REVIEW - FOXES FAUX "Fox Tales" (2015)

Foxes Faux "Fox Tales"  Drawing Board Records / Bomber Music
Release date: February 6, 2015
Running time: 49:09, 13 tracks

Foxes Faux define themselves as a "folk rock band with a punk heart" the band was established in 2009 and began to busk and play PA-less gigs. After having released their self-titled EP in 2012, they added a rock rythm section. The current line-up is Ben Snowden (bass), Kurt Wood (vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo and percussion), Luke Parker (vocals, drums, saw, Stihl saw and bell), Luke Yates (vocals, violin, mandolin and acoustic guitar), Tim Rickaby (bouzouki, glockenspiel and melodica) and Will Quinn (vocals, 12 string guitar and banjo).

"Fox Tales" is their debut album and it has been released by the band's own label Drawing Board Records and published by Bomber Music (Smokey Bastard, Roughneck Riot ...). Four songs from their 2012 EP have been recorded again: "Isabella", "Mountains", "Do I Waste My Time" and "Rioters Queue Here". Among the thirteen tracks, different styles can be noticed: British folk-rock, Brit-pop, American folk, gypsy ... Sometimes the sound is a little bit polished, but I guess that this is what the lyrics need and clear vocals are always appreciated.

The first song is "Cops and Robbers", an infectious song with a gypsy part at the end. Track 2 is titled "Fidel Rocero" and it's a folk-pop number with amazing Brit-pop arrangements. The next song is "Isabella", a catchy upbeat song with great harmonies.

"Alien" is a fiddle driven cross between the Levellers and Roving Crows. "Do I Waste My Time?" is one of the standout songs on the album. And "Rioters Queue Here" showcases more gypsy fiddle stuff.

Foxes Faux shift to the polka end on "Jinxed". "Mountains" is an American folk infused number in the Barely Works vein. "Liars" is probably the angriest song on "Fox Tales" and "Banjoutro" is the perfect instrumental number to close the album.

"Fox Tales" is packed in a gateful album sleeve. The 6 page booklet includes the lyrics to all of the songs, line-up, guests and credits. The CD is a real labour of love. It has been produced by Kurt Wood and Luke Yates and recorded at Small World Studios and "in the attic". Kurt has also mixed and mastered the album. Ben Snowden has made the cover and disc paintings and Tim Rickaby has made the inner illustrations and the packaging design.

Even if Foxes Faux "Fox Tales"  is not a raucous album, it has plenty of interesting songs to enjoy. Watch the band's videos, listen to the full album on Bancamp and then buy a copy.
