REVIEW - THE CLOVES AND THE TOBACCO "The Day with No Sun" (2012)

The Cloves And The Tobacco - "The Day With No Sun" WLRV Records
Release date: 25 December 2012
Running time: 40:25, 10 tracks

The economists and the media have been using a new word to talk about the new emerging economies, BRICS. BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. On the Celtic punk world, we have our own emerging countries too. So, we could also use the term BRICS, but this time the “I” doesn’t stand for India, but for Indonesia.

After some recordings by seminal outfit Gerap Gurita, The Working Class Symphony released  an interesting EP in 2012. And, at the end of 2012, another fantastic band from Yogyakarta has released a 10 track brilliant album: The Cloves and The TobaccoThe Day with No Sun”.

Piztt and his bandmates have been able to record a kick-ass album with no covers. Believe me, all the tracks are self-penned songs. Hats-off, guys! The Cloves and The Tobacco have created a distinctive sound, obviously with some influences (for instance, Flogging Molly on their classic “Cornelist Street” and the disc opener “Shamrockville”). I love particularly the sound on numbers such as “The Railway” (another classic) and “When Something Goes Wrong”, that mix of fiddle, tin whistle and banjo. But the album also features an amazing electric guitar work. Just listen to the guitar parts on “Shamrockville”, “Boxing Gloves”, “The Railway” and, specially, at the end of “Dance With the Nurse”. By the way, “Dance with the Nurse” is a top-notch instrumental tune.

Apart from the sound, TCATT lyrics deal with interesting matters. Maybe their English is not perfect, but the lyrics are really honest and full of passion. Track no. 3, “The Widow” is a tribute to Piztt’s mother. On my own songs library it should be filed together with great The Whisky Priests songs like “He’s Still My Son” and “Song for Ewan”.  “Boxing Gloves” is about dreams that don’t come true. This song features piano and tin whistle and have a Pogues twist. “McGregore was a Sailor” is the pirate song on the album and musically has  a sound that shifts from the Blood or Whiskey side to the Paddy and the Rats side. Track no. 5, “My Favourite Whiskey” is a funny song written by Andries van den Broek, a.k.a. The Dutch Irish Bastard, about a guy whose life turns around a bottle of whiskey (Jameson?) and a Pogues CD (“IISFFGWG”? “Rum, Sodomy and the Lash”? Who knows, the title is not mentioned). And the first track on the album is a tribute to the Celtic punk scene all around the world, “Shamrockville”.

The Cloves and the Tobacco The Day with No Sun” is another evidence that Celtic punk is really global. The recordings coming from Indonesia should not be considered as exotic. The lads on this country are working really hard under difficult circumstances and their own blend of Celtic punk is really interesting. Definitely, a worth hearing scene.

HELP THE CROOKED FIDDLE BAND TO RELEASE THEIR NEW ALBUM

"Hi Celtic Folk Punkers,

I'm the guitarist from The Crooked Fiddle Band from Australia. We are in Steve Albini's studio in Chicago recording our album.

Rather than going into hideous credit card debt like last time, we have set up a crowdfunding campaign on Pozible www.pozible.com/crookedfiddleband  (the Australian version of Kickstarter) to help people help us pay for the record by pre-ording the album (and other tidbits).

There are only 14 days left of fundraising - help us reach our goal!

We will be touring the new album in Europe in Sept/Oct 2013 and Aus in Oct/Nov 2013.

Thanks,

Gordon

ROIO - THE WOLFE TONES Live 2011

(Info from Wikipedia)

The Wolfe Tones are an Irish rebel music band who incorporate elements of Irish traditional music in their songs. They are named after the Irish rebel and patriot Theobald Wolfe Tone, one of the leaders of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, with the double entendre that a wolf tone is a spurious sound that can affect instruments of the violin family.

Formation and early years

The origins of the group date back to August 1963, where three neighbouring children from the Dublin suburb of Inchicore, brothers Brian and Derek Warfield and Noel Nagle had been musical friends. They were later joined by Tommy Byrne whom they met when playing at an open air festival (a Fleadh Cheoil) in Elphin, County Roscommon in 1964.This subsequently led to the three friends playing at Fleadh Cheoil and music festivals around Ireland.

"The Split"

In 1989, a contract was signed by band leader, Derek Warfield, signing rights to an American distributor. The contents of this contract were apparently misrepresented to the other members of the band, resulting in a clause that prevented them from recording. Unable to reverse this agreement, they continued to tour albeit without any new material.

