REVIEW - VINTAGE WINE "Thrashfolk" (2015)

Vintage Wine "Thrashfolk" Alfedus Music
Release date: June 23,2015
Running time: 35:14, 11 +1 tracks

The songwriting team Petr Polák-Radim Lapčik backed by their bandmates Jakub "Jayne" Boháč (guitar) , Martin Marek Menšík (drums) and Pavel "Pšenda" Pšeničk (bass) have just released their long-awaited follow-up to their "Selection of Grapes" EP from 2013. Even if accordionist  Honza "Peky" Pekárek is no longer with Vintage Wine, the band is as tight as ever. In fact Vintage Wine keep on developing their own brand of folk-rock blending influences from the celtic lands, the Scandinavian countries and Czech bands like Čechomor.

"Thrashfolk" consists of 8 original numbers, one ballad, one traditional song with self-penned lyrics and the cover of a song from the science fiction television series Firefly. The track that opens the album is titled "Whisky Trail": amazing mandolin and fantastic fiddling and percussion. The following number is called "Such is Life". Radim has written some lyrics to the music of "Auld Lang Syne", a tale about a musician who thought that he was the best and he ruined his life.

After those kick-ass songs, Vintage Wine deliver a straight fiddle folk-rock number: "I Never Walk Around" and a different cover of "Star of the Co. Down" with rap vocals and excellent fiddle arrangements at the end. Then, they come back to the original numbers: "Radio Edith". The tale occurs in the XXI century, but the story is rooted in the folk tradition.

"Rocky Goes to Dublin" is a proof of Vintage Wine musicianship. A badass instrumental featuring Survivor "Eye of The Tiger". Not only are Vintage Wine brilliant musicians, but they also pick up the right covers. "Hero of Canton" comes from a TV series, but both music and lyrics have the folk touch.

"Woodcutter" is one of my faves. Perfect vocals, and great mandolin and fiddle performances. Let alone the lyrics, with the usual Vintage Wine stamp. Poor old woodcutter, he lost his virility."After Life" is fiddle folk-punk at its best, a sort of a cross between Tricks Upon Travellers and Romanian gypsy bands. "Tree" is another fiddle-led upbeat song with sing-along chorus and the "last" song "Hangman" an epic mid-tempo number. The bonus track is  a Czech version of track no. 3.

"Thrashfolk" packaging is a digipack with a superb artwork. The 8 track booklet includes all the lyrics to the songs, pics of every band member, line-up, recording credits and band links. The album has been recorded at ExAvik studios by Pavel Brom and mastered at Studio Pyha by Přemek Haas. Therefore, Vintage Wine have worked again with the same people that recorded and mastered their previous recordings, and Jindra Polák has been once again in charge of the graphic design.

Vintage Wine found their own way a long time ago. Even if they are not as well-known as other European acts, I feel that these guys CDs are very interesting. Come on, grab a pint and buy "Thrashfolk"!

Tracklist:

01 - Whisky Trail (3:15)
02 - Such is Life (4:05)

REVIEW - FOXES FAUX "Fox Tales" (2015)

Foxes Faux "Fox Tales"  Drawing Board Records / Bomber Music
Release date: February 6, 2015
Running time: 49:09, 13 tracks

Foxes Faux define themselves as a "folk rock band with a punk heart" the band was established in 2009 and began to busk and play PA-less gigs. After having released their self-titled EP in 2012, they added a rock rythm section. The current line-up is Ben Snowden (bass), Kurt Wood (vocals, mandolin, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo and percussion), Luke Parker (vocals, drums, saw, Stihl saw and bell), Luke Yates (vocals, violin, mandolin and acoustic guitar), Tim Rickaby (bouzouki, glockenspiel and melodica) and Will Quinn (vocals, 12 string guitar and banjo).

"Fox Tales" is their debut album and it has been released by the band's own label Drawing Board Records and published by Bomber Music (Smokey Bastard, Roughneck Riot ...). Four songs from their 2012 EP have been recorded again: "Isabella", "Mountains", "Do I Waste My Time" and "Rioters Queue Here". Among the thirteen tracks, different styles can be noticed: British folk-rock, Brit-pop, American folk, gypsy ... Sometimes the sound is a little bit polished, but I guess that this is what the lyrics need and clear vocals are always appreciated.

