REVIEW - TOXIC FROGS "Kill the Devil" (2015)

Toxic Frogs "Kill the Devil" self-released
Release date: October 16th, 2015
Running time: 27:49, 7 tracks

Last year all of us were surprised when a full chicks band hailing from France released their first video clip and two songs. Toxic Frogs was not a one-shot project, and the five girls have recently released an amazing 7 track mini-album “Kill the Devil”.

The song “Kill the Devil” is the album opener. Drums and vocals and then the fiddles and the rest of the band join. The girls really know to write infectious fiddle tunes and the last part of the song is fiddle punk at its best.

Track no. 2 is called “I’m Standing for You”, a song with a classic rock feel, great chorus and a catchy fiddle theme. The beat gets slower towards the end, there are lots of "hey" shouts and then a fast-paced guitar part opens the path to the fiddles.

Rin’s Jig” is one of my faves: an original set of tunes. The first one is based on fiddles and drums. Fiddles, bass and drums can be heard on the second tune and finally, after a bridge, a kick-ass lively tune finishes up the set.

Rock the Stage” was the second song to be released by Toxic Frogs. Addictive fiddle tune on a classic punk rock song showcasing electric guitar.

Track no. 5 is titled “Inner Light”. The beginning has a Velvet Underground twist, but the song evolves into a fiddle led folk-rock ballad. A true gem featuring brilliant fiddling, fantastic vocal parts and badass guitar work at the end.

Obsession” is the next track. The song starts slowly, but little by little the girls go mad.

The album is closed by “Toxic Frog”, the song that everybody knows, since it was the first single and video released by the band.

The mini-album is packed in a sleeve. The artwork was made by Chester Blood and the band’s logo by Dolcie. All the info about the band and the album can be found at the back: band’s line-up, songs credits, studio credits, thankyous and band’s website.

Toxic Frogs are a girl band and that’s a good marketing tool. But above all, Toxic Frogs are excellent musicians who are looking for a different approach on a scene that is dominated by established rules. And Toxic Frogs must be given the credit that they deserve. Long life Toxic Frogs!
