REVIEW- THE PUNKABILLYS "The Punkabillys" (2012)

The Punkabillys "The Punkabillys" TriTonix Recordings (2012)
Release date: February 2012
Running time: 28:02, 8 tracks

In our "little" Paddypunk world it’s not easy to find something really new. However, from time to time, a new band is able to offer something different or to open a new path. The Punkabillys, from Pennsburg, Pennsylvania, are one of those bands.

Jamie Sellers (mandolin, lead vocals and songwriting), Brian Reiss (guitar and vocals), Chris Kosachuk (bass and vocals), Adam Frei (banjo, harmonica, dobro and vocals), Jason Marshall (pipes, tin whistle and vocals) and Matt Stumpf (drums and percussion) defined themselves as "part punk, part billy". And that’s exactly what we can find on their self-titled album: 4 punk songs and 4 (hill)billy numbers. To tell you the truth, my favourite tracks are the hillbilly ones. I’m not saying that the other ones are not interesting; it’s only that I feel that it’s their (hill)billy part that I find really surprising.

The eight track album has been recorded at TriTonix Recording studios by Mike Garrity and Daniel McGonigal. The artwork and the digipack packaging are the main reasons for buying the CD instead of mp3s, even if the lyrics are not included.

Production is a little bit rough at the edges, but the quality of the songs is really superb: “Pennsyltucky”, and amazing opening track featuring banjo and tin whistle, “30” another great track, this one featuring pipes and excellent drums, “Montco Penn”, another highlight of the album with awesome mandolin, harmonica and tin whistle arrangements and the last number, “Comin´Home” on which the acoustic guitar, banjo and tin whistle truly shine.

But, as they say, The Punkabillys are  “part punk” too. And their bagpipes punk songs are also worth hearing. Listen to “Pub Crawl” and “Punk Rock Chick” and you’ll know what I mean.

The Punkabillys were our band of the month during January 2012. If they keep on writing songs like “Pennsyltucky” and “Montco Penn”, I guess that they will be our band of the month once again.