In 1995, Derek Warfield released a solo studio album entitled "Legacy" as he was still eligible to record under his own name. With Derek on vocals and mandolin, the music on this album was performed by a new band, although he was still in fact touring with The Wolfe Tones. Derek's solo releases continued on bi-annually.

In 2001, after a show played in Limerick, Derek Warfield departed the band under circumstances that remain unknown to this day. Calling themselves "Brian Warfield, Tommy Byrne and Noel Nagle formerly of The Wolfe Tones" the three would later go on to release "You'll Never Beat the Irish".

Today

The Wolfe Tones continue to tour but as a 3-piece band comprising Brian Warfield, Noel Nagle & Tommy Byrne.

The Wolfe Tones celebrated their 45th Anniversary with a special event at the prestigious Waterfront Hall, Belfast, on Sunday 26 October 2008, which was also filmed for their upcoming documentary.

Notable works

The song "Celtic Symphony" was written by Brian Warfield in 1987 for the centennial of Celtic Football Club. Other famous songs written by the group include "Joe McDonnell", a song about the life and death of the Provisional IRA member who was the fifth person to die on the 1981 Hunger Strike.

Their rendition of "A Nation Once Again" by Thomas Osborne Davis was voted the number one song of all time in a BBC World Service vote.

On Tuesday, January 8th, 2013, Brian Warfield announced via the group's newsletter that, by mutual consent, the band would retire from touring on completion of their 50th anniversary year in November, 2014. He went on to say that although not touring, The Wolfe Tones would still be available for special events and that it was their ambition to be involved in the 100th Anniversary Commemoration for the 1916 Rising in 2016.

REVIEW - THE PUBCRAWLERS "Rogues, Outlaws & Drunks" (2012)

The Pubcrawlers "Rogues, Outlaws & Drunks" Self-released
Release date: October 12, 2012
Running time: 47:10, 14 tracks

2012 has been a great year for The Pubcrawlers. Not only did they release a split with their fellows The Outsiders, but their third full album was available at the end of the year. Following  with their evolution, the band’s sound is based on a rocking mix of pipes/tin whistle, fiddle and mandolin/banjo together with electric guitar, rhythm section, punk lead vocals and gang vocals. Different traditional numbers can be found on the tracklist (“Auld Lang Syne”, “Dicey Reilly” and some instrumental tunes) apart from the usual pirate punk song (“Davey Jones’ Locker”, “Dead Men Tell No Tales”). This time The Pubcrawlers have decided to improve their music with the help of some friends. Thus, Chris Freid from The Skels, Ron Peddle from The Dockside Saints and Lenny Lashley from Darkbuster are featured on tracks 2 (“Where oh Where”),  no. 5 (“Dead Men Tell No Tales” and no.  13 (“Drunk Again”).

The final result is a solid album and therefore it’s not easy to choose only a bunch of songs. Obviously  “Hooligan”, with their gang vocals, will become a crowd favourite. “Dead Men Tell No Tales” is an interesting track too. If you love “The Last Saskatchewan Pirate”, you’ll enjoy this too. “The Last Outlaw” has a metal twist, “Seamus the Bastard” would be the right bet to top the Celtic punk charts, “Dicey Riley” is a kick-ass cover featuring bagpipes and the traditional set featuring among others “The Beggarman” and “The Masons Apron”  shows The Pubcrawlers at their peak.

But, at the end of the album there are a couple of gems that should not be overlooked. They are not so raucous as usual; however,  I have found them very enjoyable: the mid-tempo song “Lose to Win” (brilliant fiddle, tin whistle and guitar work) and “Drunk Again”, an excellent number to close the album. Well, this is not really the case, since it’s not the last album on the track. There is a surprise, a bonus track: Kenny Roger’s “The Gambler” gets The Pubcrawlers treatment.

To finish up, just a question: will The Pubcrawlers ever tour Europe? We are looking forward to sharing some beers with you here!

Tracklist:

1. Two-Bit Town 2:03
2. Where Oh Where (feat. Chris Skel) 2:00
3. Hooligan 3:33
4. Davey Jones' Locker 3:36
5. Dead Men Tell No Tales (Feat. Ron Peddle) 2:16
6. The Last Outlaw / The Road to Lisdoonvarna 5:54
7. Auld Lang Syne 2:25
8. Hobo Jungle 2:31
9. Seamus the Bastard 2:02
10. Dicey Reilly 2:44
11. Traditional Set 6:50
12. Lose to Win 2:20
13. Drunk Again (feat. Lenny Lashley) 4:29
14. Bonus Track: The Gambler (Kenny Rogers cover) 4:01

"Inspired by the love, support and encouragement from their parents along.
Combined with the fusion of the growth of mold. Where a collection of different nationalities different people of different cultures from all over the world. Accumulated 10 years of experience in the music. The music in the spirit of the Mummy Daddy is not to present music with a mix of different musical styles, exotic but perfectly engaging as himself. A new way to listen to the first Single from Mummy Daddy song  Alternative music mix with the sound of Scottish bagpipes. To increase the fun for all who listen. By working in recording studios back to Analog. It's all on tape, which is difficult to run. Every time you play. Even if the point is to start out small. But the charm of this record is. Make it sound more dimension. The more emotional.