The first song is "Cops and Robbers", an infectious song with a gypsy part at the end. Track 2 is titled "Fidel Rocero" and it's a folk-pop number with amazing Brit-pop arrangements. The next song is "Isabella", a catchy upbeat song with great harmonies.

"Alien" is a fiddle driven cross between the Levellers and Roving Crows. "Do I Waste My Time?" is one of the standout songs on the album. And "Rioters Queue Here" showcases more gypsy fiddle stuff.

Foxes Faux shift to the polka end on "Jinxed". "Mountains" is an American folk infused number in the Barely Works vein. "Liars" is probably the angriest song on "Fox Tales" and "Banjoutro" is the perfect instrumental number to close the album.

"Fox Tales" is packed in a gateful album sleeve. The 6 page booklet includes the lyrics to all of the songs, line-up, guests and credits. The CD is a real labour of love. It has been produced by Kurt Wood and Luke Yates and recorded at Small World Studios and "in the attic". Kurt has also mixed and mastered the album. Ben Snowden has made the cover and disc paintings and Tim Rickaby has made the inner illustrations and the packaging design.

Even if Foxes Faux "Fox Tales"  is not a raucous album, it has plenty of interesting songs to enjoy. Watch the band's videos, listen to the full album on Bancamp and then buy a copy.

Tracklist:

01. Cops and Robbers 02:40
02. Fidel Rocero 03:41
03. Isabella 03:01
04. Alien 02:54

REVIEW - POLKAHOLICS "Slijterij" (2015)

Folkaholics "Slijterij" Self-released
Release date: February 21, 2015
Running time: 46:28, 11 tracks

Folkaholics is a 7 piece band from The Netherlands. They are Pim van Bussel (lead vocals), Simon Berg (guitar, backing vocals), Twan Dekkers (bass, sax), Joris Barnier (marching drum, cajon, backing vocals), Mark Dirne (banjo, accordion, mandolin, 12 string guitar) Rick Fokkinga (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, banjolele) and Ben Groonen (accordion, fiddle, guitar). Folkaholics released a 7 track live demo CD in 2004, "Live at Jerry's" and a 10 tracks CD in 2006, "Folk You!". Their debut album can be downloaded for free from their website.

"Slijterij" is a studio album, but the atmosphere is that of a live show. It can be described as a cross between Craicheads and Keily's Folk with some "pirate" drops added to the mix: there are some Irish and American standards and some new "classics" (that is, Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys stuff).

"Slijterij" is also the title of the first song on the album. The song is sung in their mother tongue and is a sort of "business card". There are bits of "Galway Girl" and traditional tunes like "The Maid Behind the Bar", "St Anne's" and "McLeod's" reels. Songs such as "Rare Old Mountain Dew", "Whiskey in the Jar" and "Drunken Lullabies" are mentioned in the lyrics.

"The Night that Paddy Murphy Died" gets the Folkaholics treatment with interesting fiddle, accordion and banjo arrangements. "Pirates" is the first pirate song on the album. A passage of Flogging Molly "Devil's Dance Floor" can be heard along the song and "Drunken Sailor" is featured too. Then Folkaholics cover Dutch folk band Pater Moeskroen:"De Ark (Ahoy)" is another lively sing-along seafaring number.

The next song is the great Flogging Molly classic song "Drunken Lullabies", which is played respectfully. It's followed by "Galway Girl". The Steve Earle song has become a standard and Folkaholics deliver an awesome version featuring sax. "Cotton Eye Joe" is another highlight with brilliant banjo arrangements.

"In Your Arms" is a bridge between the covers featuring acoustic guitar, mandolin, accordion and fiddle.

"Shipping Up to Carlow" obviously merges the  "Shipping Up to Boston" with Planxty's traditional song "Follow Me Up to Carlow". The song kicks off with the Dropkick's lines (banjo, fiddle and accordion) and then the band shifts to the "Carlow" song. Fiddle and sax arrangements are amazing and the rythm section shines too.

