The Lash is a band from Lansing, MI (USA)
(From their Reverbnation page)
When The Lash was formed in 1996, their turbo-driven take on Celtic music was considered so radical that performances were protested by local folk music organizations. Twelve years later, the genre of Celtic Rock is widely accepted, but the self-proclaimed purveyors of “Celtic Mayhem” are still mixing musical styles.
The Lash combines folk instruments like fiddle, mandolin, banjo, and cittern with bass and drums, and the result is like little else found on the music scene.
In the end, there’s only one thing that makes The Lash different from other bands. It’s not that they don’t follow the rules of music. It’s that they don’t even acknowledge them.
Fun Facts about The Lash! (From their MySpace)
**The name of the band came from an album by The Pogues: "Rum, Sodomy, and The Lash". That phrase is popularly attributed to Winston Churchill, and was supposedly from a comment he made about the disciplinary tactics of the British Navy. In fact, he never said it- kinda like Humphrey Bogart never actually said "Play it again, Sam".
** The name "The Lash" was suggested by original lead vocalist, Tim Marzorati. Until then, the band was dangerously close to being called The Young Neds" from The Pogues' song, "Young Ned of the Hill".
**Aside from the obvious definitions of "lash" (a restraint, a whip, the little hairs on your eyelid), it has several Irish slang connotations; among them: to urinate ("I gotta lash like a race horse"), to party or drink excessively ("I was out on the lash all weekend, but I'm going to lay low for a couple days"), or to fight ("we got kicked out of the pub last week for lashing with the bikers").
**You may have heard other bands describe their music as "Celtic Mayhem", but The Lash was the first- at least as far as The Library of Congress is concerned.
**The band line up on "Celtic Mayhem Live" is generally refered to as "the original line up", but it's not. The original line up of the band included a lead vocalist, a bodhran player, a different mandolin player (Chad Lovewell), and there was no whistle player.
**The first performance by The Lash consisted of 12 songs by The Pogues, and one by Willie Nelson.
**Jerry Lew Patterson was the bodhran player in the original line up of the band, but turned up later to play the guitar solo on "Bad Tattoo" (from "Every Direction"). After "Every Direction" was released, Jerry joined as the band's full time guitar player, and toured with The Lash for several months.
**The first version of "Every Direction" was initially recorded with Rob Klajda, Mike Lynch, Jesse Soriano, Jason Portier, and Mark Jagmin. When Jesse, Jason, and Mark left the band, the album was re-recorded with the new line up. The first version of "Every Direction" remains in the vault.
**The Lash has had seven different drummers, seven different bass players, and seven different mandolin players. To date, there have been 15 different line up changes. Rob Klajda is the only current member who was at the very first rehearsal.
**Buyers in France have purchased nearly 30% of the total copies sold of The Lash's second disc, "Every Direction".
**The very first original song performed by The Lash was "After the Struggle", written by Mike Lynch and Rob Klajda. The most requested song is still "Whiskey Made Me Do It" by Jesse Soriano, although nobody remembers how to play that one anymore.
**Glenn Brown, who recorded all the discs released by The Lash (so far), has also recorded Frank Sinatra, done mixdowns for Spinal Tap, designed studios for Kid Rock and Eminem, and produced the musical score for the movie "First in Show". The mixing console at his studio is the same one Lynyrd Skynyrd used to record "Free Bird".
