Calico Jack "Panic in the Harbour" (2013) Self-released
Release date: October 5th, 2013
Running time: 24:26, 4 tracks
Calico Jack was a pirate captain operating in the Caribbean Sea during the early 18th century. Nowadays, Calico Jack is a band from Milan (Italy) playing folk metal. The band ‘s line-up is Giò (lead vocals), Melo (lead guitar), Toto (rhythm guitar), Ricky (bass), Dave (fiddle) and Caps (drums). Apparently they try to merge metal from the 80’s and the current Scandinavian metal. I’m not a metal diehard fan, but I guess that they would be closer to Skyclad (the line-up is similar) or Alestorm (Scottish pirate metal) than to the viking and pagan metal bands.
I have particularly enjoyed the two drinking songs on the EP, the opening track “Where Hath th’Rum Gone” and “Grog Jolly Grog”, since the fiddle plays a more important role than on the other two songs. “House of Jewelry”, a song about the places pirates visit when they are at harbours, would be more classic metal and the closing track “Deadly Day in Bounty Bay” is a little bit long, but I have enjoyed the part that runs from the beginning to minute 2:40. It’s a kick-ass intro part featuring fiddle and guitar with a British folk rock twist.
The EP is available for free at the band’s site, but hard copies are available for 5 Euros + shipping costs.
Tracklist:
01 - Where Hath th' Rum Gone? 4:17
02 - House of Jewelry 6:13
03 - Grog Jolly Grog 5:19
04 - Deadly Day in Bounty Bay 8:34