The album is coming to its end with "Wake Me Up!". Folkaholics cover Avicii's song and they do it quite well with acoustic guitar, sax, accordion and great backing vocals. By the way, another Celtic punk/rock band, Selfish Murphy from Romania,  covered another Avicii's song: "Hey Brother".

The last song on "Slijterij" is a poignant mandoliin led version of one of my favourite ballads: "The Town That I Loved So Well".

"Slijterij" comes in a 4 track digipack. There are no lyrics to the songs, but there's all sort of information such as the band's line-up, the studio credits, thank yous and all the links to contact the band.

Folkaholics are a suitable band for both pubs and festivals and "Slijterij" is a fantastic album for you Summer parties (and St. Patrick's Day, of course). Grab a Dutch beer (Trappist if possible) and enjoy!

Tracklist:

01 - Slijterij 4:39
02 - The Night that Paddy Murphy Died 4:15

VIDEO - FOXES FAUX "Cops and Robbers"

Foxes Faux video for "Cops and Robbers", off their debut album "Fox Tales".

Foxes Faux - Cops and Robbers

ROIO - THE MAHONES Live at the Shamrock-n-Roll Festival, Providence, RI (2011)

This show was taped in Providence in 2011 when The Mahones were playing with Dropkick Murphys, Street Dogs and Stiff Little Fingers.

It's a short show that was shared yesterday by Finny on The Mahones Facebook group.

The tracklist is incomplete on Archive org and I've tried to fill the gaps. Track no. 4 is apparently a tin whistle intro to the following number, that sounds like an instrumental version of "Star of the County Down"

Enjoy!

REVIEW - THE ROYAL SPUDS "It's a Feckin' Freakshow" (2015)

The Royal Spuds "It's a Feckin' Freakshow" (self-released)
Release date: June 27, 2015
Running time: 46:46, 11 tracks

The Royal Spuds have just released their third album, "It's a Freakin' Freakshow", a CD that has been funded by their fans via Indiegogo. The Dutch band keeps on delivering their brand of Celtic/folk punk with a hard rock twist based on electric guitars, banjo and accordion.

The album starts with "Step Right Up", a number to welcome everybody to the feckin' freakshow. "The Feckin' Freakshow" is a circus/festive number with some ska drops and hypnotic accordion that is followed by the band's rendition of Pete St. John's "The Mero" (featuring Drunken Dolly). This ballad has been covered previously by Blood or Whiskey on their debut album and The Royal Spuds version is bloody brilliant. The first part has a metal ballad flavour and all the song is dominated by guitars and tin whistle (Micky Silver switches from accordion to whistle).

The next two numbers are amazing songs too. "Skipping Stones" is The Royal Spuds at its best: a blend of Irish balladeers sound and hard rock influences featuring kick-ass accordion, banjo and guitar. "Beatiful Girl" is a rocking number that reminds me of Big Bad Bollocks.

"Mary Goes Round" is a merry go round song. Once again, the Dutch guys move to the British folk rock territory. But they are also able to write excellent Celtic punk numbers and "Tonight I'm Stayin' in" is the proof. On "The Dying Rebel", a song reminiscent of "Young Ned of the Hill",  the lads come back to Ireland. And then they drink some ciders and make us think of The Dreadnoughts with "Silver Lining".

If The Royal Spuds cover one of The Dubliners classic songs on track no. 3 "The Mero", they cover a Planxty classic song on track no. 10, "Follow Me Up to Carlow" (Curiously, this song was also covered by Blood or Whiskey on their second album). The Royal Spuds arrangements are top-notch.

The album finishes up with "Two More Pints", a fantastic folk-rock number on which Maarten van Vliet switches from banjo to mandolin.

The album artwork has been made by The Royal Spuds bassist and graphic designer Dave Schrijvers. I'm wondering if the guy on the cover is inspired on former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, as he looks like him :-)

"It's a Freakin' Freakshow" is the logical new step on The Royal Spuds flawless career. Fans of electric guitars on Celtic punk must be happy. Grab a copy asap!
