REVIEW - TO THE LAST DROP "Demo" (2012)

To the Last Drop - Demo
Release date: July 2012
Running time: 13:30, 4 tracks

Recently I ended the review of the Rijsel Irish Boy’Z with the title of a Chieftains album, “The Year of the French”. And it’s really the year of the French Celtic punk/rock scene. Plenty of different bands playing different music. There is a top-notch Celtic rock band featuring bagpipes hailing from France, Celkilt. But there were no bands blending punk and pipes in a fresh and young way. And this gap has been filled by To The Last Drop.

To the Last Drop is a new 6 piece band from Paris whose singer, Seb, is also a member of the folk-punk duo Lords of the Pints. It’s a young band with an awesome sound and the right approach. I mean, it would have been easy to copy DKM, but the guys from the City of Light are closer to Farler’s Fury and Pipes and Pints. As their motto says, "We play bagpipes but we're not from Scotland"

The four tracks have been mixed in Australia, so, even if it’s a demo, you can see that To The Last Drop are really paying attention to every small detail. All of the songs are really enjoyable, but my faves are the first track and the last track. “We’ve Got a Band” is a catchy number with firing pipes and great drumming. “Lost in the Highlands” is amazing, a pipe arrangement in the Scottish traditional vein, superb vocals even with the effects, rhythm section à la Rancid

The other tracks are excellent too. “Red Widow” is maybe the closest to a DKM song. Great backing vocals in a sing-along song with two vocalists. And “Black Pearls of Newcastle” is also a melodic punk song with more fantastic backing vocals.

2012, a good year for French Celtic punk/rock music, but also for the European bagpipes punk scene. Heavyweights like Black Tartan Clan are back and newcomers like Czech band Curlies and French band To The Last Drop are the evidence that there is enough room for more bands loving the Real McKenzies attitude .
