“New Tomorrow” is the third album recorded by the Serbian band Irish Stew of Sindidun. If the previous album was a gem, I can say that this CD is another one. The co-operation between the excellent songwriter Bojan Petrovic and the producer Marko Jovanovic has turned out to be flawless. Even the songs that I don’t like are well produced and well written (for instance “When Day is Over”)
The lads from Belgrade take the inspiration from the great Celtic (pop) rock and Celtic punk bands. Yes, influences can be found on different tracks, but all of them have the Irish Stew stamp on them. The first bands that come to my mind are the Scottish band Coinneach and the German band Paddy Goes to Holyhead. I enjoy instrumental tunes and I feel that the opening track “From the Ashes to Sky” has a Scottish touch similar to Coinneach’s tunes. As far as PGTH is concerned, both vocals and fiddle show a link to this German band on tracks such as “Lady of New Tomorrow” and the catchy song “No Surrender”. By the way, the latter is another evidence that a guy from Serbia can write songs that sound as if they where Irish traditionals.
Other great tracks are “Dream Shelf” ( a song that can rival top Canadian bands like Great Big Sea), “Home” (imaging the Oysterband covering Flogging Molly), “Take Me High” (top-notch Celtic pop-rock à la Carlos Nuñez “Mayo Longo” era), “One Way ticket” (fast paced Celtic punk) and “One for the Road” (another catchy Celtic punk number)
Fiddle, Banjo, tin whistle, guitar, bass and drums from Serbia. Yes, far away from Ireland. But the Irish soul lays in Belgrade too.
