads
These downloads are as important as the samplers and I will try to post 1/month.
3) You Tube vids
During 2009 I have been posting mainly videos showing old bands that are worth hearing, but little by little I will be posting videos featuring new bands.
4) Bootlegs
3) You Tube vids
During 2009 I have been posting mainly videos showing old bands that are worth hearing, but little by little I will be posting videos featuring new bands.
4) Bootlegs
The aim of the blog is to help the bands and to supply the fans with free legal music. But I know that some people are also interested in these recordings of independent origin (ROIO) which have not been officially released. Last year I posted 11 bootlegs and I expect to post a bigger quantity this year. I will try to post different bands.
Anyway, there are some bands that I would like to post, but unfortunately I don't have any of their bootlegs. Therefore, I would appreciate very much if somebody could send me bootlegs of the following bands: The Real McKenzies, Greenland Whalefishers, Neck and Wolfstone.
5) Reviews
This is one of the really new things for 2010. I started this blog without a plan, the original idea was to post a sampler of legal music featuring new bands. And little by little the other elements (free downloads, videos, bootlegs) were added.
Some bands asked me please to post reviews and I thought that it was the next step. However, I am not very good at writing reviews. So I contacted Christopher Toler (THE Blathering Gommel) and John Murphy from Shite'n'Onions and we reach easily and agreement. Chris will write reviews about the bands featured on this blog and these reviews could be published both at Shite'n'Onions and at this blog. I would like to thank Chris and John for inspiration, friendship and support.
Please keep on visiting Shite'n'Onions, since you will find there a lot of things that are not posted on this blog, including the Shite'n'Onions Podcast. John has been doing an excellent work since 2001 and all of us should thank him for his support to the Paddypunk scene.

LOS STOMPERS - New album "Animal, Vegetable, Miserable"
(Taken from: www.myspace.com/losstompers)
The new Los Stompers album Animal, Vegetable, Miserable has arrived. The CD will be available from 15th November 2009.
Formed in 1997 in Barcelona, post-Irish group Los Stompers have by now established themselves as a point of referente on the Catalan music scene, developing from Irish folk beginnings towards a more personalised stance expressed by what they call the Barcelona Irish Sound. An exercise in demystification drawing on a variety of styles injected with a healthy dose of irony, a possible pan-European Irish music far from home at the turn of the Century.
The Stompers are:
Kiko Fergananym - Banjo, Mandolin and Vocals
Dara Luskin - Bass
Brian O´Mahony - Guitar and Vocals
David Holmes - Accordion and Fiddle
Marcos Lopez - Drums
Discography:
Mezzy on Stage (12 tracks, live, 1998)
Pub Friction (11 tracks, 1999)
Belmondo Cafe (12 tracks, 2001)
Animal, Vegetable, Miserable (12 tracks, 2009)
The new album can be bought from the following stores:

THE MAHONES - Live on Radio March 16th 2008
(Taken from Wikipedia)
"The Mahones are a Canadian Celtic punk band, whose blend of Celtic folk with alternative rock was a popular draw on the Canadian live music circuit in the 1990s.
The band was formed in Kingston, Ontario in 1990 by Fintan "Finny" McConnell and Barry Williams, as a one-off band for a St. Patrick's Day party.
According to their website (www.themahones.net), the name was chosen to rhyme with The Ramones. However, in an interview with the Calgary Herald (Wednesday, September 21, 1994), McConnell commented on the name of The Mahones, referring to the fact The Pogues were originally called Pogue Mahone: "When I picked the name The Mahones it was because of the Irish saying 'pogue mahone' (which translates: kiss my ass) and also because they didn't want to use it because they couldn't get played on the radio."
The band's cited influences included The Clash, The Pogues, The Who, The Waterboys and Hüsker Dü. The group's lineup has changed a number of times, with McConnell and Williams as the main constant members. Pogues members Terry Woods and Phil Chevron joined the band on tour in 2003.
In 1999, bassist Joe Chithalen died in Amsterdam shortly after a concert. He had accidentally ingested food containing peanuts, to which he was allergic. The Joe Chithalen Memorial Musical Instrument Library, Joe's M.I.L.L., was established in Kingston soon after by Wally High.
The Mahones toured Canada, Europe, Australia and the United States in 2007.
On August 12, 2007 The Mahones were the closing musical act of Toronto's Festival of Beer at Fort York in downtown Toronto."
This is a two song bootleg, recorded from a radio show (320 kbps).
1 - Queen and Tequila
2 - Drunken Lazy Bastard