Content to talk about life in the present, where everything is in a rush to put pressure on a routine.

I want everyone to go back to that. Everyday life. I've been looking for the child at all optimistic. And enjoy life's simple to do it? It's time to return.
"I played well today," I try to be a child again?"

THE RANTING LADS ARE BACK! - THE WHISKY PRIESTS REUNION

Great news! That's what Gary Miller posted yesterday on Facebook:

"Yes, it's finally official! The Whisky Priests will be reuniting for a series of exclusive shows in 2013, following a 10-year absence, and releasing a retrospective CD. Gary Miller, Glenn Miller, Mick Tyas, Nicky Buck and others from the band's peak period will finally be back on stage together better than ever before for what promises to be an exciting new era for the band. LOTS and LOTS more news on this (e.g. new website, festival dates, tour dates) to follow soon..."

And that's what he has posted today:

"I am very excited about working with my old friends Mick Tyas, Nicky Buck, etc, again after 10 years "in the wilderness". We are all confident that The Whisky Priests can come back better than ever. Rehearsals will start soon. In the meantime, I will be recording my new solo album, and I hope Mick, Nick and my brother Glenn will all be able to contribute to it (an early taster for the WP reunion!) as well as some other great musicians. In the meantime, I have been listening to Mick's band Tippin' the Wink's CD 'The Devil's In the Detail' - bloody brilliant! Nick's also on it playing percussion and it was recorded at Trinity Heights by the great Fred Purser (responsible for many Whisky Priests recordings). Check them out at:

VIDEOS - ERROR 99

We have been supporting the Celtic punk scene at a global level so far (Indonesia, Brazil, China ...). Now, let's introduce Error 99, a Celtic punk band from Thailand.

"Error 99 is not so much a case of mistaken identity as of wild crossover music that fuses Celtic tunes with contemporary textures appropriated in Thai. Creating a new genre they call Thairish – which also points to the profusion of Irish pubs all over Thailand - The Irish influence makes for a compelling immediacy that draws audiences into a musical excursion which spills onto the dance floor. Comprising seven members who play a variety of instruments such as the banjo, accordion, guitar, bass, violin and drums, the robust energy emanating from each highly anticipated performance proves to be one of infectious vigour and communicable imagination" (Baybeats Festival)

" (...) Error 99, who, they claim, fuse Celtic beats with Thai sound to create, er, ‘Thairish’ pub rock (...)." (Time Out Singapore)

"Starting out in the Irish pubs of Bangkok performing Pogues covers, Thairish punk outfit Error 99 have since signed a record deal and written their own material, playing at Festivals across the country including the Save Ko Tao Festival that was hit by the storms in March." (Thai Tickert Major)

"Error 99 played an excellent set of Irish folk-punk. Their singer is one of Bangkok´s most enigmatic performers, a nervous Tom Waits decked out in a perfectly white shirt and tailored suit trousers, fronting a great line-up including accordion, banjo and fiddle. The half decent sound system managed to separate the strings from the howls and Error 99 did a good impression of the Pogues on speed. Loud, brash, anthemic, ironic, great." (Tom Vater)

Sanya Kornsurat "Sanya" - Fiddle
Titichai Onsingha "Mack" - Accordion
Kidjan Rattanasut  "Jan" - Guitar
Rattanapol Boribunlarp "Nat" - Bass

REVIEW - THE BOG HOPPERS "Top Shelf" (2012)

The (Mellick Town) Bog Hoppers "Top Shelf" Bog Down Productions
Release date: October 26, 2012
Running time: 25:22, 8 tracks

Top Shelf” is the title of The (Mellick Town) Bog Hoppers 8 track mini album that was released at the end of October 2012. The Bog Hoppers hail from Seattle and the line-up  is Cormac Pope (lead vocals, guitar, songwriting), T.J. Freeby (lead vocals, mandolin, banjo, songwriting), Meahgan Ayers (fiddle), Dave Dickerson (bass, vocals), John Sanders (accordion, vocals) and Glen Hummel (drums). Fellow percussionist  David TWG Blink often shares the stage with the guys.

