La Maravillosa Orquesta del Alcohol "No Easy Road", Self-released
Release date: 2 December 2011
Running Time: 21:42, 6 tracks
La Maravillosa Orquesta del Alcohol (La MODA) is a 7 piece band from Burgos (Spain). It's not easy to define their music. Obviously, they are influenced by The Pogues, but their music is not Celtic. They say to be influenced by them, but they also admit some influences like Johnny Cash and Goran Bregovic. So, you should know what to expect: American folk, Balkan and Eastern Europe music played mainly with guitars, accordion, fiddle and sax together with bass and drums.
Their 6 track debut EP is the evidence that interesting music with a folk feeling can be made without being only Celtic. Production and arrangements are quite good for a self-released debut recording. And, when you listen to Dabid’s vocals, you look forward to going to one of their shows.
“Masters of the World” is a good opening track featuring accordion, good drums and a catchy chorus.
The fiddle led track, “Just Sing Loud” also stands out, with an excellent percussion once again.
“No Easy Road” is another fav featuring accordion and sax. I must say that normally I love the sound of the sax, but too often bands choose the wrong sax arrangements and the songs are not improved. However, La MODA knows how to write a good song featuring sax. Hats-off, boys!
Track no. 4 is “Sinking & Singing”, a duet boy-girl. Maybe I feel that the girl’s vocals should be “stronger”. No, she doesn’t sing out of tune, but I feel that perhaps Dabid’s vocals show more passion. Anyway, it’s an awesome song.
The last tracks are two songs wit a more American sound: “Baker Street” and “Underground Blues”
As I have said, an enjoyable band. I don’t know how their shows are, but taking into account Dabid’s antics, I can expect a band with special clothes and a theatrical show on stage. Check them out.
Tracklist:
01 - Masters of the World 4:09
02 - Just Sing Loud 2:33
03 - No Easy Road 4:02
04 - Sinking & Singing 4:10
05 - Baker St. 2:38
06 - Underground Blues 4:14
