Fiddler's Wage "A Needle Pointing North" Self-released

Our Band of March 2012, Callanach, have recently released their second album. Between their debut album “Walk On Up” and the new album, a lot of things have happened. First of all, their superb song “Irish Pubs” was voted best rock song of 2012 by CelticRadio.net. Secondly, Marissa and the boys thought that the band’s name was a little hard to say and therefore they decided to change their name to Fiddler’s Wage.
The 9 track album has been delivered in a digipack with all the credits and a band pic. Lyrics to the songs have not been included. However, all of them are available at the band’s website. Don’t expect a big change of sound, as their project is always the same: first class fiddle led Celtic rock.
The opening track, “More Than A Nation”, is a tribute to the Emerald isle which is vaguely reminiscent of Spirit of the West early albums. Interesting song.
The following number is called “One More Beer”. It’s about a soldier coming back home from war at a faraway land. This song is faster than the opening track and musically has a British fiddle folk rock flavour (Roving Crows, 3 Daft Monkeys). Ryan’s vocals have had a “megaphone” treatment and the fiddling part is as awesome as usual .
Track no. 3 is an optimistic song about kids' dreams: two little girls that wanted to fly. It’s one of my favourite songs on the album and vocals by Ryan and Marissa are perfect.
The next number is a set of tunes. “Expansion” includes “Trip to Pakistan” (Niall Kenny), "The Blacksmith’s Anvil” (Paddy Fahy) and “Milt Jackson” (Marissa Ruper). The set evolves from a quiet traditional style reel to a tune featuring guitar and a top-notch rhythm section. I love it!
“One Heart Broken” is another song which goes back to early Canadian Celtic rock sound, this time the seminal band from London, Ontario, Uisce Beatha. I love the mandolin, fiddle and the vocal work by Ryan and Marissa. This number is followed by “Hole in the Bottle”, another fantastic song about the “foxy devil”. Maybe it’s a little bit long, but once again the boy/girl vocals are brilliant.
Track no. 7 is titled “The Other Side”. Probably the most Flogging Molly infused number on Callanach/Fiddler’s Wage discography. A fast paced song that both Celtic rock and Celtic punk fans will love. “I will wait for you on the other side, wait for you all along/I will wait for you on the other side, my dear”
“Just a Road” is another amazing number with a great “Wooah” chorus on which Ryan plays banjo. And finally, the big surprise. If “Irish Pubs” was voted best Celtic Rock song of 2012, I feel that “Johnny” could become the best Celtic rock song of 2014. It’s a tale about a man that has had a hard life and had lost his dear wife, but Celtic music heals his pains. If you like Firkin’s albums, you’ll enjoy this song.
The band from San Diego Lexington Field coined the term American Fiddle Rock. Together with Delilah’s Revenge, Fiddler’s Wage are another band that can be filed under the American Fiddle Rock tag: kick ass fiddle fronted Celtic music with a North American twist. I expect that you’ll enjoy “A Needle Pointing North” as much as I have done.