The band was formed in March 2011 and their evolution is quite interesting. They have played with The Mahones, they were chosen as Arse-Kickers (Band of the Month) for December 2012 at Grinning Beggar and they were chosen as number 3 at Grinning Beggar’s Best EPs of 2012.

One can say that The Bog Hoppers are an American Irish band. Three tracks have the word Irish on their  titles and one of them is in fact titled “American Irish Soul”. There are three traditional Irish ballads on the mini-album and five originals. The banjo playing puts them on the bluegrass/hillbilly end, but, IMHO, the accordion on tracks like “Top Shelf” and “Irish Punk Rock Hippie” is more Southern/Mexican border than Irish. Another amazing element on their sound is how Cormac Pope sings. This is clear on tracks like “Top Shelf”, “Cod Liver Oil”, “Irish Rover” and, above all, on “Irish Lassie”.

The best tracks on the mini-album would be “Top Shelf” (a great single to top the charts) and “Irish Punk Rock Hippie” (it has everything: fine banjo, fiddle and accordion). Other numbers that shines out: “Cod Liver Oil” (excellent banjo playing and awesome vocals sounding like a didgeridoo), “Irish Lassie” (my fave vocal antics on the album) and “American Irish Soul” (a different sounding song with a kick-ass bass line, mandolin instead of banjo and fantastic backing vocals)

Top Shelf” is a quite enjoyable CD, but a little bit short. I wish  that a proper debut album would be released in 2013. And I feel that I ‘m not the only one.

Tracklist:

1. Top Shelf 4:01
2. Crooked Jack 3:21
3. Irish Lassie 3:11
4. Die Hard 2:51
5. American Irish Soul 3:12
6. Irish Punk Rock Hippie 2:38
7. Cod Liver Oil 3:24
8. Irish Rover 2:42

REVIEW - SIBIN "INDUSTRIAL LIFE" (2012)

Sibin "Industrial Life" Self-released via crowdfunding
Release date: October 2012
Running time: 38:49, 12 tracks

After several spins to Sibin’s second album, “Industrial Life”, I feel that these guys are the new Australian sensation. Mark (vocals, guitars and mandolin), Charlie (whistles, flutes, vocals), Corey (guitars, banjo, mandolin, concertina), Luke (drums) and Tim (bass, guitars) have released an album that is an excellent blend of Irish and Australian music. Most of the tracks on “Industrial Life” are written by Mark and Charlie, but there are also three traditional numbers.

Let’s start with those three songs. “Maids When You’re Young” is a song that was made popular by The Dubliners. “Maids when you’re young never wed an old man”. Sibin’s rendition is a brilliant cover. Bass and acoustic guitar are the first instruments to be heard. Then the vocalist starts to sing and there are some awesome backing vocals. The mandolin and drums  join and the song speeds up. The concertina plays “Mairi’s Wedding” and the song starts all over again with amazing whistle arrangements. The songs is perfectly “built” and the  instrumentation well-balanced. A true gem.

The wind and seagulls can be heard at the beginning of “Drunken Sailor”. Tin whistle and drums and then all the band members join on this electric version. Fantastic whistle and  guitar work. Grab a pint and dance!

Salonika” is the third traditional song. This song has also being recorded by The Dubliners. Clapping and a capella singing. Then the tin whistle, mandolin and the rest of the band play “Humours of Glendart”. And finally, an electric end.

The next group of tracks, the “singles”: Tracks no. 1, 2 and 11.

She Don’t Love Me” is a kick-ass song: “She don’t love me love me no more, she don’t want me drinking with the boys”. All the bands members shine on this song. If the Saw Doctors would have written this song, it would be number 1 in Ireland for several months.

Run Johnny Run” was the song that the band chose to release a video. As the video was posted here some time ago, everybody knows that it’s a catchy song and one of my faves. I can even find some The Clash echoes on this track.

Here We Go” is a rocking song featuring tin whistle and electric guitar.

Other tracks like “First One To Fall”, “Fare Thee Well” or “1854” are interesting numbers. Sibin’s stamp is clear and the sound is really Australian. Anyway, I would like to draw your attention to the last number, “Industrial Life”. It’s an acoustic song featuring only guitars and flute in a Christy Moore style.

If you like whistles and flutes, Irish traditional songs and Aussie rock and folk tradition, then drop a line to these guys and get a hard copy of “Industrial Life”