FLOGGING MOLLY - Live at the Greek Theatre Out Soon
(Taken from theSideOneDummy website)
Flogging Molly set to release “Live at the Greek Theatre”
SlyOneDummy | Jan 07, 2010
“Good evening Los Angeles, we’re Flogging Molly and this is what we do.” Those were the first words from singer Dave King on the evening of September 12, 2009, when Flogging Molly took the stage at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. For a man who twelve years prior was playing at the helm of what was arguably a local bar band, headlining the Greek Theatre was surely a crowning achievement for him and his six compatriots.
Born at an Irish pub called Molly Malone’s on Hollywood’s Fairfax Blvd, Flogging Molly rose from relative obscurity through years of hard work and relentless touring, blending traditional Irish folk instrumentation with heartfelt punk rock. Never lacking for confidence and swagger, the band respectfully declined to accept an award from the LA Weekly in 1998 for ‘best bar band’, as they had much bigger dreams and aspirations than that title conveyed. Remarkably enough, only weeks before the Greek Theatre show, Flogging Molly was awarded an official Gold record plaque from the RIAA for their 2002 release, Drunken Lullabies. 500,000 units sold in this day and age is no small feat for any act, and once again it is a testament to the band’s foresight and evidence of the impact of their music on the throngs of fans that they play in front of each year.
LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE is both a DVD and double CD of Flogging Molly’s amazing performance in all its glory. Directed by Kevin Custer, LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE is a must have for all Flogging Molly fans and a uniquely special introduction for those music fans that have yet to experience Flogging Molly’s uniquely powerful show first hand. Playing songs from all of their albums throughout their ninety minute set, Flogging Molly has never looked or sounded better, as the event was shot with 8 high definition cameras including a jib crane and the audio was mixed by Grammy award winning engineer Ryan Hewitt, who co-produced the band’s recent release ‘Float’.
LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE will be in stores on March 2nd, 2010 and also includes interviews and candid backstage bonus features. This is the ultimate All Access pass into the world of Flogging Molly at a truly legendary Los Angeles venue, and in addition to the DVD of the performance and two audio CDs the package includes a booklet with amazing photos from the entire night.
"This three disc set (Double CD + full-length DVD) captures Flogging Molly’s epic performance at the Greek Theatre on September 12, 2009, featuring over 90 minutes of music spanning the band’s entire catalog, from Swagger to Float. The DVD, shot in HD with over ten cameras showcases the explosive performance. DVD bonus content includes seven Flogging Molly videos as well as behind the scenes interviews with the band. This is a must own for the legions of Flogging Molly’s faithful fans, and an excellent introduction to the uninitiated. Pre-order live at the Greek Theatre now and get a free t-shirt featuring art from the album’s cover. Album artwork will posted with the t-shirt in the next week!"

(Taken from the band's MySpace)
"A Hornswagglers Farewell.
Hey swaggler fans,
With the New Year brings some big news on The Hornswagglers front. We have decided that after 3 years as a group, it was time to hang up to boots, and will not be playing anymore shows.
We’d like to thank every one of you for your support over the past years, we wouldn’t have had nearly the fun nor success without you guys behind us.
Fear not though, new projects are already in the planning stages. We’ll keep you all posted as things develop. We hope to see you all soon.
Take it sleazy,
Hornswagglers"
