The Pauki "Ship Won't Go to Port" Bruised Knuckles / Butch and Suzy
Release date: May 2011
Running time: 44:54, 15 tracks
“Ship Won’t Go To Port” is the latest album released by the Russian band The Pauki (St.Petersburg, 1996). The Pauki is Sasha Tankovich (Lead vocals, flute, pipes), Miguel Deviakovich (guitar, backing vocals), Iluha “Ilyich” Martinov (guitar, backing vocals), Vetal “Basillo” Baranoff (bass, backing vocals) and Zeka Silver de Lagonda (Drums).
The Pauki is not really a Celtic punk band, but a punk band that adds pipes and/or flute to some of the tracks. Their music is known as beer-core. They play punk, oi!, hardcore, metal … and their lyrics are about booze, football and pirates.
All the songs are in Russian, but the excellent digipack includes a booklet with their English translation. There are a couple of instrumentals, the opening track “Voice of Kilt” and track no. 13, “Spiderland Tatto”. The former features bagpipes and the latter is an interesting surf music track. Apart from that, there are a couple of remixes (the least appealing numbers, IMHO)
The tracks featuring the folk instruments are:
“Voice of Kilt” (pipes) a good street punk number.
“Control” (pipes), one of the best songs of the album, a top-notch number that recalls me Die Doedelsäcke last album.
“The Second Live (in Red’s Honor)” (medieval sounding pipes)
“Old School” (flute). Another catchy track with raucous vocals that makes me think of Die Doedelsäcke too.
“Knock the Mugs” (pipes and mandolin). The band shot a promo video of this song. An awesome track that could be placed together with folk metal bands such as Mägo de Oz.
“Thousand Demons” (pipes), an oi! song with a structure similar to that of “The Second Live”, but with gang vocals.
“I’m Going Home” (flute). Another catchy track, slightly different because of the flute, but a lot of fun.
“Ship Won’t Go to Port” is not the Paddypunk album we are used to, but if you give it a listen, you will be able to find some enjoyable songs.
Tracklist:
1. Voice of Kilt – 2:28
2. Контроль – 2:30
3. Я не хулиган 2:48
4. Кто сказал что хватит? - 2:50
5. Вторая Жизнь (Ода Рэду) – 4:02
6. Смерть в Мордоре – 2:42
7. Old School – 3:52
8. Флаг на Рее – 4:00
9. Стук бокалов – 3:03
10. Зомби – 2:10
11. 1000 чертей - 4:00
12. Домой Иду – 3:36
13. Spiderland Tattoo – 2:50
14. Контроль (Remix) – 2:50
15. Встать! (Remix) – 0:47
