REVIEW - CABO NORTE "Cuando cae el sol" (2015)

Cabo Norte "Cuando cae el sol" Espiral Records CDE-149
Release date: October 1st, 2015
Running time: 10 tracks

Edu Picatoste (bass), José Miguel Rivas (vocals, accordion), Joel Sans (flute, tin whistle, horn, backing vocals), José Alberto Sánchez (drums, acoustic guitar, backing vocals), Juan Miguel Valero (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) and Mar Orriols (fiddle, viola da gamba, backing vocals) hail from Barcelona and released a 6 track EP titled “Supervivientes” in 2010. “Cuando cae el sol” is Cabo Norte’s debut album, a 10 track CD on which the band develop their own brand of Celtic rock sung mainly in Spanish.

The musicianship is top notch and I guess that the band’s members have also played other genres such as blues, hard rock, funk or jazz. Some numbers sound like a more mature version of Celtas Cortos and others like Wolfstone last incarnation.

My fave numbers are “Senderos” (a song having the Celtas Cortos / Triquel twist), “Musgo y Escarcha” (an instrumental featuring uileann pipes, but having a Scottish feel), “Flor de asfalto” (viola da gamba and lute can be heard on this track) and “Gordon” (a tribute to the late Gordon Duncan influenced by Wolfstone’s classic line-up), together with “La Sirena” (a Sin É infused track) and the rocking song “El cuerno llama

Cuando sale el sol” packaging is a labour of love: digipack with a 12 page booklet supplying with all the info about the band and CD: band’s line-up, guests, thank yous, studio credits, social media links, picture of the band and pictures for every song lyrics. Besides, they have stated the titles of all the traditional tunes that have been added to some of the songs.

So, go to Bandcamp, listen to the full album and if you like it, buy Cabo NorteCuando cae el sol” CD.
